A Spirit Seeks Asylum

Rate this book
Cass Donovan is confronted by ghoulish crimes both old and new when a defunct asylum is the site of a fresh murder and a long-hidden injustice . . .

The old abandoned buildings of the Twin Forks Lunatic Asylum have always fascinated and frightened clairvoyant Cass Donovan, but she never dreamed her psychic abilities would be put to the test there. Then the new owner of the site tells her he plans to renovate it and turn it into a boarding school, and he’ll pay Cass handsomely to determine whether the place is haunted! Cass accepts his offer, but her search for hints of old ghosts soon has her looking for clues among the living when the man who hired her turns up dead.

Returning to the shuttered asylum looking for evidence of who may have wanted her client out of the way, Cass stumbles upon signs of yet another murder, even as she’s besieged by an onslaught of haunting voices from the past. When it comes to light that rival real estate developers have been hatching plans of their own for the property, Cass sees no shortage of motives for the murders, but she’ll have to find a way to quiet the disturbing voices from long ago and focus on the here and now, because whoever’s behind the killings has targeted Cass as their next victim . . .

When Cass Donovan was contracted by a developer to determine whether the psychiatric asylum he purchased was haunted, she and her friend, Bee, decided to use the opportunity to film her visit there for her new video log. Unfortunately besides the restless and unhappy spirits already there, she discovered a more recent body. As Cass learns more both from the dead and the living, her own life is put in danger. The Bay Island Psychic series just keeps getting better. As the cornerstone, the close friendships between Cass, Bee and Stephanie illuminate the story. The mystery is plausible with enough twists and red herrings to keep you engrossed. As in the best series, it's the characters and their relationships that keep you coming back. The paranormal element is believable and successfully intertwined with the plot. Definitely recommended for anyone who likes paranormal mysteries and for these who just like a good mystery with believable relationships. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

A Spirit Seeks Asylum is the 6th book in the Bay Island Psychic Mysteries and I found it to be a welcomed addition to the series. What continues to bring me back to this series time and time again are the great characters and the author's writing style. At the heart of this series is the friendship between Cass, Bee, and Stephanie. The friendships have shifted a little over the course of the series with Stephanie now a mom, so this book really showcases the special bond and friendship between Cass and Bee. I think these are friendships that everyone longs to have with a few special people. Also back for this installment are the usual secondary cast of characters (Tank, Luke, Chief Rawlins) along with Cass's friend Simone who comes to the island to assist Cass with this mystery.

I love the paranormal aspect of all the mysteries in this series. This one centers around the murder of a man who owns an old, defunct mental facility with a dark past who hires Cass to determine if it is haunted. Cass needs the work and thinks it will help launch her new vlog so she agrees. While filming at the property, Cass and Bee encounter some eerie events, which eventually lead to the discovery of the victim. Bee is a real trooper in this book, assisting Cass and never leaving her side while they investigate. There are a decent number of suspects to choose from, each with a plausible motive. As Cass and Bee move in on the killer's identity, there is danger and uncertainty. In this series, the police are not dismissive of Cass's abilities. Rather, they seek her out on occasion and when she provides them with clues they believe her and investigate.

I very much enjoy this series and hope that there are more to come. The characters are terrific and the strong friendship between Cass, Bee, and Stephanie, along with the author's terrific writing style, really make this series entertaining. I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher, Beyond the Page Publishing, through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I’ve only read two books total in this series with this book being the second, and I have loved every minute of them. That shows that the author is good at making sure the reader can jump right in and still enjoy the book without having read the others. I also just love the friendship between Bree and Cass, and the relationship between Cass and Luke. They are so good to each other, and he doesn’t really doubt Cass. Add to that the interesting mystery and excellent writing, and you have a great book to spend an enjoyable afternoon with. I can’t wait to read more in this series. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

This is the sixth book in the Bay Island Psychic mystery series.

