In the heart of darkness... do what must be done.

Depweg is lost in time, unwittingly finding himself in a stream of reality that has broken off from the single river our universe safely resides upon. John has no choice but to do the impossible and retrieve his best friend or risk the two parallel timelines crashing into one another. Teaming up with the newcomer, Jose, our hero must act quickly to prevent a catastrophic flood of crashing realities.

Poised at the center of our galaxy, lies the most destructive force in the known universe, and John will get a first-hand experience at its unimaginable power. To save Depweg, our hero must travel through the supermassive blackhole, and back in time to find a single needle in a thousand haystacks.

Waking up in a strange place, Depweg is gifted with something he hadn’t known he had craved since John had first told him of the unstoppable prophecy and coming apocalypse; solace. For the first time in years, Depweg can take a breath, finding peace in the knowledge that the end of the world is far, far away. There’s only one thing that could make his relaxing vacation even better while simultaneously providing the perfect reason to never go back…

Having lost everyone he cares about, a defeated, hopeless young man will allow chaos into his heart in exchange for a chance at revenge for the fallen. All too late, he realizes the cost as the law of unintended consequences proves to be absolute, and a war is waged on people the young man once called friend.

Behind the scenes, powerful marionettes pluck at fraying strings, guiding the story toward its inevitable conclusion. Will John be able to cut away his strings to become a real boy? Or will he remain a puppet to his fate…

My name is Hunter, and I’m a wordaholic. I’m also about to break the fourth wall…of your mindhole. Because there is a true story behind this…well…story.

It begins with two best friends who grew up together, breaking rules and raising hell as they shaped each other’s personalities into the shameless assholes they are today. Well, at least for one of them, but I’ll get to that in a moment. These two boys—let’s call them Hunter and John—were all but inseparable. John excelled at creating music powerful enough to make angels weep and being the funniest asshole in Texas while Hunter dabbled—poorly, I might add—in his humble writings. Because they were self-declared brothers from other mothers, John respected Hunter’s humble writings as much as I—I mean Hunter (stupid third person perspective)—respected John’s musical magic. John’s tunes could have changed the world, one day…

One fine day, after reading one of Hunter’s horrifically detailed short stories about a serial killer, John asked Hunter to write a story about him.

“Hell yeah, dude! What do you want to be?” Hunter asked, brimming with honor and biting back a very manly squee.

“A vampire,” John responded with a mischievous gleam in his eye. “But not one of those sparkly ones. A true bad ass!”

“Done!” Hunter crowed with a smile and an accompanying high five.

“No, dude. Promise. Promise you’ll write and finish a book about me. You are the most prolific writer of our generation!” John said. (Something like that. I might be paraphrasing a little, but you get the gist of it). “I would consider it an honor to live on for eternity with your words as my life’s blood.”

Hunter agreed, never to realize the weight of that promise until one Sunday morning when John’s mother called, crying incoherently.

John…had died.

Hunter was left in a cold world without his best friend and doppelgänger. Hunter still thinks about that moment to this day. How the morning light crept through the bedroom window while Hunter stared at the ceiling, noticing how the popcorn texture created cruel, jagged shadows. How everything started to blur as his chest was crushed beneath the weight of what he was hearing, each word stacking heavily upon the other until only fitful, ragged gasps of air could escape his throat. Only fiery tears existed, especially after the horrific realization that Hunter now had to make some of the hardest phone calls of his life to the circle of friends who orbited around John’s solar pull.

Their star was no more, leaving their universe a colder and darker place.

John not only left Hunter, but a friend named Valenta as well. There was also Nathanial and Depweg. The friends were each stricken numb with the loss of such a beloved flare of life. But…

When the three found out that Hunter was keeping his promise to write the greatest story ever told—starring their dear friend, John—they demanded to be a part of the adventure. Each of them immediately knew what type of supernatural character they wanted to play in this urban fantasy eulogy. It would be a funeral pyre of words, and their fictional personas would be John’s pallbearers.

So please, as you read the following pages, feel free to laugh. Laugh at the situations John is placed in and his dickish dialogue to those around him, because John is 100% in this story without alteration (albeit he is a vampire). Laugh and let his memory live on inside the theater of your mind. Like he does in ours.

Thank you, sincerely, from the bottom of my beating heart, for giving my best friend the chance to live again. You are part of this magical ritual, and that would make him the happiest man in the…well, wherever the hell he is.

