Baton Rouge Vampire #1

Taken by the Vampire King

A Paranormal Vampire Romance

Never make a deal with a billionaire, particularly one who’s a vampire . . .

The deal is simple: spend a month with a mysterious billionaire who is the owner of Louisiana’s La Petite Mort Casino, and he’ll forget my father’s gambling debts. If it means saving our family home and business, I’ll do anything.

With his strong, sexy, take charge arrogance, Nicolas Dupont is a mystery to me. But it doesn’t matter how hot he is. This is purely a business arrangement. Nic can have any woman he wants and it makes no sense that he'd be interested in a virgin like me. I’m certainly not about to fall for a guy who thinks he can own me.

So I go hunting for a way to free myself. When I discover I’m the hunted, and there are those who want my blood, Nic claims he can protect me. But can I trust one of his kind?

When this began, I thought I might lose everything. Now I’m not sure if I’ll make it out alive . . .

*Taken by the Vampire King is 66k words, is the first book in a trilogy, and ends on a cliffhanger. It's recommended for 18+

Ok, my reasons for a 3 star will not be popular with some but it is what it is .... as my kids say.

World build and story line are easy to follow. Not repetitive. Bring in new characters and and drama with ease. No hiccups here.

Leia was a bit of a snag for me. Not a very kick ass FMC and granted all FMC do not have to be physically strong, but mentally I do prefer it. Her past, present and future are just full of people walking all over her and she doesn't get pissed about it. Just takes it.

Now Nic is not one of those people. Nic worships her and treats her like she should be treated. So, when it comes out what Nic truly is and she goes running like her hair is on fire that....well I wanted to scream. Nic has done nothing but care for her and show her the beauty of a good relationship. Yet, she leaves. As you can imagine this led to a cliff hanger of Leia being taken. *sigh* This part was predictable.

Where the sexy was concerned, I was a little let down. There was a ton of chemistry but Ray just kept teasing me with the possibility of more that never happened.

I will definitely pick up book 2. Even though my review contains a good deal of issues, I still quite enjoyed it. I just happened to be a frustrated reader in the end.

Happy reading,
DD 💕

There things in this book that just was out of character for either the storyline or the characters. For instance when Leia went home and Nic did not have someone tail her. He knew how dangerous it would be but yet he let her go home by herself with no protection. This so out of character for someone who is protective and possessive. I’m going to read the next book and hopefully the authors has the kinks ironed out.

This one was fun!
It scratched the itch I was looking for, for sure. I was in the mood for a spicy, modern-day vampire romance and this one MOSTLY delivered.

There wasnt as much spice in it as I hoped there would be and it took her until like 80% in to find out he was a vampire so like I didnt get any neck biting which was a little disappointing but it still delivers on other aspects.

We got some good romance going on in here - he is obsessed with her - along with the fated mates trope (im such a sucker for that shit) and we got some serious tension so im thinking (and hoping) the next book should deliever on the spice.

The plot was not really a thing? Its more focused on the relationship and romance but I mean the little that was there was okay ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We had a couple MMC to the rescue moments which were pretty nice!

Ended with a bit of a cliffhanger but not too upset about it cause I was def planning on reading the next one anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Overall mostly a hit with a couple misses but I think the next book in the series will hopfully make up for them so not holding it against this one so far ✌🏼

Leia Boucher's father has bargained her to Nicolas Dupont owner of La Petite Mort Casino. She was stay with him for 30 days and all her father's gaming debts will be paid. Jean Leia father has gambled away there bar The Poor House and there family home.

Leia is Nics true mate and her virginal blood and body will give him the additional powers he needs to take his rightful place as King of Vampires.

The story is fast paced with interesting and developed characters.

Ends of a Cliffhanger so be ready to read bks. 2 and 3

i have once again found my love for vampire romance.
I absolutely love the build of tension between Leia and Nic. Also love how protective Nic is off Leia, I just hope she finally realises how much he cares for her and her safety.
I hate the miscommunication between them, I wish they’d just be straight up honest about their feelings towards each other as their lies are putting Leia in danger.
Ended on a cliffhanger so I’m straight onto book 2.

