Winterfell Academy #1

The Price of Silence

Rate this book
From Elle Mae comes an exciting new bully reverse harem that will feed all your paranormal bisexual fantasies. Join us in this journey into a magical world filled with witches, demons, curses, and lies that will forever change the path of one girls life.

I am Rosie Miller and at the age of ten, I was cursed.

Because of my parents' debt, I was forced into silence and now every word, every laugh, was a weapon used against me.

By nineteen I had come to understand that I would have no choice but to follow in my parents' footsteps. Get a soul-sucking job reserved for low-levels like me, keep my head down, and die alone.

That was until I got a letter one day welcoming me to the most prestigious demon academy in the entire country.

I knew that when I opened that letter, it was too good to be true. There was no way after thousands of years of separation between high-levels and low-levels that I would ever be given such a golden opportunity.

Meeting them only proved my suspicions to be correct.

A bloodthirsty gangster.

A child of a high-ranking demon official with a penance for blackmail.

And last but not least a witch who seems to be called by the power my curse exudes.

Becoming tangled with them will probably be the most reckless thing that I have ever done in my life, but will it be worth finally breaking my curse after nine years?

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was really excited for this book because it is marketed as LGBTQIA, New Adult, Sci Fi & Fantasy.

I am so sorry to say that I did not enjoy this book.
The triggers warnings are: lack of consent, sexual assault, rape, bullying, sexism, blood play, self-harm, toxic relationships, domestic violence, and death.

The main character Rosie consistently did not give consent and gave verbal cues such as “no and not now." It is important to note just because a book is labeled 18+ doesn’t give it a free pass to add the following trigger warnings mentioned above. There was no discussion between the characters about these actions/events and they happened and that was that. I really wanted to DNF this book, but I pushed through to provide this review.

Mixed- bully romance and family betrayal

I don’t like bully romances…so I was disappointed in the way this went. I thought it would be a perfect bi-harem with and interesting cast instead it was about a bunch of bullies of all kinds fighting over the heroine like a piece of meat.

Disappointed- heroine and summary sounded good, but the heroine needed true friends not fake ones.

Rosie Miller is cursed. Like, literally cursed. On her birthday 9 years ago, a witch cursed her as retribution for her parents' crime. This curse manifests in the form of cuts or bruises whenever Rosie makes audible noise. When she receives an invitation to attend the prestigious Winterfell Academy, her parents push her to step out of her comfort zone and accept. However, as a low-level demon, she's already seen as an outcast by the students at the Academy, and there's little hope of that perception changing.

When Rosie begins at Winterfell, she lets the entire school believe she is mute, as it's easier than risking the stigma associated with being cursed by a witch. Unfortunately, on her first day at the Academy, she encounters a friend group unlike any other. The trio consists of Eli (a gangster with a secret soft side), Rae (a high-level demon with a penchant for blackmail), Daxton (a witch who seems to be just a tad obsessed with the magic of Rosie's curse), and his familiar Amr (who cuddles up to Rosie every chance he gets). This trio offers to help Rosie understand (and potentially break) her curse. The sexual tension between the four of them is off the charts, making it incredibly easy for the lines to be blurred.

I did enjoy that this book featured LGBTQIA+ characters and did not invalidate the bisexual identity. I also should mention that this book does have a lot of erotic passages, which do feel a tad gratuitous at first, but as the book continues and the reader gets to know the characters, then they become more interesting and engaging. I found the writing engaging and honestly blew through the book itself. The plot twist and cliffhanger for this book did manage to surprise me, which I commend Mae for, as I can typically suss out those things. If you're a fan of the bully-to-lovers trope and the reverse-harem trope, this is the book for you. I would also definitely recommend this book for fans of authors like Meka James.

It is worth noting that this book features themes and scenes of sexual assault, gore, death, toxic and abusive relationships, and violence. Be aware of these triggers prior to moving forward with reading.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I will be reading Elle Mae's other book, Contract Bound, while I wait for Winterfell Academy Book 2.

Overall rating: 4/5

This is the number one on my list for the drama alone - like what is happening?

This does not mean it is good just on how engaging I found the book. However as it is on the list no more than 3 stars are allowed.

Not bad. Hated that it ended on cliff hanger. So many content warnings are very very applicable here Undecided about continuing tbh.. NGL there was a review that said this was all porn no plot and I was disappointed that there was actually a plot. Hmph.

Went in expecting a lot less than what it gave lol.

The cover threw me off but after one of my booksta friends read this book and gave it a 5 star, I had to see what was so good about it.

There were a handful of grammar issues and editing problems but that aside, here's my review.

I loved the diversity in the book. And really love how Rosie's future harem isn't just straight people. (No offence if you're straight. I'm just bored of harem never having an lgbtq rep.)

The ending left me speechless and I'll probably start the next book soon just to see how all this ends.

