Tsugumi Ōba (Profile in Japanese: 大場 つぐみ), born in Tokyo, Japan, is a writer best known for the manga Death Note. His/her real identity is a closely guarded secret. As stated by the profile placed at the beginning of each Death Note manga, Ōba collects teacups and develops manga plots while holding his knees on a chair, similar to a habit of L, one of the main characters of the series.

There is speculation that Tsugumi Ōba is a pen name and that he is really Hiroshi Gamō. Pointing out that in Bakuman the main character's uncle was a one-hit wonder manga artist who worked on a gag super hero manga, very similar to Gamō and Tottemo! Luckyman in all aspects. Also that the storyboards drawn by Ōba greatly resemble Tottemo! Luckyman in style.

Love getting to the end of a series and it all feels like a big waste of time

This manga was beyond beautiful, I absolutely adored the first half but it sadly went from a phenomenal and beautiful manga to the author simply being like "I don't care anymore", not to mention the main target of the story changing mid series from super sentai to philosophical with zero action whatsoever. Also some characters like the professor drastically changed and gave up on their goals in a matter of seconds, becoming itachi. So many things were mentioned that the author never bothered to explain, like Nasse, what was she and how did she die if she was there before God himself? The ending made absolutely no sense and completely ruined this beautiful series. The fact that they left it to a kid to be God is beyond me, a suicidal kid who believes people who want to die shouldn’t get help but get what they desire instead, death. How can you let such a person be God? And after becoming God, he decides to commit suicide and end all humanity, not knowing he’d doom all existence. How and why?

Now I’ve read that some people have made up their own explanation of the ending, how the ending might be the ultimate critic against suicide, or about the purpose of life, meaning of happiness. But I’m sad to say that I don’t agree with any of it, if the ending has some philosophical meaning behind it I would’ve sensed it and appreciated the end, but I strongly believe that they decided to end the manga as quickly as they can because it didn’t receive as much attention as the author wanted. What a let down…

It was a pleasure to read this whole saga; but the finally two volumes ruined it all (especially this last volume).
The ending is terrible (and I am using nice words just because I respect the authors). There were plenty of ways that this saga could end but the authors chose such a bittersweet ending! It was awful! I felt like I read 14 volumes for nothing. This manga saga is not perfect (at all) but it's not that bad. It's quite "readble". But this ending?! Oh God. Biggesy heartbreak I have ever had from a book. What a shame. "Platinum End" had everything to be a great saga but the authors ruined it.
I don't recommend anyone to read the 14 volumes. Trust me: the ending is so, so bad. It's just not worth your time.

Last Volume

Spoilers..ish

This series hasn't been the amazing creative wild mayhem that DeathNote was...but then could anything match that?

However the ending was a bit out there...which maybe shouldn't have been a surprise..given these two amazing creators..

I have to begin this review with high praises for the art because it was absolutely phenomenal. Honestly, it was the art that kept me reading until the end because it was just that beautiful to look at.

While the premise was interesting and was what got me interested in the series, somewhere along the way the story just began to drag. By the time I was on volume 12, I just wanted it to be done. It also didn't help that I felt the protagonist a bit underwhelming especially with the last arc.

Despite my feelings about the series, I'm glad I read it and maybe the anime adaptation will work out whatever problems I had with the story.

To me, this was a satisfying al be it sad ending. It made a lot for the story and the themes explored although it also gives the feeling of an empty hole because it is so drastic.
Also, the 'winner' for becoming could both be seen coming from volumes away and yet wasn't entirely expected from how the plot seemed to unfold. It wasn't a twist by any means considering the considerations about it that turned up earlier in the story.
But the question it leaves me with is this: what does it even matter if you collectively decide that the new God isn't going to do anything anyway? I know why it matters now, but that wasn't really until close to the ending. And the implication at the ending. I liked that. A lot.
Do I believe in that stuff? No. Do I think it's an interesting way to view it? Certainly. And it did make the ending feel more complete. Like the circle was completed again.

I thought I would talk about Platinum End overall, rather than just the final volume. For the most part I liked the series. The artwork was stunning and the story concept was interesting. Some of the action gave way to philosophy in the later volumes, but that didn't upset me too much. However, I was a tad disappointed in the ending. It did tie things up fairly neatly, but it was still a bit sad the way things went after all the build up through the first thirteen volumes. I think Death Note will always be the standout work for these authors, but the other stories I've read of theirs are also solid and beautifully illustrated, and Platinum End is no exception. The series as a whole gets 4 stars from me.

This book is like watching 7 seasons of Game of Thrones and being so excited for the final season…. And then you were given season 8. The entire manga was exciting and thoughtful with you really rooting for certain characters until this finale. The ending is nonsensical and faux philosophical with nothing mattering in the end. I would give this negative stars if I could.

voto complessivo di 14 volumi: 3+ ✰ su 5
(7 su 10)

-𝗹𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮 è 𝗱𝗮𝘃𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲;

No.