I always enjoy books in this series and this one was great per normal. I loved watching Cass as she tried to keep her cool during a lot of the trials the ghosts put her through. Lots of Bee in this one which was a bit different but got to admit, I didn’t hate the Bee overload.

The book starts with an innocent question… can this abandoned location be made into a school? Cass finds quite a bit of paranormal activity but before she can put in her recommendations, the man who hired her ends up dead.

Overall a truly great read. Definitely check this one out if you love paranormal types of mysteries. Well worth your time.

If you love a cozy mystery, definitely check this one out.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title. Opinions are completely my own.

Cass, resident psychic on Bay Island, is learning to use her skills when she is offered a large amount of money to find out if an abandoned mental asylum is haunted. Soon, Cass and her bff Bee are investigating a murder after Cass finds a body on the grounds. Cass soon realizes there were more murders at the asylum five years before. Is the same person responsible for all the deaths? And what is the motive?
As soon as I began reading, I was hooked. I liked the characters and the setting, and the mystery was tantalizing. This is the 6th book in the Bay Island Psychic Mystery series, but it works well as a stand-alone. But I will be reading the first five books in the series soon, while hoping for the next in the series.

Full disclosure: I received this novel from netgalley and Beyond the Page in exchange for an unbiased review. Thank you for this opportunity.

In volume 6 in Gregory's successful Bay Island Psychic Mystery series, Cass finds herself worried about expenses during the off season in Bay Island. Readers new to the series will have little trouble identifying the lead characters. Gregory skillfully presents them, without going overboard with their back stories. By now Cass has become more comfortable with her psychic talents, yet she still has some doubts. She is still troubled by the events that brought her back to Bay Island. Her support network, headed by Bee, her stalwart companion. Bee has a lead role here, Luke is off stage for the most part.

Cass' psychic talent is the ability to speak to members of the spirit world. She is also sensitive to the hidden and overt emotions in others. This natural talent was enhanced by her training as a psychiatrist. She is an engaging protagonist. The spirit in question is one who is inhabiting an abandoned Asylum that was built in the 19th century. Cass has been tasked with determining if malevolent spirits or energies would prevent the building from being restored as a boarding school.
Elijah Anderson seems eager for Cass to work for him. His wife Evelyn? Not so much.

Taking this as an opportunity to continue creating a promotional vlog for Cass, Bee joins her at the site. The winter setting, which could be considered another character in the book, contributes to the chill stark nature. Bee is not aware of the sobbing or the feeling of pain and gloom. They both are over taken by a fog like mist, and startled by the sound of a gunshot. A new body lies outside the building. That of Elijah Anderson. Will Cass be next?

Gregory gives us a believable take on the paranormal world without a lot of "woo woo" as Bee would say. I am a new reader of this series and look forward to chasing down the first 5 volumes.

Highly recommended for readers of paranormal mysteries and cozy mysteries alike. The violence is off stage making this suitable for readers of all ages.

This is a series that has never let me down. Cass and her BFF Bee, along with Stephanie and the rest of the recurring cast are, as always, people I would like to call my friends. This time Cass has some money concerns and Bee is helping her to film a vlog to promote her business. In the off season Bay Island isn't raking in the money for her store, Mystical Musings. The location for their filming is not producing anything spooky so they give the old light house a try. No luck but they did get some great storm footage to use later. Trust Bee to catch the dramatic angle. After that failed attempt at contacting a spirit, Cass is more than happy when she is offered the job of checking out possible sprits at the old insane asylum, officially known then as the Twin Forks Lunatic Asylum. There are plans in the works to turn it into a boarding school and he wants her to prove it's not haunted. Given its dark past housing violent criminals and even darker rumors, Cass would bet her only dollar that the place was most certainly haunted. The money offered is a sweet deal indeed and Cass figures what could go wrong? He only wants to know one way or the other. Too bad she didn't heed the warnings swirling around her. The man turns up dead and there are more reasons for Cass to worry. Like will she be on the killers list? Turns out the list of suspects is long.
Besides a very well constructed mystery, the writing has a wonderful flow and the characters are well drawn. Lena Gregory knows how to spin a tale that keeps you guessing and wanting to read just one more page while building the tension. This series is the best pairing of mystery and the paranormal. If you are new to the series no worries, it works fine as a stand alone but be prepared to binge read the rest of the books. Yes, it's that good.
My thanks to the publisher, Beyond the Page and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

