Madison Steele answers the phone and talks to her sister as her sister is run off the road. Her sister Leah says she has uncovered evidence that the pharmaceutical company she works for has faked information claiming a drug is safe when it’s actually not. Tucker Reed is a Canadian police constable who is investigating Leah’s death. He just also happens to be Madison’s ex-high school boyfriend. They are both put on a team investigating Leah’s death and her claim about the pharmaceutical company. Both have secrets that the other don’t know that could change their lives forever. Can these two find a way to be open with each other and trust God to give them a 2nd chance at love?

I really enjoyed this story. I loved all the action. I was drawn in from the very first line. Darlene Turner has a way of making these characters come alive. I enjoyed Madison and Leah’s story. They had a beautiful sisterly bond. I hated that Leah had to die just when Madison was getting to know her. I enjoyed Madison and Tucker. They both tried to fight their feelings about the other. They each had secrets that they thought would change how the other would feel about them. Madison doesn’t believe in God. Tucker maybe has a disease that’s hereditary which took the life of his father. Both have to open up and they really need to trust. I like that this book had a few twists. It will keep you guessing. Most of all, I appreciate that there is an epilogue. It’s my favorite part of a book and I get so happy when an author includes one.

After receiving a chilling phone call moments before her sister's fatal car crash, Madison knows that Leah's death wasn't an accident. Police constable Tucker Reed, Madison's high school sweetheart is placed on the case, can they catch the killers before their deadly pattern continues?

An action packed read, that starts on a sad note. Her sisters death brings Tucker back into Madison's life, as she struggles to make sense of the twisted web that her sister was trying to uncover. I liked Madison and Tucker's relationship, and how Tucker encourages her to not give up on her faith. They have great interaction and chemistry throughout.

Overall a well written, and highly entertaining read, with great characters and emotional depth. Madison is going through a lot of tough things, dealing with a lot of loss, and I really liked how Tucker was there for her and supportive throughout. There is a lot going on, the plot is well balanced, between the strong backstory and the current danger. A fantastic fast paced read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

"They're after me!"

These aren't words you ever want to hear, and Madison Steele soon learns that her sister's frantic phone call has ended with the worst possible scenario. In her newest book, Lethal Cover-Up, author Darlene L. Turner uses these words and many unforeseen circumstances to send readers on a frantic, thrilling, and often dangerous ride. She adds a heroine and hero who are both strong and vulnerable, gives them a previous relationship that ended in pain and disillusionment, and then throws them together to try to stop a murderous drug ring! How can Madison and Tucker Reed ever hope to succeed, if they can't forget their past hurts and misunderstandings?

Lethal Cover-Up is hard to put down, because of its fascinating characters, family secrets, and unending twists and turns, and Turner also includes hope, faith, and a second chance at romance. I recommend it to all who enjoy romantic Christian suspense.

I received a copy of this book from the author. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

Lethal Cover-Up by Darlene L. Turner is a stand-alone Love Inspired Suspense novel. Border patrol officer Madison Steele is determined to prove her sister’s fatal car accident was in fact murder. Someone is trying to cover-up the fact that a big pharmaceutical company is distributing tainted drugs. Now they’re after Madison. Working with Police Constable Tucker Reed, Madison plans to expose the company. But, will they both survive that long? From the first sentence to the last it was non-stop action. Twists and turns, bullets flying everywhere, and a plot twist at the end; this story has it all! Madison and Tucker were a great team.

After recently finding her half-sister, Madison is devastated when Leah is murdered. Who had done it and why? What had she discovered that now people were trying to kill her too. Could Tucker keep her safe? One thing after another kept happening. Would they be able to find out who was after them before it became too late? Action-packed from beginning to end with strong determined characters. A must read.

LETHAL COVER-UP by Darlene L. Turner is the fabulous story of Madison Steel and Tucker Reed that will have you turning pages as you try to solve the mystery, catch the bad guys and watch as the quenched romance of two youths rekindles into a true love they both want but are fearful must never be.

The book starts with Border patrol officer Madison Steele getting a frantic call from Leah Peters, the sister she didn’t even know she had until a few months ago, telling her that “they” were after her and used the word “tainted” in reference to the pharmaceutical company she worked for. There’s a crash and then silence. Madison lost her sister in an accident initially thought to be caused by faulty brakes. Madison had but two goals – prove her sister was murdered and find out why and by whom.

