While his father is drawing off the Hunters, his job is to find a new home for himself and his two sisters. After he helps a young woman fend off a creep, she offers him a ride to his father’s old haunts.
Little does he know that her own family are the enemy.
Sylvia just wants to spend a few weeks of her college summer break to reconcile with her estranged Grandfather. And when she can help Ben out, she does so gladly.
Little does she know that this decision will lead both of them into mortal danger.
Can Ben escape that Hunter family? Can Sylvia handle the dire truth?
I'm a writer, dreamer and creator of worlds. I love taking my readers onto journeys into far-away lands where things are different and yet humans are still the same. I live in the North of Germany, where seagulls scream, the wind never rests, and people are friendly.

Ben McMullen is tasked with finding a pack where he can take himself and his two sisters for safety while his father leads the Hunters away. On his way, a several hundred mile walk, Ben stops at a gas station, hoping to find a ride. He sees a woman who needs help dealing with a creep carrying a knife and trying to force her to come with him.
After Ben was able to easily defeat the man and send him away, in order to thank him for his help, Sylvia was willing to offer him a ride to his father’s old haunts. She did not realize that this action will put both of them into danger because her family is his enemy. Can Ben escape the Hunter family? Is Sylvia ready to learn the truth?
This was my first read by Hannah Steenbock, and while I was excited to experience a fresh take on wolf shifter stories, it just didn’t hit the mark. I love paranormal themes, but this book struggled to hold my interest, and I found myself skimming through sections, hoping something would pull me in.
The story begins with Sylvia almost being kidnapped, only to be saved by Ben, a mysterious stranger. My main issue? Ben, as a wolf shifter, should have had a keen sense of smell to detect the poisoned water, but that detail was oddly missed. I also expected to see some character growth from both Sylvia and Ben, but it just felt flat. Unfortunately, this one was a miss for me.
This is the first story in the "Wolves of the South" series. It is Ben and Sylvia's story. The story is a fairly quick and short read that is down right addicting. The plot is interesting and intriguing. He is tried to find a new pack that he can take his sisters to on his journey he rescues Sylvia. What a journey these two have. This is a fast paced story with action, danger and good twists.
I'm a bit surprised at the high ratings for this book. A bit of a spoiler here, but guy saves a woman from a nasty, possibly deadly, encounter. Later that day, she hides and watches her family torture him? She made no protest or effort to help him and the torture was gruesome. Decided at that point (start of chapter 4), that I was going to quit and find a book to read with a stronger female lead character.
I loved the way this book showed how families like Ben's and Beth's can honour one another and help one another to be honorable. But families like Theo's can encourage one another to be twisted and full of hate and blame.
I look forward to reading more books by Hannah Steenbock.
A quick read, with 2 primary characters moderately developed right off. I found the shifter aspect almost besides the point to the story. Maybe it becomes more central in the next books. I will not be reading any others because there was way too much sadistic violence and violence against women in this story for me. Not in excessive detail but multiple episodes. I had nightmares afterwards.
This story will introduce you to Ben, Sylvia and all who become part of this werewolf pack. It's a brutal introduction about life with those who hate you. Misogynists in the family make life worse, and if the hate is also at werewolves it certainly brings out the worst in people.
His family gets attacked by hunters and he escapes to find refuge for himself and sisters only to come across a young woman. Things start to happen when they meet and can they survive it. Fab read throughout
A good story filled with intrigue, mystery and suspense. They had a believable chemistry which was well written and entertaining to read as the drama surrounding their characters played out.
I requested a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A fast read that introduces a cool world and interesting characters. I loved how the world-building was done, dropped in gently as you went along, and I LOVE family saga type stories, so this is perfect! Definitely picking up the rest of the series.
This book was a great story told from two points of view. Ben and Sylvia become a pair that is unstoppable, and become a force to recon with. By the end of this book nothing can stop them. The cliffhanger ending makes me want to get the next book as quickly as possible.
Nice light shifter romance with a little romance and likable characters. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I hadn’t known when I started this book that I would read all six the books in this series quickly in a row. Once I entered the world that Hannah Steenbock created, I didn’t want to leave.
The Wolves of the South is a romance fantasy series featuring a couple in each book. I love this format and the idea of a family / friends-saga, where we get to see how each relationship develops, so I was excited to pick them up.
In this one, Ben and Sylvia meet and form the basis of the series and the worldbuilding. The worldbuilding is especially done really well, with readers introduced slowly to the shifter world that exists alongside ours, and the Hunters that hound them.
The characters are very sweet, so if you're looking for alpha-holes, "mine" type books, these aren't it. These are empowering, sex-positive and brim full of equality, without being overly sugary sweet. The prose is easy-going and sometimes I would long for more details as the books maintain a rocketing pace, but overall very good.
They are quick reads, and I'd tell myself "only one more chapter!" before bed, only to end up finishing the book :P