A Spirit Seeks Asylum by Lena Gregory is a different cozy mystery wherein the leading character and amateur sleuth is a psychic by the name of Cass Donovan. She is conducting a group reading in her shop one evening after which a couple approached her and introduced themselves. She had noticed them earlier. The man, Elijah Anderson, offered her $20,000 to prove that there were no ghosts at a property he owned, previously known as Twin Forks Psychiatric Center. After a confirming that she and her friend, Bee, could film the process, she agreed and accepted his check. She and Bee were trying to get a v-log started with the goal of making enough money to tide her over the winter when there were few tourists, who were her stock-in-trade. After making arrangements, she and Bee appeared at the property a few days later. Things were not going all that well when, suddenly, she spied a person standing over what turned out to be a body: that of Elijah Anderson, and he was dead. She and Bee had to look into this. Luke, her cope boyfriend reluctantly agreed.

This was a fascinating story with good characters, including Cass' mentor, Simone; her best friend, Stephanie, along with Stephanie's significant other, Tank, who was Luke's partner, and their adopted son, Aiden, who is autistic; a smattering of townspeople, and of course, the suspects. It stands to reason that a psychic might be involved in murders so this trope has the potential for a long life and many books. Cass is a very likable and responsible woman who has been aware of her psychic powers only a relatively short time. The murder mystery was a good one, involving greed and some lust. Cass was drawn to the site, but felt it was a poor place to build anything, let alone a boarding school as Anderson planned. She forged ahead, cognizant of her own safety but didn't let threats stop her: always an important trait in an amateur. She and her best friend, Bee, a gay dress designer, had a solid friendship and had bantering down to a science. It was an entertaining and intriguing book. I recommend it.

A SPIRIT SEEKS ASYLUM by Lena Gregory
The Sixth Bay Island Psychic Mystery

Winter on Bay Island can be brutal, with ice storms, snow, howling wind, and murder. Cass Donovan is desperate to keep Mystical Musings afloat until the tourists return in the Spring. She's working on a vlog and has also agreed to check out the abandoned Twin Forks Lunatic Asylum for its new owner. Despite the building's troubled past, he wants to turn the complex into a boarding school. Even though a young psychic tries to upstage Cass at her own reading, giving a dire warning, Cass is reluctant to turn down the hefty sum she's offered to investigate the decaying building. Arriving at the Asylum, Cass and Bee start to film. Although Cass starts to perceive something otherworldly, her connection is severed by very real shots-and the discovery of their host's dead body. Once again in the midst of a mystery Cass will have to sort through the voices of the dead and the current motives of a slew of suspects before the killer decides to put an end to her permanently.

I've always been drawn to abandoned buildings, and old asylums have always been a particular favorite. Needless to say, I was thrilled to see Cass Donovan investigating one. I would have loved to learn more about the building and its history, as well as the people who once lived there, but A SPIRIT SEEKS ASYLUM wisely kept centered on the current murder mystery.

The sixth Bay Island Psychic Mystery serves as a bridge. Not only as a link between the dead and the living, but between the teacher and student, the experienced and the novice, and a way for the community to connect. It's fascinating to witness Cass's mediumship developing and I'm delighted by the police chief's stance. The friendship between Cass and Bree is inspiring, and the love they share with Stephanie and the Beast is equally heartwarming.

With a perfect blending of chills, humor, friendship, and mystery A SPIRIT SEEKS ASYLUM shows us that the past never truly dies.

FTC Disclosure – The publisher sent me a digital ARC provided through NetGalley, in the hopes I would review it.

