Campus Heartthrob

Rate this book
From USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Sucevic comes a sexy, new standalone novel.
Brayden Kendricks might be God’s gift to the female species at Western University, but I want nothing to do with the dark-haired football player. The guy is an attention seeking you-know-what who soaks up fan adoration like it’s his due in life for being hot and talented.
Damn. Did I just say that?
All right, fine...I’ll grudgingly admit that Brayden is decent looking. I suppose if you’re into guys who resemble Greek gods with abs of steel and chiseled pecs, then sure, one could consider him attractive.
Am I guilty of having a tiny, practically non-existent crush on him freshman year?
I’d prefer not to answer that question.
Thankfully, I quickly came to my senses and have made a concerted effort to steer clear of Brayden ever since. It hasn’t been easy, considering that my bestie is now dating his roommate and we’ve been thrown together for an accounting project. You’d think after years of baring my teeth at him like a rabid dog, the guy would have gotten the memo that I’m not interested.
Apparently not, since he’s spreading word around campus that we’re going out.
I mean, can you even imagine?
Me?
Dating Brayden Kendricks?
I have four words for him...
No.
Way.
In.
Hell.

Fake relationship, New Adult, Sports Romance.

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙💚❤️💜💖
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌎
Character development: ☺️🙃😳🥰
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The Hero: Brayden - he is a senior and a football player at Western University, with goals of making it big in the NFL draft in the spring. He has been named Campus Heartthrob for three years running, and last year he wasn’t even nominated, but still won. He had a big loss in his family before his freshman year and didn’t quite know how to handle it, so he used partying and women to fill the void in his life, but that has gotten old, and he now focuses on the game and his grades.

The heroine: Sydney - she is a senior and a soccer player at Western University. She is an accounting major, though she doesn’t know if that is really what she wants to do with her life. She likes her Art courses and currently needs to find a male body modal for one of her projects. She lost her brother four years ago and still misses him every day.

The Story: Brayden has been attracted to Sydney for years, but she is the one girl on campus who wants nothing to do with him. He doesn’t know why, but he would like to get to know her better, though he definitely doesn’t want a relationship. The two of them are doing a project together for one of their classes and they see each other now and then since their besties are dating each other.

Brayden has a stalker, a girl named Kira who will not leave him alone. She corners him at every party, shows up at his home, hanging with his roommates and the other cleat chasers, and most recently he found her naked in his bed despite repeatedly telling her he didn’t want her. Brayden ends up telling Kira that he is dating Sydney one night when Kira is especially pushy. So, Brayden talks Sydney into being his pretend girlfriend in exchange for him modeling for her project when nobody else has been willing.

I like the fake boyfriend trope as well as the new adult sports romance, and this one is par for the course for both of these tropes. Both of the main characters have losses in their pasts, so they find common ground quickly enough. I liked both characters, especially the fact that Sydney was also a division one athlete. Many times, in these tropes, it is the nerdy girl who gets the athlete, so I loved the fact that Sydney is also into sports. Their relationship grows slowly but there are plenty of steamy scenes all throughout.

This audiobook was told in dual points of view via dual narration. It was narrated by Michael Gallagher and Jennifer Blom. Jennifer Blom has a nice voice, it is soft and feminine, and sounds age appropriate, though something bothered me. I think she somehow sounded depressed. She wasn’t monotone, but still something about her voice just made me think of someone who is tired or depressed. Michael Gallagher has a nice gravelly voice which also sounded age appropriate for a new adult novel.

A while back I read a Jennifer Sucevic novel and promptly added her to my stalking list. And when I read the blurb for Campus Player, I added it to my ever-growing TBR. Then Campus Heartthrob was being promoted and I couldn't go passed the opportunity to read it.

It was exactly what I was craving. The whole fake relationship trope is really working for me at the moment. And college sports romance are right at the top of my must read list. This book was the perfect mix of both with a great amount of emotion and a great twist to keep us waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Brayden and Sydney had great chemistry and despite the fact that I haven't read Campus Player yet I loved that they had been dancing around each other for a while. I also enjoyed the fact that both characters had a lot of depth and their own lives and interests.

