Crossbar May is doomed. That’s what I first came to know about the shady town. I never thought I'd see myself ending up in that horrific town... but I did. I was taken, stolen and completely destroyed. The Shadows were hovering upon me to wreck me, hiding and waiting- until they finally attacked. Ace West is on a mission to ruin me. He told me he’ll break me in the most ruthless way. What he doesn't know is that you can't break someone who’s already broken. And you definitely can't break the girl you love without destroying yourself.

Original review:
Allison's boyfriend Zach was killed in a car crash a year ago, on the day of her 17th birthday. That same crash took away her ability to run and dance, and Allison hasn't been the same since.
A year later, Allison's birthday is no better. She gets kidnapped by a ruthless gangster for seemingly no reason. She's a good girl, she never did anything wrong. Or did she?
Said gangster is definitely convinced she did, and he's ready to deliver his form of justice by any means necessary.
This is a debut book so I won't be too harsh. Or at least I'll try not to be.
The Good:
- Allison is definitely one of the better things in this book. She sees things differently, she likes to read, her sense of style is great (vintage dresses, but this was wasted potential as we only saw it mentioned once and never again), she doesn't party (anymore) and she likes to see the good in everyone.
Sure, she's a bit naive and falls for her kidnapper fast, but she's still a nice character that didn't annoy me.
- Willow, Kenzie and later Lola. The former two didn't get enough page time, but they're real friends all the same.
- Easton. In a lot of ways he was better than Ace. I'm not saying he should've been the love interest...but he should've been the love interest.
- The romance. When it gets going it's cute. Even though Ace is Mr. hot and cold.
The Bad:
- The writing style. It's not so much the writing style itself, because it wasn't hard to get though, but the grammar and sentence structure.
I did read an advance copy so a lot of my issues with those things will probably be fixed in the final version, but there were enough mistakes that they kept jumping out at me and taking me out of the story.
There was also a lot of repetitiveness, especially in the beginning where the characters would say the same thing twice, just phrased a different way a few lines down on the same page.
- Ace. He annoyed me from his very first PoV, and while I did grow to tolerate him in the second half of the book, I never fully warmed up to him. Here's why.
We all swear from time to time, right? I know I sure do. But there's normal swearing, and then there's whatever the hell Ace is doing in this book.
In chapter 4, there are 13 mentions of the word fuck and 49 mentions of the word fucking, most of which are said by our lovely gangster-hero Ace. All of that in just one chapter!
Dear Ace, just because you can put fucking in front of just about anything and have it make sense, doesn't mean that you should.
Still, I chose the worst example because he only swears about half as much in the rest of the book (probably some subconscious Allison influence).
It just came off wrong you know? In those starting chapters he felt more like an edgy thirteen year old who learned how to swear for the first time instead of a big time gangster.
Aside from that, he spends a lot of time saying he's going to do something instead of doing the thing. It feels like he's always trying to prove to people that he's bad when he's really not. I'm sorry, I didn't get those vibes from him, but he tried.
- There's barely any logical kidnappers in the gang. As soon as Allison starts asking questions they go ahead and give her answers on a silver platter (but not Ace, at least he did something right). She's going to be dead anyway, why would they care to spill their secrets?
And no, I didn't want a book where everyone hates Allison and mistreats her, but just...logic, please give me some logic people.
- The pacing. This is both good and bad. It didn't slog, but the book wasn't that interesting until halfway in.
- Kingston Ivanshov. He's supposed to be Russian. With that name...
Anyway, similar to Ace, I didn't get the badass vibes from him that I was supposed to. But the man only got two PoVs and a handful of scenes all together so I'll give him a pass.
- The resolution at the end was wayyy too easy and convenient.
Final Thoughts:
The storyline wasn't bad, and both this book and its author deserve a chance. So don't write The Ruthless Gangster off just because I had more negative things to say about it than positive.
I'm confident that the final version will attract the right readers who will love this book till their dying breath.
I wish Avery Kane a lot of luck, and that her craft gets better and better with every book.
*Thank you to the author and Bed and Books PR for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review*
There were a lot of things that I liked about this story, but I had a very difficult time reading it. The grammar and sentence structure made it hard to follow sometimes and it really needed some editing. On the flip side, the story was really interesting and original and this first time author definitely had a worthwhile story to tell! The side characters were intriguing and made me want their stories as well. I'll definitely be giving this author another chance and hopefully we'll see some growth!
This took me awhile to finish it and you can definitely tell its a debut book. Some things were a bit interesting like the twist, and I'm Interested in a few side characters, but the dialogue was a bit cheesy and actions were OTT, but I expect that from a debut author. She has potential though!