Okay, strap in, everybody cause we're going into an existential crisis mashed with ultimately unanswerable theological questions. TLDR: It was an okay-ish story that...went way out there.

So... turns out that Nakaumi can't bring himself to kill anyone who wants to live, thus he can't kill Saki, Yuri, or Yumiki, even under the influence of Dr. Yoneda's red arrow. But a second near death experience forces Yoneda to reevaluate his thought processes

...because again, this story crashes into an existential crisis mashed with ultimately unanswerable theological questions. And my brain hurts trying to keep up.

Overall, I don't hate it...but it was...a lot. And I’ll also admit that my ratings on this series are higher than I would normally put them because I’m a big fan of the creators previous works. The first eight books were very much in the same vein as Death Note, with humans gaining supernatural powers and being corrupted by their own greed and hubris which ultimately leads to their downfall. Even the final conclusion sorta matches the "There is no heaven or hell" "Death is equal" ending of Death Note. I didn't even mind the discussion about whether god was actually what we imagine it to be or if it only is because we believe it should be. Even the view of things from the celestial realm was interesting. But it did end up getting very confusing and felt like it kept going in circles. It ends somewhere on the spectrum of eldritch horror, thinking on things that humans can't truly know for sure and will probably never find answers to no matter how much we try. At least that's my take on it.

This series has 14 volumes.

And then there was one above all.

I'll be perfectly honest as we reach the end of the Platinum End manga that I started to read this series at first because it was created by the same people who did Death Note (although honestly like many others everything after L just seemed unnecessary) but when I got my bright and literally shiny manga I was drawn into a world where although similar to other stories (like Future Diaries) it had that amazing realistic drawing style and moral questionings that made Death Note a success. Certainly sometimes the story seemed to drag on here and there but in the end a winner is chosen and the end result will change the world forever but no spoilers my friends for you will have to read it yourself or seek out your spoiled goods elsewhere. :)

All in all I was satisfied with the ending of the series though honestly I did not expect things to turn out as they did (for the most part) and I hope for all of you who have likewise been reading this series for themselves that you will be as surprised and/or satisfied as I am. :)

It's never a good sign when we go to the last number of a series without a single suspicion of a possible end. That usually means there isn't a well designed and planned end.

Unfortunately, that was exactly the case here. I feel Ohna had to come up with an end to wrap up the series and he didn't had one thoughted through.

There is several possible meanings for the end.

Could it mean humanity will only exist as long as God exists?
Could it mean that every dead has consequences? Even the death of a God.
Was it completely meaningless? Just an unfortunate miscalculation?

I don't know but I feel the end is not up to the series level and it might be the reason why it is not as popular as Death Note.

I still enjoyed the series overall.

I am speechless.

Tbh the series had some flaws, the pace of it wasnt quite there sometimes. Also in my opinion the battle scenes cheapened a bit the whole structere.

However I really liked how it posed questions about life, death, the role of God. I also really like this avoidant God-figure I often see in japanese literature. The characters were really well put together. I loved the ending. I liked how the series played with concepts such as « God is in all of us and we are all in God somehow ».

It was refreshing in a bitter way how nihilistic the whole series are. I understand why some people disliked it for a reason.

Last but not least the artwork was great.

I can see how people would not like this end. That being said i believe it is a good end looking back at the questions this manga brought up. It can be frustrating to grow attached and it not go the way you wish. A part of me wants the other version of this final but wont that happiness also come to some conclusion? This is the way a final volume should be. Time to experience the results of the journey you went through. I was hurt, I felt frustration, I felt excitment and I felt happiness...

What kind of ending is that? Smh the character development was not what I was expecting ever since we all know how capable these authors are, maybe the target audience is different and was not supposed to be the tricky master story like Death Note (I know it sounds absurd but is the point of reference for readers/followers from Ohba and Obata). The good side from this series is the drawing, very well done and filling experience on that regard.

As expected dari Mangaka Death Note!

Holy shit that broke me. Read the whole series in a few days after having it on hold for over a year. (Stopped somewhere around vol 9, because I didn't own the next volumes yet.) And damn that's one hel of an ending. Don't know if I like it as an ending. But at least it was yet again a big surprise.

Awful ending. This plot had a lot of potencial but the authors failed completely to deliver a good message and a greay ending. Life is amazing. Death is just the beginning of another beautiful phase of existence. Don't ever take your life. Don't listen to this stupid book. Keep going! You are going to make just as Mirai and Saki made it. You are loved, I love you and don't read Platinum end ❤️

I don't know what to feel of this series. It was entertaining, but I feel that the end is unsatisfaying. Plus, I expected another masterpiece from my fav mangakas.

This reads like a Ashirogi Muto manga
