About the author

Charles Buechele was born in 1985 in Seattle, Washington, but his life has been anything but static, moving from place to place and collecting stories along the way. Despite a rocky start with reading, thanks to a clever trick by his older sister, eight-year-old Charles discovered the magic of books and never looked back. Initially drawn to the wonders of nature, he studied entomology and botany in college. However, his passion for storytelling led him to switch paths, earning a bachelor's degree in English and Art, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University. Now settled in Texas with his trio of quirky cats and an ever-growing jungle of houseplants, Charles crafts tales that captivate and inspire.
Charles also writes and publishes a variety of fun, quirky, and spooky children's books under the playful pen names Achelles Ubreech and Esau C. Helbelcher. These alternate identities allow him to explore different worlds and storytelling styles, bringing joy and a touch of spookiness to young readers everywhere.

Intriguing and enjoyable debut novel

From the Nightly Shore presents a well developed and unique world in which a diverse group of teens attempt to understand and come to grips with an underlying realm of elemental energy that only they can see or access.

The story centers on itinerant loner Corbin White, son of a broken family whose absent father dumps him off in yet another town to stay with an uncle he barely knows and navigate another new school. The book is presented as Corbin's journal, complete with missing pages and words obscured by ketchup stains, lending it a more personal tone and intimacy than your average first person narrative.

This is not always beneficial, however, as few of the other characters are well developed, and all but a few blur into an obscure collection of faceless misfits who serve as little more than background noise. Buechele would have been better served to limit the supporting cast to half a dozen more active players and relegate the rest to one or two mentions. Too often a key event centers on someone we don't really know and barely ever see again.

The redeeming strengths of the story are its witty humor - Buechele has a quick wit and clever turn of phrase that gives levity to nearly every page - and the developing relationship between Corbin and the young girl Jamie who possesses abilities she is as yet unaware of. Their interactions are honest, heartwarming, and true to life in a way that is endearing and captivating. I hope to see more of them in future installments.

The other great strength of this take is its well thought out sub-world, with its system of elemental energy that is beautifully described and reasonably articulated. My only complaint is the lack of any real practacal impending threat from what amounts to an absent antagonist, much like Corbin's father, who only appear in passing as secondary figures. The stalkers bring fear without ever causing any actual serious harm (save one offscreen mauling of a minor character's energy), and the enigmatic Thorn is more a mystery than a threat, until the very end, by which time it is too late for threats. But given this is the first book in a series, one might expect to see increased danger in subsequent volumes.

Lastly, while this book is presented as a transcribed journal, and thus some grammatical leeway must be allowed, the work is riddled with missing prepositions and conjunctions (and, to, the, is), as well as incorrect comma placement, making it a bit of a challenge at times not to trip over sentence structure. Most of these are minor, and do not interfere with comprehension, but they are many.

All in all I highly recommend this author, and look forward to reading further works (once they have visited an editor).

A mix of fantasy and realism, 'From the Nightly Shore' is what I believe the Young Adult category needs.

Posed as the journal of Corbin White, this book offers a quick wit, a unique magic, and most importantly, fantastic characterization. Though a fantasy exploring the use of energy, the way Buechele wrote his characters and their subsequent feelings is so real. They become people you know, people you understand, and people you feel with. Having such authentic emotions and reactions sells the plot and everything that surrounds Corbin and those who interact with him.

The one hiccup is that while the book presents such an honest and genuine life, it focuses more on that realism rather than the fantasy so unique to Buechele's novel. The magic is still there and still expounded upon, but it is not a focus and (in my opinion) it should have a bit more focus.

Overall, I love the realism, I love the unique world, and I love the full premise.

I definitely recommend this book.

A Captivating Paranormal Adventure You Won’t Soon Forget!

I was drawn into Corbin White's eerily lovely universe from the first page on, where intense emotional conflicts and paranormal secrets coexist. The world-building is just captivating, the characters are nuanced and captivating, and the tale is captivating.

With its secrets, treachery, and mind-bending turns, Corbin's journey is both heartbreaking and exciting, and it kept me flipping pages late into the night.

From the Nightly Shore is a must-read if you enjoy complex supernatural thrillers with enduring characters and an intriguing plot. I'm excited to see where the White Raven Chronicles will go next, and this debut book is sure to become an instant hit.

Engaging story, great pacing and relatable characters

I really enjoyed this book! The writing is engaging, and the story has a great balance of mystery and tension. The pacing was good, it kept me hooked, and it also didn’t feel rushed. I especially liked the supernatural elements blended so seamlessly into the real world. That made the story feel more immersive. The characters felt good and real, with their flaws and personalities. Overall, it’s a gripping read with strong storytelling, and I’m excited to read the next part of the series!

The powers and magical aspects of the world that Corbin, the main character encounters are well developed and the plot is gripping. However, the reason I kept turning pages was that I cared about Corbin. Although this book is a fantasy, it is a very realistic picture of the struggles that teens face to understand their family of origin, to find true friendship and to figure out where they belong in this crazy world that they are living in. I highly recommend this book.
