She’d done what she should, now she was going to do what she dared...
Terin Campbell had been obedient. And she’d been desperate. But now? Many would say she’d won the day. Triumphed over the evil planned for her by her late husband and his mother. Terin was still alive and faced with the question of what to do with the rest of her life.
And there was only one thing she was certain of... she wasn’t waiting around for her family to decide her fate.
Was she brazen?
Yes. And for the rest of her days, she was going to follow her own path. Strike out for a place where rumors said a woman could make a place for herself. It might me myth, it might end in her death along the side of the road, but Terin was going to take the chance because she was finished with being submissive.
She wasn’t his responsibility.
Jasper was a third born son and he had to carve his spot out, but the truth was, he enjoyed the challenge that presented. But it didn’t leave much time for rescuing others. But there was something about the little half-starved girl shivering in a common room in the middle of a snowstorm that claimed his attention. It wasn’t the way her little frame shook... no, it was the determination in her eyes.
She was brazen, and bold, and determined to make it north no matter the risk.
It sparked something inside him. A need he wasn’t willing to question because all that seemed to matter was the way it felt to give her enough help to keep her going. She wanted to carve out her place too and it struck him that maybe, just maybe she was his soulmate... Jasper had no intention of losing the chance to find out.
Mary Wine has written over twenty novels that take her readers from the pages of history to the far reaches of space. Recent winner of a 2008 EPPIE Award for erotic western romance, her book LET ME LOVE YOU was quoted “Not to be missed…” by Lora Leigh, New York Times best-selling author.

From corsets and knickers to court dresses of Elizabeth I, the most expensive clothes she owns are hundreds of years out of date. She’s also an active student of martial arts, having earned the rank of second degree black belt.
Another great addition to the Highland Rogues series. This one with Terin and Jasper (who was in the last story) and their winding road to love!
Terin is escaping from her the terrible family of her deceased husband, who threatened her life... and making a new beginning by traveling to her aunt's. Dressed as a lad she hopes she can get by without anyone recognizing her.
Stopping at an Inn, Jasper and his sister end up getting stalled in a snow storm. He notices a lad, who seems to need help, and then realizes it is a lass, Terin!
Great adventure with two characters who just need to find their way to each other!
We meet Terrin in the previous book The Highlander's Captive. She has escaped and is trying to make her way to family disguised as a boy. Jasper comes across her and see through her disguise. He helps her back to his family home. There his mother gets into the matchmaking business and helps them out.
In an era where women were used as pawns to cement alliances and parcelled off in marriage, Terin considers herself lucky to have not only survived her abusive marriage but her evil mother-in-law as well. I found this book full of intrigue and suspense as Terin makes her escape into the snowy wilds, and by keeping her wits about her, she perchance lands up in the path of the one man who can lead her to her destination safely. When Jasper first espies Terin, he cannot but help notice that there is something odd about her. The longer he looks at her, the more he realizes that she is a woman on the run and he knows just where to take her. Having read previous books in this series, I was so glad that I was able to read this book too as it brings healing and redemption to those who have been scorned. I received a copy of this romance as a gift from Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
An usual settlement in the highlands is the destination for Terrin, that’s where she will find her aunt and with Jaspers help her future. A really enjoyable and satisfying read from Mary that you won’t want to put down till the end.
Thrilling storyline and entertaining characters, so addictive and great to read.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
I'm really enjoying the Highland Rogues series by Mary Wine and this one was just as good as the others. This time it's Jasper and Terin's story which is full of adventure, danger and passion. Well written, this story kept my attention and interest.
Terin, pretending to be a lad, is on a mission to control her own life and escape the danger she had been in with her dead husband's family. On her way to her aunt's place, she comes upon Jasper and his sister and finds herself in their care. It doesn't take long for Jasper to realize Terin is a lass and not a lad, and he also feels an immediate attraction to her. He needs to make her his wife but she will need a lot of convincing!
