One Iridescent Night is the ultimate comfort read. It feels like a blend of all my favorite versions of Cinderella with a hint of The Selection. A must read for fairytale lovers!

What can I possibly say about this book? Short version: I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS STORY!

Now for the long version:

This story is beautifully inspired by a beloved princess from many peoples childhoods. However, this one dives deeper into our leading lady's past, her traumatizing present, and the internal struggles she must face because of the actions of others.

Our story follows Evelyn, or Evy to those in the know, a gracious, iridescent lady who has been forced into servitude after her mother's passing and her father remarried a vicious, manipulative woman. Her father's true colors begin to show, his cruel, violent nature constantly used against Evy and her safety. Yet, her life takes an unexpected twist when her childhood best friend, Liam, suddenly reappears in her life. Yet, he is no longer the young field hand she remembers but a strong, loyal Captain of the Guard for the Kingdom's crowned Prince, Ryker. So much can change in one night, but can Evy overcome the inner demons lurking inside while also serving the emotional needs of everyone else around her?

All three of our main cast are truly inspiring characters that are put through the ringer in this story. Evy, a kind-hearted woman, with hidden strength, struggling to escape her torturous family while also still feeling a sense of obedience to them. Liam, a fiercely loyal and brave soldier who wonders if he is even good enough for, not only the woman he has been in love with for years, but the devotion of those closest to him. And Ryker, a charming, yet cunning Prince who struggles to come to terms with the heavy weight of personal loss and the truth about falling in love.

One Iridescent Night is full of beautifully crafted, relatable characters, swoon-worthy romances, and jarring twists that will keep you gripped to the story until the last page. This book will teach you that although you may feel broken inside, your strength and courage can always be found, if you are willing to fight for it.

Trigger warnings: This book contains scenes of domestic abuse, assault, and PTSD. Please be advised!

Amazing. Incredible. A breath of fresh air in a world of fairy tales that lack substance. I'll admit, I'd grown skeptical that a fairy tale could be written for adults while having depth and substance and this book changed my mind. It's one of the best fairy tales I've ever read and it's so clear that the author was MEANT to write this book.

Each character comes to life and you'll find yourself feeling like you know them. You'll miss them when you close the book and finishing that final page will be bittersweet. This is a book you'll re read time and time again!

If you're on the fence about it, just get it. It's amazing and I am DYING for more from this amazing author!

One Iridescent Night is a sweet romance with not one but two swoon-worthy male leads and a love triangle that will keep you flipping pages and begging for more.

You will be rooting for Evelyn to get her HEA from the very first chapter. Wik keeps you wondering: WHO WILL SHE CHOOSE? The Captain of the Guard or the handsome Prince? Old love or new? If I had to pick between Liam and Ryker, I'd choose... (cue loads of nail biting and stressful music)... BOTH. That's right. I'd pick them both and work out an every-other-week custody schedule.

Add this to your TBR if you like:
-Fairy tale retellings
-Sweet Romance
-Love Triangles
-Swoony Heroes
-Angsty Angst

Not for me
It was not credible enough- the language, the mores- for any fantasy/ medieval setting. I got the vibe that it was a historically ambiguous, light fantasy, and there is naught wrong with that. Its just that I've gone in too deep into HRs and can no longer enjoy/ immerse myself in works that aren't even in the spirit of setting the right atmosphere. But aside from that, I found the characters not well enough developed, like the childhood love story, the characters are lightly drawn and thus hard to picture as actual people. En fin, couldn't get into it.

My favorite book of 2021!!! This was absolutely an amazing book! Seriously, trust me just go buy it! I ended up reading it in one sitting!

This is a beautiful Cinderella retelling. I love Brianne's writing! It just sucks you in heart and soul - wonderful, well thought out characters, good world building, descriptive enough to see it all without it being an info dump. 👏👏👏 It's very well done! The plot is sound and moved at a good pace. You can see the Cinderella influences but it still makes its own story. Just fantastic!

The MC Evy is so fantastically written! She's struggling with PTSD and anxiety but still manages to be brave and strong. I've never related to a character so much! I love her and cried throughout this book. I just felt so seen.

And the boys in this book 🔥! So well written that honestly I can't choose if I like Liam or Ryker better. 😍 That's good writing there!! They're completely swoon worthy!!! Becca is my hero! She's fantastically brave and sassy and I'm here for it!!

This technically hasn't even released yet and I can't wait for the next installment! Kudos to Brianne and if I could give it a million ⭐ I totally would!!

“I needed time, not boys.”