I am a huge fan of the Preternatural Chronicles and John Cook the Irish Vampire. I have followed him from I'M GLAD YOU'RE DEAD to the current volume. Unfortunately, I have noticed a certain level of power creep and it's become a bit like Supernatural where the protagonists go from being guys who hunt monsters to guys who regularly fight the Devil. I was worried that this book would continue this trend. I'm glad to say I was completely wrong and that this book's biggest appeal is that it is a character piece.

John Cook's best friend, Depweg, is someone who has lived virtually his entire life alone with no chance of a normal life. An accident involving time travel results in him being transported to the Eighties where he discovers his chance to live a quote-unquote normal life. Unfortunately, it has the potential to unmake everything in existence. Horrific choices must be made, consequences will happen that could not be imagined, and some really good distractions from the apocalypse that has been building for multiple books.

This book is definitely full of gut punches.

Starting this off saying that I really enjoy the series. Before I start with the things that I didn’t enjoy in this book I want to explain my reasoning. I like to read urban fantasy because it’s an escape from my incredibly stressful and at times literally frightening life. I don’t want or expect HEA(not a fan) but the last two books have been unbelievably depressing. This particular book takes a segue into sci-fi( not a fan) and the incredibly detailed ( very well written) but incredibly looooong and incredibly detailed and the many different perspectives of the fight scenes actually had me sigh in frustration. I enjoy a good story with a plot within a plot. But this series is getting depressingly dark and if I was a character I would just say f’k it and lay down, cry and die. I usually enjoy John’s dopey ,snarky actions but in comparison to what is actually happening I tend to want to roll my eyes. I started to give this three stars but realize this is just based on my opinion and what I like. I do like the series but I’m hesitant to read the next book. Sorry Mr. Blain, I do enjoy the series

John On Outstanding!!!

This is a very emotional and evocative book. It strikes many chords in a reader and is a wonderful continuation of the series.
As the series is also a tribute to Hunter's doppelganger best friend( his words, not mine), you can feel the love and respect given to one lost.
Hunter has outdone himself with the plot and twists and as much as I'd like to strangle him, we NEED him to continue writing. So maybe just mild torture.
Seriously though, Read this whole series for what it is. A rip roaring good time and tribute to a friend. It is snarky and well written and has loads of laughter to brighten the day after epic battles. Worth every minute of time and dollar spent.

This book to some crazy turns that I didn't see coming. It picks up pretty much right after book 5. So you really need to read these in order. Each one adds to the whole story. Cannot wait for the next one!!!

Crack your mind and emotions.

Hunter is a glorious b*****d. His stories are fantastic, characters believable even while being fantasy entities. The worlds, dementions, prophesies, and wild situations kept me riveted on the book. Masterful twisting of emotions, destruction of plans, but with a smattering if hope as part of the cliff hanger. I am already chomping at the bit for the next book.

Ended too soon

I loved it, and I'm fairly certain that was part of your plaaaaan. While waiting for my interview, instead of going over things that would help me I decided to John On instead and was not disappointed. Time will tell if I should've waited or not, but I thoroughly enjoyed the book!

Time travel? TIME TRAVEL?

Well this got weird, fast.

Another character heavy installment of this roller-coaster ride of a series.

As per usual your normal tropes are smashed to pieces, stuck together with gaffer tape and reformed into something warped but beautiful.

Hunter has gone to town with a strong plot many laughs, a bucket of tears and some nostalgia which will make you want to reread the series again.

Strap in for the ride and John On!

What? Blain just took a vampire, weres, mages, the Devil, quantum and astro physics, and time travel, threw them in a blender and ended up with an urban fantasy novel, you say?
Why yes, yes he did. *And* made me tear up, to boot.
Darnit, Hunter! How DO you do it?

CRACK THE SKY: ☆ Book 8 The Preternatural Chronicles: ☆ Hunter Blain ☆

Warped Outta Earth, Crack The Sky Into Outer Space in search of New Fans!

Loving the latest installment in this continuing saga of John Cook the unconventional do-gooding vampire & his rag-tag crew of misfits even more than book 7 if that's possible.
It took me 5 months to read (due to migraines) but glad I persisted.

I felt every emotion the story contained as if they were my own. The highs of wins, friendship & love or be it the lows of pain, loss or losing oneself. Broken like a dam with tears welling in my eyes, trying desperately not to break the dam walls & overcome with a lump in my throat the size of the Grand Canyon. Luckily during the crescendo, my damn house alarm went off for some bizarre reason or else I may have been a bubbling mess.

Hunter my friend, your writing has improved greatly over this series, not only have you have mastered your art forms, your craft & style has grown in intensity it warped outta Earth, Crack the Sky breaking through all 5 levels of atmosphere (& secondary) blasting through the Exosphere & into The Edge of Outer Space in search of new readers & fans! Congratulations Mate, this book was outta this Universe. Absolutely Sensational!