I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This follows Book followers the last book in “The Highlander’s Captive,” where it shows how The Duncan Clan was nothing but pure evil. They wanted a woman with royal blood and would do anything to obtain it even murder the current wife with no blue blood! Now Terin Campbell who had been married to the abusive Laird, Goron Duncan and his muderous mother Benedicta are both dead. Benedicta was the mastermind in committing murder who planned out to the evil details of Terin’s murder. Yet be careful what you wish for, as Benedicta ended up being poisoned by mistake instead of Terin which her muderous mother-in-law had planned in detail all along! In their four years of marriage her husband had never even touched Terin who is still an innocent and untouched. Of course he lied saying she was barren. This book is shows how Terin escapes trying to reach her Aunt Davonna was taking sanctuary and taking in orphans and widows at Clan Chattan. This also introduced Jasper Chattan in the last book that is the hero of this story.
Jasper is a third son and had been bringing his sixteen year old Klanna sister for her future husband, who she was obviously way too young for. Luckily the groom had realized that too. His mother would have been so distraught and had his head on a platter, if he had abandoned his young sister so he is bringing his sister home too. This had been his father’s idea for a clan alliance to avoid a war, of course he did this when his wife was away as she would have never allowed her young daughter to be sacrificed like this! Now Jasper is introduced to Terin who is in a disguise as a lad and befriends the lad. Except after studying all the details of her he realized she was a Lass. He wondered why she was hiding her true identity? Plus if the church found out this Lass would be in an enormous amount of trouble!
This story shows how Terin and Jasper are both trying to make their way in the world on their own terms. It also shows how they are drawn to each. Will they have some issues in their road to love? Read and find out in another magnificent Mary Wine story!
You can read as a stand alone book or series order. I recommend reading each story but if you are new to this author you will be fine reading as a stand alone book too.
Mary Wine is an author I have been reading for many years and always love her storytelling abilities. As I am always swept away in her romantic suspense stories which is always a pure delight to read! It has all the details that Scottish historical romance readers love.
An excellent take of high adventure as Mary Wine has written a choice story filled with compassion with a special understanding of human motivation and love. Again another book readers don’t want to miss!
Highland Rogues by Mary Wine Book 1 The Highlander’s Demand Book 2 The Highlander’s Destiny Book 3 The Highlander’s Captive Book 4 The Highlander’s Promise
Disclaimer: Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy and an advance reader copy from Dragonblade publishers. I voluntarily agreed to do a fair review and blog through netgalley. All thoughts, ideas and words are my own.
The Highlander's Promise by Mary Wine is an exciting Highlander romance. Jasper Chattan is returning from delivering his sister to her future husband, who, thankfully, thought she was too young, so she is returning as well. His mother would have killed him if he had left her there. As it was, his father had sent her when her mother was not there, to avoid the battle that would have ensued. At the inn in which they stopped for the night he picked up a "lad" who appeared to be in need of a friend. Even then, Jaspar knew "he" was a woman and eventually discovered she was called Terin. What he didn't know was why "he" was passing herself off as a lad. Needless to say, it made for a good story.
It was an interesting back-story. Jasper's mother had been betrothed to Jasper's uncle, and Jasper's father, to Davonna. When Jasper's uncle died, things got muddled. In order to keep both dowries, both brides had to stay. Obviously they could not stay in the same keep so Davonna was sent off to Larks Point Tower, where over the years she had made a rumbling pile of rocks into an enterprise paying its own way; it was a welcoming place for women and orphans, and it had it won set of rules. Jasper had been the chief there for years, earning the position though hard work and being an excellent master. Davonna was Terin's aunt and so she was made welcome and absorbed in to the community. As do all good men, Jasper had an enemy, one who planned him ill will, which never came to pass since Jasper treated everyone well, including the bad guy's lackeys. This was a terrific plot, just enough going on to keep the reader interested. It was different and compelling. The story of Davonna's Larks Point Tower was refreshing and noble. A good read. I recommend it.
I was invited to read The Highlander's Promise by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #netgalley #thehighlanderspromise
This fourth book of Mary Wine's Highland Rogues Series takes place right after the last book. It is Terin Campbell's escape from the Duncan family. This is a tale of a woman who is determined to survive and make her own choices in life instead of blindly being controlled by men. Along the way she discovers a man, Jasper Chattan, a third son, who is also determined to make his way in the world. Together they forge a future I found an interesting tale of finding home and happiness. I knew I liked Jasper from the previous book. Terin was a surprise to discover with her heart looking to be loved.