The Ruthless Gangster is Avery Kane’s debut novel and the first book of The Shadow Sinners series!
As someone who reads a lot of dark romance I really found this book to be interesting with intriguing characters that I enjoyed reading about. Ace and Allison are both characters that feel strongly about things and together they just become so explosive. Unfortunate events have led to misunderstandings but I liked the way it really kept the plot going. I was also intrigued with how Ace and Allison’s connection began and grew. It wasn’t perfect and I think each of them have flaws but they simply fit right together. Their moments were the most interesting to me.
This book has side characters that make you want to know more about them and I love that in a book. They were written to be intriguing and leave you wanting more. All in all I think Avery Kane did really well with this debut novel and I can’t wait for what’s to come!
** P.S. The Ruthless Gangster does contain mature themes!! **
Avery Kane has hit it! Wow! A ballerina with a past and a gangster with revenge on his plate. Things aren't what they seem, and don't forget the tissues because what an exciting emotional ride. Once you think you've figured it out, Avery Kane slaps you with something different. A touching story with a darkness to keep us all satisfied. Flowed perfectly and the end will leave you breathlessly in tears. I can't wait for more. Happy reading 👀💗📚
5 stars! *ARC provided exchange for an honest review*
Title: The Ruthless Gangster Genre: Mature YA, Contemporary Romance, New Adult Plot/Setting: To be honest the plot was very cliche and is done so many times but Avery Kane's execution was perfect! The way she interpreted the story really impressed me. The setting is in the US, there were some school-related scenes but not much since the focus of the story is the romance between the main leads.
-Characters- Hero: I loved Ace West SOOOOOO MUCH. He started off being cruel and apathetic towards Alli but eventually, he realized that what he did and assumed was wrong. I really loved his character development because you can see the growth in him from the beginning towards the end. Heroine: Allison is the type of heroine that I would love to be friends with. I loved how she wasn't portrayed as this doormat type of heroine despite the circumstances she's facing. She wasn't immature and she handled the situation very well. I really appreciate that she wasn't hateful and could see the good in people despite their way of doing things. ALLISON is A QUEEN.
-Writing- Pacing: I loved the pacing! It wasn't too slow, not too fast. Just the right amount! Narration: POV from several characters from the story but mostly from Alli and Ace. I really appreciate that Avery Kane let us read the opposing side and why they did what they have to do. She didn't blind-sided us, which is one of the reasons why this novel is different apart from the rest. It gives the readers' a much wider perspective. Loopholes: NONE! -Romance- Chemistry: I LOVED THEIR CHEMISTRY TOGETHER!!!! THEY ARE SO PERFECT FOR ONE ANOTHER!!!! FIGHT ME IF YOU THINK OTHERWISE!!!!!!!!!!! Connection: Honestly, SOULMATES. I can't imagine them having a relationship with other people. ALLISON x ACE FOREVER!!!!!!!! Steam level: I would say probably a 3.5 out of 5? It's not the steamiest book I've ever read but considering that this is Mature YA, it's pretty steamy in my opinion. But don't expect erotica. For me, the love scenes were very emotional and heartwarming. I LOVED IT.
Overall: All I can say is that this was such a great debut novel from a newbie author! I am impressed and would like to read more of her books! I think Avery Kane has a great future ahead of her. Just continue writing and be yourself! Thank you so much for providing me an ARC copy, I can't wait for the next one to come!
The premise of the book I enjoyed. Like nothing I've ever read before, really. So, an original storyline with a kind of twist near the end that I did not see coming. I liked the book enough to be interested in upcoming books in the series. Obviously, Asher and Lola. Easton. And another character who I hope will make an unexpected return.
There was a lot I had an issue with in regards to grammar and editing. I might have given the book a 4½ star rating. In the end, I rate this book 3½ stars.
Oh, let me tell you, these Shadow Sinners are hot!
On the bridge of being 17 Allison waited for her first kiss. On the bridge of being 18 she was kidnaped.
The story was beautiful and gripping. I really sympathized with Allison, not because of what she'd been through - it wasn't that bad - but because of her heart. She had Ace and then she didn't. And those moments of him hesitating pulled me in deeper and deeper. I knew his struggle and I knew about his life, what made him the way he was. He was simply mesmerizing and the reader in me just couldn't wait to get to the parts when there was just the two of them.
Secondary characters were just as amazing, thankfully some of them we'll be getting their own story.
Overall, this book was quite amazing. I devoured it in one sitting.
