Daughters of Courage #3

The Fearless Miss Dinah

Rate this book
In his mind, nothing is more important than the plan.
In her mind, ruining the plan would be even better.

For months now, Miss Dinah Mulgrave has been hiding that she’s a spy, working to stop smugglers. A pretty dress, a charming smile, and a little flirting are all that's necessary for a lady to learn all sorts of secrets. But when she’s sent on the most dangerous mission thus far, things turn terribly wrong. Though she escapes unharmed, a man’s cover is blown. Not only that, but the two of them are caught in a compromising situation. There is nothing for it but to wed.

As a resigned bachelor secretly working to stop the smuggler who murdered his closest friend, Lord Henry Stanton lives life by a strict plan. But after a certain lovely, yet spontaneous young woman throws one of his plans for a loop, Henry finds himself no longer with a viable cover or a means of getting justice for his friend. As if that wasn’t enough, he must marry the very woman who destroyed all he’d worked years for.

Dinah and Henry begin life together as little more than strangers. Though Dinah approaches this new change in her life optimistically, Henry puts his foot down—he will never see her as more than another family member living under his roof. But Dinah isn’t ready to give up on love and romance. And as her cousin and sister have proved, no one gainsays a Mulgrave. Not even one’s own husband.

As the third stand-alone novel in a new series by author Laura Rollins, The Fearless Miss Dinah continues the Daughters of Courage series. This charming story is a light-hearted, clean and wholesome romance set in the Regency era (think: a clean Bridgerton). All books in this series have their own Happily-Ever-After and can be read apart but are best enjoyed in proper order.

Laura Rollins has always loved a heart-melting happily ever after. It didn’t matter if the story took place in Regency England, or in a cobbler’s shop, if there was a sweet romance, she would read it.

Life has given her many of her own adventures. Currently she lives in the Rocky Mountains with her best-friend, who is also her husband, and their four beautiful children. She still loves to read books and more books; her favorite types of music are classical, Broadway, and country; she loves hiking in the mountains near her home; and she’s been known to debate with her oldest son about whether Infinity is better categorized as a number or an idea.

Some authors do a great job at making a character appear one way – whether they first appear unlikable or frivolous or shy, once the author gives the character their own story, it can take the reader by surprise. This was my experience with The Fearless Miss Dinah. Dinah’s story begins in a way that I never would have imagined based on who I thought her to be up until that point. It is such an intriguing start that grabbed my attention immediately.

I know some readers try to avoid tropes, but the marriage of convenience trope, when done as well as it is in this novel, is one of my favorites. Rollins creates a delicious tension between Dinah and Henry. Dinah’s spirit is indomitable against Henry’s wall of stoicism, and even his misgivings have a realistic basis for existing. He’s not just mean for the sake of being mean, and I appreciate the depth to his character. If you like a bit of a brooding hero up against a heroine that is determined to make the best of things, you'll enjoy these two.

I enjoyed the secondary characters as well. Of course, the ones from the previous books, but also Henry’s eclectic extended family that lived in his household. This series has just been a delight to read, and I’m excited that Charlotte and Seth get their own story after all of their careful planning and hopes for the lives of those in their care. I do think this one is my favorite of the series so far!

Truthfully, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this one since I wasn’t sure if I liked Dinah from the previous books. I was totally wrong. She is now my favorite from the three daughters of courage books and I’m so glad I read this book!

Laura Rollins made this story completely different than I expected, in a good way. There was action, friendship, romance, and adventure. I was thoroughly entertained with this one. Plus, I love me a brooding hero. 😍😍😍

Okay, whoa. I have rarely been so surprised by a book in the first chapter but this book was completely different than what I was expecting based on what I *thought* I knew of Dinah's character from the rest of the series.

I will just say she is not at all who I thought she was and I like her so much more now that I know the real her and what she is really up to.

I am a sucker for a good marriage of convenience story and this one was fabulously done. Great chemistry, fun banter, and romantic tension between Dinah and Henry. Add in the suspense and mystery and this was definitely a five star read for me.

Hands down my favorite book in the series and I am looking forward to Charlotte and Seth's story next!

I received a complimentary copy but was not required to leave a review.

