THE LIES HE TOLD is a cozy crime novel by Valerie Keogh.

A crime of passion. One cheating man. Four angry women.

Toby had been living with his girlfriend, Misty, a bestselling author, at her house for the last three months. Then out of the blue he tells her he doesn’t love her anymore, and is leaving. Misty with her approaching deadlines, long hours and time apart, had thought he understood the requirements and demands of her job. They had met at a publicity affair and five weeks later he moved in with her. So now Misty is single and alone again. Her sisters are happy that they had broken up. Misty and Toby had been happy together…her money …and his style.

Babs, a physiotherapist and Toby’s ex-girlfriend of six months, shows up at Misty’s and assaulted her after the love of her life had been lured away by Misty. Toby had told Misty that Babs is “emotionally fragile”.

Then another woman, Gwen, a wealthy owner of an art gallery, shows up at Misty’s, looking for Toby, who never showed up at her place. Gwen had known him for two weeks. Toby told Gwen he was living with his sister, so spent his days with Gwen, while she was writing and returned back to Misty in the evenings.

All three women brought in a good salary.

Toby was charismatic, sexy…but a taker …a con artist who liked to live the rich life on other people’s money.

But then Toby’s wife, Dee reported him missing. They had been separated for the last year but still stayed in daily contact.

Toby had lied to all the women in his life.

One thing is for certain, the consequences of lying will be murder…

This well-written novel is packed with lots of twists and turns, with a brilliant ending.

Many thanks to the author and Bloodhound Books for my digital copy.

➡️ One cheating man, four angry women.

➡️ WHAT WORKED
The premise boasted a juicy, classic revenge thriller setup that promised a fast-paced, high-stakes game of cat and mouse.

➡️ WHAT DIDN'T WORK
🔷 The Length: The book was waaay too long. What should have been a tight, breakneck thriller ended up dragging in the middle, filling time with repetitive internal monologues rather than driving the plot forward.

This 7-hour audiobook easily could have been a 5-hour audiobook.

🔷 The Final Chapters: After a very, very, very, very long buildup, the final resolution felt rushed and required a heavy suspension of disbelief.

I listened to the audiobook, expertly narrated by Clare Corbett. Although Clare Corbett's performance was 5-star, the book could have used additional narrators.

➡️ Author Valerie Keogh is a prolific writer (32 books!).
Although this was not one of my Valerie Keogh besties, I am a fan and will eagerly be awaiting the author's future releases.

Keogh delivers another page-turning thriller that did not disappoint. There’s a plethora of angry women in the mix as the man in the middle, an epic love rat, has disappeared. Each of the women have a motive; who was involved?

You have the wife; the first lover; the writer second lover; the art gallery owner as woman number three. You would think that Toby would need a checklist to keep track of them all! As he moves on, it becomes clear why Toby is attracted to the next conquest. Each woman is incredibly different but each woman has one thing in common: they cannot resist the ‘Toby Charm’. It is like a spell and, when it becomes clear that Toby has gone missing, you cannot help but suspect these spurned women who realise they were not the centre of Toby’s universe.

Keogh turns Misty, relationship number three, into the main character. I thought this was interesting, especially because Misty is a writer! I really hope that Keogh has created her character based on fact because it seemed like a vivid insight into the life of an author. Fascinating! She is quite a likeable character and I could believe in her paranoia after she feels she cannot fully remember the events after Toby declared he was leaving her. Whilst I was hoping for some epic revelations from Misty, I was also wanting her to remain innocent in this disappearance.

I thought that the other females were stereotypes of spurned women involved in a love square. The wife, for instance, is portrayed as rather grey and dowdy. Lacking excitement, Keogh makes it clear that this is why Toby felt he could not remain loyal. However, I thought the way that Toby bounced across partners was a bit too predictable. Furthermore, I thought the plot development more obvious than I wanted. There were a few surprises, particularly with Gwen’s character, but this was not as heart-stopping as previous Keogh novels I have read.

Undoubtedly, Keogh knows how to write a good page-turner. I think I was a bit disappointed with this one because some of the clues were too obvious. Unlike other books, I did not find myself gasping in disbelief. Intrigued with how the story would unfold, I don’t think there were as many fireworks in this story of cheating and dishonesty.

If you have not yet read any of Keogh’s books, then this blog has many reviews! This most recent offering is a short-ish suspense read so, if you feel like you are short on time but want to sample this author, this book is definitely one to consider.