Having missed the first books in Lena Gregory's "A Bay Island Psychic Mystery" series, I decided to take the plunge and dive straight in at book six with this novel, A Spirit Seeks Asylum, and I would have missed a treat if I hadn't!

I got to meet clairvoyant Cass Donovan for the first time. Protagonist Cass is tested when the owner, Elijah Anderson, of the Twin Forks Lunatic Asylum, tells her he is going to turn the building and grounds into a boarding school but prior to doing so, wishes to know if the rumours that have been circulating are true about the property being haunted. Cass is pleased to be asked as she needs an injection of cash to see her through the winter period and to help kickstart her new venture into vlogging. Elijah is willing to cough up $20k. When Elijah is found dead, Cass is left wondering who might be next.

Lena Gregory peppers this novel with some delightful narrative and I loved the friendship that Cass had with Stephanie and Bee. The characters were mostly relatable and perfect in their roles. I really enjoyed this compelling, well-executed mystery and I found Cass passionate and determined and I liked that she had a bond with the police. There were some soupçons of humour and the mystery kept me guessing, especially in relation to the motive. I found myself desperate to read just one more page. All in all a very worthwhile read and a series I intend to continue with.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Beyond the Page Publishing via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Cass Donovan, along with her friend, Bee Maxwell, are filming in an abandoned lighthouse for a vlog in the hopes of generating more income during the winter months. Winter time doesn't bring in tourists to Bay Island and in turn, Mystical Musings, won't get much revenue.

Cass Donavan communicates with the dead, but Cass isn't having much luck connecting with a ghost.

They return to Mystical Musings for Cass to do a group reading when Cass approaches a young woman in the crowd, but rather than being asked a question, the woman delivers an ominous warning to leave the dead be. At the same reading, Cass is approached by a couple where the man pleads for Cass's help to go to the abandoned Bay Island Psychiatric Center to prove it isn't haunted. Mr. Anderson hopes to turn the abandoned building into a boarding school. It has a very sordid past, but Mr. Anderson is willing to give Cass 20K. Despite, Cass knowing that it is most definitely haunted, she can't help but agree. The money and being able to film for the vlog could go a long ways.

But once out at the lighthouse, along with something coming through, Cass is witness to a murder, and the suspects leaving the scene. It's not secret that Cass speaks to the dead, and not long before the rumor mills spread that Cass spoke with the deceased about who killed them. While the rumor isn't true, the target on Cass's back is!

I really enjoyed this story. I like that Cass can communicate with the dead to help solve crimes. The cast of characters kept me guessing who the guilty party was.

Winter on Bay Island means fewer tourists and their contributing dollars.
Cass takes on an assignment of investigating an old hospital for the criminally insane to see if it is haunted or suitable for repurposing. Several people are interested in the valuable land on which this abandoned facility sits and each may be willing to do whatever it takes to get control.
Bee, Cass's best friend, and former psychic skeptic, convinces her that a Vlog is the best way to build her reputation. He is also one of my favorite literary characters of all time.
Her other best friend has recently become a mother and her attention and time are elsewhere for this novel. She does continue to have Cass's back, as do the two top cops in this series.
I am enjoying watching the characters grow and relationships develop.

Plenty of "woo~woo" to keep psychic fans interested, but also a good, solid plot and old fashioned research goes into solving a present murder and related crimes. There are hints at some things to come as well. We'll have to wait and see, which means there must be another book in this well loved series! YAY!

Fans of Hallmark's now defunct Good Witch series and Alice Hoffman's infamous book and movie Practical Magic and fans of Paula Brackston will all adore Cass and her community.
Beast doesn't play as large a role in this book but his presence always adds some brightness.

Another 5 star read, satisfying solution and promise of more good things to come!

I'd been needing a Bee/Cass/Beast fix for a long time, and this was better than I could have even imagined. This book was a special treat since it was set in the winter when Bee doesn't get as much design business and actually had the time to hang out and sleuth with Cass. Stephanie was being kept busy with her little adopted boy, so there wasn't a whole lot with her, but she was in all the parts she usually was especially the group readings.