Emerson Peters, a very influential politician and Leah’s father, has Canadian police constable Tucker Reed assigned to the case to find out what happened to his daughter. Can Tucker, who once had his heart crushed by Madison, remain objective even though just the sight of her brings back so many feelings? He must because after finding out about his father’s medical condition and not knowing if he is a carrier, he’s determined to stay single. When attempts are made on Madison’s life, he knows he will do anything to keep her safe as well as help her to find the answers she so desperately seeks.

After turning her back on the boy she loved after he had told her he had become a Christian, she knew he would never understand how she wrestled with her ideas of faith or the lack thereof. How can there be a God that would allow her so much hurt and pain like the death of her parents when she was so young? He sure wouldn’t understand some of the hateful things she had done out of pain and anger. After her finance died of a heart attack on her wedding day, Madison is not ready to open her heart up to that hurt again. She may never be. But every time she’s around Tucker she has feelings returning for her first love that seem to have grown with time. Does he feel that tingle, like an electric current, when they accidently brush against each other?

Between them, can Madison and Tucker find the clues Leah left for them and figure out who’s behind the tainted drugs out on the streets that’s killing people? In the process, can they keep those they love from harm or from dying? Will the man behind the corruption, Cicada – the man with the money and power to be pulling all this off, be caught and brought to justice for Leah’s death? Or will Madison and Tucker become other victims to this mastermind?

What will it take for Madison to see that she has to put her trust and faith in God? Will accepting God although not understanding his plans and asking for his help save Madison from certain death and lead her to finding justice and maybe her happily ever after? Will Tucker realize that true love is worth all the sacrifices and unknowns and to deny Madison the chance to make choices is just repeating the mistakes of his father?

Darlene L. Turner has done it again! She has delivered a spine tingling mystery and a wonderful romance all wrapped in a thought provoking faith thread that will have you reading LETHAL COVER-UP all in one sitting because you won’t be able to put it down. This is a must read for anyone that loves a well-executed mystery, a wonderful and sweet romance or just an excellent love inspired book. FIVE STARS for sure!

Wow! Some evil people will stop at nothing to keep their money flow going and their secrets hidden. No matter if innocents are dying. They will threaten anyone to keep the truth of their evil from coming into the light.

This is where Madison Steele, a border patrol officer finds herself. Her sister had a secret that she was going to expose on the pharmaceutical company she worked for. And it cost her her life. Madison is bound and determined to find out what that was and continue her sister's mission. Expose them. Even if it means working with her once upon a time sweetheart, police officer Tucker Reed.

However, now they have a bull's eye on them as they try to get to the bottom of this medicine and root out the ones that are behind pushing it on an unsuspecting populace.

This was an eye-opening story of medicine and money and those who make a profit no matter how many people are hurt. It certainly is an edge of your seat read.

Excellent story - fast paced suspense with twists and turns that left me breathless.
Darlene did an excellent job of keeping the plot moving.
“Madison and Tucker are stuck in fear but eventually find hope. Hope in the unknown and hope in knowing God is in control and with us—no matter the circumstances. We just need to know where to look.”
“Tucker’s throat constricted, his legs weakening as terror threatened to immobilize him. He leaned against a wall and tried to calm his racing heart. A question niggled his brain. How would they make it out alive?”

This novel has nonstop over the top suspense. Unfortunately, much of it is caused by errors and mistakes, a pet peeve of mine. Tucker and Madi go place after place by themselves, each time with a suspenseful result. I wish I had counted how many times Tucker had to dial 911 when he should have had a team with him in the first place. Tucker is not an astute law officer. After Madi made a suggestion, “He snapped his fingers. Why hadn't I thought of that? Another mistake.” (2251/3450) After several attempts on Madi's life, Tucker lets her go off by herself. Of course, suspense ensues. And then he lets it happen again! Tucker thinks, “Another mistake that may cost Madi her life” (2989/3450) In fact, the villain calls Tucker an idiot. (3026/3450) By the time the novel was over, I had little respect or affection for Tucker, he was so incompetent. I like a capable hero that outsmarts the villain, not the other way around.

This is a suspense filled novel with a good gospel message for readers who don't mind an incompetent hero causing most of the continuous suspense.

They have eyes and ears everywhere.

Wow! You will not set this book aside until you reach the end. The author has done an incredible job of hiding the true perpetrator, leaving the reader with bits and pieces of this and that, but no chance to actually figure out who it is. Accidents that are actually murder, gunshots, explosions, tainted drugs and more will keep your attention long after you reach the end. Seemingly innocuous people and businesses become people and places of interest. Sinister texts are received - is anyone safe from these people?