With thanks to Bloodhound books for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I have found this past month a bit of a struggle with reading as lately I have either been too busy to read or I am finding it harder for books to keep my attention. This book though was an amazing read and one of the better thrillers I have read certainly this week as read a couple for book tours. This book starts with our writer Misty who makes her wealth writing thrillers and one day, out of the blue her boyfriend Toby tells her he is leaving her and doesn't love her anymore. Just like that. He leaves and she never sees him again. The next thing she knows, she gets a knock on the door - a female named Gwen who is his new girlfriend says Toby didn't show up. Misty discovers that just like she was caught blindsided and the girlfriend Babs before Misty, Gwen has been too. Then imagine my surprise when we get a fourth female who turns out to be Toby's wife of twenty years. We learn as the book goes on that Toby loved to live an extravagant lifestyle and infidelity was his middle name as the lies, he told all four females start to unravel. When there starts to be no sign of Toby, we assume then he is dead and one of the four killed him, or did more than one of them play a role in his disappearance? The last few chapters of this book end up being a very twisty read and had a Murder on the Orient Express feel to it, you know those twists that Agatha Christie was famous for with all the characters ultimately playing a part in the demise/fall of the victim which I think was the clincher for me as I love these types of stories. Overall, if you are in the mood for a great thriller to set your night on edge, then I recommend you check out The Lies He Told by Valerie Keogh as it was also a gritty read and fast-paced.

Another great book from Valerie Keogh.
The story is told from the perspectives of four women, all linked to one man, Toby.
We initially find out that Toby is leaving Misty as he doesn’t love her any more.
We then learn that he’s leaving her to move in with Gwen, but doesn’t arrive when he’s meant to.
Toby is reported missing by his wife, Dee who has put up with his unfaithfulness for years.
There’s also Babs who was with him before he met Misty.
The story is about the tangled life Toby led with the four women and how he manipulated them all for his own means, until he was murdered.
I loved the way the story was pulled together through the four perspectives and it has a great ending.
Thanks to Bloodhound Books for the opportunity to read this book.

My Review:
Another brilliant read by the fantastic Valerie Keogh. I’ve read several books by this author and she sure does not disappoint. This was a very fast paced book with an unforgettable ending. I loved every minute of it.

So let’s talk about this awesome book. The readers know right off the bat by reading the blurb that Toby has four women involved in his life at the same time. Toby goes missing and now this is where the story takes off. The author alternates each chapter between these four women. You get bits and pieces of the story with each chapter leaving you wanting more and more as the chapter ends. Then bam you get to the end and you get the shock of your life. Nothing is at all as it seems in this book. Each person has a motive and is connected in some way. I do have to say that my least favorite character of the book was Toby because of the way he treated each of these four women. I also want to say that all these four women are not innocent and almost all of them are not very like able. Next on to the story line. The blurb really drew me in and made me want more. I really liked the idea of women getting revenge on a cheating man. Some men think they could do whatever they want without consequences but this proves that every action does have a reaction. On to that roller coaster ride of an ending. I really thought I knew where this book was heading but I was dead wrong. I love it when I’m so wrong about a book. Valerie Keogh you really outdid yourself on this one.

Between the plot, characters and all the twists in this book it made it an easy and fast read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

What a great story. A great domestic psychological thriller with a hint of police procedural Full of twists and turns. Never knowing who was guilty, or even if there was anything to be guilty of. Brilliantly written and constructed I raced through this book, constantly changing my opinions of the characters.

Briefly, Toby Carter is a serial philanderer, a gigalo who uses woman for their money. However, he is also a man that seems to infatuate women with his looks and charm. And then he goes missing. His disappearance is reported to the police by his wife Dee. Although they have not been together for a year he still rang her almost daily and she hasn’t heard from him for a while. He left Dee for Babs; he left Babs for Misty and left Misty for Gwen. Is he missing or dead? And who hated him enough to kill him?

The red herrings in this book abound. There were some great characterisations from Misty, a successful writer who was missing love in her life and was distraught by the end of her relationship and Toby’s subsequent disappearance to Gwen, a hard bitten, successful businesswoman with a knack for choosing the wrong man. I loved this book and give it a resounding ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What is that saying about a woman scorned?
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned the expression is basically to mean that no one is angry as a woman who has been romantically rejected or betrayed well this book has four women involved with one man Troy.
He is a charming, charismatic, good looking and he makes the women in his life feel special and wanted but all he wants is to be showered with gifts and luxury.

Misty is a very successful crime thriller writer and when she met me at a launch party she fell for his charm straight away before long he was living with her and of course spending her money but she didn't mind as she thought she was in love.

Gwen another successful business woman with her own gallery in Knights bridge London. Troy also charmed her and was going to leave Misty for her as her wealth was bigger.

Babs the woman he left behind for Misty when she ran out of money and was no more use to him.

Then there is his long suffering wife of twenty years Dee, she knows what Troy is like but he always comes back to her no matter what. So when Dee hadn't heard from him for a few days she knew something was wrong and reported him missing.

