Ultimately, the decisions of the admirals...

...were the Viceroy's responsibility.

Could the losses have been avoided?

Down on Alfheim, the situation was dire. Some brave men and women had to be left behind for the greater good. Viceroy Miles Hunt, gutted by the losses, needed to stay focused. A Titan-class warship, the Freedom, could be the key to victory, if it were fully operational with a trained crew.

It was not.

Could Miles find another ally to be a wild card?

Sam, the medical Synth, faced something the programmers never expected--a moment where the only option was to break free of the code. The battle was fierce and there didn't seem to be a way out, until Sam came up with a plan.

Would it save them?

The Republic needed a big win, one that would force peace, but they might have underestimated the resolve of the Zodarks. The superships were on the way, but time wasn't on their side.

The tide of the war had shifted.

You'll love this fifth installment of the Rise of the Republic series because this gripping story of survival and grit will have you sitting on the edge of your seat until the end.

The first three books in the series were good, the forth book consisting of overdone ground war detaila was fairly boring to read, and I ended skipping a lot of pages. The instant book, fifth in the series, was an absolute disappointment. Aside from such errors as humans being alive in the age of dinosaurs and the great flood problem, the author's choice of ending the war in a cease fire made no sense given all the outstanding issues involving the destruction of human planets, who controls what planets, the known propensity of the enemy to be traitous, the missing 8 billion human children, on and on. A cease fire made no logical sense, and it seems the author was just setting up a catastrophe for future books.

The authors' writing style for the books involving alternating between the boring ground war actions and the larger scale happenings in space was frustrating as often I found myself skipping pages of the ground war to find out was happening in the bigger picture many chapters later. At this point I am not sure if it is worth reading further into the series.

Another intense read with a definitive change at the end. Sometimes the books feel like part 1 and part 2 but this really feels like the end of something. Intense as hell but this time you get a sense of progress which is such a relief!

The battle over Alfheim did not go well for the Republic. In fact, it went terribly bad for the Republic Army. Some two-hundred thousands soldiers, contractors and civilians had been left on the planet when the fleet had to do a hasty retreat. Those soldiers were slowly dying while hiding in caves and any place else they could find. The Orbots and the Zodarks are relentless pursuing any stray units and viciously eliminating them when found. The Republic soldiers are running out of food and ammo as well as anything else that might make their lives even a little better. Relief was coming, but whether it was coming soon enough was a big question.

The Primords had also left a considerable force on planet Alfheim although they seemed to be better stocked for supplies and had a very effective intelligence network working on the planet. Still, they needed the support of the Republic Army soldiers to actually get anything done. They now had intel about a space elevator being constructed at a particular location. That elevator was going to be supporting a massive orbital defense platform if and when it got built. The Primord Commander wanted the Republic Army to assist in destroying the ground base for the elevator. It didn't take any hard figuring to know that the Zodarks would be heavily defending this critical base. 1st Lt Henry Magnussen, now commander of what remained of Alpha Company, 312th Battalion, was responsible for the sector where the space elevator was located so it was up to him to gather his troops and get this base destroyed. He knew that doing so would also probably wipe out the rest of his company, but they were probably going to be wiped out sometime soon anyway so he figured they might just do some harm while they could.

You'll read about a lot of the ground action on Alfheim in this book. It gets pretty intense at times and it's great to read about some of the actions of individual soldiers who are doing their jobs on a cold, frozen planet with very little in the way of support. Meanwhile, Viceroy Hunt is attempting to put together a massive fleet to come back to Aflheim and retake the planet and save what is left of the two-hundred thousand he left behind. Earth has been producing a massive amount of ships with the help of some of the Alliance aliens. Hunt believes he has what he needs to get back to Aflheim and even possibly end this entire war.

So, we do get to read about a major space battle towards the middle of the book. It is huge and lots of starships are being destroyed. On the off chance that the Orbots have had enough fighting, he contacts their Admiral in charge of their side of the battle. The Orbots have never previously engaged any of the Alliance military during a battle for any reason, yet, this time they do!

What comes of this contact will probably surprise you, but it will not be the end of the story. There's still a lot going on that needs to be handled or the fighting will be started up again and it's going to be a lot worse. I enjoy reading these books due to the details the writer takes in telling the story. I'll continue reading and will look forward to book 6, "Into the Calm", when it becomes available on/about 21 June 2022.

David Drake, You Have Company

There are a very few Military Science Fiction authors who are able to get military rank and Command Structure down so as to be believable to current, retired and previous service personnel. Tom Edward's, TC MANNING and James Rosone belong in that group.

This book, actually the entire series, portrays war as it is. Nasty, dirty, grubby and far from the exciting, glorious portrayals many writers try to show. If by exciting you mean adrenaline pumped terror, this book is exciting. If by glorious you mean to show that men and women are capable of extraordinary feats that in retrospect appear glorious, this book shows some of those extraordinary feats.

