Honey and Ice #2

A Throne of Feathers and Bone

Rate this book
Chosen. Framed by my father’s murderer. Running from the fae courts. Fated to never touch the man who sets my blood on fire.

Life was looking up for me not long ago. Now, it’s looking all the way down. This latest shitstorm? Yeah, it takes the cake and the beetroot tickle.

The father who shunned me from birth lays cold and dead. The courts are in turmoil and after blood. My blood. I need to find his killer, yet that mystery pales in comparison to the madness crushing fae in its giant grip.

I’m desperate to find the door to Underhill before true anarchy descends. The answers I seek are on the other side, I’m sure of it.

With two gifted swords, a magic shield, some finnicky power, and dubious spirit for company, I must locate the path to our native realm again. And if I can manage that while resisting the Unseelie fae stalking my every footstep, then all the better.

But I am part human after all.

If you can’t get enough of Jennifer L. Armentrout, Sarah J. Mass, Holly Black or Elise Kova, you will love this journey into the fae world where impossible love and an explosive story will leave you breathless for more!

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.

I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)

Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.

I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)

As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.

Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.

Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.

A fast paced and riveting book. Kallick is getting smarter and stronger, finally coming into her powers more, and I'm obsessed with the blossoming romance. Also a bit of steam🔥 which makes it all the better. I did see that twist coming as I felt something was off in book 1, but I feel like there is maybe more to it? Either way, I'm excited for the next book and to see what is finally gonna happen now that the truth has come out! Great addition to the series!

Really more of the same slow, confusing pace as book 1. I feel like once again, Alli goes in circles for 3/4 of the book, trying to figure out what’s going on…then she gets an earth-shattering revelation, and once again her entire worldview is shaken.

This book was a bit better than book 1 because we’ve finally found a coherent storyline, and we finally got a (measly!) bit of spice between Lan and Alli! Not nearly enough to make up for the flat writing, but a girl will take what she can get 😂

And if I have to read about Hyacinth’s huge bouncy boobs one more goddamn time, I will shove a beetroot tickle down someone’s throat 😇 Are the authors 13 year old boys??? 🤣

1 Star DNF @ 63%

Wow, I did not anticipate this would be a DNF for me. I'm actually incredibly disappointed, but in retrospect I'm not super surprised.

I gave the 1st book in this series 4 stars. Looking back now I realize that was an incredibly generous rating. At the time I thought this series had a ton of potential, and although there were some red flags, I figured things would improve/make more sense as the series continued. Unfortunately, that's not what happened. This addition was confusing, slow, and quite honestly, boring.

There is such a mix of issues that it's hard for me to exactly pinpoint what went wrong here, but I think it can be culminated by saying this book seems to be having an identity crisis. Is this a romance? Is this just a fantasy where a girl (continuing from the first book) is STILL trying to figure out how to access the Underhill? So many interesting plot points were started in the first book - the relationship between Lan and Alli, the fact that Alli's father was murdered//her father was king, the whole backstory with Lan and Alli as children, Rudy, the wild fae, the ghosts/Alli's mothers people etc, but none of this is being fully fleshed out or tied up. I realize I'm not done with the series, or book, but c'mon you have to give the reader something! It feels like these plot points are left hanging and there isn't anything that I'm interested in because nothing is being delved into. Honestly, by this point in the book I'm just sort of confused. Alli and Lan are sort of together but not (I'll expand on their relationship more), they are just on the run the entire time still looking for a way into the Underhill. We continue knowing nothing about Alli's magic, their relationship isn't progressing at all (I've lost interest tbh), and fae courts are almost entirely removed from the story (they feel like an afterthought).

The writing is a bit odd in this too. The plot moved forward in a weird, stunted way. And I don't even really mean plot, because truly, it's not moving forward. It's like the characters are continuing on their journey and moving from place to place because things just work out? The story has a lot of movement but no real progression. ie. Alli and Lan will be running, will stumble upon X thing (Ghost talking to Alli, a kelpie to transport them, random person who will help them, whatever), and then progress into the next scene. It's a really odd way of telling the story - things are just sort of working out for them. They aren't "successful" in their journey due to their own merits.

A side note on the characters - I felt a bit meh about them in the first book - but now I have decided I don't like Alli, Lan, or literally any of the other characters. The biggest issue is they all lack depth. I have zero connection to any of them. Alli is, quite frankly, annoying. Her character is odd because she has basically no redeeming qualities and her line of thought in different situations makes no sense. She's almost comes across juvenile, yet this is a NA novel? There is cussing but then there is literally no sexual tension or smut in this at all. Is this YA or not? Because it feels like YA, but with cussing and the characters are a bit older. (ie. the identity crisis I mentioned earlier).