I love a good Cinderella re-telling and this one did not disappoint! The multiple POV really made you feel in it with the characters, their mindset, their struggles. And the romantasy style crafted an immersive world that I did not want to leave.

That being said, this was NOT always the lightest read, and the depiction of domestic abuse, particularly the physical element, was graphic. So I appreciated the sensitivity that the author has to their readership, having experienced C-PTSD herself, and knowing the importance of starting this book out with a content warning.

I was so happy with the ending, with Evy coming into her own and asserting her boundaries after experiencing heavy trauma—this was her powerful moment of self-care, healing and strength!

This book is definitely for you if you like:
- Love triangles
- Closed-door romance
- Some light fairy action
- “She’s not like other girls (she’s part fairy)”
- Short chapter-style

I felt like the ending was such a cliffhanger and I’m so ready to continue on with Evy and the boys’ journey to get more into the magic and palace intrigue element of the story! Also, Team Liam for sure.

I'm not a fan of Cinderella stories, but this one changed my perspective! I loved the way Wik wove elements of the familiar tale in, but they took creative liberties. Liam and Ryker were both engaging love interests, and Evy was an easy protagonist to connect with.
At points, I wished Evy had a little more agency, and I felt like certain scenes and descriptions could have been more fleshed out. But overall, this was a quick, enjoyable read, and a MUCH better version of Cinderella.
I also applaud the author for including difficult themes of DV and some mature moments, and handling them with grace. I also felt like the character's journey through hope and healing was inspiring, and absolutely a needed perspective in the genre.
If you love fairytales, romance, and 'feel good' that doesn't forsake hardship, this book is absolutely for you!

Most Cinderella retellings either 1) feel like Cinderella, but are just ehhh, or 2) are great, but don't feel like Cinderella. This is one of the VERY few that actually has that very Cinderella-feel while also being a wonderful novel! If Ella Enchanted is the tween/teen Cinderella retelling, this is the adult version. (So more mature content, including domestic abuse and a bit toward the steamy end of the "clean and wholesome" spectrum of stories.)

This is book 1 of a series, so keep that in mind! Not everything is resolved at the end. Also, it's basically one big huge love triangle, so if you hate those, you probably won't enjoy this book. But if you liked the "Maxon v. Aspen" vibe in The Selection, you'll like this. Except both Ryker and Liam are pretty dang cute love interests. I *think* I lean Liam, but I was forever changing my mind!

Overall, a very enjoyable read!

If you love fairytale retellings with a magically darker spin, you need to read One Iridescent Night.

I didn’t know what to expect with this one. I had never read a retelling before, and in my head I felt like I knew what would happen. But nope—Brianne Wik knows how to surprise you (and break your heart), in all the best ways possible.

I loved the trope twists, real-life issues addressed, and the slight cliffhanger at the end. The romance was also not what I expected and I’m all for it! But I do know who I’m rooting for ;)

A case of "this book just wasn't for me." I love Cinderella retellings and love triangles, so I definitely enjoyed that aspect. However, I'm not a big fan of reading the male love interest's POV in romance, even with both men of the love triangle included, and I also generally don't enjoy fairy tale retellings with a modern feel.

This book was very well written and engaging, though, and I liked the darker, adult elements of the Cinderella story it touched on. If you're a fan of fairy tale retellings with love triangles, multi POV, a modern feel, and adult complexity, you'll love this one.

Wow. Just amazing. What a enchanting Cinderella Retelling that seriously made me question if I prefer this then the ACTUAL Cinderella story. Brianne Wiks writing is inviting and honest. The verbal and physical abuse from her Father made me cringe and tear up a few times. Evy, so greatly wanted to be loved by her father and had the biggest heart. The characters were all so well written that I wanted to know more about each one of them.

Hello, love triangle. I was reminded quickly that love triangles make me go a tad crazy and I was immedately team Liam. I felt like a young teenager again giddy and excited whenever the two were together.

Bring on book two! <3

This is such an enchanting read, one that grabs you from the very start. A well written exciting Cinderella retelling with some twists, turns and surprises. The world building is descriptive and draws you in, the storyline captivating and at times a little heartbreaking and the characters, well Evelyn is a strong female mc despite many years of neglect and abuse and Liam her oh so handsome best friend and Ryker our oh so handsome prince make up this love triangle. It’s an incredible journey of sweet romance, magic, mystery and hope set in a world you will not want to leave.

