Dana Claire Simpson grew up in Gig Harbor, Washington, drawing the entire time. She eventually graduated from The Evergreen State College, despite having spent all her time drawing, and not always for credit.

Attempts at doing real work along the way are hardly worth mentioning; the relevant fact is that, from 1998 to 2008, she drew the internet comic strip Ozy and Millie. After winning the Amazon-sponsored Comic Strip Superstar Contest in 2009, Universal Uclick signed her to a development deal for Heavenly Nostrils.

She currently lives in the Seattle area with her tech genius husband and her fairly stupid cat.

Did you know that pixies tend to be terrible contractors? That unicorns do not pounce, they pronk? When unicorns are nervous, they tend to produce clouds of nervousness sparkles? Marigold's parents are named Tulip Celestial Nostrils and Rutherford B. Hayes (the unicorn was first)? And Phoebe gets a unicorn nickname: Speckleface Spiderhooves! Pick up the latest Phoebe and her Unicorn for the latest summer adventures including a unicorn family reunion and a fancy clubhouse disguised by a Shield of Boringness.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Unicorn Selfies is the latest Phoebe and Her Unicorn instalment and was as engaging and funny as its previous editions that I've so far read.
In this edition, Phoebe is going to her unicorns family reunion, and her unicorn is very nervous. They have a blast together as always and have lots of fun little adventures through this book too
The humour is funny for both children and grown up, although some areas within the book may need explaining to the child in more detail and discussion as they may go over the child's head. I enjoy this series and look forward to seeing where their next adventure takes them.

This collection begins with Marigold and Phoebe attending the unveiling of their brand new clubhouse, which wouldn’t be complete if they weren’t pixie punked. Now the clubhouse is finished, all they need to do is figure out what kind of club they are.

description

A good portion of this collection focuses on Marigold preparing for and attending her family reunion. Phoebe and Marigold attend the reunion in style because unicorn and once there Marigold catches up with some familiar faces. She also meets some of her family for the first time.

When the reunion is not the focus, Marigold makes Phoebe’s problems disappear and Phoebe helps Marigold with her self help book. Marigold’s shadow goes to the dark side and a conspiracy theory is tested.

In keeping with the honour that is being Marigold’s best friend, Marigold bestows upon Phoebe her unicorn name. This is also the collection where we learn the number 5 is a dragon called Jim who “rains death from above”.

Phoebe’s powers of observation are called into question.

description

More than once.

description

Because so much time was spent in the lead up to and attendance of Marigold’s family reunion, there wasn’t quite as much variety in this collection. I enjoyed finally getting to meet more of Marigold’s family but I missed Dakota, who was only mentioned in passing. Max also only had a small part to play.

I always enjoy hanging out with Marigold and Phoebe, “knower of unicorn secrets”. I’m looking forward to the next collection already.

Book in a book: Phoebe reads The Neverending Story. I also attempted to read this as a nine year old but couldn’t understand at the time why the book didn’t replicate the movie exactly, not realising the book came first. Note to self: finish reading The Neverending Story.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the opportunity to read this graphic novel.

Thank you, Andrews McMeel, for the advance reading copy.

I just love the engaging manner in which the characters are presented as. I love the dialogues/banter between Phoebe and Marigold, the unicorn.

I feel this series is a good one for the target audience as I feel the main characters express in the best ways what they want to say. The presentation is clever and creative. It's colourful and as mentioned before, really engaging.

The young readers will gain so much from each book in this series. It's not different with this one as well.

The only area I am not quite satisfied is the art sequence/presentation in most parts. However,
I am sure the book will come out much better when it comes out in the physical format.

My preordered copy of this collection could not have come on a better day, because I was sick with a nasty bug and feeling ill and grumpy about it...but there is NOTHING more comforting and cheering than a Phoebe and her Unicorn collection! I dived in with huge relief, and laughed out loud so many times as I read this delicious new volume. It was wonderful, which was 100% predictable, and so exactly what I needed to feel better about everything!

It's another charming adventure for Phoebe and her unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils! In this collection, Phoebe and Marigold temporarily separate from their cupcake-stealing shadows, daydream in their fairy-built clubhouse (featuring a golden staircase), and travel by rainbow orb to a unicorn family reunion. Full of humor that both children and adult can appreciate, Unicorn Selfies is a wonderful story of friendship and family with a little magic. My eight-year-old and I love reading these books together!
Thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review. Unicorn Selfies is scheduled for release on June 7, 2022.