Im bummed. This book was hard to get through. It was just painfully bland and simple. Im pretty easily entertained by all smutty vampire books too. Just felt like it was following a standard smutty vampire book guideline.

i had a good time reading this but i was just so disappointed with how nic was executed. like how do you write better side characters (i mean jason specifically) that have like 5 lines in the entire book better than than the main love interest whom we get to know via 1st person pov for half the book. nothing worse than feeling disappointed when you know there's potential. the ending was half assed too, i have no interest in picking up the second book because of it. anyway

Leia is the owner of The Pour House. She is also about you lose her family's business because of her dad's gambling. She goes to the store with the last she has left. Outside the store, she gets assaulted by a hot rich man and gives him one heck of tongue-lashing before she gets her sense about her.

Nic is the king, but he must abide by the old laws to take his rightful place. Something about a virgin and power. He is a casino owner and part of an old family in the area. Little does he know the girl he assaulted is non-other than the debt owner's daughter. This should be interesting.

Nicholas is very political in his moves, always in complete control except when he is touching Leia. Their kisses are scorching hot, and even thru he has an alternate reason for his affection, I'm hoping that he gets blinded by the heart and true love. Leia is more simply falling into lust and wants independence; she is no one's arm candy and won't still be there if you leave her side. She has her own thoughts and motivations but tries not to be blinded by the handsome billionaire.

This story gets interesting as the truth comes out entirely. That was one hack of a conversation. However, it scared Leia enough that she ran away. She left the safety of Nicholas's house and unknowingly put herself in great danger. Of course, this would be a fantastic vampire romance without a cliffhanger ending. I guess I must read the next book.

I have loved this story so far. It is like a darker, more angsty grown-up version of Twilight. Granted, that's where the comparisons stop. This has its own unique storylines. It is just as fascinating, steamy, and riddled with trouble. Leia being a human and not aware of the vampire world and a genuine mate to the vampire king, is very fascinating. Her also being headstrong and independent makes for an intriguing read. I did enjoy how Nic seemed to shed his angsty shell when he interacted with her. I also enjoyed those protective moments from him that made you swoon.

On the other hand, the amount of peril she gets into is circumstantial to her beliefs in the book. It probably could have been avoided with some truth early on. However, it makes for a delightful story. I'm so glad I found this vampire romance series, and I cant wait to see where and how this goes.

Disappointing book. I was loving the "Beauty & the Beast" retelling. But it was a lot of build up with no satisfying release. Figuratively for the reader & literally for the characters. Or at least what i was wanting for them. It was bland. I liked the hero but the heroine was so f'n annoying. The actions didn't match the characters -- Nic wouldn't have let her go with no protection!
She was spoiled sexually but that's on the author. The hero never seemed to get off -- or have his will power be challenged. The love scenes were just lazy a.f. to me. They just kept going straight to rubbing on her "button" while sexing. All that buildup & sexual tension for a bleh love scene.
The whole "king" & royalty thing didn't make sense to me with vampire lore world. It didn't fit the characters. Nick took way too long to reveal the truth about himself to her.
&
The worst romance book sin of ALL was committed: in spite of everything mentioned above, the characters FELL IN LOVE TOO FAST! Almost outta nowhere & with many reasons not to yet.
🤢😡🙄
Like, come the fuk on!! I can suspend disbelief for only so long dammit!!

Only read bk 1& 2. Don't really care to read bk 3.