Terin's bully of a husband Goron, the Duncan Laird was dead, leaving her a virgin after four years of marriage. Her dominating mother-in-law, Benedicta was also dead, by her own plans for Terin so it was her time to escape. Benedicta tried to poison her. Terin turned the tables on her and had the poisoned meal delivered to Benedicta instead. Disguising herself as a lad, she strikes out on foot to find her widowed Aunt Davonna. Terin has heard her home on Chattan land is sanctuary taking in widows and orphans. This is when we find Jasper Chattan returning home from book 3, The Highlander's Captive. His sister Kianna, was the too young prospective bride for Rolfe Munro. When forced to find sanctuary during a snow storm, Jasper is drawn to the bedraggled lad he finds at poor excuse for an inn. The lad is hungry, half frozen and being left to fend on the floor of the over crowded inn. This starts the story of two strong individuals determined to find a place and happiness for their futures. Jasper quickly sees through Terin's disguise to see she's a woman escaping from somewhere and he determines to help her escape. He finds himself fascinated with her but uncertain to her motives...is she a spy or just desperate? I loved watching them fall in love.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thank you to Netgalley and Dragonblade Publishing, Inc for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I didn't know when I requested this book that is the four book in the 'Highland Rogues' series. I don't think this matter too much as each book seems to centre about different characters, although I might have missed some background on a few of the main characters.
Terin Campbell is living a dreary life, being married off young and widowed she has managed to survive after her Husbands Mother and family has tried to poison her. Hoping to get to the safety of her Aunts keep and live a quite life Terin sets out on the road dressed as a boy. Whilst taking shelter and food in an Inn one night, Terin comes face to face with Jasper, he has stopped at the Inn also to get shelter for his sister who he is travelling with, having just saved her from marriage to an old man. He noticed Terin for all the wrong reasons and quickly realises she is a lass in need of help. He basically takes hold of her and before she knows it she is part of his riding party. Thinking she is getting away with her disguise she is flummoxed to realise both he and his Mother know who she is and will help her at whatever cost.
This is a fun, historical romance. All the characters are very easy to like and all good humoured. I will probably go back and read the other books in the series as I actually finished this one in a couple of hours. It was delightful and has the ingredients I look for in a book of this genre. The chemistry between the characters was off the charts, and done in such a way it was very entertaning.
I've read all the books in the series. Yes, it can be a stand alone, but you will get more enjoyment if you read the series and especially The Highlander's Captive. At first when I read this I thought I'd read it before because it was so familiar to me. I researched and realized it was because part of this story was in Highlander's Captive. It was a set up for this one.
The h has had an awful last 4 years, being in an awful marriage and attempted poisoning by her husband's mother. She decides to escape and dresses as a lad to make it to her aunt's home. She luckily runs into the H who realizes she isn't a lad at all. Some funny dialogue during this time with the h not knowing the H is on to her disguise.
Unique story line about the sanctuary the h's aunt has set up. Interesting main and secondary character's too. There is lovemaking, outside of marriage heat level 5 out of 5 and described a few times.
Some suspense and twists that kept the story moving. Someone was sent to spy and I thought for sure the author would take us on the path of a cookie cutter outcome - NOPE! Oh, how I enjoyed the twists in that aspect of the story - Great Job Mary!
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, some romance, steam - bedroom door pretty wide open. Lord's name used once. I enjoyed the epilogue a few months in the future. I recommend this author and series. (ljb)
Terin Campbell has made her escape running from a terrible marriage and a mother-in-law that tried to kill her. Dressing as a boy Terin is trying to make her way to her aunt to hopefully start a new life. When Terin stops for the night at a public house to get out of the weather she finds one of the only spots left to try to get some sleep. When a group of Highlanders stop for the night Terin tries to make herself as inconspicuous as possible.
Jasper is returning his sister home when they stop for the night when he spies a lad who doesn’t quite look right. When it hits Jasper the boy is actually a girl. For some reason Jasper can’t help but feeling protective for the girl Jasper finds out that she is traveling to Chatten lands he offers for her to travel along, letting her believe they think she is a boy.