This was so well-plotted and hard to figure out that I just eventually sat back and enjoyed the ride. Bee was definitely at his shining best being first and foremost awesomest friend and protector in the universe and there's always his so-scared-of-ghosts-he-passes-out thing which is always hilarious! He's kinda like a human version of Scooby Doo when he does that.

There were a lot of secrets held and layers to the people involved in the mystery. I was glad to see Simone being the voice of reason and pretty much making Cass have a police presence there for what ended up being the showdown. I always hate for these books to end, but they always end in such a way that you do get a happy family feeling and definitely a good book hangover!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.

A Spirit Seeks Asylum is a wonderful sixth book in the Bay Island Psychic Mystery series. I am always happy to be on Bay Island with Cass, Bee, Stephanie, Tank, and Luke. The Bay Island Psychic Mysteries are one of my favorite cozy mystery series’. I love Lena Gregory’s stories, writing style, and the characters she’s created and nurtured.

The story is unique and entertaining. I was completely engaged from the very beginning. As the story progresses, the author introduces more characters and more motives for the murder of the owner of an abandoned building. Cass’s mystical talents now include hearing voices of the departed. When she investigates the site of the murder, she’s assault by voices of the past while trying to dig through clues in the present, all while trying to stay out of the killer’s crosshairs.

I absolutely adore Cass, Bee, Stephanie, and Tank. Their dynamics create a friendship that is warm and emotional, and they have each other's backs - no matter what. Cass is a very down-to-earth person. She's likable from the start. It is easy to connect to her, whether you believe in psychic abilities or not. Stephanie and Bee are wonderful sidekicks to Cass main character. They are supportive and comforting to Cass. I love how the author has developed Bee. He sounds like the perfectly imperfect best friend that everyone wishes they had to stand beside them.

A Spirit Seeks Asylum, the 6th book in Lena Gregory's outstanding Bay Island Psychic Mystery series, is my favorite so far. Even though the book features an old asylum with a terrible history the plot sticks to its cozy nature and provides the shadow of that history without moving into the world of horror. Even as a fan of Ms. Gregory, I was impressed at how well she balanced the horror with the gentler level of a cozy mystery while still making everything fit together and feel right. Another thing that I love is that the character of Cass fits the intelligence and calm nature that reflects her training. While it was obvious to us in earlier books, she resisted and that is understandable. but am excited to see how far she has gone in accepting her gift.
I was excited to be approved to receive and ARC even though the book has been published. I would have been a while before I could have gotten it otherwise. I think a lot of my friends and followers are going to enjoy it as much as I did. My thanks go out to NetGalley and Beyond the Page for this boon and to Lena Gregory for once again giving me a book that I am excited to share with other readers.

This is the 6th book in the Bay Island Psychic Mystery series. All of these books can be read as a standalone but I would suggest starting from the beginning because they definitely flow into each other. This was such a great cozy murder mystery story. This would be a great book to read in October or the winter months because it has the spooky and snowy vibes. I love how much food is mentioned in the story. The characters are always meeting up or ordering from the diner. The murder was taken place at an abandoned psychiatric center. Rumor had it that they had torture devices there many years ago. It totally reminds me of Pilgrim psychiatric center on Long Island. There were so many rumors about it and kids would constantly break in there to look through the buildings at night. Cass is always amazing at investigating murders that she really doesn’t need to be apart of with her best friend Bee. I am still obsessed with her store and her dog Beast. I think this book is my favorite one so far. I really enjoyed the overall setting and the mystery around the murder.
I can’t believe I only have one book left in the series! Thanks again Lena for sending me this signed copy.

Cass Donovan has been paid quite well by the new owner of Twin Forks Lunatic Asylum to go out there and determine whether the place is haunted or not. But when she finds the body of the man who hired her, she shifts her focus back to the present. When she returns to the asylum to look for clues, she finds the body of another man. Now she must help find the killers before they find her.