This story is a complex paranormal romance centred around a vampire theme, featuring the intriguing premise of spending a month with a mysterious billionaire. The narrative is unpredictable, effectively delivering a complete and engaging storyline within a concise format. Readers are likely to find themselves drawn into the plot, eagerly anticipating each twist and turn.
Key elements of this immersive tale encompass themes of fated mates—an irresistible pull that transcends time—alongside witches, vampires, and shifters. The air is thick with magic, action, and palpable tension, while family dynamics add another layer of complexity to the relationships at play. The male protagonist emerges as a quintessential Alpha—exuding sexiness, dominance, and a fierce possessiveness that heightens the romantic and dramatic stakes of the narrative. As the story unfolds, it blend of passion, intrigue, and supernatural wonders.

Spicy enemies to lovers romance

What a great book! I loved The characters, both main and supporting. The author wrote a story that pulled me in and has me wanting to know what happens next immediately. Plus, who can say no to broody, dark, sensual vampire hunk Nic? I can’t wait to see where their story goes.

So. I don't know how to say this but I chose to trust the rating instead of the bad reviews. I read books 1 and 2 and I'm dropping the third. I expected it to get better but it only went on a downward spiral. The whole virgin thing? I get it but at least elaborate a little better on it other than she smells good and it makes her oh irresistible. Just... No.

It's not a terrible read by any means, but it's also not particularly good. I liked the premise, but I feel like the author failed to utilize it. Everything feels small scale even though this is supposed to be about a King and a kingdom and its politics and conflicts with other sovereignties. i.e. going to war with ~10 soldiers, having a "kingdom" relegated to a single city, etc.

The main charcter, Leia, is good in theory, but poorly executed. She's kind of moronic at times and just gets pulled around by the current of events that flow past her. She makes massive decisions that will effect her forever without much thought or anticipation for things that are perfectly predictable. It's implied that part of her rushing into poor decisions is based on ignorance, but even just a modicum of common sense would have her at least asking the right questions to fill in her gaps of knowledge.

Nic isn't much better. He's multiple centuries old and yet short-sighted at times. He procrastinates communicating critical information because he's trying to pussyfoot around the issue and find the "ideal" timing, which leads to predictable and boring attempts at tension when Leia's lack of information eventually comes back to bite them both in the butt. He seems to lack common sense, like he expects Leia to listen to him like any of his royal subjects and then makes the surprised pikachu face when she doesn't for 10th time.

The love story is kind of bland (this might be a bit of a spoiler). There's an inexplicable bond that snaps into place that might as well be magic that forces Leia and Nic to fall in love. And that's it. It's basically all raging hormones and unrelenting lust from the get-go and there's more sex than actual substance to either their relationship or the plot. Honestly, as man, I never thought I'd get so sick of having steamy sex scenes.

Francois might be one of the best characters. He does enough to make you hate him easily, but despite being clearly insane, he's still smart enough to have sound tactics when it comes to battle, he's restrained enough to not lose his temper in stereotypical crazy-person fashion to work towards his goals, yet he has no clue how to tempt Leia away from Nic; which makes him delightfully multi-dimensional.

The author fails to use the idea of the contract well, it's only really applicable for like 3 days, maybe a week. This could have been used and Leia could have executed her duty as a contractee more than once if the author actually made Leia and Nic work a little for their romance instead of just handing it to them on a true-mate platter.

The plot could have been much tighter. There's tens of chapters where everyone and their dog knows what the main characters are going to do, but they keep stalling with trivial excuses to actually do it.

Spoiler. Also, the main villian kind of swaps part way through the story, but it doesn't really bring the gravitas or tension that it should have. And the "new" villian was kind of worse than the original because he's just poorly written evil, taking actions like killing subordinates for no reason, but not giving any reason why those subordinates would continue to serve him when they now know that they could be killed for any trivial reason.

More spoilers. The deadman's blood reveal was stupid and a contrived reason to keep Francois alive. They were at war and the person who was going to kill him was a king and yet Nic now has to fear some Council we've never of heard of before if he kills Francois because he's not allowed to kill people who are drugged and thus "not responsible for their actions". It's BS.