As someone who adores fairytales, I was very excited when I heard about this Cinderella re-telling. Though I’ve seen and read many versions, the story is timeless, and Brianne’s take is just enough like the original to feel familiar, but different enough to be refreshing. The prose is fairly simplistic syntactically, but this fits well with Evy’s almost childlike innocence, and it also meant I sailed through it. As a slow reader, it’s rare that I finish a book in a week. But with this one, I found my eyes gliding through the words – and I kept getting that ‘just one more line’ pull as I went. It weighs fairly heavily on the ‘telling’ side, but it’s interspersed with some beautiful descriptions and gripping action, and do you know what? Fairytales are MEANT to be 'told', so I think that lends itself to the genre very well.

A bright optimism radiates from the page, in varying levels from the three perspectives we hear from: Evy, then the two love interests Liam and Ryker. Each with a distinct voice, vivid appearance and layered personality, I love how it really feels like we’re hearing from them directly. There’s Evy with her wide-eyed wonder and bewilderment at the world, Liam with his grounded loyalty and deep thinking, and Ryker with his optimistic urgency and suave grandeur. The balance between them works brilliantly for letting the story unfold from different angles, and allows us to have equal input from both boys so we’re not biased against one or the other. Mainly at the start, there is a bit of recapping, where parts of the same events are told again from the other person’s viewpoint. This could seem repetitive, but I actually loved being able to see what the other character was thinking in the same moment, especially when we didn’t know them so well yet.

I adore Liam and Ryker’s relationship, and in many ways it’s the backbone to the story. Other highlights are Cook and Jimmy (and their adorable connection with Evy), the morally grey intrigue of Camilla, the ethereal mystery of Chrissy, and the brilliant bluntness of the loyal Becca, who was voicing my thoughts throughout.

All the characters are so vivid in my mind, with their own particular aesthetics and demeanours – a testament to how Brianne has rendered them. The description is never overdone, but there’s just enough to make their appearances click and the world feel rich in imagery and colour. The only two that didn’t feel fully ‘3d’ to me were Frank and Katerina – I’m always interested in the redeeming qualities and nuances of antagonists, and while we got a glimpse of that from Frank at times, I didn’t feel like we got a full insight into his mind. There were some indications, though. Evy's father is responsible for the majority of distressing scenes in the book, which is something that differs from the original tale. I found these difficult - firstly, because they were so foreign and uncomfortable to me. As such, I think Brianne is so brave to have written them, and they are handled with respect and empathy. The other reason was that I couldn’t fathom WHY Evy's father was doing what he was doing. But then I realised: that’s the very question Evy is asking herself. As we hear it from her perspective, there is a lack of clarity there BECAUSE she doesn’t understand it. Reading between the lines, we can assume he treats her poorly because in his eyes, she belongs to an old life that reminds him of her mother – something that is painful for him to comprehend. Thus, he takes it out on Evy and puts a wall up in front of the person he used to be. This, of course, is a big part of why we sympathise so much with Evy.

Meanwhile, I couldn’t quite draw much of an analysis from Katerina. She felt a bit caricatured and two-dimensional, and I couldn't work out what her motivations were. But I’ll let that slide, because if there was ever a hyperbolised character in the history of fairytales, it’s Cinderella’s stepmother.

With these sorts of nods to the source material, Brianne really captured the knack of how fairytales describe minimally yet evoke much. It’s not like there are any lengthy descriptions of décor, surroundings or clothing, but there is just enough that I was picturing it so vividly – the appearance and atmosphere of every location was so clear. A particular highlight was the royal garden; a dreamy, magical place that added a fantastical richness to the setting. I also thought it was brilliant that the iconic midnight-chimes scene wasn’t actually too much of a feature, and was in fact told from the prince’s perspective, which is something we don’t often see. I’m very intrigued by the fantastical element that gradually came to light through the second half, and to see how Evy explores it. I also can’t wait to see how she fares in her new life chapter ahead.

If you’re a fan of fairytales and fantasy, and wanting a refreshing read that will have you as head-over-heels for its characters as Cinderella was when she ran away from the ball, look no further than this magical book! It is an IRIDESCENT read, one might say…

Personally, I have always loved the story of Cinderella. When I was younger, I remember making my big sister watch A Cinderella Story every weekend for months because I was so in love with it. Even now, it probably goes down in history as one of my all time favorite movies.

So basically, I have a soft spot in my heart for Cinderella retellings. Let me go ahead and say that I am giving this book 5 STARS because I absolutely loved it. LOVED it.

When writing a retelling of a story, things can often be predictable and it can be hard to really make it unique and your own, but I think Brianne Wik handled this challenge with grace and incredible creativity. She truly took a timeless classic and created her own beautiful story with it.