The Ruthless Gangster by Avery Kane, a new adult dark romance with mature themes (CW: kidnapping, violence, language, drug use, child abuse, sex) that will hook readers immediately with its brilliant tagline: “The devil is out to corrupt the ballerina.” As a dark romance novel lover, I really enjoyed this book and am already looking forward to this debut author’s next release!
The book is character rather than plot driven, which I enjoyed. It’s one of those great books where the side characters are just as good and multidimensional as the main characters. The premise is nothing new, but that’s what makes it so appealing for its target audience: the bad boy/good girl trope is popular for a reason. It’s a great take on enemies to lovers as well. It’s steamy, and there are definitely overtones of BDSM, so if that’s your thing, definitely pick up a copy.
If you are a reader who does not enjoy melodrama, then this book is probably not for you. The Ruthless Gangster’s prose is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea in that regard. However, I hope the book will not be criticised for it; that would misunderstand its core aim and demographic. The moodiness, which saturates every line, is what made this read so enjoyable for me, and my fellow chronic dark romance readers will be in for a real treat. This is a book that lets its reader feel dark, moody, and emotional without feeling guilty, which I love. I recommend it chiefly (though not exclusively, obviously) for hetero women 18+ who enjoy binging dark, steamy romance or BDSM novels, and are looking for an author who intimately understands their demographic.
Without spoiling too much, this book has a really satisfying ending and sets the reader up for the next instalment!
Thank you so much Avery for my review copy. Rate: 4.5 🌟🌟🌟🌟✨
It’s been a while since I read such an emotional read. I love reading dark romance. I’m the very first page this book had me hooked. The writing was amazing it sped it up where we would miss everything or be too slow. Some of the things I love seeing in books are character developments. Where we see the characters grow and learn from their mistakes.
Allison is one of my favorite heroines she doesn’t let anyone step all over her. She could see the good in people even when they weren’t acting like it.
Ace is so amazing. He is ruthless, Dark, and his character development was so good. I love Allison’s and Ace’s relationship.
This story kept me on my toes and glued to my kindle. I couldn’t put it down and wanted so much more.
This debut novel by Avery Kane stands apart from any type of gangster book I’ve ever read. The way the author delivers the story is great and the way the characters tell their story keeps you hooked. Allison and Ace will captivate you as they navigate two different worlds but come together as one. Their love story is one I thoroughly enjoyed. She introduced some intriguing secondary characters that I look forward to reading. As this debut author hones her craft she will be another author to keep your eye on.
I am so excited to share this review with you. Here is a new author Avery Kane with her debut novel and I gotta say you need to watch for her because she is going to be amazing. So here we have Allison and Ace, who both have suffered in some way. So they are both broken. You will see this with the character development through out the book. I love the enemy to lover aspect we got going on here. The push and pull dynamic is there and it builds up. Oh man does it. I will say that this is a slow burn so expect it to be explosive and it was. It was hot. Now I also got drawn into the book early on with the mystery of why things were happening to Allison. The story line is easy to follow. Be prepared to have your heart strings pulled towards the end. Not gonna lie at one point I thought, this is like 10 things I hate about you because of the emotions poured out and you will know what I mean when you get to that point. I choked up during that part. Overall this is an amazing book and you don't want to miss out on this upcoming author.
I’m in love with this book. Allison and Ace stole my heart!!
The book started and I was immediately hooked. Since it is Avery’s first book, I wasn’t expecting it to be so fantastic!!!! I love the way Avery involved all the other characters in the the book.
Avery’s writing is so amazing for a new author. She definitely exceeded my expectations!
Now let’s talk about this awesome couple. Allison is such a sweet girl, you cannot not love her. And Ace… he captures your heart without you even realizing. They are the moon and the sun. The perfect combination.
Even though this book isn’t sad, I definitely cried. There is a chapter that’s super sad but only if you get attached to some things like I do… and the end? it will make you cry from happiness!!
I loved this book so much. And the plot twists? So good!!! I’m so proud of Avery for writing this wonderful book. I cannot wait to read the rest of the series when it comes out!!!
Thank you Avery Kane and Bed And Books PR for the ARC.
Ps: I know this isn’t related to the story at all, but this cover is so pretty!!! I love it!!
The Ruthless Gangster is an amazing debut novel from Avery Kane. This book pulls you into a very dark and ruthless world that leaves you craving more.
Ace and Alison have the perfrct love/hate relationship and it's all Ace's fault, he kidnaps her believing that she did something very bad but, what he doesn't expect is to develop feelings and for the leader of a gang feelings are not things to be had.
