I can be quite harsh when it comes to the details of medicine and the medical profession in a fictional book. But, in this case, I was able to suspend some disbelief and go with the story of a stalker physician.
The physician in this case, Marcus, is super creepy. I personally know a narcissist, and can attest that the thought processes and actions of a person with narcissist personality disorder (NPD) are spot on. When Marcus sees Georgie out for her daily run, he becomes obsessed, despite having a loving wife and children at home. He is devious and dangerous and he decides he wants Georgie. What lengths will he go to get what he wants? It turns out very far.
How can someone who has such disordered thinking function in the real world? Those with NPD are experts at charm, manipulation and appear to all to be someone they are not. Is there a breaking point where the façade crumbles? Absolutely! This part of the story was very believable to me. I found it satisfying and validating to see one in action on the pages of a fictional novel, even if in the extreme.
The author was adept at keeping me on the edge of my seat in the latter chapters when Marcus’s delusions and manipulations come to a surprising and explosive conclusion.
As an engaging page-turner this fit the bill quite nicely. This was my first Peter James book, but won’t be my last!

Consultant obstetrician Marcus Valentine is obsessed with personal trainer Georgie Maclean from the first moment he saw her. This obsession becomes a dangerously out of control beast.
There is nothing likeable about Marcus, his jealous behaviour is creepy and chilling and his character comes across very clearly. There are some sections of high intensity, there is tension and the ending is good. However, much of the plot is predictable, some of the dialogue is nauseatingly cheesy and at times the over-detail feels like plot padding.
Overall, it’s quite an entertaining read but there is nothing particularly original or memorable here. I like the Jersey setting which makes a good backdrop to the storytelling.

Here is a story of obsession, stalking and narcissism that ends with a tense thrilling good enough for TV finale
The story centres around top Gynaecologist Marcus Valentine and his fixation for a woman who reminds him of a girl he had his first sexual encounter with
I’ve read lots of books that feature stalkers in all shapes sizes and forms but Marcus is truly one of the most ‘weaselly’ of characters, petulant, childish, whiney, self centred and arrogant
Also evil
You will want to see his demise and be rooting for it
The other characters play good solid parts but he takes centre stage all the way through
Now the book is easy to guess, at every juncture but didn’t bother me at all and heightened the excitement as knew what was about to happen
There is a lot, too much, medical information given tbh and lots of gynaecological references throughout and it would be easy to get bogged down with this if let yourself, then again it is a book based around medicine and hospitals so guess there is a fine line on how detailed to go?
The book is set in Jersey and portrays the island really well and conjures up a wonderful relaxed image in your mind
I felt after 30% the book really picked up speed and once into the stride of the story really then never gave up
All in all a dark book about a man who appears to be the epitome of all that is great when actually he is the reverse, and then some

This is quite a gripping read. The pace is steady. Another good standalone novel from Peter James.

James's latest standalone thriller is just as gripping as his ever popular Roy Grace series.
It tackles some really disturbing themes as obsession and a powerful postion makes for a tense and captivating read.
It took me a little longer to get into the flow of this thriller, though I put that down to the Jersey setting - even his Cold Hill books are set in Sussex.
Doctor Marcus Valentine is certainly one disturbed individual. Having almost knocked down jogger Georgie having been distracted whilst driving, his convinced that she was the girl that he was so infatuced by as a teen as goes to great lengths to follow 'Lynette'.
The way people reveal there movements to complete strangers online is used to great effect.
Marcus soon tracks Georgie on a running app which allows him to follow her every moment.
I really liked Georgie as a character - her excitement of finally becoming pregnant whilst her love of fitness and high online following to incorporate the two is rather sweet.
The fact that she's delighted that a Doctor is now following her progress and makes her feel validated was when I realised I was hooked.
Marcus medical knowledge is used to devastating effect, James really puts his female protagonist through it during the later half of this quick read.

I love Peter James novels and very rarely disappointed. This stand alone is another winner and sure to satisfy his faithful following.
Marcus Valentine seems to have everything, a loving wife, three children and a successful career as a doctor. But Marcus is still not content with his lot and dreams of Lynette the girl he was infatuated in his teenage years. While driving to work he almost runs down a jogger who is the spitting image of his dream date. Could this jogger be Lynette.
Marcus is completely obsesses with this woman and it threatens to destroy both his and her life. This is another fast paced twisty thriller by top author Peter James that you will find very difficult to put down.