Add in an awesome epilogue that gives both our characters their own future dreams coming true that wrapped this up beautifully. The little Easter egg teasers through this book have me really excited for the next book. God, I need more reading time.

Campus Heartthrob started with a good promise. It has all the right ingredients for NA romance. Hero who is too confident and afraid of commitment and heroine who is vulnerable but strong. I was hoping for a good story from Miss Sucevic.

Sadly, the plot did not work well. It became too dragging and too dramatic for immature reason. The ending is also too quick and too abrupt. For someone who is well known for NA romance, Miss Sucevic certainly missing a lot of points.

At the end, with all of those disadvantages, I still enjoy this book OK.

The plot is similar to dozens of enemies to lovers college campus sports genre books that I've read.
Fake relationship worked here as both benefit from faking a relationship. A sensitive situation comes up just as they truly are falling that shatters their feelings. I liked the characters but story was just too predictable. If you don't read as much as I do then this is good story, well written.

Not quite enemies but not friends either. Brayden Kendricks and Sydney Daniels are only seen together if Demi (Sydney’s best friend/roommate) and Rowan (Brayden’s friend/roommate/sport teammate) are with them, or they’re at the same party. Or when they have to study together since they’re partners in a project for class. But when a situation arises that leads to Brayden asking Sydney to “date” him. She reluctantly expects, it’s not like it's real and anything will happen right?

The story of Campus Heartthrob not only focuses on Brayden and Sydney individually, when it comes to their overall lives of which involve sports, their studies, friends and family. But also them as a “couple”, when it comes to their interactions and the way they handle being “together”, considering their “relationship” is anything but smooth sailing. Seeing as there is a constant push and pull they do throughout the story. From all of this we see Brayden and Sydney’s layers being peeled back, giving us a further look into their characters. Mostly when it comes to their emotions and feelings. Something that is always expressed rigorously throughout, of which includes the mention of the personal losses they both have experienced. Intertwining them together, from the connection they feel with being able to empathise with each other.
This all resulted in Jennifer Sucevic giving us a deeper depth with getting to know them, especially since the narrative is told through both Brayden and Sydney’s perspectives. Altogether leading us on a bumpy journey that is anything but a breeze.

I have to admit I did feel the book had a tendency of being too wordy at times, making the pace of the story slower than necessary. Something I wasn't too keen on. I understand it was a slow burn, but honestly it felt more like it was an extra super slow burn. Lacking in the pace having a steady on going beat to it, considering there wasn’t as much excitement or drama as I would've liked, in order to help keep my focus throughout.

However with that said, Jennifer did end up managing to rein me back in with a Mind-Blowing, Surprising, OMG secret that I definitely didn’t expect or see coming. Safe to say after that I was tugged right back in, free falling from the shocking revelation. That ended up having me gripping on tighter than ever, devouring the rest until the very end.

Overall, Campus Heartthrob was a good read. I was happy to see Brayden and Sydney get their HEA.
I can’t wait for Elle and Carson’s story in Campus Hottie.

This is an easy read, with a bit of a twist thrown in for good measure.

Brayden is the campus god who attracts way too much attention. One fangirl in particular is making things uncomfortable for him. It doesn't matter how many times he tells her he isn't interested, she still stalks him. He needs to come up with something that will get through to this nutjob that he isn't available.

Sydney plays soccer for the university. She's an accounting major who's having second thoughts about her choice of study. Her real love-art. Only right now she's having a tough time finding a nude model for her assignment, the models are all booked by other students and Sydney is starting to panic.

Brayden has had his share of hook ups over the last 4 years, and he's content to keep things as they are for right now. He's confidant he has a shot at playing professional football and he doesn't want any messy relationship getting in the way. But...he has had his eye on Sydney since freshman year. She's made no secret that she has no interest in him-why that is is beyond him. Besides sharing an accounting class, her roommate is one of his team buddies, so they are constantly in each other's company.

He comes up with a plan to get rid of his bunny boiler by pretending Sydney is his girlfriend. It almost backfires, but when he throws in his willingness to step in as her much needed model, Sydney goes along with the ruse.