Terin can’t believe her luck she will be traveling with the Highlanders to Chatten lands where her aunt lives. As they travel Terin feels that the handsome Jasper knows her secret.
You definitely don’t want to miss the story of Terin and Jasper! Jasper will have a time trying to convince Terin that she is his, but Terin has secrets of her own. You will love watching Terin find her true self and Jasper making her dreams come true!
This is the fourth and final novel in this Highland Rogues series. The previous novel introduced both Jasper and Terin (the two protagonists of the current novel) and gave a brief insight into their personalities. The Highlander’s Promise seems as if it is divided into two parts. The first part tells of Terin’s escape from the Gordon and how she meets Jasper. The attraction is mutual. This part has a certain flowing rhythm to it. The story then moves on to Larks Point Tower where Jasper is the Chief. Terin finally meets her aunt there and learns her story. I felt that this section of the novel was rather disjointed, jumping around among the many new characters who are introduced. It’s here that the “villain” shows up with his dastardly plan to get Jasper hanged. Everything comes together finally in a clever way.
I always enjoy Mary Wine’s historical romances. She comes up with unique characters who face multiple challenges throughout the novel; and although you know that there will be a HEA ending, it’s how she gets there that makes for an enjoyable and satisfying read
I'm really loving the highland rogues! All of the heroes in this series are fierce, sexy, protective, and loyal. Jasper Chattan stands out in this desirable group because he is the chief of an area that is dedicated to sheltering and empowering women, Larks Point. How could he get any better? Jasper falls for Terin Campbell, a young widow disguised as a lad, who seeks asylum at Larks Point. There's trouble in Larks Point that threatens the couple's budding relationship.
Normally, the couple in an HR novel resolves the conflict together. That does not happen here. I would have liked to see the couple working as a team. However, Jasper and Terin still have a strong relationship that is built on mutual respect, and it was great to watch their relationship blossom.
Larks Point had interesting secondary characters, and I could see a spinoff series based on this area like Tessa Dare's Spindle Cove. Definitely, lots of potential here!
Jasper Chatten spies a young lad who he realizes is in actuality a young woman. He sets out to convince her to travel with his group of Highlanders taking his younger sister back home to Chatten. Widowed Terin Campbell had been obedient and she knows her father will be finding another marriage for her unless she escapes and disappears. She comes upon Jasper and his sister and decides to travel to Chatten. Jasper slowly tries to get her to reveal herself, he tries to get her to trust him. Jasper has never had these feeling before for a young woman and feels he’s found his mate, but now to convince her to marry him and keep her safe. A captivating story of love in the Highlands between clans and love always finds a way as a young woman decides what to do with the rest of her life, chose her own life or wait for someone to chose for her. I voluntarily read and reviewed this extraordinary story.
Terin Campbell barely survived her marriage. Now she's a widow and not going to wait for someone else to decide how she will live the rest of her life. She has a destination in mind, but traveling alone in winter is scary.
Jasper Chattan is thankfully returning his sister home. It will save him trouble from his mother. At a stop on the way home a youngster attracts his attention. This could make the trip much more fun.
Our independent heroine calls on all of her courage to get the new life she wants. Our mischievous hero is a third son, so has had to make his own place in the world. Now he is a respected Chief at an unusual outpost.
This is part of a series but easily read on it's own.
So Thrilled To Have Read Another Story by Mary Wine
This was one great book, I just loved the characters and storyline so much. Great pairing of Terin and Jasper. I can’t wait to read the next book. Write Fast Please!! 💜💜💜💜💜😊😊😊😊😊🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💜💜💜💜💜
I enjoyed the book. I actually laughed out loud. I loved the interaction between the main characters. My only issue was that at times it seemed the story jumped from events. There were some transitions that were not smoothed. Overall it was a fun read.
It was a good story but it is quite sexual. So a lot of pages were skipped because I don’t like those kind of romances. Anyway, I gave it a five for the story itself not the sex scenes.
I liked masters story what a wonderful love story this was. The plot was well written and I liked each and everyone of the characters both good and evil.
This was a fun story to read. I enjoyed Davonna and the home she offered her people. It was one big happy family. Glad Tiren found her happily ever after.
