The Beast of Moscow

Rate this book
Tucked away deep in the hills of Dubna lives a man hiding from a past that’s as grisly as the scar on his face. Reclusive. Paranoid. Violent. His trek to the top has been a bloody game—with a deadly end for anyone who loses.

And it’s not over yet.

Vera Avdonin stumbled into the life of Vaslav Pashkov entirely by accident, and it should have stopped there, too. Just a broken ballerina who helped a beautifully tortured stranger.

But she’ll soon learn that like the mafiya he controls, once he brings you in, there is no way out.

They don’t call him The Beast of Moscow for nothing.

*

The Beast of Moscow is a slow burn, contemporary romance saga told over the course of several parts and encompassing more than one generation from start to finish. Only part of this is a love story; everything else hurts. TBOM—taking readers from Moscow to Paris while peeling back the beginning layers of Vaslav Pashkov—is part one.

Same review for the three books in this story pubbed so far.

I have loved so, so many of this author's books and her most powerful successes have been those stories that are done in one book, two at most. This story could have been up there at the top, but because it has been stretched across four books it's definitely lost it's oomph and instead is just going round in circles.

Will I read the final book? Hmmm the jury is still out on that one 🤷

5 “The Beginning Begins” Stars

I love this author’s storytelling. She always sets the story. There is a full evolvement of her characters that makes you feel them inside and out. Vera and Vas are both broken individuals in their own right. Both hiding respectively in their owned worlds. Vera the former ballerina who is missing part of herself and Vas, the crime boss, the Beast of Moscow, who’s hiding his very major health concerns. Their dynamics and encounters are methodical but there is so much more that we have yet to discover. The ending was very enticing!! All I can say is that I’m in……..I can’t wait for more Vas and Vera and discover their volatile and emotional journey. It know it will be rough, raw and brutal and I can’t wait for every minute of it.

Grumpy Hero, he has migraines and health issues which make him mean and difficult to deal with.
The heroine is the granddaughter of Antoniv from The Russian Guns series.
Dual POV.
The Hero's wife was murdered. He was 'seeing' an escort but not for over a year.
It's been a while for the heroine to be involved with anyone too.

It's very detailed, has a warning for violence.
The relationship has been described as slow burn, it's almost non existent for a while.
Cliffhanger ending.
Trilogy.

Okay yeah, seems like anyone can publish organized crime these days-super alpha ruthless monsters, but there’s no GOAT like Bethany Kris. Reading her work is truly a gift-I’m shattered by the ending btw-locked in and ready for more, and if I could hurl more stars at this beginning book I would.
I’m always in awe at this author’s sophistication while writing-she has this vibe about her that she just researched and can just paint the culture with such finesse that it leaves absolutely no question to the character’s surroundings. Vas and Vera were two characters that paired together so extremely well-their chemistry was insane, and I LOVED how dark this author went. She wrote with no reservations and it just completely showed. I’m excited for book 2 because now I literally have no clue where we’re headed!

I enjoy this authors stories, she has a hand on the pulse of mafia reads and this one is such a unique read. I was spellbound by the characters, the lives, the world, and the action. There is so much packed into this book that the pages fly by.

Vaslav is the boss of the Bratva (Russian mafia) and he has a unique (yet total relatable) chronic illness; he suffers from extreme migraine and there are times when he even has seizures. What makes this a unique aspect in a mafia boss is that the pain the comes with these migraine makes Vaslav violent, aggressive, mean and at times extremely dangerous. This adds to the quality and scariness of the story. This is a bit darker than the author normal writes but it needed to be with Vaslav being who he is. He is not a redeemable character, at least not yet and many people will dislike him.

The story line is complicated, it covers a lot of time and a lot of characters and makes this a very in depth and complicated story. It does end in a cliffhanger, in the middle of something grand. There is a lot of violence, action and hurt. There is no other woman drama and no cheating.

My main issue with this story is that I could not connect, nor did I care for any of the characters. The story is there, the characters, the world building, everything I just have no feelings one way or the other and that bums me out. I love to connect and become a part of the story.

This is an interesting and unique read and I think it is going to be a hit for many readers. I suggest you grab a copy and decide for yourself.

