Tired of inadvertently killing people with her special ability Unluck, Fuuko Izumo sets out to end it all. But when she meets Andy, a man who longs for death but can't die, she finds a reason to live—and he finds someone capable of giving him the death he's been longing for.
Fuuko tackles Andy’s past—literally! However, Victor intervenes and tries to eject Fuuko. She then reconvenes with Andy and the two take on Victor together! Meanwhile, back in the real world, Anno Un encounters Rip and his crew, and they’re gunning for Fuuko’s life!
This volume made me emotional as hell. Anno, you are the coolest character ever and I love you. Damn this series has very quickly become one of my favorites!
Feb. 22 -2021: And thus ends the Anno Un arc. What a character. Heartbreaking to know they don't actually die, and they're still stuck alone, able to see and hear everyone but not be seen or heard themselves. One of the most heroic and selfless characters in manga. They'll be sorely missed.
Mar. 2 -2022: This remains my favorite volume of Undead Unluck. You get the climax of the Victor fight, AND all the Anno Un stuff? And the title drop of To You, From Me at the end? Chef's kiss. 👌

I didn't think this day would come when I started reading Undead Unluck, but this is the volume that held the emotional hammer and drove the nail right through my heart, all while a fight was going down against one of the 4 Seasons. This was mainly the story of Anno Un and his life, what it stood for, and the power that belief and writing can exert on people. The start of this volume is a very rad and exciting battle between Andy and Victor that entails loads of new moves taking place thanks to the trials of the previous volume. Seeing these two larger than life characters throw everything they got at each other was so cool and Andy's new unluck bullet is a true upgrade. It was interesting to learn how Victor had given up on trying to kill god and that Juiz still believes it is possible, even though they both were the founders of Union. I'm excited to delve more into their past together later and whatever happened in 1865.
The real highlight of this volume comes from all of Anno Un's work coming to fruition even as he loses the body he had drawn, returning back to Unknown. All he had done to get these messages across worked because he believed in these heroes who once were just story characters but became real. His work also kept Fuuko alive as she didn't want to die until the series, which her mother had loved, ended. Also cute to see that her hat was her grandpa's. Though Anno Un may no longer be able to be seen, he is still believed in by the crew and that is just so touching. Also loved to learn that Rip feels he needs to stay a villain because if he becomes a hero, then he wouldn't be able to prioritize bringing back the person he killed on the operating table when his unrepair activated. This series really just keeps getting better and better.
They also beat Autumn, but that wasn't really the most gripping part, all the personal drama was the real treat.

Again this power system is fucking awesome and tragic. I wasn't super engaged with the main plot of this one because I felt the backstory of one of the supporting characters was so much stronger than everything else happening at the moment. We're just in a power up arc and those don't tend to stick with me. I'm also just realizing the negater Unknown is also the one who knows everything and they are so cute and headcanon trans and I am so hoping they will randomly pop up in scenes from now on. There is one interesting power up now: Fukko's Unluck is more equipped to each person as she understands them, which I think will lead to some really fun interactions. And as they say themselves, they have a chance at killing God if they meet and understand them, which is so exciting ??!!
The Autumn arc seems to come to a close. The back half of this volume fleshes out Unknown more as a character, making for several touching moments, especially in the last chapter. The front half of the volume works to give Andy some more techniques that should be helpful in future battles, especially as Victhor isn't an enemy anymore.

The best volume so far, this story just gets better. Anno Un is such a good character and his story is so touching. The writing, the world building is top. I am glad i didn’t fully drop this after the first few chapters.

On my initial read-through this was the first volume I actually liked. On second read-through oh my god this is actually kind of peak. I love Anno Un! Dude was forced to be a nobody and instead of sinking into despair he started telling stories. He had no personal existence, he exists only through the stories he tells and he uses those to make the world a better place!
Tozuka gave an interview a while ago about his path as a mangaka. His mother died while he was still writing one-shots and trying to make it big, and that was a massive blow to him since his mother was the number one person he wanted to read his work. He wanted her to see him succeed! Undead Unluck was born out of this idea that people can be consumed by their grief and guilt, and through love and connection with others they can make the world better. Fuuko lost everyone around her but with Andy she's on a path to kill God and save the world. Anno Un also lost contact with his mother, and could never share his life or success with her, but through his manga could help tell a story that would save everyone. This arc, very much, about Tozuka's love of storytelling and the power an author wields- and just how much of a character they are in their own stories even if we can't see them.
I read the official English translation on an app called “MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA”. I gave this volume 4 stars because as great as the action scenes were, I didn’t expect to get so emotional over Anno Un! This volume also left me curious about other, seemingly more minor, characters’ backstories. I hope to learn more about them in future volumes.