Unlike the original story, in this story, we actually see a love triangle! I know I am already gushing about this book, but I need to do it a little more. Brianne wrote this love triangle beautifully! Most of the time when I read a love triangle, there is always one of the love interests that I like less than the other and so I ways make my mind up rather quickly on who the heroine should end up with. For the first time, I couldn't choose! Liam and Prince Ryker are both such incredibly well written characters that I actually fell in love with both! They are both so sweet and swoon worthy, I am so happy Brianne is in charge of deciding who Evelyn will end up with and not me, because I would be asking for both! If you love beautifully heart-wrenching love triangles, YOU NEED THIS BOOK.

Evelyn is such an incredible character as well (I know, I just spent a while gushing over the boys, so I should probably talk about the heroine :P ). To endure the treatment she received from her family, and then still be so morally strong and sweet, she is just incredible. Brianne Wik did such a great job developing her as a character that I actually feel like I know her.

Also, if you are a musical nerd like me, there is a small Easter egg hidden in this book! When I read it, I had to ask Brianne if I was right, and I was, and now I love Brianne even more!

I am genuinely so excited to see what comes next in this story and to keep up with Brianne Wik's future work as well. I really feel like she is an incredible up and coming author!

Thank you to Brianne for providing me with an ARC of this book!

Thank you so much to Brianne Wik for giving me an ARC copy of this book! I had SUCH a great time reading it!

Brianne Wik (@briannewik) has mood boards for each character on her Instagram, and a Q&A on her stories with each one as well! I feel like this really shows Brianne’s talent and passion as an author: each character feels like his/her own person living in the story, and not just someone plopped there to fulfill a plot element. Reading her posts also really helped the characters come alive as I was reading the story. So, I would highly recommend checking out @briannewik on Instagram before/while reading this book!

One Iridescent Night is a debut novel, the first book in a new trilogy, and a Cinderella retelling. Brianne Wik did an amazing job of capturing the important moments and the essence of the original Cinderella story, while changing certain elements to add more depth. I found the characters to be vibrant, complex, and endearing. I truly had a blast getting caught up in the plot twists and the romance(s). I couldn’t put it down, and it was such a fun time!

This book also reminded me A LOT of The Selection series. It has a similar vibe and addictive quality. If you loved that series, you should definitely read this book.

I cannot wait to read the sequel to One Iridescent Night! If this is just Brianne’s first book, I cannot wait to see what she does in the future.

5 stars!

3.5 stars.

I've been eager to read this book since I found it here on Goodreads and it was good. There are some content things I did not like but as for the plot and characters, they were well done! I liked Evy and though I can't relate to some of the things she is experiencing, she was still a relatable main character.

Here are my messy thoughts on the romance... First off, I had read some reviews that both of the men in the love triangle were lovable and hard to choose between. I guess I could see how some might think this but I had no trouble choosing between the two (though I still wonder if there should even be romance, at least in the first book). The other contender is still a good guy.....somewhat but his past and rakish personality did not endear him to me. I'm hopeful he will change but it doesn't seem like he wants to... I honestly think he seems a little clingy and his attraction toward Evy seemed forced and based on appearances. I guess some of his rakish behavior makes sense considering who his family is... In the end, it's just the content that has affected the way I view things though this character still has some good qualities!

As for side characters, I liked Evy's maids and Becca was such a fun addition to the story! She was funny (though she did have some inappropriate jokes). One thing that surprised me was the villain. He was so freaky and disgusting! You just don't know what he's going to do or even who he really is.

One thing I loved was when Evy is running into the forest and is brought to the meadow. The scene had some beautiful imagery and description.

Overall this was a good book that I did enjoy for the most part! The only reason I rated it so was because I struggled with the content. Though it is partly my fault for not doing the proper research to find that this book was not marketed as clean. I would still like to see how the next book goes.

CW: There is a warning about abuse and PTSD being present in the book. There were a few swears. There is some passionate kissing. There are more than a few sexual implications. There are mentions of infidelity. There is a character who is a womanizer and is said to have done sexual things, though it is glossed over.

I absolutely loved this book! I regret not reading it the moment it came out but at the same time I am kicking myself for not waiting for the next book. It was beautifully written and I must thank Brianne Wik for including a tigger warning at the beginning of the book. Evy is a stong and inspiring young woman and I can't particularly speak to how well her PTSD was written but I thought it was clear but not overpowering. I appreciated that she was portrayed as more than just her PTSD. I also must say how much I love Ryker and Liam. I honestly don't know how I'd choose which one if I were Evy, they are both amazing men who I would very much like to marry. They are kind and they understand that Evy will talk to them when she wants to. So much in literature, we read about men who are so pushy and can't allow the woman to be away from them and this was so refreshing. And don't get me started on the icon that is Becca. She is hilarious and I love a woman who isn't afraid of speaking her mind.