I had mixed feelings about this story but, in the end, I ended up loving it. The characters were so awesome, it was hard to not love them. I will say though as much as I love reading Bethany Kris's stories as she is one of my top favorites I am getting tired of all the cliffhangers because I hate them so much and because this story had me so intrigued I did not want to put it down. I loved that without even knowing why, this couple had gravitated toward one another and saw something in one another that others had missed, and that it was the one thing that made that person intriguing for one another. A mystery to solve... Vera instantly knew she liked the brooding, dangerous man even without knowing him. Vera was a sweetheart and for a woman who grew up in such a dangerous world, there was still something still untouched and innocent about her, meaning her emotions and outlook on life. I loved that about her the most.

Vaslav- It was hard not to find the brooding and dangerous man exciting even though he was downright scary and dangerous yet, sinful in all the ways that count in a panty-melting way.

My take on things is if anyone can get beneath that armor that Vaslav wears it would be Vera just by being herself because there is no pretending with her, she is feisty and brave and independent, and she will not be a doormat for no man she may crave the dominance in the bedroom but, she will not have it out of it. She has lived with men her whole life as dangerous as Vaslav and is not afraid of the man, and she should be. This man is deadly! Vaslav is a big a-hole in every way and arrogant and cold and calculating but, you can't help but, be attracted to the man and his dark brooding looks knowing he would be sinful and bed and give you everything you crave but, are the risks worth it to you and your heart?

Can't wait to see if Vera caves, or will she give the beast a run for his money? Our belief is, that she needs to win that cold and calculated heart of his before anything else to have some bargaining power to tame the beast. What of her family? Now things are about to get complicated and heat up next time around as Vera is a very treasured mafia princess after all coming from a very powerful family in their own right and is loved by all, it will be interesting, to say the least, what happens next!

I....Have words to say about this book but NONE of them are good

First I had SUCH a hard time even getting through this book because from the start I really didn't care about these characters. Vera a little more than Vas but not much.

She cried about everything and the author was trying to hard to get me to like her and I didn't respond well to that. It felt forced

Then we get to Vas. Please forgive me but I want to repeatedly punch him in the face. He was RUDE, he was aggressive, he was a bully and he had no redeeming qualities to speak of. At ALL.

He would make Vera cry then just not care about it. How am I supposed to believe he cares about her? I absolutely DONT.

The further I got into the book the more he just aggravated me and I wanted to scream.

I hate selfish people who use others in such manipulative ways. I don't care about this man and I don't want a happy ending. I just didn't like him from the first page to the last and I don't care to read more.

Usually I LOVE Bethany's books and I'm just so let down by this. The Beast of Moscow? More like the "Giant asswipe who needs his face smacked of Moscow"

Ugh, I hate cliffhangers! And this one leaves you right in the middle of something good. I really like this author. She always churns out interesting stories. This one is a little bit different and I loved it. Vaslav is a Russian mafia boss who suffers from terrible migraines, even seizures. He sees something in Vera with her mafioso father and broken ballerina past.

I’m loving the whole concept of this book - Vas has such a great backstory. You never really know whether it’s the pain talking or Vas himself. He’s a mean hero, says nasty cutting things. But is this all part of the terrible physical pain that controls him? What’s up with Vas’ medical condition? How will this affect him, his business, Vera? He’s a true psychopath - darker than BK usually writes and I’m sold. There’s no redemption for him in this book. I’m dying to find out what happens next.

Arc review. No cheating or O/W drama.

I can't believe I'm saying this because BK is one of my absolute favorite authors, but...

This book just wasn't working for me. I couldn't get into it. Which sucks because about 99% of her books get 5 stars from me so this is obviously not normal.

Ok I’m gonna start specifying bc marking things as just 4 or 5 stars is just so vague ok so for this book it had a promising start and yes it’s the first in a trilogy but likeeee a lot of things were unanswered. Also they hardly even had many moments in this book and Vera was just… like a pushover idk this was just a 4 star read and then it went down to 3 cause he just sprung that collateral shit out of no where I mean NO. WHERE. Like ok. But then I remembered chapters 24 and 25 so +.5

From Bethany-Kris’s addictive world building to the complex flawless characters. I always get sucked into her stories. BK always puts a unique spin and flair to her writing that just amazes me.

