After all of the fantastic build up throughout Cates's Venom run while peppering Knull into Thor, Silver Surfer, and Guardians of the Galaxy, I was anxiously awaiting this. I have to say I felt somewhat let down. Outside of a couple of cool moments () this was a lot of filler without a lot of story. I did really like how Knull's opposite tied into the Marvel universe. That was a nice touch. But the whole middle of this book is just wheel spinning until the final issue. The art, though, was consistently very good.

Woof. So THAT was what they've been building up to for what seems like forever? An overblown deus ex machina ending featuring out-of-character characters, yet another dilution of the bond between Thor and Mjolnir, no resolution to various dangling plot threads from the tie-in books... and all wrapped up in Ryan Stegman's fairly average Todd McFarlane-influenced artwork. I actually felt like I was reading an issue of Spawn at one point.

This barely scraped 3 stars for me and that was mainly because I thought the build-up in issues three and four was actually quite exciting... a shame it was totally let down by the godawful ending.

A lot of the tie-in books were considerably better than this core title, which can't be what they were going for, surely? Another damp fart of an 'event' from Marvel. When Knull quoted Terry Pratchett in the final issue I actually felt a bit dirtied... I expect Cates thought we wouldn't catch it as being a quote.

Kind of a let down, King in Black suffers from being too generic, over the top and unnecessarily connected to the entire Marvel catalogue, it's the same old crossover event drivel we've been getting every year, seriously, tell me a recent event that has not been like this one, there's absolutely no stakes, tension or drama anymore, its one massive war after another, and there was no need for King in Black to happen so soon after Absolute Carnage, the only thing Donny Cates really nailed on this event was Eddie Brock, he turned Venom into a powerhouse.

I liked this story dispute my personal prejudice. Which is I have always been a Spider-man fan (per Brand New Day), so I could not be a Venom fan. This story does revolve a lot around Venom, which considering is with symbiots, make perfect sense.

Good artwork and a good story and an epic storyline spanning the entire Marvel Universe. The King in Black has come to Earth not to conquer but to destroy. Even the combined might of all Earth's heroes and villains will not make a difference. This is most evident in the death of a hero at the end of the first issue.

I am not even a Venom fan but I liked this story and got new respect for Eddie Brock. Of course Spider-man was regulated to nurse maid or just to fill a couple of panels, but dispite that a very good crossover story, that I think really delivers.

Look, I've been a sucker for Donny Cates' Marvel work since he arrived, but King In Black might actually take the cake. The culmination of all of his Venom work, it's a big, bombastic, cinematic finale that still keeps Eddie Brock front and centre even as the rest of the Marvel Universe gets subsumed in symbiote goo.

Even with everything coming to a head, Cates manages to find a way to throw a few curveballs into the mix. The revelation regarding the God Of Light that counters the King In Black is at once totally out of left field and so obvious that I'm surprised no one's ever done it before, and the end of Eddie's character arc under Cates manages to be a great ending and a brand new beginning as well.

And of course, it all looks gorgeous because Ryan Stegman pencilled it all. I really hope to see him and Cates working together on something else soon, because they know how to tell a story together, it's all very impressive.

Did you really expect me to not to like this? Do you even know me by now?

This event was really good!

It picks up with Knull arriving on Earth and heroes trying their all but they can't stop the lord of the abyss from taking over and multiple hero deaths happen, the heroes and earth itself overtaken by the symbiote and dragons and so it falls on Venom and the Avengers to stop it as Knull has to fight Thor, Silver surfer and ultimately his opposite. Will Eddie be able to defeat Knull and save everyone? Whatever happened to Dylan? Who is the opposite of Knull?

This volume answers all of it and more and focuses on great heroic moments for Eddie and the threat of Knull that has been building for such a long time and its great to see so many plot threats that Cates started way back come to fruition here and the art is freaking insane, you can feel the darkness while reading it and that image of post-apocalyptic coming to your head. This is Donny Cates love letter to Venom and its okayish in the end and it just like he promised "a big summer event" and he delivers on it, giving such cool scenes, easter eggs and tying it all together in the end! Great one time read for sure!

Blah, blah, blah...About the only thing this really has going for it is the consistent artwork throughout. I'm really getting tired of these company-wide crossovers that have to drag in every other book, like it or not. And this is so similar to the recent Carnage crossover as to be almost the same thing. Time to tone it down a bit and focus on some smaller scale drama for Venom, if that's even possible anymore, given where he (they) end up at the conclusion of this. It also seems like Cates' is getting drawn a bit too thin with all of his commitments--this really isn't that great of a story, either. I think I just talked myself down from 3 stars to 2 on this one...

Ryan Stegman killed it in the interiors. The art was superb.

While I was never a big fan of Knull, and much preferred the simpler, human story Cates was creating with Eddie and Dylan, Cates still managed to turn this around and make something special out of it. Marvel cosmos is complicated and confusing, but I hope people who are into that enjoyed Cates’ tinkering with it. And I’m sure they will.