Has something happened to Troy or has he simply moved on to another target? Or has he met a deadly end?

Started well but then…

I did not enjoy the narration from the start. The sentences flowed into each other and the intonation was off. However, the story seemed to be building and the characters weren’t too bad. Then comes the “but”. This novel fell off a cliff and the complication was so unbelievable and the ensuing scenes so ridiculous I was skipping sections to avoid the trauma.

It had potential.

This was an okay read but could have been much better as the premise for a great story was there.
Toby is a gigolo. He has been married to Dee for 20 years and been faithfully unfaithful to her for as long as she can remember. He chooses his mistresses based solely on the financial gain he stands to benefit from them. In each instance he leaves his wife and daughter and moves in with the lady of the moment but gives his wife the contact number of where he is staying. Bizarre!
In this tale there are besides the investigating police duo, 4 main female characters- Dee, plus three of Toby's mistresses. Babs, Misty and Gwen all suffer because of Toby's outrageous behaviour but also because they are willing doormats. Unfortunately all 4 women come across as decidedly stupid which lost the story a star. The ending was also unlikely, which lost it a further star. 3 stars

I wished I could have given more than 3*, because the book really did have some good plot lines. But sadly it seems like the stories "stay where they are" and I dont see much progress as the story continues.

All of the women seems very... I don't want to say stupid, but then again, yes I believe stupid or "blinded by a guy" is the right phrase.

I did like the guessing game, I was just a bit disappointed by the ending.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I liked the beginning and learning what a complete slimball Toby was. My problem was it made women seem weak and useless without men, I wanted to slap the women, the way they were falling over a piece of trash man, even when they knew what he was like. The ending was a bit all-over the place and kinda let it down.

What does a successful writer, a brilliant gallery owner, a physiotherapist and a wife of 20 years have in common? Falling for the wrong man… Toby Carter. What does Tony have in common with these women? Money, until it runs out or a wealthier one comes along. ⁣

Misty is a thriller writer, successful and beautiful. After only a few months living together, Toby drops a bomb “I don’t love you anymore.” He leaves Misty with bags in hand. ⁣

Gwen is a high profile gallery owner. Even more successful than Misty. She is who Toby has left Misty for.⁣

Babs is the woman who Toby left for Misty. Babs believes or she knows he is the love of her life. ⁣

Dee is long suffering wife of Toby. 20 long years of putting up with his philandering but he always comes back to her. ⁣

What happens when these four women’s lives collide over a man? It makes for a great book!⁣

I was sucked into this book from the get go. I couldn’t put it down. ⁣Thank you to Bloodhound Books for an advanced e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

Another fabulous book by Valerie Keogh!

What happens when you mix four scorned women with one cheating man? One thing is for sure, there will be consequences!

I really enjoyed the way this was written - the four women have their own individual chapters, each one feeds the reader a bit more of the story. It twists and turns, and leads the reader to one conclusion before swiftly changing course in the next chapter. You never quite know if what you believe is the truth. Absolutely worth a read, I was hooked and read in one sitting!

DYNAMIC STORY.
Hanwell London Toby Carter, Misty Eastwood.
"I don't love you anymore" Had she misheard? we were perfect together as she looks down to his bags, he was leaving her, Misty a best selling author is numb not knowing what to say, she carried on to finish her eighteenth novel it was rubbish but she pressed send and it's on it's way to the publishers, her sisters Ann and Ursula are delighted she was far to good for him, had he gone back to his ex Babs or is there another woman? she has been used for money and a good lifestyle, is she rid of him? then there's a knock on the door. Three women and one wife have a missing man to find.
DI Hopper and DS Collins have some digging to do, that makes this book full of almighty twists with loads of dynamic plots all the way, the characters and the setting all blend in superbly, when you find all the lies he told it will make you shutter. I loved this authors style and cannot get enough of all her books that you can't put down.
A fitting ending to an exceptional read 5*****

the first few chapters had my attention! then once I got further into the story NOTHING HAPPENED. seriously most of this book is alternating POVs of a stressed woman (one of Toby's 4 girlfriends) wondering "wheres Toby?!" all while two bland police detectives randomly show up to each woman's home. the detectives are all offered tea, coffee or wine from each womans home and then the detectives continue to ask their sneaky questions. couldn't have been a phone call. seripusly though they went to each womans house unannounced multiple times through out the day. Then they leave saying they'll be in touch. the chapter closes on whoever the POV is as she suddenly sees Toby out the corner of her eye. SO stupid. why would he be hiding in a bush? and then she goes to look back and he's gone. wow. thrilling. this book sucked.

I went into The Lies He Told expecting psychological suspense, but what I got felt more like watching intelligent women repeatedly abandon their own judgement.