The Beast of Moscow was brutal, ruthless and bloody brilliant! Vaslav Pashkov is one of the most powerful powerful criminals in Russia’s deep underground. He is a very dangerous man who has built an empire based on power and will do anything and everything to keep it that way. But he also suffers migraine’s that have developed into several other complications. If word gets out to his enemies that he is weak it could make him an easy target. It’s kill or be killed. No turning corners.

Vera Avdonin was once a shining ballerina with a bright future ahead of her, due to an accident. She comes to Vaslav’s aid and her fate is forever sealed, Vera Avdonin is his. The passion, chemistry was undeniable but what is to come…. The dangers they face..no one is safe.

The future for them looks dark and bleak, and I can’t wait for the angst and grit BK always brings to the table.

I will preface this by saying that it's been awhile, but I have read other books by Bethany-Kris and have enjoyed her stories and her writing.

However I do not know what happened here. Straightaway the writing in the third person was hard to follow. It's very muddy, didn't flow and was difficult to get through. The dialogue between characters was the only natural thing about the writing.

Because of the tone that the writing set this was very impersonal, dry and cold. It's also painstakingly slow. As a result, I could not connect to the characters or invest in them.

I did like Vera more as the story progressed. And I get it, Vas is an a-hole, the title alludes to the fact that he is no Prince Charming. I have no gripes with the cruelty in his character. He's actually set up as a pretty good anti-hero and his growing health issues are an intriguing aspect to him. There's definitely more to him and more going on with him in terms of his intentions than what we've seen so far. I can see the potential in this storyline.

But I really have no interest in going further with it. I was quite disappointed in the overall story development. If I hadn't read this as a buddy read with my book babe Lizzy, I wonder if I would've gotten through it.

Better luck next time.

This book... Amazing from start to finish.
Vas is such a complex character. He's cruel with no remorse. Honest to the point that his words cut, and he doesn't think twice about the blood that leaks from the wound he's made. His life has been one of pain and brutality and he has no problem unleashing that on it. And I loved him for it. His harshness, the way he lived up to people calling him the beast, not to prove something, but because life had made him one and he embraced it. I loved that he was a man of utter control, controlling things around him and his self-control, but that the thing that caused him the most pain, he couldn't control, couldn't fix.
Vera held her own in this story, which was hard against a man like Vas. She'd gone to Russia to pursue her dream and when things came crashing down, she took that dream and turned it into a way to help others. She understood Vas in ways that surprised even him, maybe because, even without so much cruelty in her life, she knew what it was to have pain, loss, and hardship, and the way it shaped you, changed you.
Although there wasn't a lot of action, what action there was had me grinning because listen, I love when people get what's coming to them. But I didn't miss the action because it always felt like there was suspense around damn near everything surrounding Vas. How he got to be where he was left me wondering if someone was waiting in the wings to take what he had in the same fashion. And always, always Vas seemed ready to explode at any moment and I was on pins and needles during his interactions with people, knowing if they said or did the wrong thing, he would show them exactly why people feared him.
The ending took me by utter surprise, like eyes widening, face getting closer to the screen surprise, so needless to say, I can't wait for the next book.
Because I need answers, about Vas' past, about Vera's future, about ALL OF IT!

Vera and Vas were both hiding for their own reasons, Vera is trying to find herself again.
While Vas is trying to keep his health issues quiet, when he meets Vera, he knows there’s something there.
Vas’ life has always been about pain and how brutal he is, he’s the beast. Although Vera is a ballerina just because her world has changed, she wants to help others including Vas.
The complex mafia boss and the ballerina have undeniable chemistry, and both are damaged. You learn all about them, about the pain and pasts they both have. Vas is used to getting what he wants, and people not saying no to him, but his ballerina isn’t as agreeable as everyone else.

First let me say, I wasn't sure about the story, it's different from Bethany-Kris's other books, darker and harsh. I didn't put the book down, once I started. I needed to see what direction it was going. Bethany-Kris didn't disappoint (I knew she wouldn't), it was mind-blowing to say the least. This is a story of a Russian man, who can only be described as brutal, merciless, callous, and ruthless. Vaslav Pashkov is known as the Beast of Moscow and he controls the mafiya. She is a beautiful broken ballerina who by happenstance helps him one night and their story begins. She also has an influential story of her own, which I had forgotten about. I can't say enough about how unbelievable and spectacular this series is going to be. I can't wait for the next book. Once again Bethany-Kris has written an amazing story!