I had no idea this was part of a series. The 15th book actually! I caught neither head nor tail of the story and wasn't invested in the characters at all. Most of the jokes were super flat and not funny too. Some children's books are great for all ages, some are suitable only for kids. Sadly this belongs to the latter group.

This didn't quite hit the spot like earlier volumes have, but I think that was just me. The stories are still very funny, though I would have liked to see more Dakota.

Phoebe and Her Unicorn book #15 … yes 15! I started reading these years ago, and passing them along to my niece, but she’s apparently outgrown them. It’s fine. I’m fine. 😭😝 Her family are not readers. I tried. I’ll keep reading them because Simpson is always good for a few chuckles.

9yo Phoebe and her pet unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, are back in another hilarious book full of sparkles, topical humour and adventure!

In this episode, there is an overarching plot of Marigold's family reunion, and her attempts to rebel. We also have references to conspiracy theories ("flat earth" and "birds aren't real", anyone?), comment pages on the internet, and so much more.

My kiddo (who is adamant he hates unicorns) LOVES this series and gave it a million stars (out of 5).

Another fun read with loads of references for the adults, and enough Calvin and Hobbles style humor for the kids

*Many thanks to Netgalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

Graphic Novel
Phoebe and Marigold return for more fun and adventure. I appreciate these books remain ones that can be read at a purely humorous level as well as a deeper level with support for issues that young girls (and unicorns) face.

Another delightful installment. I don't know how Dana Simpson is still coming up with completely new situations and completely new jokes for her characters, but it's a beautiful thing. Fifteen volumes in, and we're still going strong!

I continue to adore this series.

Clever, imaginative, funny for many ages, and the author has yet to run out of new adventures, new topics, new ways to keep bringing the reader in.

Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was our first Phoebe and Her Unicorn book. My kids grinned throughout the entire book, but some of the humor was lost on them. A couple of references in particular, like the aerobicizing unicorn and the NES vs. Nintendo Switch comment, are more aimed at grown-ups than kids.

I can see where the Calvin and Hobbes comparisons come from.

Overall, the comic strips present fun vignettes, but this is probably a good one for children at the younger end of the middle grade age range to read with their grown-ups, or at least to discuss with their grown-ups, instead of reading it by themselves. For example, the one page with four panels that takes on stereotyping in racism warrants further discussion.

Hay, y’all! Phoebe and her unicorn Marigold are back for new adventures. The pixie contractors that Marigold hired to create a worthy treehouse for them have finally finished, and all that’s left for them is to decide what kind of club they want to have.

When Phoebe doodles on her math assignment and accidentally leaves it lying around, Marigold spills moon nectar on it, and the doodles come to life. It takes days for Phoebe to get rid of them all. And then Phoebe has to rescue Marigold when she starts reading self-help books. To a unicorn, a self-help book is just a mirror, and Marigold gets trapped looking at herself.

Marigold then decides it would be a good idea to set her and Phoebe’s shadows free. But when Phoebe goes back to school and gets a cupcake, Marigold’s shadow steals it, and Marigold announces that her shadow has gone to the dark side.

In preparation for Marigold’s family reunion, she decides to give herself an award. But she also has a list for Phoebe about how to act around her family, like “be less human.” But once they find a place to park the Rainbow Orb and get to the reunion, they’re very excited. Maybe too excited, as Marigold and her sister and their parents all sparkle when they get nervous, so it takes a while before they can actually see each other.

But once Marigold sees how alike she is to her mother, she decides that she should rebel and asks for Phoebe’s help, because if there is one thing that human kids know, it’s how to show your parents that you are you own person. She tries to show her rebellion through fashion, but that doesn’t really work for the unicorn.

And when Marigold tries to convince the unicorn internet that humans are not just a myth, Phoebe has to come up with a way to prove that she exists to a unicorn conspiracy theorist. And she does it in a way that shows she will not be forgotten.