I've really enjoyed this series and this book is no exception. However, there was a plot inconsistency in one area that detracted from the story for me. Otherwise, the book was written well and the characters were wonderful with believable relationships. I was hooked on the story from beginning to end. This is the sixth book in the series which the author keeps fresh making each book enjoyable. I'm eager for the next book. I highly recommend both book and series which I suggest you read in order for the most enjoyment and benefit.

This is the sixth in the series but the first I have read. I was not lost in the story so it works well as a standalone story.

Cass Donovan is our protagonist. She is a resident psychic on Bay Island. She is learning to use and trying to harness her skills. She is offered a large amount of money to find out if an abandoned Twin Forks Lunatic Asylum is haunted. The owner wants it not to be haunted so he can sell it to a developer.

She and her BFF Bee go out to the asylum to shot some video footage for her blog to hopefully increase business. While there, they find a body. In the course of investigating, they realize there were murders at the asylum five years ago.

I enjoyed the story, the characters and the interactions.

I was given an ARC from Netgalley and am not required to leave a positive review.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write a review for.

I just love this series so I was more then ready to see what adventure Cass would have next. Bee has convinced her to start a vlog as a way to bring in income during the lean winter months. As a first video ideas they end up at an old abandoned psych asylum that is all by its lonesome atone end of the island. The best part is she being paid to investigate whether the place is haunted or not. This would work out so much better if ah didn't find the man who hired her dead outside while she was there. This leads to quite the fun thrilling investigation filled with a nice balance of paranormal, great characters, and a welcoming small island town. Makes me wish it was real. A total must read for fans of cozies with a touch of the paranormal. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

This was the first book I've read in the series and while it was obvious that I landed in the middle of already established plots and storylines, I still felt like I wasn't missing anything pertinent. I loved Cass and her whole vibe/situation. The story was engaging though predictable. My complaint, they touched on Ophelia, it's clear that there's a story there, but there was zero closure. No alluding to another story coming, the sub plot just fell off. I can see that the next book in the series is actually Ophelia's story, I just felt that the book could have ended with maybe seeing Ophelia or something of the sort. Headed to Amazon to buy the next one!

Book 6 in the series.

This is hands down my favorite book in the series. The others have been okay, but this one really connected with me. I always enjoy Cass and Beast, and more Bee just added to the fun. The strong friendships between the main characters and the way they support each other, just makes me smile.

I have to admit, I also want to know more about Thea, and her grandmother. Hopefully Cass can help her blossom a bit.

All in all, a fun, fast read. I truly hope there are more in the series coming.

This is book 6 in the Bay Island Psychic mystery series. The old abandoned buildings of the Twin Forks Lunatic Asylum have always fascinated and frightened clairvoyant Cass Donovan, but she never dreamed her psychic abilities would be put to the test there. When the building is bought to be renovated into a school, the new owner wants Cass to set rumors to rest about the building being haunted. When she finds the new owner dead the ghosts are all clamoring to be heard. A good cozy with lots of characters returning from previous books. This can be read as a stand alone. Cass Donovan is an ex-psychiatrist who moved to Bay Island when one of her patients died, and her marriage fell apart. She discovered that she has strong psychic abilities, and has since opened a shop where not only does she sell items that help others, but gives both private and group readings.

Her best friend Bee is trying to get Cass to start a vlog where she shows people what she does, and he's sure it will increase business for her. But Cass can't get a solid reading, and so when the weather turns, he packs up his equipment and they head back home, where Cass is slated to do a group reading that evening.

It's at this popular group reading that she discovers she still can't get a full grip, like something is blocking her. She feels as if she's having trouble allowing her mind to truly open up. But Bee insists she'll be fine, and so she proceeds. During the reading however, a woman stands up and insists that 'sometimes the dead need to be left alone.' With this cryptic statement, she leaves. After the reading, a man tells Cass that he owns the old closed Twin Forks Lunatic Asylum and wants to open it as a boarding school for children. Others who are on his board, and especially his wife, want him to sell it and leave it alone. But he will only do so if Cass investigates the asylum and tell him whether it's truly haunted or not. If it is, he'll give up his plans. He tells her that he will pay her well to do so, and writes her a check.