The way that this author crafts a story is truly sublime. She is one of the best when it comes to mafia romance. This book had all the grit, suspense, and mystery that I love in mafia.

I'm eager to learn what happens next with Vas, Vera, and even Igor.

Vas and Vera are a odd couple. There is mystery behind it all. This will interesting read to get into.

Vas is just crazy, with a dark element to him. I can't get a good feel from him. I decide if I like him or not.

I am obsessed with everything about The Beast of Moscow by Bethany-Kris. A Russian Mafia Boss with a complex and health problems and a broken ballerina mentally and physically.
OMG, their smashing, sizzling and burning chemistry! You are held captive by the unfolding tension between Vaslav and Vera.

Vaslav ~ head of the Russian mafia ~ Aloof ~ Standoffish, ~ Brutal ~ Ruthless ~Unforgiving, Trust no one and In need of a wife.
Vere ~ Daughter of a New York crime boss~ A ballerina with no future in competitive or professional dancing ~ Plagued with insecurities and is Hopelessly attracted to Vaslav, a man 20 years her senior.

From the first chapter in this book, I fell in love with Vas. He's an A'hole, and rightfully so. The man has had a hard life, living in a kill or be killed world. Vas has to be ruthless, merciless, cold-hearted and without any vulnerabilities for his enemies to play on. However, he is plagued by migraines and now seizures. For the kind of life Vaslav has lived, there is no redemption.

Vera held her own against Vas. Vera left the US at 16 to pursue her dream of being a well-renowned ballerina, but this was crush after a few years. Vera's unfortunate encounter with Vaslav made an impression and captured his attention. (TOO CARING🤷‍♀️) Vera's ability to read and relate to a complex man like Vaslav put her in a peculiar position.

I knew I was going to enjoy this story. Vas and Vera are two damaged souls who have isolated themselves from the world. The build-up of tension and attraction flowed nicely, and the characters are so freaking relatable. As expected with books written by Bethany-Kris, you get a great backstory, and everything unfolds well. Every mafia romance book I have read by Bethany-Kris has left me reaching for another one of her books because her writing is that good.
Vas prides himself on how controlled he is, but I'm sure in book 2, Vera will shatter his carefully controlled and regulated emotions. I had a smirk on my face at the end of this story. Vaslav made a comment, but things are not going to go the way he plans😁.

Vaslav~
"Oh, don't worry. That woman will come willingly."
I don't think this will be the case. Vera will make him work for it as she is fully aware that Vas is using her.

I can't wait for the second part in The Beast of Moscow because THE FREAKING PLOT THICKENS.

I held off reading The Beast of Moscow but I was finally drawn to picking it up for a buddy read. So pleased I did as the reasons I hesitated were not a problem for me.

While I found the beginning of the story a bit hard to get into until Vas and Vera appeared on the same page. From that moment on, my interest piqued and I knew I would be checking out the next book in this series.

This is the first of four books and it definitely leaves you in a ‘to be continued’ state.

I had such high hopes for the book, I love a good Russian romance... But this is basically nothing.. It doesn't even feel like the same author that writes so many great mafia romances wrote this story... 226 pages of nothing happening.... I wish I could get my money back

"Monsters aren't born, comrade." Look at me. "They're made."

I was a newbie to the Russian Guns world by BK until very recently, when I read The Darkest Lies trilogy, as I've never been a huge fan of Russian Bratva romances. However, when reading DL, there were a few mentions of Vera that had me intrigued to find out more about her.

Vera's character is generally quite stereotypical for the 'ex-ballerina' lead character. She's broken after her dream literally shattered before her own eyes, far too soon. And whilst she believes she's moved on, the old hurt is still there, continually reminding her of what she lost. You'll never fix it if everyone lets you pretend it's not even there to begin with." She's kind hearted and isn't afraid to speak her mind when she feels she needs to. Given she's a mafiya boss' daughter living in a completely separate country to her parents, she has more independence than others in her position would usually receive and is allowed to live relatively freely more or less.