Now Lan - again I know nothing about him. There is zero depth here. I was actually quite interested in him, how he became an Unseelie, his family dynamic (being grandson of Lugh), his presence in Alli's childhood, why he's so protective/possessive of Alli etc. but none of these plot lines have been explored. Honestly, the whole "orphan reading buddy" thing seems to have been completely abandoned. It's so disappointing because that was one of the only things that made Lan and Alli's relationship semi-believable.

Now the relationship. Going into this I thought that this would be a fairly romance driven book, especially since the actually storyline of the Underhill is so lackluster. Well, there's basically no romance here. Lan and Alli have literally no chemistry, NOTHING is happening between the two. They have an odd "touch and freak out" situation, but it doesn't really do anything for me. I don't believe these two are compatible in any way. It's also difficult to root the two because their characters are just bleh (and I dislike Alli).

Overall, I came into this with way too high of expectations. Rather than moving the series forward in an interesting way we are left bored and a tad confused. I've been trying to read this for 3 days (which is a very long time for me to finish a book) and have only gotten to 63%. There's no point in hate reading the rest. I won't be continuing the series.

This is getting serious.

This book has an entirely different vibe than the first. Alli's trust and relationship issues with Lan, her lack of understanding her magic, the pressure of having to save the world, and the feeling of being led around on a wild goose chase was maddening and enthralling to read at the same time. Each issue is resolved, with tons of character development in between. To get to the truth of the matter, (Underhill and the Madness) there's a giant swerve that I wasn't expecting. Well, a couple of them, so there's way more to explore in the next book.

The romance in the previous book was practically non-existent because it was billed as an "impossible" one. (If you missed the reviews and blurbs before reading book one, that this was basically a friends-to-enemies-to-lovers trope, I don't know what to tell the overly critical Heathens of Goodreads and Pearl Clutchers.) Lan was distant and somewhat of an ass in the first. This book explains why in further detail. Thankfully, there's a little more heat in this, but things progress frustratingly slow with all of the Seelie/Unseelie magic incompatibility and trust issues for Alli to work past. Despite Alli's attempts at forming a relationship with the "safe" option, it's made pretty clear that Faolan is the one she loves and that Lan feels the same. Told ya! 😀 All-in-all it gets 🌶🌶🌶 on the Scoville Sexy Scale from me. Ha ha!

My thoughts while reading:

• The impossibility of lovers from different courts to be together was so freaking angsty. I don't love feeling despair right along with the MC, so all I could do was hope for a better outcome for Lan and Alli. I was rewarded for sticking around.

• Lan - we finally get more out of that fae (namely some territorial behavior, tenderness, and a better look at his back story) and I was not disappointed.

• Friendship - Again, loyalty like this is a rare thing and should be cherished.

I'd like to point out that what at least one critic was saying, especially about the first book, is a flat out lie. (I noticed that the fans of SJM are complete assholes when there is any comparison whatsoever to their trad published icon.) There is more to Cinth than her physical description, and the author's do a fantastic job, both in this one and the last, of *showing* and *telling* the reader about her and her background. Also, the meaning of her friendship to the MC. The boob jokes were hilarious in this one, too. Nothing "misogynistic" about a silly female friendship where the obvious is pointed out with humor. I think it might take actual experience with friendship to recognize that fact though. 🤷🏻‍♀️

4.5⭐s.

I was sucked into the rabbit hole with this one. Straight down to Wonderland. The first book in this series was like the white rabbit traipsing through my garden and I followed, ever curious, into a twisty-turny tale that I am now ravenous for. Into a world of fae with magic, secrets, and betrayal. I'm kind of a mess right now. Just saying.

I went into this book with the biggest hard-on for this story. I was ravenous for the second book after reading the first. This book did not disappoint. I was so glued into the story from start to finish. There were so many revelations and plot twists in this book that my mind was spinning. I love the writing style that this author duo has cultivated. These books are so easy to read and flow perfectly. The world-building is really creative and immersive.