Bee thinks it will be perfect for their vlog, and so the next day they venture out. But while there, Cass definitely senses and hears something, and it's not long before they hear a shot, and look outside to see a man lying on the ground. When she discovers it's her client, she wonders why he was there in the first place. But even then her new visions don't leave, and Cass thinks she can find the murderer. But first she needs to find out who had the best motive, and if they're going to kill again...

This is the sixth book in the series and I have read every one of them. I do believe that they keep getting better and better, as Cass's psychic ability gets stronger with each book. Each time I read one I declare that it is my favorite, and here we go again. This one is definitely my favorite. Cass not only finds herself investigating a murder once again, she finds herself in the protective 'custody' of Bee, her six-foot-plus best friend, who gives up working in his shop on his own schedule to watch over her. We also get to meet Simone again, whom I took a definitely liking to in the last book and am glad to see that she's back once more.

But we also have the subplots involving her other friend Stephanie's new adopted son, Aiden, who is autistic; and a newcomer named Thea, who is a link to Cass's investigation, although you will have to read the book to see how.

The plot was indeed suspenseful, and it kept me reading in one sitting, which is a very good sign. It means that the book kept me interested enough where I didn't want to veer into anything else. There were secrets long held, ghosts both old and new who wanted justice, and a cunning murderer who so far had been able to escape the eyes of police. But when the ending comes, the climax is gripping and when it all ends, you wish that the book would go on. I definitely loved this book and await eagerly for the next in the series.

I received an advance copy from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review.

Cass was hired to find out whether an insane asylum was haunted, and if it would be safe to house kids. Haunted? Of course! Safe? Not if you consider the strength of the spirits haunting it...and the murder that happened while she was there.

Supported and protected by her best friend Bee, a hulking sized man (don't judge him because he designs amazing fashion), and Beast, her 100 pound dog, Cass finds herself in the unenviable position of avoiding death while trying to identify the motive and killer.

There are many suspects and motives, but was there only one murder? The asylum grounds have more secrets. And the people in the cozy town she returned to, have burdens on their souls.

It's a good thing Cass is a psychic who can communicate with the dead, and Mystical Musings is the perfect place to give them a voice!

This is an entertaining winter-time mystery in the off-season tourist town of Twin Forks. The cast of characters is varied, the asylum is spooky, and the suspense is well-done. Cass, a psychic and new business owner, is insecure and in some danger; but she is very fortunate to be surrounded by a best friend, a boyfriend, a cop friend, an old friend, and a dog! Plus a psychic mentor! What more could a girl ask for? To not be shot at? Sure, but every situation has its downsides!

It's a fun read, and the food sounds delicious. I refuse to say which elements haunted me longest!

4/5 Stars

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book. However, I was pleasantly surprised and delighted when I found myself reading the whole thing in one sitting! I couldn't get enough. I plan to seek out the others in the series.

Cass Donovan is a medium in the tiny community of Bay Island. She does a booming business with the tourist trade in the summers but this winter she is stretched thin for income to pay her rent and mortgage. When offered a hefty sum to go assess an abandoned asylum and tell the proprietor if it is haunted or not, Cass is hesitant to take the job based on reservations about the history of the property, However, when the man who gave her the money ends up dead, she feels compelled to get involved and solve the case.

I feel like calling this a "psychic" mystery is a bit of a misnomer since she does not really predict the future but has more contact with the dead and sensations of energy, which is why I called her a medium instead. However, that did not detract from my enjoyment of the story and I found myself disappointed when I came to the end of the book!

Bee, however, is the best character in this book. He and Cass are a dynamic duo and charming to behold. He is the Robin to her Batman. I do hope this series will continue and I look forward to reading its predecessors.

My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC. Opinions in this review are my own.