Peter James is author of the long running Detective Roy Grace series. I Follow You is a stand alone, psychological thriller that had me enthralled from start to finish. I love his writing style and the way he writes his characters - you will have strong feelings about them all. This story is a rollercoaster and I loved it.

"FOLLOW" book until the very end.
WHY? This gripping thriller about a deeply flawed and narcissistic OBGYN has a very slow start, but quickly picks up midway through the book.
After almost accidentally running over a woman (Georgie), the protagonist (Dr. Valentine) begins to delusionally believe that he and Georgie are meant to be together.
Dr. Valentine's obsession for Georgie becomes dangerously out of control -- and there is no stopping him. He uses his title as a doctor and his hospital privileges to manipulate Georgie and her husband; resulting in a series of heart-wrenching cataclysmic events.
I lost count, but I gasped multiple times during the book's final chapters.
I listened to the book's audio version. The narrator was just OK. This book would have strongly benefited from multiple narrators since it was not always clear who was saying what as each chapter unfolded.
Although Peter James is a prolific writer, this is my first Peter James book and I will certainly be seeking out this author's future titles.

Why is it so hard for Marcus to be happy with his life? He is brilliant -- a renowned gynae oncologist. I mean, he has everything! A loving wife, a respectable job, three healthy and loud kids. He has everything! Influence, respect, power, money, expensive grapes. Yes, I can understand that he is flawed, he had a troubled childhood but he could've been happy.
I hated him so much. I badly wanted to smack him in the face with a Colposcope. Ugh. Nasty dude.
Oh, my my. This book is crazy, creepy and I loved it. A tale of a man driven by obsession and narcissistic tendencies. Although some of the parts were a little bit repetitive and monotonous, I didn't mind. I liked the ending, really fitting.
I hated him so much. I badly wanted to smack him in the face with a Colposcope. Ugh. Nasty dude.

Absolutely nail biting. I spent the last half of this book thinking THIS CANNOT BE HAPPENING! I love anything that gets me this on edge. Yes it’s pretty cheesy in places and a little far fetched but I was glued. When I started I thought it would be a bog standard stalker story, but it’s soooo much creepier than that. 4 stars from me. ✨

I have been a fan of The Roy Grace series by Peter James, so I jumped at the chance to read I follow You. A standalone novel from the author and slightly different style of writing but just as good.
Georgie lives on the island of Jersey with her partner Roger who is a pilot. Georgie is an avid runner and a Personal trainer. Between her classes she runs and uploads her times and circuits on the app Run master. Where people can track and follow runners wherever they go. One day whilst running, she is nearly run over by the top Gynaecologist and oncologist Marcus Valentine who is married with three children. When they meet Marcus thinks that Georgie reminds me of an old school girlfriend Lynette who dumped him years ago. This starts an unhealthy obsession towards her, that nearly has dire consequences.

I can’t believe this book. I love Peter James and his wonderful Roy Grace stories. But this is just horrible, why waste time in the company of such a revolting self centred person as this Dr. I couldn’t read it all, went to the last couple of chapters as I couldn’t bear to read how he treated everyone. Very disappointed.

A seriously good psychological thriller!
The obsessive behaviour of obstetrician oncologist Marcus Valentine was so authentically creepy, it kept me thoroughly engrossed. A character who is truly despicable always makes for a good read. Valentine, married with children, becomes obsessed with fitness instructor Georgie and this forms the basis of the chilling plot. There is tension, twists and unexpected turns throughout the book.
I really enjoyed the island of Jersey setting, a close-knit community which made the plot seem even more atmospheric and claustrophobic. However, the setting also impacted some of the authenticity of decisions that were being made and resulted in some predictability for me.
A quick, read-in-a-day book which I found to be a great escapist experience.

5 +++++ riveting stars audio and story!!!

One of my favorite authors, ever. I live for each new publication in his Roy Grace thriller/Brit police procedural. This is his second standalone book and first that I’ve read. The praise: beyond a doubt the creepiest villain I’ve ever read about as he was so well integrated within the fabric of his community at every level as to be invisible, but he actually made my skin crawl in all his normality. I’m not a Stephen King reader so maybe I don’t know villains but this kept me turning pages. The two stars I hated to give to a five star author who works so hard to be so accessible to his readers is due to technicalities only and that could be me nit-picking. There was no way this much evil obsession could stay bottled up inside one man and he just happened to be thinking about a certain woman from his past one day only to think he spots her hours later on the street?! That suspended my belief and I couldn’t get over it. However, I certainly couldn’t put this book down, even though I anticipated every move. Definitely try Roy Grace, the nuances and intricacies of plot that build with each book are so refined and blended in that you just want more. The characters are drawn so well you care very much about what’s in store for them. This author is a winner!

