The Creeping Void: Terror on the Highlands

Rate this book
Beware the Void.

Since the Void descended, the Earth has become a twisted nightmare of its former self where something ancient stalks the hills and valleys.

One last bastion of humanity is the Scottish Highlands where things have devolved into a Jacobean clan structure. Technology has been corrupted and the use of it outlawed.

Tom and Willie, two hapless clansmen, find their simple lives disrupted when a strange girl crosses their path. Unwittingly, they are led to a group of ‘white coats’ working on unlocking the secrets of the Void.

With time running out, they are forced to choose sides or risk the world.

The Creeping Void, is the lovecraftian inspired distopian novella you didn't know you needed.

This is just one of eight epic stories that delve into the grim possibilities of future civilisations rent asunder by disaster and changed forever. This is not our world. This is the world AFTER.

An eight-part mini-series.

Tim Mendees is a horror writer from Macclesfield in the North-West of England that specialises in cosmic horror and weird fiction. A lifelong fan of classic weird tales, Tim set out to bring the pulp horror of yesteryear into the 21st Century and give it a distinctly British flavour. His work has been described as the love-child of H.P. Lovecraft and P.G. Wodehouse and is often peppered with a wry sense of humour that acts as a counterpoint to the unnerving, and often disturbing, narratives.
Tim has had over eighty published short stories and novelettes in anthologies and magazines with publishers all over the world. He also has five novellas and a short story collection on sale with more coming soon.
When he is not arguing with the spellchecker, Tim is a goth DJ, crustacean and cephalopod enthusiast, and the presenter of a popular web series of live video readings of his material and interviews with fellow authors. Tim is also a co-host of the Innsmouth Book Club podcast. He currently lives in Brighton & Hove with his pet crab, Gerald, and an army of stuffed octopods.

Tim Mendees and Eerie River Publishing have done it again. The Creeping Void is a fast-paced, action-packed story that yanks the tension up within the first few pages and doesn't let up until the very end. The characters are full of life (as I've come to expect from Mendees' work), and there were a couple of memorable quips that made me laugh. Short, sharp and immersive, this was a really entertaining read that kept me on the edge of my seat.

I received an advanced reader copy, and am leaving this review voluntarily.

A short read with everything you could ever want from a post apocalyptic short read. Characters that are brilliantly flawed and trying to find a way to survive. Mendees influences and supplication to the elder gods. Brilliantly timed humour that helps to balance the heart pumping horror and deliciously decrepit descriptions. I can’t give this anything less than a five. Brilliant work.

First Impression
I didn’t hear about this book until an announcement was made on Tim’s Facebook page, but when I did I knew it was going to be an interesting read. The cover is awesome with the dark clouds and the cabin sitting there in the open. I was immediately drawn to it.
I was provided with an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Tim and Eerie River for the opportunity.

Meet the characters
Willie and Tom — in the introduction, when we meet these two things seem very bleak for them. I grew rather attached to these two, I will admit..
Mary — a strong female character who wields a blade with precision accuracy
Sam — historian
Viking — the one who carries high powered guns, the muscle of the group
David — computer geek
Malcolm — technical support
****
Overall Plot
The world as we know it, is gone. Society has gone backwards with technology. The characters encounter Lovecraftian horrors along the way to their destination and accomplish their mission. Tom is apprehensive and untrusting as the story progresses. The group tries to work together to find out what started this “Void.”
Tim has paced this story very well, there is never a dull moment. He kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to quickly get to the next page to see what was coming.

The following excerpt made me laugh. “Yes, it’s not the best tea, I’m afraid,” Sam shrugged, before plonking another sugar cube in his mug. “The tea bags are about a hundred years past their ‘best before’ date. The sugar will help.”
****
This book was definitely worth the time to read it. I can’t wait to receive my hard copy so I can hold this treasure in my hands I have to give him 5 stars for this book. If Tim’s story is an indication of what is to come from future stories in this series— I can’t wait to dive in further.

Great characterization and relatable characters combined with a smartly paced story and plenty of action to go along with it. It’s a dark and fun ride for anyone looking to explore both dystopian and lovcraftian type stories.

The awesome people of Eerie River Publishing were kind enough to send me Tim Mendees's 'The Creeping Void' for review.

''The Creeping Void' is part of a post-apocalyptic series of eight short stories (soon to be released by Eerie River Publishing) that depict a tragic future for the human race, shattered by disaster and altered forever.

The Earth is never the same since the Void descended. Diminished to rubble and taken aback centuries, the planet resembles a twisted version of its own image as technology has been corrupted and the use of it outlawed.
Earth is now a place, where ancient predators stalk and hunt their pray.

The story follows Tom and Willie, two clansmen at the Scottish Highlands, whose simple lives take a wild turn, upon stumbling across a strange girl while scavenging for old technology items.

This acquaintance will eventually lead to a nefarious group of ‘white coats', fascinated with unlocking the secrets of the Void.

With their lives being at stake, they are forced to choose a side. A choice that will ultimately define the future..

The Creeping Void, is a lovecraftian inspired distopian novella.
A weird and beautifully crafted blend, between 'Mad Max' and 'Annihilation' with 'The Highlander' and 'Predator' undertones.
Are you intrigued? You should be!!

The author manages to weave all the right elements that make a story grand, unique and utterly phenomenal. The writing is tight and beautiful with the characters really coming out alive through the pages.

A well-written and ingeniously constructed fast paced thrill-ride.
This is highly recommended.
A great addition to an already fantastic anthology.

Tim Mendees does a superb line in old-fashioned, pulpy horror stories, and The Creeping Void is a perfect example of that. This novelette manages to pack in a lot of action and detail, as well as a unique view of the apocalypse. Despite being a short read, there is an interesting and varied cast of characters, clear and present consequences to the characters actions AND inaction, and homages galore for the Lovecraft fans, as has become Tim's signature style. It's a gory, grimy, visceral, exciting pelt through an eldritch Armageddon and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a short, fun read. Also, I'll just say PlayStation Vita and leave it at that.

The Creeping Void mixes the Cthulhu Mythos with post-apocalyptic survival. Think of something along the line of At the Mountains of Madness meets The Rain. Being a fan of Lovecraft, I appreciated references to the Cthulhu Mythos, such as shoggoths and Nyarlathotep. Luckily, he also has his own take of the Mythos and adds some new aspects to it that I won't spoiler in this review.
Tim Mendees crafted an interesting and visually-stunning tale that helps the reader teleport their mind to the Scottish Highlands that's been ravaged by a storm-like terror known as the Void. Despite that, its not overdone with description and details, but rather he uses simple, basic wording that leaves enough to allow the imagination to run wild. Therefore, its a quick read thats good for those like me who usually don't have a lot of time to read longer works.
So, I give this an easy five stars! I do hope Tim expands on this story into a larger work, as there's so much more that could be done within this literary universe. Like, maybe have stories that take place in other parts of the world and introduce more Lovecraftian elements.

I read The Creeping Void as part of the After anthology. It is a good story with an interesting take on the near complete destruction of our world. A few engaging characters work together in hopes of changing this fate. At every turn, there was a creature ready to attack, or, worse, humans who were sure they were doing the right thing by trying to stop them.