Dear Mrs. Rollins,

It simply must be said: this book is the best in the series, hands down! I am big fan of lots of character development and a character-driven story and this book delivered. Henry and Delilah are not characters that could drive you crazy then you learn their backstories and you feel more love for them and understanding for why they do what they do. But then they also grow a ton throughout the book, which makes them even better. I also really loved the way you did the marriage of convenience and forced proximity in these stories. Mmm. My favorite.

To be honest, I didn’t much like Dinah or Henry at the beginning of this book. In the previous two books, Dinah came across as flighty, shallow, and self-centered. But oh goodness did I ever judge her wrong! You really surprised me with her character! So I suppose I should have said that before going into this book I didn’t like Dinah. But my estimation of her changed rather quickly. It was Henry that took time for me to warm up to. Ultimately though I ended up really liking him. The first thing that started softening my heart towards him was his loyalty and utter devotion to the people he loved. He may have seemed hard but inside he was truly nothing more than a big gooey marshmallow.

I loved your cast of side characters, especially David and Emily and Uncle Jeffery. He really cracked me up! I loved his endless stories. Maybe he needs a little book of his own with some short stories, eh? That could be fun to read!

I have been enjoying your series so much! I’m so so happy Charlotte will be getting her story next and I hope you answer a few questions for me in that book, because I still have some.

Thank you for the delightful book. I went into it prepared not to love it because, as you recall, I already didn’t like the protagonist. But your book was a pleasant, lovely surprise. I love it!

Your fan and Dinah & Henry’s hopeful friend,
Jessica

This story has some of my favorite elements: misunderstandings, adventure, adversity, a brooding hero, a spunky but kind heroine, a forced marriage and a little romance to round it all out. This is the third book in the Daughters of Courage series. It can be read as a standalone and the author does a good job of filling us in on previous characters (but don’t miss books one and two for more sweet romance and the full backstory). This is my favorite so far for the added adventure and brooding leading man, Henry, the Earl of Stanton. It was great to see Dinah as a strong, compassionate young lady who feels deeply and loves fully. Henry is an honorable, serious man who cares for his family but he has some issues to work through before he’s ready for love. I enjoyed everything about this book and didn’t want it to end. There is a nice epilogue that sets up the next book and I hope to see more of Henry and Dinah then as well.

I received a free ebook to review but have already ordered the paperback for my shelves. A positive review was not required and all opinions are my own.

The Fearless Miss Dinah is third in the series and I think my favorite of the series! Although I’m super excited for the next book because I can tell something has been brewing with Ms. Blackmoore!
Forced Marriage is one of my too favorite troupes and this one hits the mark! Dinah is feisty and fearless then Henry is hesitant and reserved. They each need each other and it takes a lot of effort on Dinah’s part to open Henry up. I loved watching them grow together as individuals and as a couple. Although it took a while, their conversations and openness in other aspects of life during their daily life was adorable. That friendship is such a great base of marriage.
This book was relaxing. The little family is beautiful and it’s been a joy to keep going back into their lives. The care and love is inspiring.

What a fun and fabulous story! I really enjoyed this book, especially how it was so unexpected right from the start. The twists in the book were so good and the plot kept me interested and entertained the entire time I was reading.
Dinah wasn't what I was expecting her to be based on the first two books in this series and yet the way her character was revealed fit perfectly! I definitely think she's my favorite of the three, I smiled so much reading this book.
The chemistry was so well-written. I love that the author had Dinah fight for her relationship and that she made Henry communicate with her even when he was such a bear. I laughed a couple of times at her antics. Henry was so swoony even with all his grumpiness at times. I just wanted to give him a hug and I LOVED how he cared for Dinah! Seriously, I want to reread this book already. I highly recommend it! This is a clean Regency romance with lots of swoon and memorable moments.
I received an advance reader copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

#BookReview: THE FEARLESS MISS DINAH by Laura Rollins 4.5 stars

It’s nice to read about a family that I am already familiar with. I have been waiting patiently to read Dinah’s story. She acted differently than her sister and cousin and received a lot of proper advice. I thought that after reading the prologue, this would be similar to the previous two books. Well, this one surprised me. Dinah’s past actions have more meaning now and she is definitely fearless. She has a big heart and is willing to lay it out there no matter the cost.

The romance is so good. I think this is the best one yet in the series. Henry was certain that their marriage of convenience would be in name only. Henry is a brooding hero but he met his match with Dinah. She might be unpredictable to his well laid out plans but they both give wholeheartedly. The scene with the rat was scary, funny and sweet altogether. So many things happened and the story didn’t drag on. This is a story of family, suspense and loving fully. I really enjoyed this book and I didn’t want it to end yet.