Madison has lost so much. How can she possibly believe that God is in all things? You just need to know where to look - wise words from her sissy and others around her. But will those threatening texts come true?

This ARC was received through Love Inspired Suspense, Harlequin and CelebrateLit. These impressions and comments are my own and were in no way solicited.

Lethal Cover-Up is a fast-paced, action-packed suspense novel filled with secrets, lies, and deception. I enjoyed all the twists and turns in the story and was kept on the edge of my seat trying to figure out the villains.

The characters are well-developed and I grew to admire Madison's courage. Her struggle with faith rang true and added a nice element to the story, grounding her character in the end.

The ending wrapped everything up nicely and had a few surprises which made for a great story. I can't wait to read the next publication. Highly recommended.

This is a excellent book of discovery and also rediscovery. Darlene brings the characters to life in this story. With real fears and hopes. Madison has had losses and like any normal teenager has handled it wrong. Which Darlene shows us through the way she has grown. The same can be said with Tucker his fears as Darlene shows are real but she shows his growth as well. I like the way Darlene builds the story. With suspense and action. There is also mystery as to who is behind everything which gets solved towards the end. I like the way she weaves her story for she draws you in making it hard to put to the book down. I look forward to her next book. J

As soon as I saw the cover of Lethal Cover-Up by Darlene Turner, I knew wanted to read this story to find out what was happening on this idyllic looking street on what looks like a perfect fall night! And let me tell you, I was not disappointed with the answer!

This story has everything I look for in a romantic suspense story. The first sentence pulls you in, the pacing is perfect, it is filled with action, suspense, twists and turns, and surprising outcomes! There’s also a great second chance romance. I really liked Tucker and Madison together. At first, I thought Madi may be a bit too prickly, but thankfully I was wrong. The faith thread was woven throughout and added a great touch to the story.

Darlene Turner is definitely an author I will recommend. I’m looking forward to reading her next story!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own. The faith thread is medium.

Border Patrol Officer, Maddison Steele could not believe this happened, her sister Leah was dead. Killed in what initially seems to be an accident, she took a curve too fast and lost control. Maddison does not believe that theory. They had just found one another and now she was gone. And from the time they spent together Maddison never saw her drive recklessly. She was killed, now she just had to prove it. While at the crime scene the officer in charge shows up and after a moment she realizes it is the one person she did not expect to see, not sure she wanted to see again after she broke his heart so many years ago.
Constable Tucker Reed, was stunned when he arrives at the scene of a car accident and sees the woman who had broken his heart so many years ago. She broke it off while at the prom. He was stunned and had no idea what happened. Now, he is at the scene of an accident and Maddison tells him who the victim is and that she is her sister.
While working together to solve this crime they realize they still have feelings for one another. But they both harbor a secret that they feel would be a deal breaker for the other one. But the Lord knows what they need and the desires of their hearts. If they get out of God's way they could have another chance at happiness together.

Thank you in advance to the author, Darlene L. Turner, for providing a complimentary copy of the book. A positive review was definitely not required or requested in any way; all words are my own.

Whew! Honestly, I needed to catch my breath after reading this one! This was ONE wild roller coaster ride.

With that said …

In 2020, I participated in a social blitz for Border Breach, as a result I ended up winning the “host” prize from JustRead which was a gift card from the author. And, I should've bought book #1 then. I didn't. But, I did get it earlier this year. I read it prior to the second book.

This this year I ended up on Turner’s “Border Patrol” –> a review/launch team group. I know, I’m part of so many.

Anyway …

Knowing I was going to review Abducted in Alaska, I finally read Border Breach, which was very exciting. It was also book #1 in the Border Patrol series. That introduced the characters for Abducted in Alaska, which was just as exciting as the previous book, if not more so. Tucker and Madison were briefly mentioned in Abducted in Alaska he was mentioned in chapter 6, she in chapter 8, so I kind of knew this book was their story.

While this is a “series” by just a few connections, it really isn’t necessary to read all the books, this truly acts as a standalone book. It is worth noting that the other characters from the previous two books (Border Breach’s Hudson Steeves and Kaylin Poirier; Abducted in Alaska’s Hannah Morgan and Layke Jackson) do not make an appearance in this book nor are they mentioned.

