About the author

Vitali Konstantinov was born in Bessarabia (USSR) in 1963. He studied art and architecture in Russia and went on to study graphic art, painting and the history of Byzantine art in Germany. He teaches book illustration at the Hochschule fr Angewandte Wissenschaften in Hamburg. His work has received numerous prizes, including the 'Schaonstes deutsches Buch' prize awarded by the Stiftung Buchkunst for his illustrations in the children's book Seltsame Seiten.

Een redelijk boek over het schrift. Van hoe het begon, verschillende alfabetten, tot verschilende landen en talen en schriften die zij gebruiken. Van bekende tot minder bekende schriften. Ik vond het op zich wel leuk geschreven maar soms was het gewoon ook enorm saai. En het was ook gewoonweg te druk. Er gebeurt heel veel op elke pagina, soms gewoon teveel voor mij. De font was af en toe ook echt te klein en niet fijn leesbaar.
Ik ben nog steeds blij dat ik dit boek heb gevonden, maar ja, het was een gevecht op tijden om hem te lezen. De illustraties waren ook erg leuk.

Het boek voelde wat chaotisch aan, wat mede komt door de grote hoeveelheid details. Hierdoor vond ik het soms erg taaie kost. Toch wel leuke dingen gelezen, zoals communiceren met bloemenbrieven (p.12) en over de analfabetismegrens van het Chinese schrift (p. 23).
De sectie over kunstgeschriften was interessant (over Klingon en andere geschriften uit Midden Aarde). Ik had het leuk gevonden als er nog meer voorbeelden hiervan waren opgenomen in dit boek. Mooi geïllustreerd.

I did not learn much from this book. I think the purpose of the author was not to teach, but to show the diversity of writing systems. I think it manages to do that greatly. So, if you want to understand that there is much more to this world than the bubble that uses the Latin alphabet, this is the book for you.

O lucrare fascinantă și totodată haioasă despre importanța și diversitatea formelor de scriere existente în lume. Departe de a fi un studiu exhaustiv despre scriere, este totuși un bun furnizor de curiozitate în ceea ce privește minunata lume a semnelor grafice menite să fixeze în scris sunetele, mesajele, sentimentele, trăirile tuturor oamenilor lumii.

Molto ben disegnato e lettura piacevole.
Si tratta di una infarinatura sulla vastità di scritture ed alfabeti esistiti ed esistenti (e anche inventati)!
Dato l'argomento immenso il libro propone degli accenni che possono essere approfonditi in separata sede dal lettore stesso.
Sicuramente interessante, ma una volta terminata la lettura mi ha lasciato con un senso di incompletezza e confusione.

Learned a ton of new stuff. Subtracted one star because the structure of the book is a bit random. The page spreads have no narrative arc. Instead it feels like a collection of graphical essays around a specific topic.

De la primele semne grafice și sisteme de scriere, până la alfabete familiare nouă, scrieri artificiale sau din lumi fantastice, precum Pământul de Mijloc sau Star Trek, multe își găsesc (cel puțin) un colț de pagină și reprezentare în acest album grafic.

Dacă vrei să te familiarizezi cu diversitatea sistemelor de scriere, așezate pe un fir cronologic al istoriei universale, cartea îți poate fi un excelent îndrumător. Am apreciat notele umoristice și ador stilul ilustrațiilor – deși, da, unele pagini se simt a fi încărcate atât vizual, cât și informațional.

Deși sunt puține pagini, nu aș recomanda parcurgerea lor într-o singură sesiune celor care nu sunt familiarizați nici cu sistemele de scriere, nici cu istoria. Volumul de informații poate deveni copleșitor, fie și așa, sub formă de ilustrații, iar senzația de plictiseală este apoi la numai o pagină distanță. Și ar fi păcat. Informațiile sunt cu adevărat valoroase, „ambalajul” lor e minunat și cum nu se poate mai potrivit, merită a fi parcurse, consumate și asimilate cu măsură, în momentele potrivite.

Spre final, mi-ar fi plăcut mai multe incursiuni în scrierile noi, „artificiale”, scrierile imaginate pentru lumi fictive. Nu am idee câte există. Tengwar și klingoniana sunt faimoase, dar cu siguranță sunt și altele ce ar fi putut fi ilustrate, mai pe scurt, într-o pagină, două. Raportat la marea istorie, părticica lor e mică, știu, nici măcar nu pot fi așezate pe aceeași axă temporală. Ar sublinia însă tocmai ideea cărții de față: cât de ingenioși sunt oamenii când vine vorba de comunicare și cât de importante sunt sistemele de scriere în ecosistemul nostru cultural, într-atât încât cele 292 de sisteme de scriere inventate de-a lungul istoriei nu ne pot cuprinde imaginația, fiind nevoie și de altele, special create pentru lumile noastre fictive...