The characters in this series are so easy to love. Each character has a distinct personality that makes them jump off the page. The characters are full of emotion and complexity. The chemistry between characters is so realistic. I loved Alli's character growth and journey in this book. She meets many challenges head-on and adapts to the things that are coming at her. She makes many self-discoveries in this book and it was a delight to see her navigate through everything. Faelan has opened up a lot in this book but he is still very reserved in many aspects. We learn many new things about him but I didn't feel that his character has any significant growth. At least where his personal character development was concerned. He is certainly adapting right along with Alli but I feel that his character arc is still hanging in the balance while we wait with bated breath. Hyacinthe was as delightful as ever. Her character really has my heart. She speaks her mind and is so genuine. I don't want to get too into the other characters because so much happens in this book and there are bound to be spoilers if I elaborate. I did enjoy the revelations regarding several characters and I grew a fondness for characters that I didn't expect to form an attachment to. If I had to say one thing about these characters it would be that they are written with a vast amount of emotion so the journey that these books take you on is truly memorable.

The love triangle that developed in the first book is still present in the second book to an extent. Alli has choices to make in regards to her heart that aren't easy. There are odds stacked against her and Faelan that she can't justify. She cares for Drake and it seems that he would be well-suited for her in many respects. He is also the obvious safe choice in a partner but Faelan and Alli have a history that isn't easily erased from her heart. A lot of new information comes to light about Faelan and Alli's connection but I won't spoil anything. I will say that I enjoyed the honesty that Alli and Faelan share in this book. They are finally honest with each other about their feelings, whether or not a future for them would be possible. I also liked Drake's acknowledgment and acceptance of Alli's past and feelings for Faelan. He knows that the two of them have a past and that giving him up isn't easy for her. He tell her that she is worth the wait and I felt that sentiment really resonated with his kind-hearted character.

Overall, this is a fun and fast-paced story that will keep you on the edge of your seat! I was so enamored with this book that I devoured it in one sitting. If you love fantasy and paranormal stories with interesting plots, vibrant characters, and brilliant storytelling then you've just found your next read! The third and final book of this series comes out next month and I am HERE FOR IT!

To takie fajne momenty poprzetykane totalną nudą.

The first book in the series was oh so melodramatic yet still rather addictive in the manner of most popular YA fantasy. Unfortunately, unlike the first book, I didn't enjoy this book enough to overlook its flaws. The lead characters are all rather bland and unlikeable and their romance is, as a result, unsurprisingly quite mehh. Plus, the convoluted plot alone wasn't enough to hold my interest so I ended up skipping forward to the end.

There's a lot happening in this one.
The Seelie are chasing Kallick after her father's death, the door to Underhill still needs to be found, and the ever-present madness gets a bit of a turbo boost. Not to mention that she has to fix everything with magic she can't command. What could possibly go wrong?
I did find a lot of the plot twists to be predictable, but it was funny while it got there. There were some great one-liners. (I'm not giving you any, it's not as fun that way). Rounding up today.

I am not sure where to begin when reading this book. Do i discuss how upset i was reading the book after learning the truth. Or am i happy with the book for actually showing me a side of Lan that explains his actions on so many levels.

The authors have chosen not to take a traditional route with this plot. I was truly devastated about what happen. I could only think how dare they. While I understand that its a trilogy and not everything is going to be answered directly I really wanted them to. But what I enjoyed the most was that the authors answered question by having the reader think it out through Alli. I honestly thought it was hilarious when one comment went over her head- you’ll see. I just showed how truly innocent she was even though she behaves as if she is not.

How dare the authors put me on this roller coaster ride during this reading to where i spent my whole dat reading this book because I couldn’t stop. Or how they made me turn feral when my child asked for my phone when i was reading. This book is so worth the read.

Reread Review:
Literally both times I read this book, I had no intention of reading this book in one sitting but it's so engrossing and addictive that both times I really couldn't stop myself. I love that I never know what to expect out of the story and having fun every step of the journey. This series is so entertaining and even though I've read only two books from this author duo - I believe they write the BEST plot twists to make you want to read more! I'm so glad I reread this book before I FINALLY dive into A Crown of Petals and Ice. Strong sequel, highly recommend!

Review after First Read:
YES! I love the direction this series is heading in and I don't want it to end so soon and personally I find the quick-pacing of this series to be perfect!

I'm so ready for the finale but not prepared for the wait :,)

Am I the only one who ran into this book looking for some bloody answers and just ended up… well, rather confused. This whole Underhill is a person but isn’t but there's a doorway, but there isn’t, but is place but is also just pretending to be a place… thing… Man. Man oh man. Not to mention the heroes and villains switch and trade vocations with each bloody breath I take. I cannot keep up.

I also can't deal with this “quirky” attitude crap. It really makes me hate Kallik rather than find her cute and endearing. And I will never, NEVER, take her seriously as a queen.

Really though, even the romance fell flat. I’m pretty disappointed in this series… I won’t lie to you. I’m hoping for a huge flash band finale here. Begging for it.