I think because I preferred the more human elements of this venom run, I enjoyed Absolute Carnage more. But this was still a fun treat.

A thoroughly predictable affair, King in Black is basically just cut-and-paste action scenes from any other major Marvel event with the addition of numerous deus ex machinas. It's a fun read if you really love to see one Marvel hero yell "You've gotta get out of there!" to another Marvel hero ad infinitum. Also a good book if you enjoy the drained look on Tony Stark's face when he realizes that a plan isn't going to pan out. Ryan Stegman nailed that one, then repeated it.

All that complaining aside, there are good pieces to King in Black. Deus ex machina moments are fun, even if they're overused, and they often lead to excellent splash art from Stegman. The art in general is superb - Stegman continues his wonderful work from the Venom series, even if Donny Cate's writing abilities have cratered.

It's hard to appreciate a world-ending event that's basically settled after the first issue. So much happens in so few pages - unlike other recent Marvel events, there's absolutely zero downtime here, to the point that major things seem to be happening off-screen. I'm sure some of the spin-off series offer a fuller picture of events, but that shouldn't be how this works. Just include the story in the story. Crazy idea, I know.

Currently reading; will update, finalize and rate when series is complete.

02-22-21 This review covers Issues 1-4 (SPOILER WARNING AHEAD!):

Well, as a long-time Venom fan and reader, and a fan of Donny Cates work, I'm sad and a little surprised to call this series somewhat underwhelming after the amazing set-up.

Sure, the requisite setpieces are there, and fun to read/look at. (The world is covered in a veil of Knulls' Symbiote-Dragons, and the Marvel Heroes are being swarmed and taken over, and everyone must team up.)

But there's no HEART to this series; there's very little Venom in this series [those who have read the first issue will know why], and, Knull, despite his power, is an unengaging foe who we know very little about still. And it's clearly setting up Dylan in a BIG way for the future. (The main Venom title continues to be reasonably compelling, as it has been since the "Venom: Space Knight" arc!!)

My biggest gripe (and it's not specific to King in Black) is the reliance and overuse of comic studios on EVENTS. There are now MULTIPLE events each year for both DC and Marvel, along with many unneeded tie-ins. (For instance, the FF have been derailed multiple times since their return by events [War of Realms, Empyre, King in Black, etc.), which hinders storytelling in their own title.

****
POST-COMPLETION:
4 stars (More for the build-up than the actual KiB mini-series.)
Spoilers ahead:

Well, this was an ending... A somewhat underwhelming one, IMO.

Venom was largely absent from this series until the final issue, despite his series being the primary vehicle for this story. [The Venom tie-in issues were wonderfully strong and evocative.)

And an underwhelming ending to a potentially cool character in Knull. The change to Eddie/Venom seem interesting, but because of the magnitude of them, I think that it will not last very long, as Marvel seems intent on not allowing ACTUAL permanent change to their characters, even when it's hard-earned and complementary to the characters.

I didn't get most of the tie-in series (other than Black Cat and Valkyries, which I already followed), and why did they need to interrupt ongoing series that were only tangentially involved? (The Fantastic Four particularly have been hit hard by "Event Fatigue" adn unneeded crossovers..)

Another good Venom-based event to close out the run. King in Black was big, and I’m not sure that it lived up to the hype, but the art was cool and I had fun reading it.

Good fun.
Suitably crazy and entertaining as a follow-up to Absolute Carnage with unexpected tie-ins and a solid enough focus on Eddie and Dylan, the two focal points of Donny's run on Venom.

Could it have been darker? More violent/brutal? Sure.
Were there a few weak points and things that could have been better? Probably.
BUT, I will admit that as events in comics go and big crossovers go (of which we've had far too many in the past 2 decades), this was one I actually enjoyed binge-reading.

CAVEATS:
1. The tie-ins oscillated between "damned good!" (Black Cat, Venom, Wiccan/Hulkling, Valkyries, Thunderbolts) and largely meh and "would-have-been-fine-without" (Captain America, Namor, Iron Man/Doctor Doom, Scream). So the good ones, for sure, READ THEM!
2. There were some weird tie-ins that you can read or not but I recommend for the entertainment value and cos they were decent: Immortal Hulk, Ghost Rider, The Union, Gwenom v Carnage (this last one being just the wierdest out-of-nowhere comic to be part of this series with no consequence for the main series really.
3. The main series has highs and lows but by far the highs outweigh the lows and though it feels like there was a kind of stale-mating partway in despite things moving at a brisk clip and a kind of marking-time happening when things slowed a tad, overall the short nature of the main series (confined to a tight 5 issues only!) really helped it from becoming a bloated mess as many events have and by the end it all tied together nicely with more than a couple of well crafted surprises in there.
4. The series showed how well Cates knows and has a fondness for writing these characters on whom he focusses + there was more than a little nostalgia thrown into the mix. It was overall a decent balance.
5. While it was a pretty straight-forward and simplistic series with a healthy amount of bombast thrown in the mix (like Iron Mans efforts in the latter half of the series which should really put Tony's brain in a different place hereafter, I mean c'mon!), I liked that literally no one could fix the problem in any of the conventional ways and the normal Marvel go-to of Reed Richards, Stark, Strange, etc were all basically useless. It was a Venom/symbiote event through and through. AND I did not see that ending coming, seriously.