Like the other couples, Madison is a Canadian Border Patrol officer and Tucker is a police constable. I found it a bit interesting all the ladies in this series were CBSA while the guys were police constables.

And, like the previous two books, Turner’s characters are complex. Madison has turned away from God while Tucker is a believer. And, it is easy to see why she has turned away – finding out she was adopted, adoptive parents killed in a crash, an issue with another man … and now? Losing her sister.

Then there are some not-so-savory along with “I just didn’t trust them” characters – Charlotte, Teddy, Annabelle, Emerson, Jenkins, Hyatt, Sam, and Daniel.

And, I was wrong about a few of them.

It is worth noting some (NOT ALL) authors tend to lose momentum as a series goes along. The first book comes out swinging, the second book kinda lags, and the last few? They’re usually waning.

This one? Lethal Cover-Up is one of those “it just keeps getting better and better”. But, this one was a bit much at times. Where to start?

Well, let’s put it this way, this book has no end of action:

Car Accidents (including the one that starts it)

Multiple people dying [pretty sure there was only 5] (one of a drug overdose, so trigger warning there)

Shots Fired (multiple times, multiple suspects)

Explosions (or was that just one …)

Fires!! (2)

Yup, Turner certainly packed all that into 212 pages of the story (it begins on page 7, ends on 219).

I really should’ve expected all that given the cover – intense, grabbed me right off, terrifying. And, it as if you can feel the flames (or is that our 118° high temp). Potential readers are in for a gripping, engaging, emotional, fast-paced read.

Oh, and you might want to grab some tissues, they might be needed for some heart-breaking scenes.

There is also a slight, but recognizable mention of chronic pain. It is slight, but it is definitely a factor because of this book dealing with a pain medication.

Moving on …

Madison has just discovered she had an older half-sister, who ends up killed in a car accident. Which, as we’re all going to learn – it isn’t an accident. That brings Madi face to face with her old high school sweetheart Tucker. Her lack of faith and his having faith in times of a disaster were what caused her to leave him.

Leah’s father is a well-known, and seemingly despised (at least by a few people) politician – Emerson Peters.

Madi knows right away her sister was murdered. A letter in the glove box is addressed to Madi. And, right there, her late sister urges her to come back to God.

Then there is Charlotte, the EMT who arrives on scene. I really disliked her right off. I don’t know if that’s what the author intended – but, that’s honestly what happened. Even Madi has issues and at one point references Elsa (Frozen) and tries to “Let It Go” because of how much the woman flirted with Tucker. And, even at halfway, I was done with Charlotte. I just got tired of her.

Right away Madi and Tucker are led to Leah’s employer – Dolumhart Pharmaceuticals. And, right off there are issues there. Leah apparently found out something about a drug – Morvecet, which seems to be tainted. It’s not only personal for Madi, but Tucker whose mom is taking the drug.

The ending to chapter one (1) had me wondering if I should head to bed. How could I with that ending?

Already I was uneasy when everyone at Dolumhart seemed to know about Madi being Leah’s sister. One woman claimed it was annoying how much Leah talked about her. Always one of those.

Despite Madison’s obvious “well-to-do” status, she works. Turner brought up a good point – if she didn’t, she be judged as spoiled by society.

After an incident with a woman at a beauty salon that Madi frequents, I didn’t like Teddy (Charlotte’s partner) either. Poor Dolly. That’s all I’ll say, and it wasn’t an accident either.

Emerson Peters wants answers in his daughter’s death, and when he mentioned Madi as his step-daughter, I was like her – what is he up to?

Madi gets a package from Leah with some interesting things – and, another mention of “coming back to God”, in addition to a letter from Madi’s birth mother. Really creepy thing – as soon as Madi finishes reading it, Emerson called her. That had me worried. As a result of Leah’s love of Indiana Jones (I’m slightly partial to him), she leaves clues in a treasure map.

Every time the two get a lead, something happens – explosion, shooting, accidents, fires, evidence going missing.

There is hardly anytime for the romance because of the investigation and trying to avoid the henchman (henchmen) for the main baddie who is only known as Cicada (I had my suspicions here). In addition, Madi is holding out because of her departure from God while Tucker has his own reasons for holding out.

And, every time something happens, Madi’s boss Sam was getting worried. I was beginning to wonder about him as well. In addition, I didn’t know whether I was supposed to like Emerson or despise him.

Turner had wonderful surprises, twisty turns, and some unpredictable moments. There were some moments I saw coming as a result of my own feelings and suspicions. The end is predictable since it is a romance, but wow – just getting there is a harrowing journey.