Thank you for the complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

Truly a captivating read! I couldn’t seem to put this one down. Yes, Lord Stanton’s issues were sometimes frustrating, but it didn’t even matter. The writing style is gripping and I became thoroughly invested in the story and outcome. Dinah is a surprisingly endearing character with her optimistic, empathetic, and determined nature. I liked the spy aspects in the beginning and would’ve actually liked to have seen the two work an assignment together as part of their relationship development… but all good 🤓

There is some action and danger, but it’s mostly at the beginning and ending. A large part of the book is focused on relationships, between the MCs but also with family. There is a swift pace and I didn’t lose interest once.

Though it could be read as a standalone, I’d recommend reading the prior books of the series first for better context.

Content:
There is no foul language or sex. There is some violence, but it’s not excessive. The romance is limited to a few lightly descriptive kisses. There is no mention of faith or God.

"Henry may consider himself a decisive man - but he'd never come up against Mulgrave stubbornness. And no man faced such a force and remained unaffected."

This is my favorite Laura Rollins book to date! Dinah is fiesta, stubborn, determined, and good. Henry is broody and dark but with a strong moral compass. This book totally hooked me right from the beginning and was a complete surprise in how it gets started. I absolutely love the work they put in to make their relationship better and not just a marriage of convenience. This book is full of great lines, pining, romance, and a little spy work. Definitely the best in the series!

Oh snap. I did not even guess correctly on what Dinah's story was going to be like but in even my wildest guesses, I didn't think she would be so flighty because of the spy realm. Well... I can't say I am disappointed.

In fact the action at the end was intense, surprising, and whooo man, my favorite.

I love the growth in this one. Both characters needed a big bowl it.

I know Laura Rollins has heard this before yet I can't help but repeat it, book 3 is my favorite. So I can only assume that book 4 is going to knock that saying out of the park.

Thank you my #arc. These options are my own.

Loved this one. My favorite of the series. Dinah was very likeable. Our leading man Henry was such a dream 🥰. He comes across as gruff and has sworn off love, evening telling Dinah that he would never fall in love. Of course she takes this as a challenge and isn't afraid to try and prove him wrong. I couldn't put it down.

I Love arraigned marriage stories and this was a good one. Iv'e read the other books in the series but never remember the others so you could read this without reading the other books. This is a proper romance with some sweet kisses and some good tension. Both characters were good, the story line believable for the most part. If you are a stickler to the rules of the time this might drive you crazy. She is a spy at 19 and does things no regency miss of the Ton would do:}

Fearless Miss Dinah

This is my favorite of the Daughters of Courage series so far! It felt different than the other two, and I enjoyed the pace and setting of it immensely! Dinah is a fearless woman, and when she’s forced into a rather loveless marriage, her fearlessness is tested all the greater.

Henry was awesome, though a bit stubborn in his moodiness at times—though it made sense. I also prefer a broody man over one who makes too much sport of life.

I thought the story unfolded well, the plot captivating, and the romance sweet and clean. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.

Well done, Laura!

A delightful, engaging Regency romance . . .

'The Fearless Miss Dinah' is the third installment in the author's 'Daughters of Courage' series. I have not read the first two stories in the series, but the author has done a fine job of slipping information about previous characters and events into this plot.

This book is lovely in every way. Beginning with the beautiful cover art and on into the interior design, this book is unique because of the daffodil flourishes used in each chapter and the fact that the pages between chapters, which would have been blank, have been printed with a daffodil design.

The plot features well-developed characters including Miss Dinah Mulgrave, Lord Henry Stanton, and supporting characters including family members and an assortment of less-than-desirable villains. There are some suspenseful moments and events in the book which kept me on the edge of my seat. There was also a lingering humor throughout the book which I appreciated.

Dinah is an independent and strong-willed young woman who challenges society's boundaries and rules at every turn. I found her to be filled with compassion, kindness, and courage. She did not back down from the challenges and obstacles thrown in her path. She was well-liked and well-loved by her family and friends even though she was a little unconventional for the time period.

Lord Henry Stanton is a man who takes his family responsibilities very seriously. He is a gentleman in every way, but he is reserved and hesitant to open himself up to new relationships due to a traumatic event in his past. He is brave and does not turn away from danger when he is set on accomplishing a task.