Author Dana Simpson has brought us another Phoebe and Her Unicorn Adventure in Unicorn Selfies. This latest installment in the series offers up more sweet shenanigans and adorable drawings. I really enjoyed Unicorn Selfies. Not only are these colorful cartoons filled with charm and really smart humor, there is something special about the friendship between Phoebe and her unicorn that just brings me joy. For me, this books is a two (disposable) thumbs up!

Egalleys for Unicorn Selfies were provided by Andrews McMeel Publishing though NetGalley, with many thanks.

"Phoebe and Her Unicorn" has to be one of my favorite newspaper comics of all time, right up there with "Calvin and Hobbes" and "The Far Side." Indeed, it has quite a bit in common with "Calvin and Hobbes," save that "Calvin" is a girl, "Hobbes" is a unicorn, and this comic eschews a lot of the soapboxing and philosophizing C&H often got up to, especially in the comic's later years. Having read fifteen volumes of the comic thus far -- thirteen collections and two graphic novels -- I'm still greatly enjoying the comic... but after so much binging, I'm finding some of the gags are getting a little repetitive.

Phoebe and her best friend, the unicorn Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, continue their antics together. With help from Marigold's magic the two of them bring Phoebe's sketchbook doodles to life, build a tree palace (that looks like an ordinary treehouse thanks to the Shield of Boringness), and brave Marigold's family reunion together. And they handle it all with their usual goofy charm, Marigold's magic, and their weird but close friendship.

I always enjoy the art style of this book, which is simple and cartoony but still fun and dynamic. And I appreciate that Simpson gives Phoebe multiple outfits instead of sticking with one outfit for the comic's entire run. It probably makes for more work for the artist, yes, but it also implies that, unlike Calvin, she actually owns more than one outfit. Now if we can just get Max to wear another shirt...

Some of the gags of this comic have been reused enough times, however, that they're starting to get old. I can only hear how unicorns invented something common to humans so many times before I start rolling my eyes, however. Also, as bratty as she could be, I missed seeing her and the goblins in this volume. Maybe next time...

I still enjoy these comics, and I still intend to keep reading them. I just hope Simpson comes up with some fresher gags in the future. At least the story arcs are generally fun.

Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the advanced copy in exchange for our honest review – my daughter (almost 7) and I read this together and loved it. We’re big fans of Phoebe and Marigold and have the series, so it was a treat to be able to read this middle grade graphic novel early.

Overall impressions from the almost 7 year old:
- all Phoebe books are 5 stars including this one!
- my laugh out loud pages were page 76 (the workout scene), page 87 (big fancy butt), page 89 (laundry line)
- I got to meet Marigold’s parents!!

Overall impressions from me (I’ve also read all other books in the series, multiple times)
- same humor and reading level as prior books
- a few familiar side-characters and several new unicorn characters
- Max made an appearance, but not Dakota which was a plus; sometimes their name-calling isn’t my favorite though it's very mild

I am looking forward to getting this when it comes out and I am sure we will read it countless times. So glad these continue to be published!

Unicorn Selfies by Dana Simpson did not disappoint. Phoebe and her Unicorn is undoubtedly our family’s favorite book series, so we were ecstatic to read the latest in the series, Unicorn Selfies. My husband noted hearing the echoes of our laughter across the house on multiple nights of reading. My daughter is still quoting various parts of the book days later (ie. Marigold’s Shampoo commercial).

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to middle grades readers, but even more so recommend it as a read along for parents and their middle grades kiddos. A child’s adoration of a book series is priceless, but reading alongside your child and sharing that love is unparalleled. Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and Netgalley for an advanced reader’s copy in exchange for my honest review.

📖My Thoughts📖

This was a cute and fun read! I’m not usually one to read books that are in comic book format, but this one looked cute so I gave it a try. It was very easy to follow along and was a quick read. The age group for this would probably be around 7 and up. There is even a glossary in the back featuring some of the more complicated words which I think is great. Not everyone has a dictionary in their house so it’s helpful for kids. This was a very light and entertaining book for the kids and allowed some imagination and portrayed such a great relationship between Phoebe and Marigold. There are 14 other books in this series, making this number 15 and it can absolutely be read as a standalone. Overall this was a very cute and enjoyable book.
Thank you Netgalley, Dana Simpson and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

My daughter, age 6, got really into Phoebe and her Unicorn adventures last month, and read through all the books, and was ecstatic when we were gifted a copy. The book is still in the same format, with an overarching long story, with anecdote injected inside (This took my daughter a few books to get used to). There's a few updates to their lives. Marigold and Phoebe now has a clubhouse- a magnificent shiny gold tree palace that's hidden by the 'Shield of Boringness'. Marigold proudly shows off her new ad- "Unipoo' anyone? ;) This book really gave us a deeper glimpse into Marigold's original world, even Unicorns feel venerable about their family reunion- awwww.

