David Levine was an American artist and illustrator best known for his caricatures in The New York Review of Books. Jules Feiffer has called him "the greatest caricaturist of the last half of the 20th Century".
I am a huge lover of fantasy fiction, particularly when it comes to the YA genre, so I was sure that I was going to enjoy Aurelia & The Enemies Of Pity right from the very start – and how right I was! This thrilling tale of high-stakes adventure and battle between good and evil is sure to be a big hit with readers who want something completely absorbing to take your mind off the current state of the world. David Levine has created, with fantastic world building and a fast-paced plot that you’ll struggle to tear your eyes away from, the most perfect opportunity to escape into another world for a while. From the first page to the very last this was a delightful, addictive fantasy that I really couldn’t tear myself away from, and it definitely deserves a place on your reading list.
One of the things I loved most about the novel was the absolutely wonderful writing; the book read like a movie to me in places, I could picture each and every scene so vividly in my mind as I read. As a result, the characters felt so real, so much so that I felt a little sad upon finishing the book and having to say goodbye to them. I sometimes struggle with the world building and setting of fantasy novels, as there is a fine line between creating a believable environment and overloading the reader with information, and Levine struck the balance between the two absolutely perfectly. I was immediately absorbed from the offset, and while the plot and characters had me gripped throughout it was the skill of the writing that elevates Aurelia & The Enemies Of Pity to ‘unputdownable’ status.
I don’t want to give too much away in terms of the plot, as given the relatively short length (clocking in at under 300 pages) this is easily a book you could curl up with and devour in one sitting. In fact, I highly recommend that you do, ideally with a cup of tea or glass of wine to hand! Aurelia has echoes of the dystopian/fantasy novels that we all know and love – think Divergent and The Hunger Games – and I loved the discussion regarding freedom, oppression and fighting for what is right. As well as being such a fun book to get truly lost in it also left me with plenty to think about, and I’m already looking forward to more from this author, as their wonderful writing and vivid storytelling will stay with me for a good while. I highly recommend!
Well, someone said it was time for her to learn about the world on her own. To find her true self and where she actually wants to be! Will Aurelia be able to do it? Or will she become another victim of the community or the enemies of the pity?
“Aurelia & the enemies of pity” was a journey I took after a while, and what a fantasy it was. The storyline was imaginary and vivid with a well-planned, smooth flow towards the ending the author had imagined.
The plot features the warrior woman, Aurelia, as the key character, and the story flows along with her life events, right from her birth. Born as a powered kind, Aurelia gets surrounded by many as her guardians, friends, trainers, and of course them; the enemies of pity. The author has taken a lot of time and space in developing Aurelia’s character as the perfect heroine & outlaw who doesn’t want to fit in the “system”. Towards the middle of the tale, the author introduces the villain Nero and his mighty yet ruthless influence on the storyline. Along with these two key characters flows many heroes and heroines, and collectively they present the tale of “the community”, “the enemy” and the outlaw “Aurelia”. Which end will Aurelia pick at the end? We are yet to know.
Being a casual reader and a fan of fantasy fiction novels, I never felt this was the very first work of the author David Levine, as the storyline was so rich and detailed. From the very beginning, the author slowly and very finely creates the fiction community that consists of Akkadians, Viatorems, Profanes, and the enemies. It was so detailed & clear. For a moment, it felt like I was walking along with these communities. Correct use of curiosity, action, adventure, power, and rage was admirable, and it drowns the reader into the story.
My only concern was with the fast-paced plot twists, as it held me in confusion for a while, and there were few instances where I scrolled back and forth among the pages to understand the connectivity among each scene. However, it gets clear & relatable as you read along with the story. Kudos to the author David Levine for penning such a remarkable work of art & eagerly waiting for the next release in the series.
Loved it! Lots of details that keep you guessing until you get the "OMG, I can't believe I didn't realize that moment." The author makes you pay attention to the details, especially in the dialogue. It's a slow build, but the action and intrigue make the pacing seem faster. This book made me think about a lot of things. I'm going to reread it to see if I missed anything. Also, once I finished the book, I started to miss the characters so much that I need to go back and visit them. I can't wait for the second book in this series.
I gave a new author a chance, and WOW, this book blew my mind. The writing style is beautiful and engaging. The story is full of action: mysticism, and adventure. The pacing of the book is excellent. While waiting for the train, I read a few chapters and got in a chapter or two while getting lunch. However, I suggest reading it all on a rainy day. I don't want to put in any spoilers. Just read the book. You won't be disappointed.