The author cleverly led the reader into wanting to read installment four in the series. I hope to read the first two books in the series as well as the final book when it is released.

Highly-recommended for fans of Christian/clean historical romance, Christian/clean Regency romance, and Christian/clean British historical fiction. This book is completely clean in language and content.

I received a paperback copy of this book from the author through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my thoughts and opinions expressed here are solely my own.

This had all the makings of a five star book! It started out so strong and I loved the characters early on. I couldn’t wait to see how their marriage of convenience progressed and get like I was going to absolutely LOVE Henry, but then… I didn’t really! Unfortunately I think it slowed down a bit for me in the middle. I kept waiting for Dinah to crack Henry’s rough exterior and while there were glimpses of his softer side, Dinah and Henry’s relationship stayed mostly the same until the very end (some miscommunication or lack of communication at play) even though they both had feelings early on. The author told us how they felt through the character’s inner thoughts, but there wasn’t much showing them together exploring those feelings. An enjoyable enough read with some adventure lightly sprinkled in. Some of the plot was a bit clunky and I didn’t feel like I got to know the characters on a deeper level, which made the ending feel so rushed.

The Fearless Miss Dinah
Daughters of Courage #3
By Laura Rollins

Miss Dinah Mulgrave knows that her London Season is coming to a close and she is no closer to achieving the love match she has always hoped for. Worse she has entangled herself in a bit of a scandal for which there is no solution but one - marry the gentleman with whom she's had a most unpleasant experience.
Lord Henry Stanton never wanted to marry but when his good intentions go awry he finds himself engaged to a most unsuitable miss. And he lays the blame for his situation squarely on her.

But The Fearless Miss Dinah is much more than its opening as Dinah and Henry adjust to their new life together. Henry can't let go of the past and its disappointments. He's convinced that Dinah will be just a repeat of what he's experienced in the past and as such he refuses to let her into his life. Unfortunately, for Henry, Dinah isn't about to let herself be stuck in a marriage that has a bleak future ahead of it.

This is an excellent read with characters who grab ahold of your attention and let it go until the very end. This is a clean read set during the Regency era and offers more than one unexpected twist to keep this reader up late into the night reading. If you have yet to read the first 2 books in this series don't worry as you will easily be able to get into the story without any difficulty. And there is a whole array of characters willing to let slip a few details about what came before so you'll want to pick up the previous books later to get caught up just because.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

I loved that the story had an unexpected beginning, as we get to see a side of Dinah's personality that we haven't seen in the earlier stories in the series.

“If there was one thing Dinah prided herself on, it was getting out of scrapes. Part of the reason she was so good at it was that she’d had a lot of practice.”

I really enjoyed getting to know her character and see how her vivaciousness for life and her zest to rise to every challenge impacts the way she approaches romantic adventures. I loved her journey of fighting for the life and the future that she wants.

I really enjoyed the way that the marriage of convenience impacted the growth and development of this relationship. The side cast of family members and fun personalities made this new family such a pleasure to meet and read about throughout the book. The romance was sweet and had me cheering on these two main characters as they traversed some rocky terrain before finally finding their happily ever after!

This was one of my favorite moments of the book and a beautiful reminder for all of us, no matter what stage of life we are in:

“Instead of one grand moment of courage, this would take daily, consistent, small acts of bravery. But she could do it. She could be fearless in a daily, consistent way."

Okay. This series. Daughters of Courage. The stories are as beautiful as the covers. And I particularly enjoyed this one.
- Dinah and Henry
- I love this book already
- I'm so here for forced marriages. Because it's always between two good people that don't believe in love, but stay tuned, it's coming whether they believe in it or not!
- I like Charlotte
- all the plans 🤣 I imagine my husband could feel his pain
- Henry's thoughts are kind of heartbreaking
- I like her willingness and effort to make make most of the situation. She isn't pouting and worried about the forced marriage. She found the good. I applaud her.
- "His dear Dinah" 😍
- I am SO excited for the next book!!
- Uncle is great. I love his stories
- such a sweet story.
- I love forced proximity. I love that you get to see them be together and interact. It's so sweet and makes their eventual love so much better for me. And clearly their love is about me. 🤣😉
- it reminds me a bit of Friends and Foes by Sarah Eden 👌
.
If you love love, forced proximity, secret identities, entertaining families, crazy uncles and sigh inducing scenes, this book is 100% for you.
.
Have you read it yet??