3.5.
I loved Nic. He was loyal and loving, and seemed to care for his people and for the bond between him and Leia.
What I didn’t love? He was kind of boring. No past history reveals, nothing exciting with him. His character definitely needed fleshed out a bit more. He was also REALLY bad at communication. Talking to Leia about vampire issues and explaining why things were a certain way would have created a lot less difficult situations down the road.

On the other hand, I intensely disliked Leia. Intensely.
She plays dumb for most of the book. She doesn’t know the vampire world, but she doesn’t bother to ask questions, either. She has Aimee or Jason at her side at all times, yet can’t ask any questions? There’s a whole library, but she can’t be bothered to research? She finds out she’s a fated mate but can’t be bothered to even ask what that entails?

Then there is her obstinance and her selfishness.
She INSISTS on constantly being places “so she can help.” Uh, help with what, exactly?

Time and again when she’s faced with an attack or a difficult situation, she freezes. Literally can’t move a muscle. So, how exactly does she think her presence anywhere will help anything??? By being in the way to almost be killed AGAIN?? Or to get others killed? Bc that’s what her presence usually means.

She knows she has a scent and that EVERYONE can smell her. Yet, she thinks she can sneak around or disappear places and no one will know. Ummm okay 🙄

Her father gets sent to rehab and…. that’s it. She doesn’t check on him, she doesn’t inquire about him, nothing. It’s a bit…odd.

Also, her character will be adamant about a decision, and then seemingly turn on a dime and change her mind. And it happens again and again. Insists on no sex. Suddenly wants sex AND to be bitten. Insists on not turning. Suddenly wants turning and doesn’t care about the repercussions or the warnings that she’s given. It’s maddening.

Then there is the fact that Nic seems to always think of her and her well being over all else. And Leia thinks of….Leia.

She always thinks of herself first and foremost, and maybe has Nic in the back of her mind when she wants to get off. That’s it. It feels like she makes decisions that benefit her and her immediate needs, and damn what the consequences are to anyone else. Time and again the vampires emphasize the importance of fated mates, yet she blithely makes decisions that will have a negative impact on her partner.

Which, AGAIN, wouldn’t be an issue if Nic learned how to communicate, OR she could be bothered to ask a question or two.

I felt like by the 60% mark, I wanted to throw my book against a wall. I was getting so pissed at that same issue presenting itself over and over. Nic would keep Leia in the dark, she would get angry and act out in her own self-interest, a negative result would follow.

I’m hoping this shit is resolved by book two, bc I think there is a thread of something good here. I could be invested in Leia if she wasn’t a complete idiot. I liked the romance between the two main characters, even if it often felt one-sided. I think there is potential here, but some character issues definitely need fleshed out.

I was prepared for this to be yet another run of the mill PNR with little substance, plot, and a whole lot of steam. What I was genuinely surprised of was how despite the expected steam, it was not gratuitous. In fact, it’s a slow burn, with the female protagonist rather oblivious to the fact that her contract is held by a vampire.

And when that revelation is made, she freaks out. Like a somewhat normal woman she freaks out and leaves. Well! What a breath of believability!

Another unexpected realization I had is that this is loosely based on Beauty and the Beast: to become a true king at full power, the vampire king apparent (Nicolas) must have a virgin. Time is of the essence, as his hostile adopted siblings are vying to steal the title. As the owner of a local casino, he discovers one addict has over $100k in debt to him and a surprising sub-clause to the contracts extending the addict’s credit. Enter Leia, the “Beauty.” Her father is the addict, and she discovers he put her late mother’s business and ancestral home up as collateral to extend his line of credit at the casino. When Nicolas comes to collect and detects she’s a virgin, he offers the sub-clause as an alternative to possessing everything that matters to her. Weirdly, her father had agreed to allow his daughter to be offered as payment for a span of one month as an alternative to the properties. She feels she has no choice but to accept to agree to the sub-clause, with some of her own conditions.