I don't doubt people will have complaints and what-n0t but overall I read it, enjoyed the crap out of it and would recommend it to fans of crazy, quirky comics and Venom/Eddie Brock in particular.
Compared to 90% of "events" Ive read in the last several years, this ranks amongst the better ones by far - though awkardly it doesn't necessarily beat out Absolute Carnage which was just a heavy-metal mind-freak out of nowhere.
If Im honest, for me it's like the battles for Helms Deep vs the battle of Minas Tirith. The latter was without question, the bigger, the more badass and with the bigger stakes and space to really be crazy-cool to watch, but somehow the smaller, dirtier more close-up madness of the former is almost as good and in brief moments maybe better.

Bottom line: Read it. It's good.

Fundamentally, this isn't as much a crossover as a Venom comic guest-starring lots of other heroes. But Eddie and his son get the most notable plot beats. Meanwhile, if there is a plot beat from someone else ... it pretty much disappears into the void. Maybe the answer is found in those other comics? It's hard to say. (What happens to Thor? Why was he missing and what's his fate? What's this about Namor raising upon darkness guys? What's the story of Blade and Dracula? So many things that we don't get resolution on!)

The result is just barely coherent, and it's not even that interesting of a story besides: just lots of fighting against symbiote monsters.

A suitably large scale event to close off Donny Coates’s excellent Venom run. I’m looking forward to reading the tie-ins as this event clearly pulled in a ton of characters. Epic scope, epic battle, epic art, epic fun.

Inherit darkness,\ despair is symbiotic,\ light the force of life.
#HAIKUPRAJNA - Review: King in Black

"Dylan, isn't your cat a symbiote?"

King in Black caps off the Venom saga by Donny Cates. I am a fan of all the things in this event; I like Cates's writing and have enjoyed seeing his stuff appear in other Marvel books; I enjoy Ryan Stegman's Spider-Man art; even got behind the nihilistic God of all Darkness and EVIL that was Knull and the concept of creator versus Venom-symbiotes (which I am think are all dragons now?); It was cool, in an issue Tony Stark technomancies a dragon and pilots a symbiote Celestial.

"Luckily... That's exactly why I invented Extremis."

But the tie-ins and prequels were much more fun to read, Black Cat's tie-in and even Absolute Carnage were both better examples of the whole symbiote craze of the past few years. Heroes job to Knull while Venom gives a depressive monologue to nobody about how it's all hopeless and that the heroes stand no chance while Knull sweeps them until they Captain Universe the problem away (wait, is this Spider… Geddon? It's a trope at this point.)

"The Enigma Force... Solved."

This story has a lot of heart, the elements are sound, and even the peripheral stories are good but these pieces fail to come together in the main books for King in Black.

As mega comic events go, this was one of the better ones. We had the seemingly unstoppable villain, the heroes never giving up, and then a Deus Ex Machina ending that seems to be pretty common with comic book finales. Still, it did make sense in the overall story.

While I've said in previous reviews I'm not a big fan of the retconning that was going on in this series, when it was all said and done it was a good story with good art, so I guess in this case it all worked out.

I read most of the crossover volumes, but really all you need is right here.

I'd give this a thumbs up.

❝ No matter how fast light travels darkness is always there waiting

I'm delving into the Marvel Universe, and as someone who hasn't read it extensively, this comic truly blew me away.

The artistry is stunning, and the emotional depth of the story gave me goosebumps!

I should mention that my prior knowledge of the Knull timeline was a real asset; without it, I might have felt lost and missed out on the incredible experience. The stakes were incredibly high, and I savored every moment. What a fantastic journey!

Not a fan of Marvel since most of their stories are constructed with a predictable formula, aimed to please fanboys.

But I read this one just for the heck of trying something new, especially since I really liked the Venom movie.

Story: boring and predictable
Art: Amazing! 💟💟💟 A real treat for the eyes.

While King in Black does suffer from some event bloat in which most tie-in issues are unnecessary, the core event paired with he final volume of Cates' Venom makes for a great read.

I really do like the culmination of this series, but I hate how it's collected here. This book doesn't have the complete story (the rest would be in Venom Vol. 6 which isn't out yet at the time I'm writing this UGH). As is, it feels like I just read the summary on wikipedia and missed out on a LOT of key plot twists and character moments.

Tldr: either wait until you can get your hands on Venom Vol. 6, or if Marvel decides to release a King in Black omnibus so you can read everything in one go.