Given that relation though, I did think she seemed a little too naive about the kind of man Vas might be, once she finds out his line of business. I would have thought that somebody who had grown up in a similar world would maybe be a bit more cautious in some of their dealings. But barring the fact that she decided she'd go on an away trip with a man who she'd been warned off of and only met like twice, I generally quite liked her character. It will be interesting to see how she comes to forgive Vas, as she seems like someone who would take no shit, but has allowed Vas to treat her poorly now on a number of occasions.

"Find your cream, kisska. And make sure you lap up every damn drop. Like a good kitten would do."

Vas's character is definitely an anti-hero. He's rude and pushy and definitely doesn't like when someone doesn't do as he tells them or makes him repeat himself. "Or that was what he barked at me when I asked. I am not in the business of asking my boss to repeat himself, frankly." Although he was exceptionally cold at points, I did kind of like that aspect of his character as it made him more realistic given his position. And I honestly did find him quite funny at points, with his grumpy old man attitude. "Right, well, you can tell my damn dog I'll be home tomorrow." It was also kinda cute that the few times Vera felt insecure about his feelings towards her, he reassured her, albeit bluntly, that he very much wanted what she was offering.

His medical condition was something quite unusual for me. I feel like it's not often you see characters like his suffer from something like that, or if they do, they're always just able to magically work through it. But I really liked that we got so much of Vas' POV when he was getting his migraines and that we saw the foggy confusion clouding over his thoughts, or the references to the bright light setting him off. I could fully imagine his disorientated character during those scenes and it's going to be interesting to see how he allows the situation to develop, given he's so adamant about not getting help.

This was a very slow burn story, which we were told it would be, but I wasn't quite expecting it to go as slow as it did. Especially given Vera doesn't appear too bothered about taking things slowly. However, there was chemistry between the two and I liked getting to see the rest of the story play out alongside. I think these two are going to have a very complex journey, and I'm looking forward to the angst that always comes with a BK book. I am hoping that I will be more drawn to the characters though as at the minute, whilst I like them, I'm not 100% invested in their relationship. Also looking forward to seeing where the cliff-hanger picks back up, given Vas' arrogant confidence regarding the matter, and Vera's initial reaction. And I can't wait to see more of Igor as I love his character, he was definitely an amusing not-so-little side-kick, with a lot to say. "Apparently, you've been worried about him." He flipped his hands up as if to say no offense. "You did ask about him, I'm only saying."

"Some called him a king; others said he was a beast. Neither meant he was beloved."

The Beast of Moscow is the newest Bratva book from Bethany Kris. I loved The Russian Guns series, and I'm so excited she's expanding on this world! Vaslav Pashkov is the most violent criminal boss in Russia's underworld, but he's hiding a huge secret. He is callous and unyielding in his rule, a fact that even his closest friends can't escape. To get to the top was a bloody and painful path, and to stay there will require much of the same. As powerful as Vas is, he's just as lonely. With a life that was devoid of love, full of loss and suffering, Vas is awkward in pursuing Vera, crossing fine lines between his attraction to her and taking care of his own business. He has so many things up his sleeve, and I can't wait to see him unravel his plans.

Vera Avdonin is originally from New York, a part of the infamous Avdonin criminal family. She's no stranger to important, strong, and dangerous men and she can't help but be drawn to Vas. After living in Russia and studying ballet, Vera is now giving ballet lessons to underprivileged kids in the city. She's beautiful, smart, asks the right questions, and not afraid of the grouchy facade Vas puts on. Honestly, she's very unassuming, and she doesn't cause trouble for her family like her younger brother Roman does. She's perceptive, resilient, discrete in her knowledge of Vas' secrets.Through her interactions with Vas, there is a side to Vera I'm just dying to see. Their relationship will certainly be explosive, because she stands up to him, asks hard questions, and is not afraid of his power or his looks. She finds him intriguing, and that makes her intriguing, because what does this dainty ballerina have in common with a cruel criminal?

An age gap dark romance, a beauty and a beast waiting to see what would come about of the proposition at the end of book 1, I'm anxious to see where the next book leads!