As a huge fan of the author, both his Roy Grace series and his standalone books. I was very keen to read this.
But I came very close to DNF. It was only by reading a few other reviews, where people had said it really picked up around 30%, that persuaded me to continue.
They were right, although personally it was a little later. Even after this point I still didn’t really get into this. Although there was a bit towards the end that I could easily have read till well past bedtime.
Overall I rate as 3 stars. Starts as 1-2 stars, and hits max 4-5 stars.

So some midlife crisis guy becomes obsessed with a woman because she has red hair and looks a little like a woman who jerked him off when he was a teenager. If this sounds like a laughable reason to become obsessed with a person, it's because it is. The whole book is superficial and ridiculous, with a dollop of icky that is supposed to pass for edgy. The ultimate hero is a woman who isn't even in the book until probably halfway through. Truly stupid.

After the dreadful last Roy Grace book I was hoping this standalone thriller would be a return to form from Peter James. How mistaken I was though!
This is a very silly story of a brilliant consultant who becomes obsessed with a woman he nearly runs over, a woman who looks just like someone who jilted him when he was younger. The story then moves tediously forward as he stalks her before concluding with one of the most ridiculous endings I've ever read in a novel.
Unfortunately Mr James has become lazy in his writing style with very repetitive chapters and dull storytelling.
I recommend you not to waste your money on this drivel and can only hope the next Roy Grace is a return to form for this once fine storyteller.

Another five star read from Peter James.
This is a stand-alone thriller that I devoured in just one sitting.
Marcus never really got over his first love at school and even though he is now married with children, he still thinks of her.
On his way to work he is rushing through traffic as he’s running late and nearly hits a blonde woman who is out running. When he sees her his world stops as she looks just like Lynette, his first love.
Marcus becomes determined to meet her again and when his wife organises a dinner party, Marcus is shocked to meet the woman face to face as she’s the fiancé of one of his friends.
Georgie doesn’t recognise Marcus but he makes sure he gets to know her that night and leaves her feeling a bit uncomfortable.
In Marcus’ mind, he is meant to be with Georgie so he goes to extreme lengths to try and make it happen.
I won’t say anymore as I really don’t want to spoil it fir you, but I will say this book has some nail biting moments which will have you on the edge of your seat.

I’m a massive fan of Peter James and love his Roy Grace series and therefore bought every other book he has written too and I am very rarely disappointed!!
I really love Peters James’ use of short chapters, it makes the book so easy to read and to get lost in with “just one more chapter” also getting chucked up when my partner is moaning at me that we’re running late 😂
One of the brilliant things about Peter James is that even in a standalone novel you end up becoming enamoured with his characters and drawn into their world even if they aren’t likeable in the novel.
I would definitely recommend, and I am looking forward to continue to read more of his standalone books in the coming months whilst I count down the days until my new Roy Grace book is delivered 📚📚📚

Long term Peter James Fan alert (Roy Grace + stand alones) - I am always eagerly anticipating any new releases.
I thought this one had all the Peter James story telling magic through a slow-pace, realistic narrative.
Normally when you read psychological dramas you have to suspend some level of believability, but not with this story.
I found it especially compelling as it was chillingly real and impactful. It gave me the eebie jeebies!
An excellent read. More please !