Lately I find myself comparing John a bit to Dexter Morgan, the major difference one's a human serial killer taking out the trash in Florida, while the other is a supernatural serial killer cleansing the world's streets one freak (a supe bad guy/girl) at a time. And a few other differences of course, humour/sarcasticness being another & the posse of friends involved.

Hunter Blain has succeeded here where many other authors fail. Novels where storylines proceed throughout multiple time frames, points in time, space or dimensions Mr Blain has excelled at.
The way this book jumps so easily & effortlessly throughout time, I was at no point lost, found confusing or lost track of the time period, also regular occurrence of this series. An easy read always.

This story contains a tonne of techno babble/jargon in relation to different aspects such as multiple dimensions, real life sciences, practices & theories (not as much as the last) which Hunter has fully researched & put into layman terms for those of us/you who do not have a degree in technology babble or don't speak sci-fi geek/geekess.
Kudos mate, you've crossed all the T's & dotted all the I's.

Hunter Blain & Luke Daniels just go together, like Bogie and Bacall, Batman & Robin, Baseball, Beer & Hotdogs! They are the newest Dynamic Duo in the world of fantasy writing/narration.

Luke Daniels' is an evil genius, his talent is off the scale! He's my favourite male narrator taking Hunter Blain's words, an ode/love letter (just a long continuous one & a promise) to a lost brother from another mother! You are an incredible friend to keep your word Mr Blain, John would be proud & as such could give Shayne Silvers a run for the biggest head! Lol.

Daniel's tones add a level of excitement & perfection to the Preternatural Chronicles!
He's like the cherry onto of the world's best hot fudge sunday! Hilarious character voices switch seamlessly from one character to the next, old to young, male to female and back again! This man really can do it all. There hasn't been a character yet I've not heard Luke narrate to perfection!

Only problem...I could not imagine anyone else voicing John. Hunter, should or when you ever get a Amazon/Netflix TV/ Movie deal, it'll be hard hearing another voice reciting the words of John John-ing On.

Yes, Yes, Yes, I've been asking for a over a year now if authors & narrators would approve of a blooper reel at the end of these books & a few other Argento series. And it finally happened.
Gold, Baby Gold! The funny thing is we the listener could not even hear your stomach noises on the recording, but I lost it listening to Luke losing it each time it happened! Thank you thank you, thank you, it's so appreciate.

Not only did I almost cry, but continually laughed my ass off at your theatratrics! Luke Daniels you are a force to be reckoned with my friend and are a Master at the top of you field. A long-time favourite Narrator.

5☆ Out of 5☆ on Writing, Characters, Emotion, Performance, Voices & the Mastery of ease of storytelling!

I Rate Crack The Sky
(book & Audio) 5☆ Out Of 5☆!

I highly recommend this book, series & author. Run out & buy his books today, you won't regret, Happy Reading your about to start a long & incredible literacy journey of a lifetime.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the author's and also purchase ebook & audio & this is my fair, honest and impartial review as always.

I started off loving this series, loving the snark, the humour, the characters, the narration etc but the last few books have grown darker and more depresssing. It's still well written and funny in places but the dark mood of the stories and wondering from the first few pages how many of the good guys are gonna lose their liberty, their powers, their lives or just change into someone totally different and turn on each other just leaves a feeling of futility and depression. Can't please everyone I guess.

Emotional and intense

This book was intense, there was more emotional carnage than in any of the other books in the series. John is coming to the end of the prophecy and characters on the playing field are slowly being eliminated. His friends are taking the brunt of the fight while John finds the players behind the scenes may not have his best interests at heart. I look forward to the next book to see how John fares.

Just amazing

John is going to be hurt and you know he is after “papa T” asks if this thing has to happen and asks Gabriel again because he knows it might just break him but as this author has shown us over and over one thing can mean so much more like I’m scared this book has been the most devastating emotional one yet because all. The character’s in it have become real and you don’t want to see any of them hurt hurt up with book 9(10,11,12 and 13 please)

As I figured, old HB, has nailed yet another, solid book into his series. As usual, some ish has happened, real or not, to cause a “shift” in the vibe amongst our companions & others. As always I look forward to what’s next in the next book.. this time I’m caught alllll the way up, so book 9 it is. John On!!

amazing fantasy series continues to blow my mind

Hunter is an amazing author who keeps writing these page-turners! These relatable characters and the writing style put me right into the story. Mixing humor with a suspenseful story with great twists makes for my favorite style! My only issue is that I’m now on to book 3 and Hunter says there are only 13! But I want more John On!