So the book follows Leia fighting the expected carnal lusty pull to Nicolas while trying to maintain her independence. Meanwhile, Nicolas the vampire realizes she’s his fated mate, which conflicts with his “I hate humans” mentality and his desire to claim her as just the answer to his problem of securing the Baton Rouge vampire throne. There is one very steamy scene in the limo, but despite both of them wanting to get their freaky on with each other, they manage to resist: him because he wants to respect her and her because she doesn’t understand why she feels that way. So surprisingly, by the end of this (first) book, she’s still a virgin. Novel!

I was prepared to give this 4 stars, if only because when she discovers his secret, she doesn’t give in to the lusty pull that’s fighting her all-out freak out over the realization that he’s a vampire and she’s been hanging out with vampires for several days. She properly goes into a state of disbelief and shock, and leaves! However… alas, it ends on a very deliberate cliffhanger to get you to read book 2. So, 3 stars.

Ahh! I'm on a total Paranormal Romance BINGE right now and I can't stop, so when I saw the teaser for this book (even though it was on Amazon Kindle) I read it, liked it, and had to buy it-- and I HATE ebooks.

I will be extremely forthright saying this ENDS ON A CLIFFHANGER-- so naturally I bought book 2... only to find out that too ends on a hanger and book three isn't released until LATE NOVEMBER 2021! Ahh!

Anyway, onto the book... "Taken" begins with a heap of Leia's father's gambling debt, a short and intense roadside encounter with a dark but attractive stranger, and a revelation that that stranger could solve all Leia's problems takes the reader on a sweeping journey into Louisiana's Vampire culture and a tenuous beginning to a relationship with the Baton Rouge Vampire King, Nicolas Dupont.

While I loved the push and pull between main characters Leia and "Nic", I couldn't help but think Nic was somewhat of a dunderhead and Leia kinda dwindled from a strong female lead down to puddin'. At least, for a while. The characters were well written, but it seemed like the hot-and-cold of their relationship translated to some of the confusion behind the wishy-washy-ness of their characters-- but I quickly discovered, the author's intent behind this was to SHOW the reader that there was this unlikely attraction between the two. It was so convincingly written, I'd have missed it if I was being overly critical of the writing.

... and on the topic of the writing... there are a handful of grammatical errors in the book, but for the most part it was extremely well written. It's not literary prose-- but this book is meant to entertain and it does with flawless effort. It's a brain-candy page-turner of a book. I couldn't put it down. It was hot. It was cold. It was fast. It was a jog-- but never a walk. The sexual tension was tempered for this book as Leia resists the tempting attraction to Nic.

The Taken refers to the one month contract Leia makes with Nicolas to pay off her fathers' gambling debts. She's required to be his "arm candy" and "attend family functions with him. She is also blissfully unaware of exactly what she has gotten herself into.

Definitely not a book for kids to read as one of the main themes is sexual attraction. There are some scenes in this book that may trigger anyone who has been raped. (No Rape scene, but a near miss... well, y'know, vampires on the street an' all.) Also, if being held captive triggers you, avoid this.

Ehm, yeah... so... guilty pleasure with a decent plot. Book is more like a novella-- not long at all, but if you chase it with Book 2, it's a smooth and intense ride... I'm just sad about not having the final book to sate my hunger.

Excellent, but beware it could make you swoon lmao

What a great start to this series. I'm beyond thrilled to see where it goes and what will become of Miss Boucher.

Mr Nicholas DuPont has found his virgin that he needs to solidify his reign, but when he meets not so young Leia he is in for a shock. She's not only a 28 year old virgin, but also his true mate. The problem is, he's a vampire and she's not only human, but completely unaware that vampires actually exist.

Miss Leia Boucher owns her own bar, The Pour Bar and which is her mother's legacy, the one she worked so hard on before she died, and one that is in dire need of repair and one payment away from being closed down. The reason why.....her father!!

Mr Jean Boucher is a gambling addict and a drunkard to boot, who steals the money desperately needed to keep the bar and the house from being taken. He's spent all the money from his dead wife and has been stealing from Leia for years now.