There's lots of slow burns, sizzling chemistry and some angst to hold your interest in this story. Although I'm not usually a lover of college romances-the older I get, the less interest I seem to have in all the drama and shenanigans that seem to surround college kids on the cusp of adulthood. But I enjoyed this one.

Both Brayden and Sydney are likeable characters, the readers is given both POV's and the characters have no hidden agendas. There are some aspects of the plot that I could see coming, but I still was invested in their story to keep reading.

I started skimming after about 15% in because I could tell this was going to be annoying. First hint: MC allows his stalker to dictate his life. He lies to her to get her off his back rather than simply telling her if she doesn’t stop he’s going to report her or get a protection order. Next, I hate the overprotective big brother that treats the sister like a vestal virgin whose virtue must be protected at all costs. His attitude towards his sister is annoying, not cute. Honestly, I don’t have time for annoying overly trite books. Then to make it worse, FMC is really annoying, particularly her decision to break up with the MC rather than simply tell him the truth about her brother being the drunk driver who killed his father. I hate when people try to avoid the conflict by lying rather than simply coming clean and seeing where the pieces fall. Skimmed the book quickly and moved on.
This book left me feeling disgruntled and annoyed.

Hiding the attraction!

Brayden Kendricks is a well known football player and has groupies that follow him around. When one starts to stalk him, Brayden knows he needs to stop her. When his team mate suggests he pretends to have a girlfriend, the first girl to pop into his head is Sydney Daniels. Whilst Brayden has been attracted to Sydney for a while, she has avoided him at all costs. When she agrees to help him out, will there be a thaw in the hostilities? Will his stalker finally take the hint?
I loved the chemistry between Brayden and Sydney and the way in which they interacted. As a new to me author I'm loving her work!

‘Campus Heartthrob’ is the second story in the ‘Campus’ series and the main characters are Brayden Kendricks and Sydney Daniels. Both are students at the Western university. Brayden is a football player and Sydney plays soccer. Both were secondary characters in the first book ‘Campus player‘. If you have read that book, it will not be a surprise that this is an enemies to lovers story. But if you haven’t read the first book, don’t worry, this story can be read as a standalone.

In the previous story it was very obvious that Sydney wasn’t a real ‘fan’ of Brayden. Although that didn’t stop Brayden from teasing Sydney every chance he got (which I loved). This is still the case when this story starts until the moment that they need each other for something important to them. First there’s Brayden ‘stalker’, a girl who has been following and cornering him every chance she gets. Brayden has made it clear that he isn’t interesting in her but the girl isn’t giving up. So he needs a ‘fake’ girlfriend and if there’s one girl he trust to play that role without expecting more of it, that girl is Sydney. Sydney isn’t happy with Brayden’s decision to involve her in his drama but he gives her little choice. Sydney has a big problem herself, she desperately needs a nude model for a project for her art class. So they make a deal, Sydney will play his fake girlfriend and Brayden will model nude for her. But by spending so much time together, they get to know each other better and begin to see each other in a different way. They also discover that they share things with each other. Both are athletic and very competitive when they play, they’re also very protective of their younger sibling and they both lost someone they cared about deeply. Slowly their feelings for each other change and their fake relationship turns into a real one. Everything is going very well until Sydney discovers something that will put their relationship to the test. Now, Brayden will have to decide if Sydney and their relationship is what he really wants in his life.

After reading and enjoying the first book in this series. I was looking forward to reading the next one. This story surprised me a few times, that doesn’t happen often. Normally I can guess where the story is going or what the ‘secret’ is but here the story made a few turns I didn’t see coming. I liked that! Brayden was the typical young football player who loved to party but he was also dedicated to football (he wanted to be a professional football player). Sydney was an independent, confident, energetic and intelligent girl. Sadly, she hadn’t had much luck in relationships. She could be fierce sometimes but she hide a big heart and cared deeply for her family and friends. Brayden supported Sydney in her decisions and because he was more easygoing, they were the perfect match.

