Having survived the events at the Invader encampment, Vic finds and exposes even more corruption and conspiracies in his own city. As an operative of the United Forces of Humanity and its secret covert group known as the Knight Hunters, we join Vic as he digs even deeper into the underbelly of humanity's survival. In doing so he uncovers even more nefarious activities that go beyond the horrors he's already unearthed. And as always, the threat from the Invaders is a constant risk that could end everything he holds dear. ______________________ As with book 1, this story continues its mix of fantasy and sci-fi with an OP main character, magic, guns, crafting, violence, sarcasm, love, betrayal, swearing, blood, gore, and some sexual innuendo (fades to black with no explicit sex scenes). Book 2 adds a bit of empire building on top of everything else.
Hey readers! I'm author D.I. Freed. Thank you for looking into my books. I'm a computer and gaming geek who loved epic fantasy, sci-fi books from the moment I could read. I've also loved playing video games and that got me into the LitRPG genre. And so I decided to give writing it a shot. I hope you enjoy my books. I wish you the best. Stay safe and healthy!
Peggie's finally hatched! I love peregrine falcons, they're so beautiful... the fact she's as big as Vic makes her even more so.
I do like Vic as a character but he's such a bellend, if Aria is his spouse, he values her and sees her as his equal, then I wish he'd involve her more in the day to day stuff so she's aware of what's actually going on instead of always leaving her to train by herself, pine for Vic and wait for his inconsiderate arse to come back from whatever mission he's on. Selfish prick.
Please do better Mr. Freed!
Women aren’t all damsels in distress and treating Aria like she’s just there to sexually and emotionally please Vic when he has time for her is so fcuking gross.
ALSO, Elves aren’t just gorgeous, they’re badass… why would you make Aria less than?

I great mix of the lit rpg I’ve come to love and military special forces and black ops work. The MC is Over Powered compared to normal people, however is barely improving fast enough to keep up with the large number of enemies and an unknown super power. This is my new favorite series and I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the next one. Definitely a series I will re-read multiple times!
I can not remember the last time I was this disappointed in a sequel.
I loved the first book. I loved the characters, I was so excited to see the next one come out. It was such a let down! The fight at the end of book one was apparently just to set up the massive spending spree in this book. The controlled, professional soldier was replaced with a fool who just wanted to push the red button over and over again. Not one encounter did not have a health and or mana warning, it simply lost all meaning halfway through the book. The helping hand to various people had no basis in trust and just came off as foolhardy. The encounters could not have been more unrealistically scripted. The social awkwardness coming from the exact same mistake over and over was irritating, not endearing. I can not express how disappointed I am in this book. Also, why was Aria's character introduced if she was just going to be sidelined the entire time. The forced emotional reactions added with delaying quests for months, MONTHS, for no good reason. The whole thing is a contrived mess.
I was very impressed by how quickly this story grabbed me and did not let go. If you are like me and hate having to force yourself to read half a book before it even gets to the story this is NOT boring. I am very excited about Vic and his future endeavors.
Assault is the second book in the Invasion series by D. I. Freed.
I’m terribly sad that there isn’t more of this series already released. Hopefully the author will follow trend and be out with number three before, or near, years end so there won’t be too long of a wait.
The opposing side in this multiverse (¿) war of species revealed a mighty controversial secret (imo) that could completely change the end game for this series and our main characters progression irrevocably. If the source of this information is to be trusted (unlikely 100%), and there are no new surprises in store. In this vein, it is incredibly clear that his class will have something to do with deciding their fate, and possibly with discovering the larger evil behind the humans almost complete devastation.
I grow to love Vic more with each passing moment. Completely ignoring that all of his closer confidantes are all women generally. His back story, the struggles, and traumatic experiences he’s faced to reach where he is and ultimately be the best at his profession keep popping up to reek havoc in tiny doses on ones emotions. You can increasingly see the discrepancies in how he would have tackled his terribly mounting responsibilities towards the betterment of the world without those he has come to lean on, and the path he takes now.
I hope there will be deeper connections to more varying beastkin in the future. The fish kin he encounters in this book were a delight and an intriguing new race for this series, not previously touched on.
His Living Inventory will come to have a big role to play, I think this is obvious at this point. That and the mystery of what his new evolution/leveling cocoon will bring for his progression are my biggest desires to decipher.

While it is a decent read on kindle unlimited i did listen to it on audible. If i wasn’t a trucker and had a discount after buying the book Ii wouldn’t have spent the money despite how well the author brought D. I. Freed’s story to life. This story is a first person present tense litrpg with heavy and repetitive screen and status reads. When you can glance at it and skip getting back to the story when listening to it…it can be 5 plus minutes of stats, upgrades, and titles. It does have foul language but is otherwise clean. It has a bit of romance mostly just fade to black moment. There is also some humor and interesting surprisingly emotional moments.