Mr Nicholas DuPont owns the casino Jean favours and has built up a debt of over $100,000 credit and now Nicolas is going to collect on the terms as set out in the contract, which he used as collateral....that being the home and bar that once belonged to his wife!!

However, when he turns up to collect, Leia not only finds out how much her father owes, but that she's about to lose the home that has belonged to her mother's family since the beginning of Baton Rouge.

Yet, her father had also added a sub-clause of which he can use instead and when given the chance he takes it without a thought for his daughter!!

Want to know what it is??

Then you'll need to buy the book and read it for yourself 😂😂

Now onto the audio and the two narrators used for this. It's the well-known husband and wife team Wen Ross and Kai Kennicott. I love listening to these two, but the only issue i have with them is the fact that they tend to have the same voice for each character throughout.

However they are great with accents and their New Orleans accent is absolutely on point. But they have a nice smooth reading style, which is why I like them regardless of all the females sounding the same and vice versa for the male characters. I

So if you want to read a great book and have and enjoyable narration then trust me, this book and audio are for you 😊😊

Entertaining in places

No plot spoilers
No real potential triggers although there is an attempted assault and a kidnap.
The characterisation is okay, but I have to admit that I didn't really care what happened to either MC.
The FL came across as entitled and self absorbed, and although I do understand the author attempted to portray her as a daughter struggling to keep everything together, she came over as a bit mentally challenged.
**PLOT SPOILERS ALERT***
Seriously, you know your dad is a gambling addict but th you leave money in a safe he has access to?
And when you find out he used you as collateral for the debts, you go along with that?
Instead of going to live with the weird guy I would be moving on and writing off the excuse for a father.
Then there are the countless times the uncrowned king states he will keep her safe and then leaves her alone and she promptly get into trouble.
I mean, how many enemies does one book need? By my count there are about four or five of them out to get her.
There is also the issue over her listening skills, she doesn't seem to have any.
Don't go into his suite, as soon as she can she does.
Stay seated in the restaurant, nooo, off she pops for a wander around outside.
Stay at the bar during the party, no, a house tour with his nasty sibling is a better idea to her.
If the authors are trying to promote the FL as an intelligent and reasonable character I think they overplayed her stupidity.
As for Nic, he felt too one dimensional for me to care much about him. There was very little depth to him and he wasn't very likeable.
There is some swearing.
There is one sex scene relating to heavy petting not actual sex.
I think if I read the word virgin again I might scream. I lost count of how many times it was stated he had to have his virgin bride. It became tedious.
Would I recommend the book? Yes as long as readers understand it's quite overplayed and the character development is in need of some attention.
If you are a fan of the genre you would probably enjoy the book.

It’s been a while since I’ve read a vampire romance, but I was definitely keen to read this one. Taken by the Vampire King was thrilling to read. I was hooked from start to finish.

Leia is struggling to keep her deceased mother’s bar open and the adverse effects of her father’s gambling addiction at a minimum. I love Leia’s strength and fortitude. She’s compassionate despite continual setbacks and letdowns. All to keep her mother’s memory alive.

Nicholas is a vampire and casino owner preparing to assume his father’s throne. He’s rather swoon-worthy and ruthless when he needs to be. I believe he’s genuine in his courtship of Leia as self-serving as it started as. He drops the ball a few times, but I get why. I do love how protective he is of Leia; the love and attention is much deserved. And deep down I think he is good.

A fortuitous meeting begins an immediate attraction between Leia and Nicolas, presenting an opportunity that could give or cause them to lose everything. It’s a “deal with the devil” in a way that leads Leia to temporarily live amongst vampires (unbeknownst to her).

Their chemistry emits loads of sparks. I’m really rooting for their relationship to succeed as they’re exactly what the other needs, but know it’s an uphill battle.

I really enjoyed Taken by the Vampire King immensely. The author’s description of Baton Rouge and the vampire world are the perfect pairing for this story. Things ended on a cliffhanger, so I’m eager to know what’s next asap!