I was surprised at how quick of a read this book was. I started reading it when I went to bed and I had it finished in 3 hours! I literally could not put it down no matter how many times my mom told me to go to bed.

I must also give a big thanks to Kathryn Marie for telling me I should read this book because boy she was so right.

This is now one of my favorite books and I can't wait to read what happens next! Lots of love!

INTRIGUED.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

I’ll be the first person to say love triangles aren’t really my thing. I have to be in the right mood to deal with the drama that arises inevitably when so many parties are involved. I have had this sitting on my kindle for months and the mood hit and HERE WE ARE. I CAN’T DECIDE WHO I LIKE MORE.

I feel like both of the love interests are balanced well. I’m kind of waiting for one of them to snap (more or less) and to see some differentiation within Ryker and Liam. I’m hoping with the expansion of plot in the next book we’ll see some tough decisions made and that will give both of them larger character dynamics.

Evy was a good FMC. She’s on the softer side (nothing wrong with that! Just a note) and also carries that strength too. Going through hell and back and being able to find hope and mercy too is a pretty incredible feat.

I don’t know the last time I read a Cinderella retelling. With that fact I really liked this one! There’s clear allusions, yet it strays enough to keep things interesting and not a worn down fairy tale. I am very much interested enough to see how book two goes.

Overall audience notes:
- Fantasy Romance
- Language: very little
- Romance: kisses + very light innuendo
- Violence: medium
- Trigger/Content Warnings: domestic abuse, child abuse, whipping, loss of loved ones (on and off page)

ENGLISH REVIEW BELOW:

In this book, the author offers us more than a simple rewrite of the tale of Cinderella. She takes inspiration from it and creates a new one!
¤
When the clock strikes twelve, the magic is just beginning.
Between her cruel family, the loss of her mother, and the unexpected departure of her best friend Liam, young Evelyn was forced to endure a life full of loneliness, anxiety and mistreatment.
Seven years later, seventeen-year-old Evelyn discovers that one magical night can shift everything she thought she knew.
Reunited with an all-grown-up (and oh-so-handsome) Liam, Evelyn finds herself unexpectedly introduced to her mysteriously magical grandmother that she never knew she had, and the dashing Prince Ryker, that she never thought she’d like. Caught between love and fear, Evelyn is thrust into a world she’s never known, with new threats she never expected and new changes she doesn’t understand.

To begin with, I must say that the author was able to catch me into her book from the first lines. I was sensitive to her writing style which I found quite simple, easy to read and yet poetic and beautiful.
At the very beginning, I greatly recognized the Cinderella tale in this writing. The author had added some new and interesting things, but I was wondering where we were going in the story. Then, it wasn't long before I was surprised at this turn of events. All of a sudden, the pace of the story picked up and I discovered a new story, quite different from the original tale.
Through her text, the author will deal with several themes that I found interesting and that moved me. There are passages about domestic abuse, intergenerational transmission, the loss of a loved one, grieving and waiting for a lost love. Honestly, I had tears in my eyes as the text was beautiful despite the harsh themes present in this book. The text wasn’t at all heavy on the contrary. The author seemed to have chosen her words and sentences well so that it wouldn't block the reading and serve the story. I admire the character of Evelyn for what she went through and the behaviors she managed to have in this story.
Usually, I'm not fan of love triangles because I can't imagine them or they're too cliché, not developed enough… Well, I have to say that hasn't been the case here at all! The love triangle is very present but it’s so well done that it seems completely believable to me and I didn’t know who to choose between the two suitors. Should Evelyn go back to her first love? Or can she afford to turn to someone new? Really, I was torn and wanted to choose both haha!
¤
In short, the author has made an interesting, original and surprising retelling of Cinderella! The themes that she raised through her text really appealed to me and her characters convinced me. Although I would have liked a little more development on the universe level, I had a very pleasant reading time.

⭐️Some of the sentence structures kinda weirded me out, but it wasn’t too twisted.

⭐️ The setting could’ve used some more descriptions to help with the picture building.

Always up for a good retelling! This one was emotional and a little traumatic, I think it added to depth of how hard the main character's life was and how wonderful it was to get out of it for a night, just like Cinderella. I was engaged the whole time! I am a sucker for love triangles so I zoomed through it so fast and was impatiently waiting for the next book to come out! Highly recommend!
