Experience fresh connections to contemporary worship and devotional practices in this eight-session video-based study of Psalms with Bible scholar Sandra Richter (streaming video included).
The book of Psalms is well-known and well-worn. It is the Old Testament book most often quoted in the New Testament, and its quotations can be found everywhere from John Milton to Star Trek to Congressional speeches. Why so much attention? The Church Father Athanasius said it best—most of Scripture speaks to us, but the Book of Psalms speaks for us.

Probably my favorite book of the Bible (I know I’m not being very original in that statement, but I suppose it’s a favorite for so many for good reason!). I like this statement: most of the books of the Bible speak TO you; but the psalms speak FOR you. How many, many times I have cried those laments; I have heart-swelled with the praise of those psalms for His inestimable attributes; I have bent my heart with the psalmist in profound thankfulness. Yes. This is my favorite book of the Bible. Well, my top five. Or my top 66. I love His Word. But Psalms is special. And this little study of psalms was a beautiful way to spend my morning these last few weeks. I have learned things I didn’t know. I have been strengthened by remembering. I have been heartened by new perspective.
I wasn’t sure how to rate this one because Sandy is GREAT and it’d be the coolest thing to sit in one of her classes. I went into this (without really reading the description) thinking that we’d cover all of the psalms, and I was like in 8 sessions?? Ok! Her context and narrative were really interesting and helpful in understanding the psalms we worked through. Some of it felt disjointed though, ergo the three stars. I’d be game for another study by Sandy especially if it’s a video study.
Sandy does a great job in all her work books. I would recommend editing out all the references to the scamdemic. I hope California doesn’t have a negative influence on her.