Alexi seems like a good guy, I hope nothing happens to him for revealing the beast!

Captivating! This author creates stunning heroes and antiheroes but this beast creation is beyond anything she's giving us so far. Cruel doesn't even cover it. Vaslav is a brutal beast with tons of venom and coldness. Maybe he has his reasons but some of his harshness toward the lovely ballerina Vera was so heartless. I was crushed right along with her while Vas was spewing his cruel words and vileness. But she not a pushover. Vera is used to men like him having grown up in the Bravta world. Even if the Russians are a different bred from her NYC family it's close enough that she knows what's going on and handles it better than an average woman. I loved when she spat back at him. This first story deals with the backstories of Vera and Vaslav. Vera with her life after a fateful accident that ends her dancing days. She's down but not out. And Vas as he struggles with his illness and his deteriorating condition. Also, his horrible childhood and painful past. So sad! Yeah, he's the beast for a reason. This picture of a man isolated because of his status and his need for privacy is stunning. A weakness could end his life and everything he's fought for. I got the feeling that at any moment a causal incident could take him down. What a way to live his life. He doesn't let anyone in. So why Vera? Well, it's not only attraction even though that turns scorching hot. I was melting when Vas turns all alpha on Vera and she was a submissive kitten. Hotness aside....mostly she's useful. The revelation at the end was mind blowing. I can only imagine how Vera's father is going to react. I can't wait for that explosion. This is a stellar addition to this fabulous author's outstanding collection of mafia romances. Dark, dirty and sensual. Loads danger and intrigue along with a passionate couple in this must read page turner. Bring on the next installment!

Can we take a moment to appreciate the gorgeous cover! Honestly beautiful.

So, I have to come clean and confess that I haven't read The Russian Guns but I did read the first book from The Darkest Lies (still on my tbr!) so i know about Demyan, Roman, and, of course, Vera.

I pretty much enjoyed this - I like that we come to know them so I expect that I wouldn't connect with them right away, BUT I DID connect with the story, it caught me, so that's why I'm excited for the next releases ;)

The slow burn was good - I would love to have more sexual tension but it was fine, I still enjoy what we had.

These characters are flawed, there wasn’t much of “romance” in the book - again I didn’t mind because I came to know them first. There is, of course, this “I want you” lust thingy but both are not in the stage of “I want you” because they feel love.

I enjoyed Vas and Vera.
Vas was ruthless, rude, grade A 🍑 hole, and possessive. I also have migraines, though they used to be real bad before, but they weren’t in the level Vas had to endure so I know they make you do your worst. Still, it stung how he treated Vera because he knew he hurt her and still wouldn’t apologise even though he knew she was hurting.

Vera was a character with a past that still haunted her. Vas, rudely and in the worst way possible, point that out. I still can’t define her though - She wasn’t meek or anything like that but sometimes I feel that she would let Vas do as he pleases. Still, I like her because she was funny.
“Don’t put his contact name as his real name. Give it a nickname, if you want.
So she had - Funny Man” lol only Vera.

There isn’t much to say about their relationship yet! I’m curious how they will work out.

A great read!

The only words that come to mind is: crazy, beautiful, and did I just read that. The main character Vas, is as crazy as they come. I mean, who kills one of their good friends without a second thought? The book starts slow but does build up towards the middle. It is a classic Beauty and the Beast plot, however Vas is nothing like the Beast. This makes him a very rich and well-written character. I liked him because he honesty didn't care, which is how I think a good mafia boss is suppose to act. We do get to see the caring side to him, but it doesn't take away from who he truly is. Basically, he stays true to himself throughout the entire book. There are times he is brutally mean and rude to the Vera(female protagonist), but to be honest she deserved it. All in all, Vas made this story come alive and I can't wait to read the second book.
As for Vera, she is okay. It was good at times to see her move from being the perfect ballerina in search of a purpose for her life to a person with flaws. The cigarette scene was great, because we got to see another side of her. Him taking her to Paris was the best thing because you do see her character come to life. She bored me at the beginning of the book.
If you like funny brutal characters that make you go back and read a scene twice, I recommend this book for you. ( I also liked the dog, Marrow. I hope we see more of him in the sequel.)