Avery has written this book so well that you feel like you are right there in each scene, you can picture the characters and the world around them. I can't wait to read more.
At some point in are life we all go throw a dark time for want ever reason for Ace its his pass for Allison it the crash. How can in the most random way what you didn't know you need and wasn't allowed to have was what you needed all along.
I couldn't put this book down. Truly a rollercoaster! Ace was a sympathetic character from the start, which I adored, but Avery Kane does not shy away from showing us just how ruthless he really is. He was a character I wanted to follow every step of the way. When Allison falls into his hands — and into the clutches of the Shadows themselves — you really have to wonder how she's going to get out of it. The story kept itself going and the characters rolled along with it. I found myself wanting more glimpses into the lives of the addicting side characters! Avery Kane knows how to give you characters you fall in love with and I'll certainly want to see what else this debut author has in store.
This is a wonderfully dramatic read. Allison is a compelling and dynamic character and I really enjoyed reading her story. I loved the enemies to lovers trope and Ace is to die for! Overall a beautifully written story for anyone who loves a little melodrama!
Ruthless Gangster is the debut novel by Avery Kane and first book in The Shadow Sinners Series about Ace and Allison - slow burn, enemies to lovers, kidnapping, bully romance.
Ace is a leader of a gang and is sent on a mission to kidnap Allison. From the start of the novel, I automatically fell in love with Allison. The way Avery introduced and developed Allison’s character allowed me to connect with her early on in the story, I found myself feeling every emotion she did and kept me captivated all throughout. And I say “felt her emotions” literally, as there were some scenes where I honestly felt my heart breaking with her. Her strength and perseverance, despite her life struggles were truly admirable and I loved her.
The pacing was just right. The plot was set up great and presented uniquely. I also love a story with a good support system in the secondary characters. Overall, I enjoyed Ruthless Gangster and can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
First things first, thank you author for providing me an arc copy.
So another disappointing read for me. I was really excited to discover this debut novel because once again, I'm trying to read more romance- new romance books that I think is a cup of my tea. However, this debut book didn't do it for me. 𝐈𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐠𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞? 𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭- 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠. Nothing special, nothing striking just simple and easy to read. It was pretty much mediocre and repetitive most of the times like every other page you could see the same phrase or word being repeated and it just made it even more cringey. It was fast paced so I think that's good.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬/ 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞/ 𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞. They didn't stood out for me. Very generic and cliche like it almost made me feel reading those bad wattpad gangster/ mafia/ mob romance. This was supposed to be dark but it's nothing at all to be honest, it just felt so dull- they just felt so dull and poorly written and executed. There were a few times I did liked the side characters but they were just wasted, like they could have been used for a more great device to make the story more engaging but were wasted.
The leads even bored me. Didn't like them at all, Ace was so annoying. They're just this typical like this After couple most of the times. I was pretty much so done with them tbh.
𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥. Not impressed. Didn't like it at all. I was really hoping for bomb to be dropped but nothing came. So yeah, technically one of the worst book I've read this year.
What a ride, I devoured it!The Ruthless Gangster was captivating, addictive, passionate, brilliant and hot!I was so anxious and at the same time fascinated to see what will happen! As a dark romance novel lover, I really enjoyed this book and am already looking forward to this debut author’s next release!
Ace is an interesting and complex character, He is dangerous, dark but he is also so much more!I don't want to give anything away, but I'm going to say I loved him so much!Allison was fantastic, one of the best heroines!I liked her she was strong! I was great book where the side characters are just as good and developed as the main characters. The bad boy/good girl trope is popular one and this author does it right. It was a dark romance with enemies to lovers trope as well. It’s steamy, and has a I don't know young feel to it. I would like to mention that this novel is not dark dark and though it has a darker premise it could be a little fluff dark for some readers. There were some slow parts at first - when it was unclear what's going on - but in a chapter Or so I appreciated and understood them more. Also, the ending was too sweet, in a way that didn't quite fit the beginning of the book, but after everything the characters went through, for me, it was perfect Without spoiling much, this book has a really satisfying and sweet ending and sets the reader up for the next book in the series!Overall it was a fantastic read.
Where do I start?!? This story took me on an emotional roller coaster. 😭 Be ready to feel all of the feels. It broke my heart then pieced it back together.
This book is so beautifully written! I'm so in love with this authors writing style. The plot is fantastic, the storyline is great and I fell in love with all of the characters! Especially Ace. His character has so much growth throughout the story! I was hooked from the first couple of chapters, and couldn't stop. I needed to find out what happened next.
