David Taylor excels here. This really is a gripping and gritty police detective versus serial killer story. Most of the action is cerebral or simply character driven. But it is not lacking physical action either.
This tale draws on the best of the genre without ever feeling like one has read it or seen it before. The characters may be similar to others we have come across in fiction but that is mainly due to hitting the realism. Hard. Never feels like a cliché though.
It works well in black and white. Emotions are conveyed clearly. And the actually action explodes from the pages. The between action parts of the story never fail to be engaging. Even visually.
Looking forward to reading more from David Taylor. Fortunately, I have The Grave sitting on the shelf...
UPDATE: I have just read the remastered version released this year. The story is executed so well and the entire piece is a much more polished piece. This remains a 5 star read.