The premise is solid, but the execution relies on characters making choices that feel less human and more convenient for the plot. Instead of intrigue or psychological sharpness, the story leans heavily on emotional blindness and circular thinking, which I found diminishing rather than gripping.

I stopped reading because I’m intentional about what I consume. This book didn’t challenge me or sharpen my thinking. It drained it. If you’re looking for cleverness, agency, or growth, this may not be the one.

I feel bad but it’s a 2.5
It was fine, but nothing in this book shocked me or excited me, and I’m honestly an easy sell in this genre.
Every character felt two dimensional and incomplete, and the ending felt flat.

But it wasn’t a hard or awful read, it just was eh

A riveting and devious listen
Wow! I truly enjoyed “The Lies He Told” by Valerie Keogh and expertly narrated by Clare Corbett. As a fan of both Keogh and Corbett, I was thrilled to discover this gripping thriller. Keogh’s brilliant storytelling is paired perfectly with Corbett's captivating narration, reminiscent of her work with Rose Robinson. Corbett's presentation brings the characters to life, making it impossible not to become invested in their stories. What sets this thriller apart is its thought-provoking exploration of the consequences of lying and the devastating impact it can have on relationships. The story revolves around four women – Misty, Gwen, Babs and Dee – each with their own tangled web of deceit and heartbreak, all linked to one cheating man. As their lives intersect, the consequences are nothing short of deadly. With its twists and turns, ”The Lies He Told” is a compelling listen that kept me enthralled throughout. Pay close attention, lest you overlook a vital detail. For fans of psychological thrillers, this one is a must-have. Epic, indeed! Worth a cherished credit. My sincere thank you to Keogh, Corbett, as well as Audible, for this complexellent listen. I’ve been listening to Keogh’s books a second time – for good reason.

I'm super-excited for Valerie Keogh and Rose Robinson's collaborative newest release, “His Other Woman,” on November 3rd. Can't wait to dive in!

A brilliant page turner involving four angry women all connected by one man !!

Misty, a successful author, has finally finished her latest novel but whilst she should be celebrating with her boyfriend, Toby, she is stunned by Toby announcing he doesn’t love her and he is moving out.

Gwen runs an art gallery and lives in a luxurious apartment in Knightsbridge. She is looking forward to her new boyfriend, Toby, moving in with her. But the night he is due to move in he doesn’t arrive. Has he changed his mind ?

Gwen decides to track Toby down and soon realises she was not the only woman in his life and actually he was moving from the arms of Misty straight to her apartment. But to make matters worse he also has another ex-girlfriend, Babs, and a long suffering wife, Dee.

Toby has lied and cheated on all four women and they all have motive but could one of them really have murdered him ?

This is a great psychological thriller with plenty of twists to keep you hooked. You will want to read this book in one sitting as you will just want to find out what happened with these four women and the cheating lying Toby !!

Thank you to Bloodhound Books for a digital copy of this book.

What do Misty, Gwen, Babs and Dee have in common? Toby; the beloved, charismatic serial philanderer. Unbeknownst to his gaggle of women Toby smoothly transitions from one woman to the next leaving a trail of broken hearts in his wake.

But when Toby is reported missing by his wife Dee everyone becomes a suspect. Could it be the Misty, the psychological thriller author who was the last to see Toby? Babs seems like a probable candidate. Her hot temper and anger towards Misty has already gotten her into trouble. Perhaps Gwen? The elegant and wealthy art gallery owner and Toby’s current lover. But let’s not forget Dee, the forgiving wife. Did Toby’s womanizing ways finally send her over the edge? Or has Toby pulled another runner and left all these ladies for his next conquest?

Valerie Keogh definitely brought the twists and turns with this book! I loved how the chapters were told from the perspective of each of the ladies. You felt the deceit, angst and obsession that they each experienced. The ending was fantastic and came to fruition so wonderfully. Great read!

What an excellent story! Well written with a clever plot. The empathy I had for the characters at the start of the book soon dwindled the more I found out about them. They are all victims and suspects in equal measures. My suspicious mind was like a pinball, bouncing from one character to the next, never knowing if another twist was going to throw me in different direction.....it did constantly so I think I've scored highly! The blurb will give you all the information you need about the story so I wont add to it. All I can say is Karma....that might make me seem cruel but maybe you will agree with me when you have read the book. A great page turner that I highly recommend.

Another Brilliant book from
This amazing author. Once you start reading one of her books you cannot put it down and this one was no exception.

This was the story of one man and how his charms and deception affected the lives of the 4 women he was involved with. Not just content with being married to his wife he branched out to a succession of girlfriends each one taken in by his charms.

A very clever plot with lots of twists and turns which really drew me in and lots of surprise revelations along the way.

If you like domestic psychological thrillers that keep you on your toes then you will love this.