This is a chapter by chapter release Royal Road story. It means that the chapters are designed to be interesting to pull the reader through but does make it feel like a run on story with a few climatic moments put in. The concept is interesting and as long as you're in it for a quick entertaining litrpg read you will have fun.
I think D. I. Freed has honed their skills and made some good editorial improvement in their second series Jade Phoenix. That is a royal road story but one that has seen a good amount of edits and rewrites I think.
Royal Road does provide a good amount of writes a place to hashout their ideas, get feed back, and if they are lucky funding. Such sites have created a style of writing that at times ignores the classic three act story. it also makes it harder for writers to fix issues they missed and or go back and plant foreshadowing in past chapters. This seems true for this story but having and OP Main protagonist means we are in it more for the fun action than any depth.
The second book picks up right where the first ends, and there are some improvements and some regression.
The good is that the action picks up, with a good amount of time spent in an orc war camp as it prepares to fight against the outpost protecting the Hood Canal Bridge (I think). Vic learns a load of secrets there, ultimately finding out that he's fighting against the wrong enemy.
The level upgrades give us insights into Aria, who has been a bit of a cutout character until now. She's beautiful and learning about how to fight and be stealthy, but other than that we don't know much about her until these interludes.
Meanwhile, Vic has a crazy amount of business going on as he builds up his various businesses. Jo his nano AI helps, and while it isn't always well thought out, it does keep life interesting.
The bad is the blue box updates. I don't know where they went wrong, but something happened and they turned repetitive instead of informative. It was the same in book 1 but I was willing to forgive for a new author.
I can't do that for book 2. The pacing is much better here, and while it's far from being a perfect book, it's fun enough that I can overlook a lot of problems.
But not the blue boxes. Those have to be fixed.
4.5/5 I can't recommend it, but I had a lot of fun reading it.
Fun continuation to a great 1st book. This is a long book which is good in this case. Definitely get your money's worth. This book basically describes many evolution's of the MC. His level ups are not simple like most lit Or computer games. These take days even months. He is building a business to help humanity as well as his direct skill set which is destroying the enemy. He is of course OP. But that doesn't detract from the story too much. He has enough near death experiences to make up for the fact That he is incredibly powerful. However there is always a sense of wonder and discovery because he learns about his powers and abilities the same time we do. Know manual came with his system.I enjoy the MC , Vic, and his morality. I even appreciate his power set. He is learning in growing and I truly enjoy every evolution and what he gets out of it. And the crafting is a bonus. But we knew that from book 1 that it would eventually happen. It is a cheat at least according to Vic but A welcome one. I hope that we don't have to wait as long for the next book but regardless I will be eager for it.
interesting story with characters of different species
The MC continues to get Overpowered as he finds that the world they thought they knew is way different from what is actually going on. The demons have different strengths and agendas than believed. There are traitorous humans working against humanity for their own enrichment… surprise, surprise, surprise…. NOT!
The MC continues to level up as his body reconfigures for weeks at a time. His allies get more and more firmly in his corner as unsuspected culprits are identified and plans are developed to deal with them.
Meanwhile, the MC is learning to develop a physical and emotional relationship with his elven mate, while his business partners sister really, really wants to get in his pants too. There are worst problem to have (wink, wink).
Its been awhile since this book was released and the author appears to be working on another excellent series (the Jade Phoenix) with the next book scheduled for a January release (can’t wait). Hopefully he will soon get back to the Assault series as well, though the Jade Phoenix is really quite an awesome story!! Check out my 5-star reviews on that series.
The first was good and I was excited that Vic was about to get into I usually love which is basebuilding. Unfortunately all that really entailed his talking to Jo about what to do and how to do it for at least 50% of the book, just conversations. Sure he’d meet with people and other stuff but it usually incredibly rushed.
Aria was fine in the first book as well but seems to have been relegated to a sideline character here who just worries constantly about the MC and at the end they have sex, a lot.
I like the premise of the system and the world, being fighting’s for millennia, but there’s only so much that can do for a story. Even the action in this was mostly quick darkness stuff unless that didn’t work in which case he is pushed around for awhile until he eventually wins.
Will likely continue because it’s fun popcorn but don’t expect anything great from this. 5/10
The main character, Vic, is a good balance of caring human and, when necessary, child assassin. I like how the author is able to balance Vic's being increasingly overpowered with frequent near death experiences. This helps keep him from getting a swelled head, not that he's really the type to get that, and shows that there is almost always someone more powerful around.