You got both POV’s in the story. The banter between Sydney and Brayden was fun and the chemistry between them was hot. There were a few steamy sex scenes in the story. The fact that Brayden was a nude model for Sydney made for some interesting scenes in the story.
Although there were a few emotional scenes in the story too, it was nothing dark and I found it an easy to read story.

This story showed that a lot of times people wear masks, hiding their real self from the world, their pain, worries and sadness. Both Brayden and Sydney had lost a loved one. They dealt with it in their own way but it also formed a bond between them. Something they shared.

It was lovely to see Demi and Rowan again (the couple of the first book) and to see how their relationship was going. We met some of Brayden’s teammates who lived with him in the same house. One of them was Carson, his best friend from childhood. We also got to know Brayden’s little sister Elle, who’s also a student at Western. Sydney’s family was an interesting bunch, they were a bit loud and noisy but they really cared for each other. They were great characters.

I enjoyed this story. I will definitely read the next book in this series.

THE REVIEW FOR THE BOOK: Campus Heartthrob
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
AUTHOR: Jennifer Sucevic
TROPE: contemporary romance, sports romance, college romance, enemies to friends to lovers, fake dating
TYPE: Campus Series #2
POV: Dual POV
MY RATING: 4.5 Stars

This is the story of Brayden and Sydney who know each other through their best friends who are dating. There has always been a love hate relationship between the two of them. Sydney thinks that Brayden is a notorious player and wants nothing to do with him. When Brayden tries to distance himself from another girl on campus who can’t seem to take no for an answer, her ropes Sydney into being his fake girlfriend.

I’m a huge fan of Jennifer’s work. I’ve read probably everything this she wrote. I really enjoyed the first book in the Campus series so I was excited to read Brayden and Sydney’s story. The fake dating aspect of this story was hilarious. Even the way that Sydney finds out that they’re fake dating was hilarious. The chemistry between the two characters was intense. I loved the way they connected through their shared trauma. To be honest, when the author drops that bomb of a surprise towards the end…I did not see that coming. I wish the ending would have been drawn out a little bit more but overall, I was happy with the book.

This is a great college romance story. If you love the fake dating trope, then you’re in for a real treat with this book.

I was provided an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

Brayden has always felt an attraction towards Sydney but since she can't stand him and football is his main focus he doesn't bother acting on it. Even if he is spending more time with her since their best friends are now dating. But when a girl won't leave Brayden alone and is a stage five clinger he tells her he has a girlfriend. When the girl calls his bluff he blurts out Sydney's name. Now he just needs to convince Sydney. Sydney will agree to this terrible idea of temporarily fake dating as long as Brayden helps her with her art project. We all know what happens when two people attempt to fake date - real feelings happen.

I loved Brayden and Sydney together and individually. I really loved them both. I loved how Brayden went through his issues and came out of it better and stronger. I loved how strong and feisty Sydney was. I loved how they both fought their feelings for each other but didn't shy away from them once they both admitted that they fell into all the feelings. I loved how sweet and perfect Brayden was. I loved how perfect these two were for and with each other. While I saw the conflict coming a mile away it was still such a gut punch. My heart broke for both of them but it was put back together in the best way. I loved how the resolution played out. I kinda really just loved everything about this book.

Sometimes you need a pallet cleanser between book genres. I thought this could be mine. Nope. It just made me mad that I spent .5 Audible credits on it.

The premise was mediocre:
Boy has aggressive stalker. Boy pretends allusive, hot girl is girlfriend to keep stalker at bay. Allusive, hot girl talks with aggressive stalker who IMMEDIATELY BACKS DOWN FROM STALKING.

Story done.

Or so you think. (Keep in mind the art project is sooooooo important until it’s not).

Anyhoo, both have lost someone in a tragic event.

Spoiler Alert:

It’s allusive, hot girl’s brother who kills boy’s dad in a drunk driving accident. Awful. Terrible.

Allusive, hot girl decides to keep the revelation to herself and tells boy that they are not going to work out after he tells her the night before he loves her. Bro. Rough. Poor timing.

