Garbage. I'm not entirely sure how I managed to spend money on this, I must not have done my research. The book is subtitled 'Comprehensive guide to speed reading' but it consists of at most five pages of speed reading techniques. The rest is hotpot of what supplements to take for concentration, reasons why you should meditate and why speedreading is beneficial (does this really need saying? Why else would I have bought the book?). The author must have probably written this after reading an online tutorial on how to make money by writing crappy ebooks and selling them on-demand to naive people on Amazon. From the quality of the writing I would not be surprised if the writing was outsourced to someone in India. Any kind of editing was an afterthought - the mistake of writing "l'theanine" instead of "L-theanine" was repeated three times. What are we talking about, a french noun, or the L isomer of theanine as opposed to the D isomer? Don't buy this. Here is the relevant part on actual speed reading techniques: Don't subvocalize, don't fixate on words, try not to go back and re-read sentences, and read in chunks of words instead of reading one-by-one. Another ground-breaking technique the author suggests is, wait for it, not reading everything! Read the table of contents, first and last paragraphs of a section and the topic sentence of every paragraph. Right, and then I have the gist but I don't actually know the content. If a summary is all I wanted then I could just carefully read a well-put together summary that someone most definitely already has online. I will need to find a better source for actual techniques and exercises for speed reading; I welcome any recommendations.
A lot of filler with some good tips. I don't think it went into enough detail with actual strategies and exercises for speed reading, so I might have to find another book for that.
The book covers a wide range of essential topics - from the fundamentals of speed reading to advanced strategies.
It delves into the do’s and don’ts of reading, the techniques, the types of reading, the eye exercises, the importance of reading environment, Physical exercise, right food and sleep, focus and meditation. Pomodoro technique in reading, benefits of readings, factors that encourages speed reading, dangers of fixation, regression and subvocalisation in reading
Also, it urges to Practice incremental speed improvements in reading.
Take away: Reading the table of contents and accordingly preparing a set of questions upfront will help us stay focused , interested and motivated while speed reading
I highly recommend this book for anyone who just started their reading journey as it is highly informative and helpful!
This book has a lot more tips on reading than just eye movement and exercises. It goes into nutrition, habits and more. It helped me a lot in my schoolwork and heavy reading assignments.
This is a solid book about speed reading. If you are interested in the topic and want to familiarize yourself with the technique it implies, this may be very helpful. It covers some of the most basic methods for increasing your reading speed. From skimming to scanning and increasing your peripheral vision , there is a lot you can do to simply reading faster and even improve the retention of information. A great plus of this book is also that it covers physiological aspects that affect your reading speed, such as getting enough (quality) sleep and eating well (it lists some "brain foods" and their benefits. Of course, it contains some techniques and exercises you can use to actually practice to read faster. However, it will probably not offer much new information once you've already read something about speed reading. There are many other books which go into more detail. In sum, it is very much worth reading as it is written very accessibly and covers many basic concepts and factors that influence reading speed and ability and it is very short. This way, you'll get a good idea about what speed reading actually is and what it's benefits are.
One of the vaguest books on speed-reading I have ever read. There is very little technique and more on advice and reasons as to why you should speed read. In fact, there was even a chapter talking more about why you should basically read. I'm sure whoever picked this book up were already aware of those reasons.
The title of the book is very misleading: I am still trying to figure out in what way is the book comprehensive. It also assumes that your default speed reading is 200 wpm (which is not my case) hence the clumsy conclusion that you can increase your speed threefold to 600 wpm. And all that in under 24 hours. The only thing I appreciated was the casual tone of the author, making the read breezy but leaving me very much unsatisfied at the end.
Well, this is the first time I've read a whole book in one day so it must be doing something right. By my standards, it's not a tiny book either. Early on it is stated that "generally speaking, there are TONS of filler texts in books". Ironically, I've found this to ring true for this book moreso than others. There are some good tips and techniques in here; it also dispelled my doubt of reduced comprehension when reading at speed. Sometimes you need to slow down to understand and that's okay, but if you can increase your average speed, you'll be processing more content and enjoying it more. I have benefitted from this book - even if I feel like it was largely a practice ground for ideas that I've heard many times before.
This book about speed reading was much better than the last one I read. It was much more to the point and contained more useful content than the other one. Again, most techniques are found in one chapter. But the other chapters offer other helpful tips too. I really found the chunking technique helpful and the meta-guiding (following along with a finger or ruler). Particularly useful, was the tip about putting the finger at the end of the line and sliding it down to the next line once you've read a line. That was good for me since I read on an e-reader and running a finger along the words on the screen isn't an option. Will need to practice these techniques and see if they help.
There is indeed content and techniques in this book, in fact, most of it is similar like the others who had been in this field. Concentration training, techniques such as Chunking, skimming and visualisations.
I do understand book publishing policies requires a certain amount of words, so it is obvious some content was drag through pages. However, I do recommend this book for whoever wants to know about speed reading.
The book repeats itself over and over with content that is nothing life changing. You can find most of this information in a 5-minute YouTube video about speed reading. A large portion of the book is telling you why you learn to speed read and obvious reasons how it will benefit you. It was like being explained that I need to eat food so I don’t go hungry. Save your time and just look up this information online in a blog or video.
Poor writing, I felt like the writer outsourced some articles from a bunch of freelancers!
The content is ideally similar to online articles written in this topic. The author introduced some of the speed reading techniques on the first chapters then the rest of the book is just filler articles on other topics.
Any other recommendation with methodological approaches in this topic?
The techniques are generally a common knowledge. But it's good for beginners with around 200 wpm. Overall, slightly above average in terms of quality of content but being quite short, it's worth a try for someone in the initial stages.
the book provides interesting tips how to improve your reading. it's a book that you can quickly read. i would not say it contains revolutionary techniques bit overall it was a good read.
Without a doubt the fastest book I have ever read!
There are some great tips and advice in this book... there is also a lot of filler. If you follow the tips provided however, you will fly right through the irrelevant information in no time at all.
This is a good companion to other speed reading resources. I don't think it would have provided as much help if it had been the only resource I used. It confirmed a lot of the techniques I learned from other resources but didn't provide enough guidance for techniques and practices.
Highly recommend this read for those who want to self improve in speed reading. Easy steps great tools and knowledge. Thanks to all who put this together.
short practical guide. Nothing out of the world magic tricks, but reinforcing the point that it is all about practice while giving small tricks and exercises.
Briefly covers all the ideas needed for speed reading. Practice exercises would be more helpful but can be done through other means as well. Overall great for a speedy read!
This book is well-written and entertaining I can't wait to apply these skills. I'm too impatient to read for a long time, so I'm excited to start reading more!
One of those books that would work better as an one page article on the Internet. A few useful straightforward tips in it are what make it deserve more than 1 Star rating.
It has the main methods of speed reading, some exercises and some nice but fluffy information about speed reading and healthy habits. It got me practicing so it did something good for me at least.