Many more fun adventures in this book of Phoebe and her Unicorn. Pixies build a clubhouse that is amazingly splendiferous (and pixies are oddly like human contractors.) Also, Marigold gets stuck in her mirror (of course) and has some new-to-her emotions like envy and some self-doubt. The latter comes in the form of preparing for her family reunion.
One of my favorite things in reading Simpson's series is the language. Words are not dumbed down for kids and she plays with things like, "I'm a big fancy-butt! Pay attention to my big, fancy butt!" I love it. And the unveiling of Phoebe's name is built up to in this book (and some of the past books but the possibly more confusing second half is in this book.)
Four and a half stars rounded up for Goodreads.

I love Phoebe and Marigold - I’m 34 and have read all 15 books with no shame lol. By now on volume 15, I wish I could assume that they’re all 5 stars, but I can’t. Im glad this one had less - but the abrupt scene transitions that appear to have no more purpose than a television commercial to a show’s storyline are killing me. A set goal (beginning/middle/end) for the volume’s storyline, a cohesive theme, no disjointed one page mini story with non legit transition to or from - are all good places to start. Or am I seriously misunderstanding what these books are? Is it just a chunk or comics done between some dates, some not pertaining to the others at all, smashed together in a “collections” with a random strips subject chosen as the title? Someone lemme know, please.

This is the 15th adventure of Phoebe and her unicorn friend Marigold. These are popular graphic novels in my elementary school library for both boys and girls. Phoebe is nine years old and in this adventure she and Marigold visit their new clubhouse, fly in a magical orb and attend Marigold's family reunion. These books are silly and fun with gentle humor. I’ve already ordered a copy for my library collection. I anticipate more interest in the series because of an upcoming Nickelodeon tv series. Recommend for 3rd graders and up. Here’s where I confess I enjoy these even as an adult. I’m so glad I got to read an ARC of this! They only take me ten minutes or so to flip through and they’re so sweet and charming. They always put a smile on my face. The author really gets kids I think. I’d happily recommend them to any young kid to read. Why shouldn’t a little kid’s reading practice be fun? And hey, if you’re the adult page through one when your kid is done with it and get in touch with your inner child and not worry about adult stuff for a couple of minutes. 🙂

To be honest, this was a really fun book! I like reading more serious books sometimes, but sometimes it’s nice to just have something really silly to read. I genuinely laughed out loud when there were references to conspiracy theories, and the drawings and colors really just make for a cute graphic novel. Pheobe and her Unicorn has been somewhat of a guilty pleasure in the past, I’m a huge Calvin and Hobbes fan and this is quite similar, so that was really fun. Andrews McMeel Publishing, thanks so much for an early copy!

I’ve lost which number in the series this is. It is exactly what we come to expect from Dana, Phoebe, and Marigold Heavenly Nostrils. The book is a fun daily look at the life of a little girl and her not so imaginary unicorn. In this installment they go to unicorn family reunion and meet Marigold’s parents for the first time ever. Interesting concept, great fun, though not as good as some other compilations in the series.

I have read other books in this series and so I knew before I started that I was going to enjoy this book. I love Phoebe and Marigold and their adventures. It’s like reading a bunch of cute yet fun short stories. They are usually funny and imaginative.

The pictures that went with the book were simple yet well done. I really liked them.

Overall, I would read more by this author and in this series.

Max and Marigold really are the best friends a girl could have <3 I love Phoebe and her Unicorn, and was excited to see the newest collection of comic strips available on NetGalley! I liked how this one tackled friendships and family relationships, internet phenomena, all with a dash of the magical and the hilarious. And, as a parent myself, I always appreciate when Phoebe's parents pop in for a good 'dad joke'