A standout for many reasons, this is going to be my next highly-recommended read to my bookish friends for sure!
RH is rife with mm, but ff is so sparse that it's hard to come by without searching explicitly for it. This book runs with 2 ff couplings and tosses in a male to round it off. From the relationship perspective, this starts off shaky and hesitant. It makes sense, given the female lead's character and that this is a plot-heavy series already from book one. I love it!
My only points of contention are relatively minor. I wish the pacing allowed for more fleshing out of the plot. I get that it had a lot to do, and it wasn't exactly a short story. However, I think it would have helped with my second point - the female lead is a bit meh. Quick to let others direct her and make decisions for her, I'm hoping that the next book picks up where it ended for her decisiveness.
I'm keen to keep travelling in this world of demons, witches, humans and science.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THE BOOK
- the plot is interesting (witches, demons/angels, familiars, magic, secret world)
- writing is good disregarding that the tone in some parts are not really age-appropriate
- the spice is piping hot 🌶🌶🌶🌶

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK
- At first, I got confused because the tone used in writing is more fit for YA but the content is for 18+. I felt conflicted because it doesn't feel right.
- some key characters were introduced hastily/they didn't have enough integration into the plot to make them seem important.
- the main characters went MIA in the most crucial part of the plot.
- the MC is frustratingly slow to take hints - sometimes it's not even hints but literal in-your-face facts but blind to see because she'd rather be clueless than face truths.
- the plot started to actually roll in the middle of the book which is frustrating because just when it's just starting to get interesting, the book ends.
- THE BOOK ENDS WITH A CLIFFHANGER
- Bully romance that is borderline sexual assault - it feels illegal.

The plus here is that I still want to read the next book in the series because it does sound good so far.

PLEASE DO READ TRIGGER WARNINGS BECAUSE IT HAS QUITE A FEW!

2.5 stars. I was excited to read a PNR RH with a bisexual lead and multiple female LIs, and the premise sounds like an unusual take on paranormal academy stories. I was disappointed. I probably would have DNF’d if this wasn’t an arc, but around the 50% mark it got a little bit better. I went into it expecting more hurt comfort, and was surprised by the level of bully romance. I enjoy bully romance when I’m in the mood for it, but this didn’t quite scratch that itch for me with the level of dubcon, ongoing bullying and lack of relationship building.

On the positive side, I enjoyed the characters. It didn’t take long for me to warm up to Daxton as my favorite LI (anyone who knows the importance of a good coffee fix is always a winner in my book!). Rae and Eli were also intriguing LIs that’s didn’t fall into your standard trope character models and I want to know more about their pasts. The steamy scenes are enjoyable and largely FF.

The world building is a little confusing and sporadic and left me with a lot of unanswered questions that made the somewhat chaotic plot less compelling. Unlikely I’ll continue with this series. Thank you #Netgalley and Victory Editing for the arc. #ThePriceofSilence

I DNFed this book halfway through but wanted to share my thoughts.

Overall the idea of the book sounded great, but I was quickly disappointed. From basically the beginning we had a main character that was self harming. The consent is iffy at best. The characters are abusive. A bunch of stuff is poorly explained or not explained at all before it becomes important. And the writing itself isn't wonderful. For example, Daxton's first chapter felt like it said the word magic almost every sentence. And Matt spoke almost too formally in my opinion. Definitely heed the trigger warnings before reading this. I know others really enjoyed this book but it was making me uncomfortable. The queer RH is what made me so excited about this book but to see it built on bullying, abuse, and sexual assault is very disappointing.

I was very excited for this book for multiple reasons - the premise is cool and it included members of the LGBTQIA+ community. But it was just very, very confusing. The writing is convoluted and missing information. I had to read sentences and paragraphs multiple times to grasp what was being said (and even then I didn’t get it sometimes). I think the author has a great start, but these definitely needed an editor and some rework to be written a little more clearly.

Alright not sure about this one guys. As a MC I think Rosie is pretty well annoying like I am not rooting for her at all nor do I really care what happens to her unfortunately. Finished the first book and found it was a 5 book series???? There’s no way my attention can be kept I’m sorry I think this is a DNF series for me lol

The plot is a mess, with more holes than Swiss cheese, and the world-building is convoluted in how it’s described (simple in actuality, but the way this is written, it’s hard to understand for a long, long time and the plot/logic holes just make it worse). The sentence structure and punctuation are also some of the worst I’ve seen.

On to the next one!

I don’t know if I’m mad or just ready to go to war for Rosie.

You know when a book gives you so many emotions that it’s a good one. Let’s be real, I have so many mixed feelings right now. I want to scream. I want to yell. I want to cry. Just ugh. I’m trying to process where to begin.

Rosie has had a terrible curse for many years now… and I don’t know how she does it. Not only does she have a curse but she has no one on her side. This is where I get mad. I hate the way everyone treats her. I hate the way people bully her, act like her friend, and push her around. I want to scream and just tell Rosie to light it all up… cause we all know she has the power.