Cuốn này đọc phải đến gần 50% thì câu chuyện mới thực sự diễn ra và từ đoạn đó thì nhịp truyện khá dồn dập, căng thẳng. Gần nửa đầu truyện thì lê thê dài dòng, chỉ miêu tả sự ám ảnh của gã bác sĩ Marcus với cô gái đang mang thai Georgie mới gặp. Toàn bộ đoạn ám ảnh này được chèn nhiều đoạn nói về y khoa nên lại càng chán - nếu bạn muốn đọc về sự ám ảnh, theo dõi thì đọc cuốn Em của Caroline Kepnes sẽ hay hơn nhiều.
Tuy vậy đến nửa sau truyện thì không khí hoàn toàn khác. Truyện đi theo điểm nhìn không chỉ của Georgie, Marcus mà còn của bác sĩ phụ trách thai sản của Georgie là Kath và bác sĩ thực tập trẻ tuổi Resmes. Georgie bị đưa vào thế bị động khi lâm phải tình huống ngặt ngoèo, trong khi đó Marcus đứng ở vị trí trên, chủ động điều khiển mọi việc. Nửa sau truyện này hay nhất vì tác giả đẩy cao được mức độ tàn nhẫn của kẻ ác, tới mức đến cả mình cũng không ngờ đến được, tất cả chỉ vì sự ám ảnh bệnh hoạn của hắn.
Nếu nửa đầu truyện Marcus là trọng tâm thì đến tầm 30% cuối truyện, Kath trở thành nhân vật chính, là người anh hùng sẽ tìm cách giải quyết vấn đề. Tuy vậy, mình không cho là Kath xứng đáng trở thành nhân vật anh hùng trong truyện. Bắt nguồn từ một tình tiết liên quan đến cậu Resmes đã cho mình thấy cách hành xử thiếu chuyện nghiệp và không có cái đầu tỉnh táo mà một bác sĩ nên có ở Kath. Mình phát bực vì chính sự ngu ngơ thiếu cẩn trọng và không biết suy xét của Kath đã dẫn đến sự nguy kịch về sau với Georgie, mặc dù kẻ gây ra là người khác, nhưng Kath có thể đã ngăn chặn sớm hơn, thay vì là quá chủ quan như vậy.
Đọc truyện này mình mới thấy là bác sĩ mà đã là kẻ xấu thì thật sự quá nguy hiểm. Cách xử lý những người gã không thích và với người gã thích khi liên quan đến y học vượt qua cả giới hạn đạo đức nghề nghiệp.

‘I Follow You’ is an eminently readable book but not one of Peter James’ best. It is a classic tale of good vs evil, obsession, and unrequited love. Sure, there is darkness at the heart of this book and a bottomless pit of evil concentrated in our main protagonist- Marcus Valentine. Marcus is obsessed with fitness trainer, Georgie, and resorts to all sort of dastardly deeds to secure her love. Of course, Georgie doesn’t reciprocate and therein the problem lies. Marcus is rather the pantomime villain of the piece and his true persona over the thin veneer of respectability is easy to glimpse. This makes the book a little superficial in depth, given the characters are either good or bad, with little in-between. There is no moral ambiguity that would have added to the plot and given the reader something more thoughtful to chew on. This aspect of Peter James’ writing seems to have become entrenched lately, along with the stilted dialogue of his characters. It seems James has developed an unchanging formula for his characters’ dialogue depending on whether they are nasty or nice. There is a certain unwavering ‘nice’ middle class aspect of this, too. This has become a feature of his Roy Grace series of books, also. James has a brilliant imagination but this story was a little too predictable for me, including the outcome of the story. Valentine is a clever man but the mistakes that lead to glimpses into his dark soul are somewhat elementary. A linear thriller with entertainment value but nothing more.

This book is totally to blame for me reading late and then not being able to get to sleep....
Marcus Valentine has it all. He is a well-respected gynaecological oncologist; good looking, charming, has a lovely wife and 3 young children, many friends and loves his Porsche. After almost hitting a woman jogger while distracted driving, he is shocked to see she is the spitting image of a young girl he was obsessed with as a teenager who led him on and then embarrassingly dumped him.
With the aid of a jogging app that people can follow other runner's times and track where they go, he starts to look for her. Purely by chance one of his mates brings his pregnant fiancée to dinner whom Marcus hasn't met yet and he can now put a name to his new obsession.
Very quickly his life spirals out of control as he convinces himself she wants him as badly as he wants her and he sets out to remove those 'hurdles' that are stopping them being together.
The pace builds quickly and you get totally absorbed by the action and whether he is really going to get away with his elaborate plan.. Excellent!

Addictive, unnerving, and suspenseful!
I Follow You is a fast-paced, sinister thriller that takes you into the life of Georgie MacLean, an avid runner whose use of social media and an online running app makes it extremely easy for the man who seems harmless and like he has it all, a beautiful wife, three darling children, and a successful career to always know when and where she will be.
The writing is sharp and crisp. The characters are secretive, obsessive, and impulsive. And the plot is a disturbingly eerie tale of control, obsession, deception, jealousy, betrayal, depravity, senseless violence, and murder.
Overall, I Follow You is a dark, twisty, creepy page-turner that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish and is a wonderful reminder of just how vulnerable and susceptible our dependence on technology and social media truly makes us.

Boring
By far the worst book of Peter James I have ever read. I am a great fan of his Roy Grace books and sadly this was a very predictable story following them.. read it as you surely will but I will be surprised if you don’t agree.