We start learning a bit more in this book about several of the mysteries in this series, including why the orcs attack everyone the way they do, their warchiefs, why the other allies races might be especially interested in Earth, and a little bit more about Vic's possible origins.
The series is really ramping up! There is so much more going on that I won't list, so as not to spoil anything for other readers. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series.
I feel like at this point the author must have made enough money to hire someone to shock them every time they try to make the MC faint. It's annoying, it's contrived, it's lazy writing, and it rips any of the immersion or enjoyment out of the reader.
All that being said, the world-building is imaginative and there are several interesting moments. But like, you're writing a wish-fulfillment narrative where the main dude is OP and most side characters exist to make him seem cooler. You can do without resorting to him blacking out a dozen times.
The sheer quantity of mistakes (Typo, grammatical, spelling), is simply staggering considering the first book.
Even more so in comparison to the hundreds of books I’ve read that never even came close to the sheer quantity of mistakes.
Most of which can be fixed by running the boom through something similar to Google Docs (An app or program that has an edit/correct feature).
Regardless though. Good book, looking forward to the third.
Note to author (Assuming they read this, unlikely though it may be): Take your time. Don’t rush. Triple check the end-result. Have someone run quality control.
This story is very involved it has a lot of action a lot of intrigue and of course the snarky humor. The world building continues and we learn more about the adversaries that humanity and humanities allies face. This story does have a lot of cultivation going on things that the main character is learning and advances in classes and his ability levels. The story is getting very interesting now and I can't wait to see where it goes next.
very well done book, but so far no continuation in the series.
This is a excellent book, but there are two caveats. The first one is the book ending in a cliffhanger, the second is that there has not been a new release in this book series. The only thing I did not like in this book was the author like many authors, using his character as a meat shield. The characters are interesting, the world building is OK and the magic system is well done. I hope the author one day decide to follow up with this series. I will definitely read it.
Pretty good overall, but a few things keep it at the 4 star level. Two examples: too long for what happens, and it bogs down in info dumps about business decisions, etc. I'm also not 100% sold on the MC, and as I sit here writing this I can't quite put "why" into words. Probably due to the info dumps he's prone to? A few other things too, but at least he's not fatally flawed.
If you read the first one this one doesn't fall too far from that tree, for good or ill.
I bought the first book because of the picture on the cover. But after reading the first few pages I was hooked. Good storyline and characters kept me pushing and pushing to get to the end. This second book is just as good. I am not really a LitRPG fan so just skim those parts, looking forward to next instalment.
I can’t even tell you what I like about this book. So many great and wonderful things. The author really builds up the MC and his back story. He’s tremendously OP but not in a way that makes his fights seem easy. You just have to read to get it. I can’t wait for the next installment of the series. I literally could not put this one down
I really enjoyed this book! This first one was really good, and this one was even better! I love the characters (especially the OP main character) and world building. It just a great presentation of a really powerful, really likable, and really bad ass main character that still gets his butt kicked somethings. I can’t wait for the next book!
OMG I am not sure if I will ever get enough of this series. Vic evolved a lot in this book. It left off at a perfect point for a pickup in the 3rd book, witch I can't wait to read. I read books one and two with my unlimited membership but I am going back and buying the series.
I loathe when authors go the no food no water route, eating is one of the main pleasures of being alive. I also dislike how everything falls into the MCs lap. The plot armor is a little to thick.
Honestly, if u like LITRPG you will love this series. It's been a wonderful journey so far. Only bad thing I can say is that book 3 isn't out yet. I so want to read book 3 !
Fantastic read. I couldn't put it down. Just like the first book. I really enjoy how Vic is walking death incarnate for his enemies but, that we see the emotional impact and toll that has. Humanized heroes are the best
Really liked this book, well written and easy to follow all the charts and the characters, hopefully there will a next book to carry on with the story. Only picky complaint is missing a word in a sentence or incorrect description, not many found though.
Another great read in the series. I like how the building portion of the story of fairly short and does not completely take over the book. I am hoping for less of that and more of the personal growth of the team in the next book. Will definitely buy the next
This book was right down my alley. I loved every bit of it. It seamlessly continued from Book 1 and I cannot wait for Book 3! For me the author kept pulling me along all the way through the series so far. Five starts.
The author has wrote a great and entertaining story exciting from start to finish the hero fun to follow even do he gets hurt a lot but in the end he's a Super Hero!! Let's hope book 3 comes out soon??
The MC is so over powered but I love over powered characters! His female lead is unfortunately a bit weak, which is weird, considering her lineage. I’m looking forward to the next book.
A fun continuation of the story. A surprisingly long book that kept me entertained all the way. The mc makes good gains and the plot stayed interesting. Looking forward to the next book.