With twists and turns, I wanted to come through this book and just fight everyone. Then there were times that I just wanted the facade to crack. I found myself wanting Amir to come and cuddle with me. I honestly could say that he was my favorite character throughout the whole book and I was waiting for him the whole time to shift and scare Rosie.

I cannot wait to dive into the next book because now I have to know what happens next. I can only hope that Rosie pushes forward and knocks everyone else down.

Rounding this up to 3 stars (from 2.5 stars) because my main issue with the book was the writing style. If the writing style was more polished and my cup of tea I would have enjoyed the book a lot more. I also did not like the pacing of this book. I did really like the premise of the book and the beginning did a good job of hooking the readers in. The worldbuilding I enjoyed, it just kind of hit a plateau in the middle of the book and didn't pick up until the end which didn't really help the pacing.

At times the characters felt a little immature for their age. I'm also so salty about Matt's ending in the book. Like I really loved Matt. Daxton and Amr too. I'm not sold on anyone else though (except MAYBE Eliza if she gets her stuff together). I think the story has promise, I just didn't like the execution majority of the time. I'm willing to give the second book a shot though, it seems more plot driven and I'm definitely invested in Daxton and Amr now.

CW: consent issues, sexual assault, sexism, blood play, SH, domestic violence, death.

Rosie Miller has been cursed in punishment for her parents' crime. She is a low-level demon who is harmed whenever she makes a noise. When she enters Winterfell Academy, she lets everyone believe she's a mute, but she quickly finds an unlikely trio who befriend her.

This book is a bully-to-lovers story, which isn't for everyone. I appreciated the recognition of bisexual identities, which are often invalidated in romance books, even LGBTQIA+ novels. The cliffhanger at the end took me aback, and I thought it was well-written.

Some parts of the book felt tonally off - like it was written for a Young Adult audience at times with a definitely not-YA appropriate storyline. I do not think I will read the next in the series - I'm by no means prudish in my reading choices but this one felt like it pushed the boundaries of what was appropriate and what wasn't.

This book took me by complete surprise! It was SO GOOD! Rather than my usual review let me just hit you with some of the best/coolest aspects of this book
1. The magic system. The way that magic is exchanged, replenished, expelled, everything. So unique and very very interesting
2. The FMC is Cursed so any noise she makes causes her pain which is why she is mute. Throughout the book multiple characters utilize sign language to communicate as well as some other super cool means
3. There is so much going on and the plot is way deeper than I imagined it would be. There is a very intriguing story here and one that builds really well
Overall I really enjoyed it!

I thought the book was interesting and very compelling!

The characters and plot were mostly well-written, though the rules of this world were a bit confusing (I'm writing this after reading the first 3 books and I'm still a little confused). But overall it was a good read.

My only qualm is that the characters seem to go back and forth a lot on their attraction to each other and it gets a bit frustrating at points.

This was a great quick-read! You got sucked into the plot easily, and I loved the main character. The spice was great, the consent-issues were not, but by the end I think that had been resolved. I loved the most of the "spicy time" was f/f and accurate. I did immediately borrow the sequel next, because I am invested now.

This is the first bully romance that I’ve read in years. And I was a huge fan of this. It reminded me how much I actually do like fully romance. However it is not for everyone. It’s right up my alley: bisexual relationships, fantasy elements, and masc/ butch women. It was such a fun read and it’s so hard to find books like these, I already pre-ordered the third book!

So different and so intriguing! The world building is confusing, but the mystery of it is what causes you to keep reading. The relationships are so different from normal RH books, but it’s refreshing and exactly what I was looking for! Excited to start the 2nd book now.

Fantastic read

Very engaging read and wonderful storyline! There were quite a few typos but they were easy to overlook. Things did feel a tad rushed in some parts but overall the book was well balanced and follows a great plot that leaves you on the edge of your seat and trying to fit the pieces together.

This is the better version of Church. there is ff activity but surprisingly no fm action. I was waiting for a group scene with everyone but that never came really. still trying to figure out who the permanent love interests are though.

I really enjoyed this book and am soooo beyond happy that the other books in the series are out.

Steamy college supernatural romance. I'd probably only give it 🌶️🌶️🌶️ outta 5 on the spice scale (more like 2 1/2) because while the scenes were great, I wanted more.
The characters were interesting, but it felt like Rosie had too many personality shifts for me.
The world building was decent, though I'm hoping for more in the sequels.

In terms of spicy levels, I give it a 2.5/5. When they're there, they're sinful...but it's very sparse. Not me complaining, just saying it's not as spicy as advertised on Tiktok. However, that does not mean it's not a good book. The plot is solid and I like the characters. I will definitely be reading the next book, the cliffhanger is too good not to :)