DNF @ 65%
I loved the first book, but WOW did this drop everything. The plot is so slow moving that I could question if it's there. The romance should pick up, yet it's not. It is to the point that it feels cheesy and forced. Alli could have every answer in front of her at this point and she still would do the wrong thing. I know this is NA and Alli is an adult but she acts like she's 16 and can't use her brain to solve anything. I can't do it anymore. Such a disappointment I was so excited for this trilogy.

That was a fast read! I couldn't put it down! I can't wait till the 3rd book and see how this all wraps up.

Book two picks up exactly where book one leaves you which I appreciate. I can't the catching up game and I feel like it was a nice transition.

I love the continuation of the story and the twists and turns the author took. When certain things were revealed I wasn't at all surprised though regardless of my appreciation. It was kind of predictable in this book but that did not take away from the enjoyment of it all.

I really liked it, it didn't have "middle book syndrome" and therefore worth reading.

No i sama fabuła też jest pełna tych dziur i nielogiczności.

Review
This was a fun and fast paced sequel to A Court of Honey and Ash. The tensions continue to rise as Kallik is set on a course to figure out what happened to the Underhill. I was so engaged the entire time reading, wanting to know what was going to happen next. I loved the romance between her and Lan, and I loved how they went from childhood friends to maybe enemies? to sorta lovers. I really enjoyed this book and I'm excited to see how the trilogy will end!

Alli was getting on my nerves

I really hated how blind she was for most of the book. It was pretty obvious who was her hidden enemy. But even when presented with a lot of proof, she was a bit stubborn about it. Of course, it wasn't entirely her fault. I just really got irritated about it.

One thing about this series is that while it feels a bit light when you're reading it, the story deals with a lot of heavy issues (at least for me).

Anyway, I can't wait to read book 3.

I really like this series! Kallik the MC is likeable and feisty. In this book she is on the run with Alan (love interest) and has to pass many tests to succeed in staying alive and discovering her inheritance. My favourite character in this was a foul-mouthed talking land kelpie. There was plenty of backstabby action and a very satisfying conclusion (although not for Kallik!)

4.75.

Well, this was pretty much perfect. I really enjoyed the first book, but I loved this one.

There is so much revealed in the first book, that I really can't be too specific in this review for the second, but if you enjoyed the first book then you'll adore this.

We see Kallick develop so much, both in her relationships, knowing who she can trust and is beginning to trust herself and her power.

We get lots of answers and they just make the plot thicker, building up to an epic sounding third book.

For those who, like me, wanted just a bit more romance with Faolan, well this book delivers it. I love them so much!

My only gripe, and why I've deducted 0.25 from 5 starts is that there is some vague nonsense around a potential live triangle in the forts bit with Drake. I LOATHE nothing more in a book than a love triangle or nay sort of hint at one and will never read a book with one. Ever since the TV show Lost they make me rage. They are lazy story telling devices to create romantic tension and I can't abide them. There were about 20 pages where I was beginning to get mad. However, it turned out to be, predictably, pointless. So I was mollified and then Dow right delighted again in the second half when it came to Lan and Kallick.

So, in summary, brief sort of love triangle nonsense aside, this book was bloody fantastic and I highly recommend this series!

Well hell, Alli is continuing her journey and boy is it big. She only has to clear her name and find the door to underhill, no biggie. She finds out even more about herself as the book goes on. All of this with Lan by her side, but will he always be there? Sometimes things are not what they seem and when you pull the curtains aside, you won’t like the scenery in front of you. Alli certainly has her reasons for not trusting anyone but her BFF but it may come down to her letting the past go in order to embrace her future.

This book continues and moves forward the overall series arc while plowing through an individual book arc. Alli grows so much in this continuation and with her we learn more about Lan and his past. There is some steamy parts which leave you panting for more too! I thoroughly enjoy Alli’s wit and the banter between her and… everyone. This book made me chuckle, elated, and grieve all in one. The mark of great authors is to make you truly feel for what the characters are going through. That is exactly what Shannon and Kelly did here.

“If our magics didn’t react the way they do, and if we were from the same court, would this — you and me…”
“In an instant, Kallick.”

A Throne of Feathers and Bone ☑️ what a ride 😱 I spent the first third of the book “telling” Kallick that something was not right and I didn’t trust them. And that maybe that one royal wasn’t so bad… I kind of liked her instantly. But did the MC listened to me?! Of course not. (Yup, I was right *pats herself on the back*).

