Darklands Online: Book 2

Rate this book
When Kurt followed his brother into the world of Darklands Online, he expected a game like any other. What he found was a world more realistic than he could have ever imagined. The deeper he delved into the fantastic world of eternal night, the more Kurt suspected that something was amiss. It was only when he found that he was being manipulated by a rogue artificial intelligence that Kurt realized how far afield his journey had taken him.

Now, Kurt finds himself drawn back into the world with his brother and his new friends, Bhae and Carmen. The war between the powers of light and dark rage on even as a mysterious new faction joins the fray. New zones and monsters await as well as all too familiar dangers that stalk the night. All the while, Kurt yearns to learn what the A.I. Noctura has planned with her new found freedom. The adventure continues in Darklands Book 2.

LitRPG is often a hit and miss for me. Many books in the genre are poorly written, blatantly sexist, or both.
Darklands Online is different and is therefore my favorite LitRPG series. David Bushman is a very talented author who puts a lot of care into his books and it shows. Darklands Online is a fun adventure that doesn't try to be anything but entertainment. In times of pretentiousness, this, too, is like a fresh breeze.
Darklands Online 2 starts where book 1 has left us off. Once again, Kurt jumps into the mysterious and exciting virtual world of the game Darklands Online where he has to face monsters, battles and a conscious AI with its own agenda. Once again, he's accompanied by his brother Greg and the two warrior girls Bae and Carmen.
This book is like playing an MMORPG: quests, loot, dungeons and leveling. All of this is typical for the genre but the author manages to serve the tropes and write likable characters and great dialogues at the same time.
I particularly like the two girls Bae and Carmen. They're badass and witty. Without them, Kurt and his brother would have been toast more than once. Often in LitRPG female characters are sexy bimbos or damsels in distress without any particular personality. Not in Darklands Online.
David Bushman has a great talent for writing female characters. Being a gamer girl myself I would love to hang out with Carmen and Bae and go raid a dungeon together.
I also like that both female characters are playing damage dealers and are not healers or other supporting characters, like in other books.
This is how modern female characters should be: self-confident but not pretentious.
I listened to the audio version and once again, Jessica Weyman and David Reimer did a fantastic job duetting the book.
I highly recommend this book to fans of LitRPG and fantasy action adventures. If possible, pick up the audio and enjoy the ride!
I already have downloaded Darklands Online 3 and am looking forward to diving into it!

After leveling up his first day Kurt once again travels into Darklands Online to play with his brother. With a new update comes new challenges as well as manipulations from the AI Nocturna. Together with his brother and his newfound friends, Bhae and Carmen, they face new monsters and dungeons in this land of never-ending night. Just what awaits them with this rogue AI remains to be seen in this newest installment of Darklands Online.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Much like with the first book I had problems putting it down. I wanted to know what happened next rather than stopping to do whatever task I had at hand, normally clocking into work. The characters were further developed and we learned more about Bhea and Carmen. Such as the fact that one of the girls are hispanic, at least partially. I thought it was an interesting little tidbit, but I can't remember now which of the girls it was. I want to say Carmen, but I could be wrong. It was in the scene about eating tacos.

I am curious about what will happen in book 3 due to how book 2 ends. I know he will be able to get a message out about what happened, but I am curious how long it will last as well as what will be found. I mean it wasn't completely his fault after-all. Yes, I am aware I am being vague. I don't like spoilers. This book again stops in a good stopping place where you don't feel like you are missing the point of this book in the series, which I enjoy.

I still can't say that I like Greg in this book. He complains so frequently that he's hard to love. I know his situation and everything and I'm sure that has impact on it, but he's petulant. Grins was a very small part of this book, so I can't say if he is still my favorite character or not. I am curious about that giant creature they fought in the dungeon and if we will see it again in a later book.

Completely can say without hesitation that I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed book 1 and hope that I get a chance to read others in this series, however long it may become.

Darklands Online is a fully immersive VR game like nothing Kurt had ever experienced. He started to play to spend time with his brother Greg, but now Kurt has become the champion of a growing AI named Nocturna who manifested a few storyline in the game. It's a battle between the light and the dark, but Nocturna wants to carve a new path with Kurt to do her bidding. He's curious, but he wonders what exactly the AI wants and what trouble has he gotten himself into.

This is the second book in this LitRPG series, and it picks up right where we left off, stepping it up a notch or three. Now that the reader has had an introduction to the world, I felt so much more invested in the story and characters. We learn even more about Kurt, Greg, and their new friends, Bhae and Carmen. While the four of them make a great adventuring party, there is tension in the group and secrets under the surface. More action, new monsters, and new antagonists. Plus the AI is growing and trying new things. I'm eager to find out what she has planned. We also get peeks at the company and programmers who created the game. They're lots of layers to the plot. Easy to read and loads of fun. I can't wait to dig into the next one.

These books just get better as the characters develop. I love the Darklands locations and the story lines. I hope David continues to write and develop more episodes for this series and cant wait for the next instalment.

Book one may have weeded anyone with discernment but I had hoped the series would recover. Levels don't matter until they do. Skills and abilities are random until the plot needs them. The game seems less engaging than the book.

Very intense

This one had a very slow start and had given up on this more than once. However, once the action starts, you won't be able to put this down