This book also shows that the real people performing these feats don't think of themselves as special. Mostly they think of themselves simply as having done their job.

The characters this series share with us presents the experiences from the newest green private, solid Non-coms, rookie officers, mustangs, company and field grade officers and staff and general officers. It also shows a special appreciation of our corps of Medics and Doctors dedicated to the saving of the lives of our on ground troops and Naval personnel.

These are all "technical" aspects of the series important to a few readers. Aside from that, this is one hel...heck of a yarn. "I'M" going to continue reading in this universe and also read the other fiction written in this universe. I'm also going to read the non-fiction.

I enthusiastically recommend this book and this series.

Good reminder of why James Rosone is one of the best military fiction writers. He did a great job of balancing the war scenes with the various character arcs. The entire premise of the various factions involved in the war, the planet settings and the technology continue to enhance the overall story. And, of course, he ended it with a perfect lead-up to the next book. Now enters the spy novel plot.

Oh, and it very much helps that the characters are realistic and intelligent (you'd think that would be a prerequisite for space travel and leadership, but it's been a recurring problem with writers these days, it seems.).

Into The Fire James Toxins. TC Manning

It would appear to the general public on Earth and it's other colonies the war is over. No one in a position of power in the military or leaders of planets that assisted Earth's armies, the Republic all believe it to be a temporary truce to rebuild their Armies. The Republic's number one enemy the Zodarks have no intention of maintaining a lasting peace.Another excellent read this series. Enjoyed immensely!!

The only disappointment I have with this book.... Is I have to wait another month for book 6.
One of the best book series I have read that brings back memories of my time in the Military and brings together so many ideas and cutting edge technologies that I read from science magazines and books over the years.
I find that discussing the stories, tech and ideas of this book with my kids makes our imaginations run wild.

good but flawed

Fun yarn though at times felt author took easy option relative to storyline e.g a neurologist that makes you smarter or know all languages. Found it amusing a SF operator telling a stranger he is SF? Lastly how about those English named galaxies….
Enjoyed it overall as good space battles. One question? Why are the last two books more expensive with significantly less pages!!! Not sure it will be worth it…

Yet another good read

I’ve waited for this book for months. My only complaint is these authors can’t write fast enough for me! This book takes you into the battle and with excellent descriptive writing you get lost in their stories. I would highly recommend this series of books..

Gripping story, awkward prose

A gripping story full of both action and personal interactions among well developed characters bogs down by rehashing descriptions, using paragraphs instead of a phrase or two, and conversations which go on for several paragraphs reusing pronouns until the reader must backtrack to figure out some meaning within the dialogue.

Enjoyable

Sometimes, you need a good dependable book to get you through rough times. Something to take you to a far-off place for a moment. This series has that special sauce that allowed me to lose myself in the characters' journey.

Good read, great storyline, nothing too crazy.

Into The Fire by James Rosone delivers a great SiFy experience!

I liked the continuation of the stoy presented in the Rise of the Republic series and the introduction of new plot lines. The introduction of of the spie plot and the marrage of Roice added a lot to the story line. I would recomend this work to readers who enjoy action adventure and Sience Fiction.

Liam and Sara are the most annoying belters, not sure who is worse. Liam who naively thinks the war is nothing to do with them or Sara who knows how bad it is and what's at risk but want to live, literally, in there own little world. I hope how they started their society as pirates comes out in the books.

Those are two stand out characters from the B plot of the book.

Good book.

Another fine book in the series

Another fine book in the series. The combat description is great. I love the different personal stories. The ending is a bit unsatisfactory but then again so is real life so I ended up liking it to for its realism.

Great Series!

This is like Star Wars only more comprehensive. Just the right amount of detail without being cumbersome. You get the feeling these are real people. This would make a terrific movie series or a multi-season TV series. I look forward to each new book.

Best series of sci-fi books I've ever read. Far-fetched and overdone, some would say, but what is sci-fi it not that. Wouldn't be sci-fi otherwise. Even so, it is so well put together, that it's understandable. Thank you, James Rosone. Many more to come, I hope. I've just started book 6.

very well thought out book

Very well thought out book on what could be in our future. I also put the writing on the same page as the flight of the old dog series (about upgraded B52s)

Great extension to series.

Continuity editor needs some help. But in total, I am enjoying this series. You don't necessarily need a military background to keep up, the author does an excellent job explaining terms to the lay person's POV.

Fantastic space opera

The authors have truly created a rich universe! There is a large "cast of characters" but they somehow make it manageable.

The combat scenes (both space and land) are exciting and well-written.

I can't wait to read more!!!