Then they go to underhill and there I was swooning because *perfect* 😌 yeah, yeah I know big important information was made available to us and all that jazz but did you read that part when he says he just wants to hold her?! I mean. 🥺Plot is great but have you met Lan??!! Last but not least… my heart was racing, anxiety so real when they got back and things just start happening and just wouldn’t stop 😱. I SO DIDN’T SEE IT COMING AND YET IT WAS SO PAINFULLY OBVIOUS ☹️ I feel ashamed I didn’t put two and two together. 🙄 have I’ve told you I would k$ll for a bonus scene from Lan’s POV?! No, well now you know. 4.5 stars ⭐️

P.S.: there was a point in time that I would’ve felt really freaking sad about him *something something* but by then I was just like “yeah, sucks buddy… oh well” 🤷🏻‍♀️

*Thoughts*

A Throne of Feathers and Bones, by co-authors Shannon Mayer, and Kelly St. Clare, is the second installment in the Honey and Ice Trilogy. After being falsely accused of murdering her own father by her step-mother Adair and sentence to death by drowning, Kallik escapes thanks to the brilliant execution of Faolan, Cinth, and a Kelpie with an attitude. Ciekawa koncepcja świata i magii.

Oh my god, it just keeps getting better. This series is seriously amazing! I'm kind of beside myself that it doesn't get more notability.

"What we prefer doesn't always change the truth."

Storyline/Plot: I think for a little while the storyline might have dragged, but in the end, you really understand why. I never felt bored though. With all of the trials and discoveries that Alli makes in this book, it was crazy! There were so many twists and turns that I couldn't believe I didn't see coming, but that's really what makes this book so good. You get caught up in exactly what Alli is doing or trying to accomplish, and you forget the small details leading up to the big moments. From Alli trying to discover what her magic really means, to trying to find a way to simply save the world, there's really always something going on. It's very difficult to review this book because by the end seriously everything is changed. I just can't get enough! Just like the last book, the ending is a good cliffhanger that gets you wanting to read more but also doesn't make you mad. The synopsis really doesn't do it for these books, there is SO MUCH MORE. I didn't have some confusion in some parts, you'll know which parts when you read it, and I feel like I was still a little confused by the end, but I can imagine a lot of that will be cleared up soon. I just have to say this...

"Looked like my heart had chosen the tragic route despite my head trying to run interference."

Romance: I'm really glad we had some romance in this one, and will seemingly have more in the next book. I think the way the romance developed into something plot-related is just genius. Really a meant-to-be type of situation. I think the romance really has a lot to do with the character development. I just love Alli having the realization, "He always had been [around], whether I could see him or not." It was just a beautiful development. God this is just a hard review to write without spoiling, especially since there was kind of a love triangle in a sense going on by the end of the first book. Just know, the romance and drips of spice in this book are absolutely beautiful and add so much to the storyline, not just an addition because romance thickens the plot.

"You don't have to be who they limit you to be. Crave your own likeness."

Characters: I could seriously go on and on about Alli, she is one of my favorite MCs I have read about yet. Honestly. She is smart, witty, powerful, strong, I mean I don't have enough adjectives for her. Of course in the end we learn a few big-ticket things about her, that she learns about herself as well, and she takes them all in stride. She doesn't have a lot of time to recover from those revelations, so I'm sure we will be getting some time to work through these new things in the next book. I adore Lan so much and I am so glad we got more of him in this book. I mean we really found out a lot about him and were able to see all of the sacrifices he's made for Alli, and how things are aligning. Drake, oh sweet Drake, he is such a little cutie. I love him so much. We didn't get as much of him as I wanted, and maybe that was on purpose to create mystery, but I adore him and how sweet and kind and gentleman-y he is. Cinth is a dream of a best friend, and I am a little sad she wasn't active for a portion of this book, but I get it. I want more of her and her brilliance. Ruby, lord Ruby is a lot to unpack, isn't he? As an author, I can't believe how well she created his character, by the end I was truly shocked, and definitely on Alli's side. I'm excited to get more of Josef and Adair in the next book, hopefully.

World-Building: This book definitely had a lot more world-building in it, and it was done beautifully. The ethereal fae world that I was missing in the last book definitely made its appearance in this book in the way that the authors spoke of every tree, blade of grass, or sky. It was so easy to follow, as well.

"Sometimes the only answer was to submit. To embrace that which was yet unknown because trying to understand was impossible."

Overall, I can't believe this series has been hiding in my TBR and no one's been talking about it. I am seriously appalled at the lack of hype around it. Sure, a lot of people are upset with its similarities to other books in the fantasy category, and I can agree with that, but if you actually read the series, you'll see it's quite different, really. It's absolutely worth the read, ten times over!