I really liked this one!
Miss Dinah's family worries that her flirtatious ways will keep her from finding a husband. What they don't realize is that it's a cover to find out information. When she gets asked to help with a kidnapping case, she sneaks out, hoping to be home shortly. But things don't go according to plan. Now, she's being forced into a marriage that neither of them want. Will her new husband hate and avoid her for the rest of his days? Can they build a friendship? Or will something more develop?
It was fun having a bit of spying at the beginning and seeing what was to happen when Dinah was forced to be married.
It was a clean read and well-written. I enjoyed the author's style so it'll be worth it to go back and read the first 2 books and then finish out the rest of the series.

Being bold and fearless can lead to a couple of endings. First you have great adventures and second you have your reputation ruined. If your reputation is ruined you are shamed and spend your life in poverty and scorn. That was not the case for the fearless lady in this situation. Her dealings with the Bow Street runners were initially were eavesdropping at balls as she flirted with gentlemen. Until she was given the assignment of rescuing a child who had been kidnapped. In the attempt she was caught by a ring of smugglers but saved by a gentleman. Unfortunately, her delay in returning to her home was noted and she would have been ruined except the gentleman offered to marry her. The downside was the gentleman had declared never to marry and was very cold and sullen.

This book right here is just incredible! After reading the rest of the series, I did not see the direction the series was going with Dinah’s story coming! Wow! Forced/Marriage of Connivence is one of my favorite tropes and this book delivers! Throw in Age Gap, and a little bit of grumpy Male Main Character who vows never to love and a fearless Female Main Character determined to change that and it’s just an amazing story! The chemistry, the angst between Dinah and Henry is just so beautifully written and you can just feel the emotion as you read! Could not put it down! “The Fearless Miss Dinah” has definitely become one of my very favorite books! This book deserves more than 5 stars! Very Clean and I definitely recommend!! This is book 3 in the Daughters of Courage Series.

I had really mixed feelings going into this one, mostly because I couldn’t remember anything about the previous two except being a bit disappointed in the second book. At some point in this one I remembered I hadn’t liked the heroine of the second book all that much. I went back and read my review of the book and realized I hadn’t liked it much at all. And I still cannot remember a thing about the first book, which can’t speak well of it.

I am happy to report here that I liked Dinah much, much, much, much better than I had liked Rachel and overall this story was much better and more interesting than Rachel’s. Good light, fluffy romance.

Loved Dinah and her strong witty personality! Loved that she didn’t cower and turn into a what if and what is he thinking and I can’t do it personality… she stayed true to her character and kept going at it! This was a fun story, kind of like a beauty and the beast mixed with some smuggling…
The beginning was a bit in the unbelievable to the way it all transpired type, but if ya just go with it it makes for a fun book to read! Fun characters and plot and just kept me wanting to finish the book all at once- cute and fun and perfect for an evening snuggle on the couch book!

I really loved A Wish For Father Christmas by this author and I’m not getting that same feeling now that I’ve read two other books from her. Kinda disappointing! I liked this story but it was starting to get hopelessly sad. And then when it turned around I felt like Henry’s character wasn’t as believable with Dinah. The epilogue to this series is about Dinah’s dad and Lady Blackmore(the next book in this series). I would’ve preferred the epilogue in this book to be about Dinah and Henry after they finally clicked! Both characters had great personalities and there were some hilarious moments! It was still entertaining-I read most of it in a day.

Caught in a trap

Dinah has been doing everything in her power to provide for she and her aunt. Working as a seamstress for a London dress maker is hardly enough to keep a roof over their heads, especially with her aunt's medicines. She's made a deal with a man who's shown how wicked he is as Dinah continues to delay her agreement to marry the villain. Now with his threats and harshness, she knows she cannot marry him, but she sees no other option. He promises to provide a home, food, security, and his family doctor to see to her aunt's health, but at what cost to Dinah?!

Marriage of Convenience

I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book. Dinah came across spoiled and lacking in judgement in her sisters’ books. I was very glad to be proved wrong! She’s impulsive and fearless, but not what she had appeared. I loved seeing her go toe to toe with Henry and his family. This book was a perfect blend of adventure and romance!

I am also glad this series is not over yet. Bring on Lady Blackmore’s story!

Each book can be read independently, but all are delightful!