Anyhoo, fluff filler until the end where they end up together.

I understand writing books is not easy. This is only my opinion but some people love the story……so…..

This is the first book I've read by Jennifer Sucevic and lemme tell you... I was NOT disappointed! From the very first page, I was hooked, and I stayed that way until the end. The tension, push/pull, and chemistry between Brayden and Sydney was EVERYTHING, y'all!

To sum it up (and to keep this review spoiler-free) if you're looking for the following, then get your one-click on!
— Enemies-to-lovers
— New Adult Romance
— Layered and fleshed out characters
— Flawless writing
— Solid/Engaging Plot (Talk about a page-turner!)
— Steamy parts (:fans self:)
— Can be read as a standalone (I haven't read book 1 of this series yet but had zero problems keeping up with the secondary characters)
— HEA (epilogue included)

I can not believe that this is my first book by this author. I fell into the story from the very first page I could not put my kindle down till the very end.

Everything about this story was amazing. From the way she disliked him to the way they fell in love. What they fail to see was how their pasts were intertwined and it almost broke them. But they managed to work out a way to have HEA and they left me with a full heart because they deserved all the happiness.

I'm definitely coming back to this author because as said this was such a great read and I can't wait to see what happens next.

College, fake Romance, sports romance
Future NFL player Braydon, is the Campus Heartthrob. It’s a real thing. He won 3 years in a row! With all the notoriety, comes unwanted attentions.
Sydney is a soccer player. She finds Brandon insufferable. She had disliked him since freshman year when he unknowingly crushed her feelings. Now he has pulled her into the middle of his situation by telling people they are dating.
This enemies to lovers story is as easy highly likable characters. There is chemistry and fun banter along with a good twist.
A great epilogue wrapped it all up.

The heroine was an annoying byatch and this book had to have been written by an angsty pre-teen. The rating for this book seem quite off bc there was no reason this book could ever garner such a high rating when stalker girl was being treated with kid gloves. So odd and definitely won’t be reading any more of this author’s writing. Sidney sucks! Hoping Brayden found someone else worthy of him.

Brayden Kendricks had a problem in the form of a fan turned stalker. Kira got it in her head during her freshman year last year that she was in love with him. Except they had never even been together in any way. Now it wasn't like he hadn’t tried to let her down easy saying that there was nothing between them and never would be so if she could stop following him around. Then again, she would show up at a party and follow him around. His best friend since grade school, Carson Roberts always tries to give him a heads-up when she's around.

He may tease the heck out of him but he had Brayden’s back. Carson was a brother from a different mother. He was there for him on one of the darkest days of his life and helped pull him through it. They had bonded over football. From their first team together being flag football, to a middle school team, high school, and now college. Like him, Carson will enter the draft in the spring. He’s one of the best tight ends in the conference and was an All-American last year. The guy is one smart motherf---er.

On this day he’s checking out the grocery situation. Everyone is supposed to do it but if he waited nothing would get done. When Carson walked into the kitchen he told Brayden I hate to tell you this but Kira’s here. He tells him you have to cause a diversion. How? Anything just pull her attention he needed to get upstairs he had a ton of homework. So Carson heads out and figures out she’s nowhere on the first floor. Relieved Brayden heads upstairs. Flings open the door to find Kira naked on his bed preparing herself if you catch my drift.

Let's just say the football house him roar, for her to get dressed and get out. Kira does get dressed says she’s sorry and leaves but not before Asher says, “Maybe you should give her a chance.” The look of hope is unsettling and puts his sitter in her place, and says, Sorry I can’t. I have a girlfriend. The teary-eyed doe morphs into a super villain with her hands on her hips, “Since when, and who is she?” We have been keeping it on the down low. “Who?” “Sh--! I think his head is going to spin.” Sydney Daniels. As soon as her name slips out he knows he’s in massive trouble.

You see Brayden has been on Sydney’s most hated hit list since freshman year. And he had no idea why. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see all the guys and their lady guests' heads whip toward him at that bold statement. Kira then states she’s going to have to talk to her about taking another woman’s man. And promptly stomps out of the house.
