White Wedding

Rate this book
An enigmatic woman wanders from a pleasure mansion to a backyard wedding, upending the lives of everyone present

No one knows the woman at the wedding. Not the caterer, an easy target, succumbing to her advances. Not the pregnant bride or her tangled family, trying to spin a fairytale wedding under a melting hot summer sun. Not even the bride’s stepsister, Charlotte, who, in the middle of the night and despite her better judgment, allows this wandering wedding crasher into her car.

Crusted in dried blood and other bodily fluids, the woman exists in layers of sense and story, a nesting doll of pornographic tales in which fantasy and banality collide and blur. In this novel that is at once visceral, vivid, and spare, the uninvited guest gives each of those she meets what they want, whether they like it or not.

Here writhe distinct bodies in distinct ecstasies, echoing and defying inherited American narratives about gender, shame, and pleasure. With an edge of humor and horror, Woods explores if —and how—we consent to our own desires.

When I read the synopsis of this book I was so intrigued and knew I had to read it. This is a dark, sensual story that follows the narrator through her night as an uninvited guest at a wedding. She has come from a very secretive mansion on a mountain and now she is wandering through this wedding conversing with guests about some of their wildest fantasies and darkest desires. This book was so well-written and the prose really drew me in. While there is a lot uncovered in this story, there is a lot of left to the imagination as well, which I think added to the mystery. Overall, this is a dark and graphic read, and I definitely recommend it if you are a fan of those themes.

A stunning debut novel! The writing is exacting and spare, and the imagery has stayed with me long after I've put it down. This novel will make you reconsider "easy" narratives about desire, consent and beauty.

3.5/5. Atmospheric and lyrically written, which transforms this psychosexual thriller into something of a fable. While it’s a little too abstract to fully get situated and immersed in, I was intrigued the whole ride.

Lovely in its innovation and daring erotic literary brilliance! Genre bending and lyrical. A thrilling short novel.
