Trey Stuart faces the old west with the new west’s age-old problem ‘DRUGS’ in “Adobe Daze.”
Trey Stuart was on his way home to the YbarC ranch in Telluride, CO to deliver his father’s Maserati production sports car back to him. His dad had just had it tuned up in Albuquerque. Trey stopped in Aztec to eat lunch, a go-to place that the family had frequented for years. Just as he was finishing his tacos his black-haired, early twenty-something, easy on the eye’s server asked him if that was his car in front. He admitted it was for the day and she asked him if she could drive it. Introducing herself as Maria Duran, but her friends called her M, and others used “go fast girl.” She told him that she had dragged raced since she was sixteen. Adding that her father restored old California drag racing cars, she would race them and then he would sell them at the shows. He mentioned that he planned to stop in Durango at his family’s favorite bar for a brew, she added that she had planned to go there to spend the night with a girlfriend. He realized that he was sure bored driving alone, so he agreed for her to join him.
Leaving Aztec M told Trey that she had brought a bottle of brandy and dessert so they could stop later and enjoy it. They talked as he drove, getting to know one another. Trey talking about his ranch background and M about her drag racing. When they reached the place to stop for dessert, they enjoyed the brandy and a little heated session before they continued towards Durango. M took over driving when they left but shortly later M passed a tricked-out truck doing 150 mph and then realized her mistake. She knew that the truck belonged to the Mexican cartel drug dealers. She figured that they were most likely coked up and would not like being passed like that, especially if they realized that a girl was driving. Well, that is the beginning of a dire situation, they did not like what had happened, and they were out to take the two of them down.
Join Trey and M as they battle with the drug dealers and find out what happens next…
What did I like? Having read the previous books in this exciting series, I was anxious for the next chapter in the YbarC ranch. Well, Tom did not let me down, this one is even more thrilled-filled than the others if that is even possible. We leave Cooper and Judy for the next generation and the unfortunate problems of the times, drug dealers, and the crap that they can drop on the unfortunate that come up against them. The ranch in New Mexico is the perfect place to do their drug drops and of course, they think that all ranchers are dumb clucks and will just turn a blind eye. Well, they got another think coming when they chose Trey’s ranch.
What will you like? Exciting is just not strong enough to say how much action you will find in this book. Drag racing, drug drops, cattle drive, romance, cops, dealers, and lots of shoot-outs. I don’t want to spoil anything, but this is so exciting, and the action does not quit! Love the characters, and of course, the younger generation of Trey and M are spectacular! Lots of interesting descriptions of the area and the places, Tom will capture your reading eye with all the details and keep them glued till the last page turns. Interesting, exciting, and definitely romance abounds in Tom Tatum’s next book in the New West series, “Adobe Daze” will be available July 28, 2021.
“Adobe Daze“ is Tom Tatum's third novel in his New West Trilogy contemporary western fiction set in Northern Taos County, New Mexico and Southern Colorado. “Adobe Daze” picks up Cooper and Judy's Stuart's 1989-1990 story from “Telluride Top of the World” moving the family saga forward to 2019. Readers are introduced to protagonist Trey Cooper, their son, and former pro extreme skier. Trey has been summoned by his father Cooper to run their family New Mexico Ranch Ute Peak. He is well seasoned in ranching life and confident he will be able to turn the ranch into a money-making operation with cattle, hay, and private elk hunting. His girlfriend Marie Duran, 'M' as she likes to be called, finds their lives endangered by New Aztec (Mexican Cartel) who are using Cooper's ranch land for drug drops causing chaos and death. Several subplots surface as the story develops. Besides the cartel, Trey and M find themselves surrounded by corrupt lawmen and gunmen. Tensions flare up between Anglo, Spanish, Pueblo, and Indian cultures over land and water rights. M, an avid champion dragster, finds herself propelled into a near-death experience precipitated by her manager/father's poor judgment. Multiple twists and turns shape this story with issues resolved in an action-packed old west warfare fashion, guns but with some modern weaponry added in. Trey and M represent leaders of a new generation that will move life to the future into the Next West.
Tatum writes with a sense of realism bringing credibility to his writing with his own real-life experiences. He has created complex characters who face many current thought-provoking issues. Tatum is a Southwest rancher interested in renewable solar and wind energy and the conservation of natural resources. His vast knowledge of western water rights, energy development, Ute, and Navajo culture serves him well in this storyline.