I'm so surprised that this is this authors first book! I will definitely be reading every thing she puts out.
If you are on the fence about this book, read it. You won't regret it. Wow!
This is a fantastic debut novel from Avery Kane. There are many enemies-to-lovers books out there, however this definitely sets itself apart. From the first heart breaking chapter, it sucks you in to a unique world of gangs, vigilantes and killers. Ace is a broken alphahole, Allison is a broken-hearted girl who has lost that which gave her life meaning and both have shut off their feelings. Several characters beyond Ace and Allison stand out right away and hopefully will get books too. This read is filled with suspense, emotions and some downright fabulous romance. Excellent read.
This book was awesome, I really enjoyed it. From the romance, to the plot twists and world-bulidling. This debut author has done a excellent job in giving us a dark, emotional romance. I liked the writing too! For everyone who's objectifying on the writing- the author mentioned how the book has been re edited and when I gave it a go, I found no mistakes! As a picky reader, I was so happy and absolutely LOVED this book!
As soon as i stumbled across a post about this book instantly started looking forward to it! I added it to my TBR List right away. I started reading it as soon as i could and I really liked it!
Allison and Ace's journey got my attention! I really liked how the ball got rolling quickly and how i wasn't sure what all was going to happen. I enjoyed getting to dig into this world for the first time and that i felt many things with these characters. I just struggled to fully connect.
With The Ruthless Gangster, Ms.Kane has created a good debut! I'm looking forward to more from her!
*I volunteered to read and review a copy of this book from Bed and Books PR / the author*
RATING : ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tropes : high school, ballerina heroine, kidnapping, bully, new adult
In love with this author's writing! This story was addicting and brilliant. The characters were amazing and I loved the pace in the story. I was hooked from the prologue. Alli has been through a lot which leaves all her dreams shattered. She is just going through motions when one day she gets kidnapped and meets Ace.
"What if I fall?" "Then I'll fall with you Kitten."
"I'm your moon and you're my sun"
Ace was more complex, he was the typical bad boy who had trauma and hidden passions and Allison was the perfect person to unlock that buried side of his. There was a lot of push and pull, push mostly from his side but it was reasonable. Allison was the good girl. She was happy living mostly for her loved ones until Ace. There was character development from both ends, Ace brought out the stronger side of Allison and she brought out the softer side of him. There were perfect!
I loveeeed the side characters. I can't wait to know more about all their friends, especially Alli's brother. This was a great start to the series!!
Avery Kane’s debut novel, The Ruthless Gangster, is part of her planned series, The Shadow Sinners.
Kane creatively appoints her characters with a sense of commonality that is deceiving. What appears to be a storyline that may be familiar, surprises her readers, as there is a complexity and emotional depth that takes the story beyond what you may generally see in a debut author.
Relationships are key to understanding this story. Maturity and growth make a mystical challenge for these young adults. Pain and grief break through to light up hearts that must learn to beat again. Surprising and exciting challenges create the canvas for ongoing emotional ties, though not only for our main characters, but side characters that do more than support. They shine and make us want to know so much more about them.
Certainly, Kane will have growing pains, but this is a solid entry into a mature young adult series.
This was such an interesting story I went in blind and I'm so glad I did! This made all the feeling a and twist and turns more breath taking .This world has a lot of potential and character development opportunities.
So this was a debut novel for Avery and it was super good! It follows Allison and Ace who meet in a very unconventional way.. when he’s kidnapping her 👀
I really liked the characters in this book! Allison was super sweet and seemed timid and shy but she never let the kidnapping break her and she fought for what she wanted. And Ace was a ruthless murderer on the outside but he was actually just a hurt, broken man who’d got involved in a life he didn’t really want.
I loved the push and pull between them and how natural it felt when they started getting closer.
This book was also full of plot twists and turns that I didn’t see coming! It also featured a lot of really strong side characters who bought a lot to the story!
This is such a good debut from Kane! The beginning is a little slow but persevere, I promise it’s worth it! Allison and Ace really come into their own after they meet and become way more likeable. It has an interesting storyline that’s different to the usual and I would recommend as an easy read! Also the plot twist is great!
I really like this book. It has a great plot and characters. I don’t like too much bullying with out reason. I see the reason and disagree with it when you see how innocent Allison is. I really enjoyed reading about her and Ace though. Their love is not normal, but they are not normal people. He thought he was getting revenge for his boss, but his boss has it all wrong. Going against him is a huge no-no. I will not spoil the end, but this is an interesting story and i would love to hear more from this author.
