This was an excellent introduction to understanding runes with a well-rounded, expansive approach to history, creation, understanding, connection and practice with them. I feel I learned a ton of valuable information from here that I can refer back to whenever needed. There are directions for creating runes of different types in this book that I am looking forward to trying out for myself. The only negative critique I have is that at points it got repetitive regarding he general essence of runes. Apart from that, this was a wonderful reference guide to understanding and exploring runic systems for beginners and advanced users alike.
This is a good beginner glimpse into a variety of runes. If you’re hoping for a book just on the furthark runes (elder or younger), it’s only a portion of it. It covers the Ogham and the witches runes as well. Nothing too in depth but enough to get an idea to see if it’s something you’d like to research further. If it’s a topic you’re mildly interested in, you’d likely get something from this book but definitely don’t let it be the end of your research on the topic.
I have been meaning to learn runes for a long time. I don't know why I put it off for so long- I guess I figured that learning runes was going to difficult. After learning how to read tarot cards I decided that yes- I can in fact learn the Elder Futhark Runes (24), and for whatever reason, I was drawn to this book first. Now, I'm glad I read this, this covers all the runes: Elder and Younger Futhark Runes, Ogham Runes, and Witch Runes. Ms. Nock also describes how runes can be used in spells and how to "care" for the runes. Now, I'm pretty opened minded, but I found this author to be incredibly opinionated that runes are "sacred" and need to be treated with care and respect. While, I agree that one should treat most things in their life with care and respect... but it always sounds (at least to me) that this author believes if you don't treat runes like you would a holy object then she doesn't agree with you. After awhile it did get annoying, and this book probably could have been 1/3 sorter if her opinions had been removed. Still haven't decided if I'm going to keep this book or not as a reference.
3.5 rounded up for continually surprising me with its inclusive takes on questions about contemporary identity and ye olde magicks. I didn’t read it cover to cover, but read a lot of the first two parts and then skimmed the back half, my interest mainly being in the elder futhark.