As this is distributed by Love Inspired Suspense, expect mentions of God and prayer along with themes of redemption. While not integral to the plot, they do factor in quite heavily, especially when Leah is reaching out from the beyond to ask Madison to come back to God in certain notes she’s left behind.

This was definitely a “non-stop” can’t put it down book. It was not only pulse-pounding, but I found myself tearing up at times. And, I love how Turner creates fascinating characters whose journey to God begins with their little doubts as well as major events.

The only reason this took a few days to read was because of needing a replacement dryer in my place when mine died the weekend I wanted to read this book. There was a LOT of rearranging needing to be done. Otherwise, books like this are a 1-2 day read. The length of time it took me is in no way a reflection on the author’s writing or this book which is why I made the note I did. I absolutely LOVED the short chapters. It kept me reading “just one more chapter”.

And, another thing I loved was Leah’s birthday of July 28th, which is my mother’s birthday.

I am excited that this series has a fourth (4th) book coming out February/March 2022 which was announced by the author on her Facebook page on July 9th. It will be the last book of the Border Patrol Series.

With that said, I’m very much looking forward to it as well as any future books she has planned. Darlene L. Turner has definitely become one of my MANY “must-read” authors in the romantic-suspense genre. Another “must-read” author is mentioned in this book – DiAnn Mills. I haven’t read her books, but her fans will delight in the mention.

Those who’ve read the previous two books in this series might want to check it out. Those who enjoy a riveting, non-stop read – check this out!

Well this has been some kind of wild ride that I just got off of. My heart was pounding so hard I didn’t know if I was going to be able to stop the adrenaline rush. The author sure knows how to capture the attention of her readers with non stop danger at every curve . I loved the storyline about a pharmaceutical company with greedy people who have no regard for human lives. I couldn’t wait to see where the trail would lead me.

Madison is a very dedicated person to her job and seems to have everything under control in her life. Of course there is that little anger she has with God going on. But overall her life is pretty good until a phone call changes everything. Oh no I’m not telling about the call because that is how Madison finds herself in danger. I will say that her love for her sister is evident and she will not stop til she gets answers to a tragic event.

Teaming up with Madison to track the person who is selling illegal drugs is her old boyfriend Tucker. It must have been a bit awkward for them at first but they sure do make a great team. I loved how they worked together and had each other’s backs. Tucker does try several times to talk to Madison about God, but she isn’t ready to listen. Will she surrender to God or let her prude get in the way?

The author does an exceptional job of keeping Madison and Tucker on their toes as they get closer to the truth. There are several clues they find that help them but as they get closer to solving it, bodies start piling up. They have gotten the attention of someone who is willing to kill to keep their illegal drugs under wraps. Madison is living on the edge as she becomes the target of whoever is behind the drug trafficking.

The ending is one of the best I’ve read in awhile and I was completely not ready for who the criminal or criminals were. I know there were clues throughout the story but for some reason I ignored them. If you are looking for a fast pace suspenseful story with danger, faith and action, look no further. Grab a copy and get ready for a look into what “the love of money” does to people.

Lethal Cover-Up by Darlene L. Turner is the third book in her Border Patrol series, and it was explosive from the first page! The author is fantastic at creating a fast-paced, action-packed story and Lethal Cover-Up is exactly that.
I’m a big fan of second-chance romance, so I enjoyed the familiarity between Madison and Tucker from the get-go. I appreciated the respect Tucker had for Madison’s training and competency while still doing his best to protect her. He’s a true modern-day gentleman, and I enjoyed getting to know him. I also loved how he wasn’t ashamed to share his faith with Madison--including his struggle with doubt. It’s always great to see characters who have a realistic spiritual walk.
Madison endured so many trials throughout her life. I think many people would relate to her faith arc of having fallen away from God due to hardships in life. It’s so easy to let feelings get in the way of obedience, and Madison is a great example of how God can use the hard things to make something new.
The suspense in this novel is fantastic. I loved every second of twisty mystery, heart-stopping danger, and crosses and double-crosses. There are plenty of red herrings to keep you guessing until the end! To me, the romance in this book is just right for the level of action. The slow simmer between Madison and Tucker is perfect!
If you are a fan of Christian Romantic Suspense, you will enjoy this novel. And even though it is part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone. I hope you enjoy it!
I was given a copy of this book by the author with no expectations of a positive review. All opinions are my own.
