Heir of Svartån is a traditional young adult portal fantasy featuring a Norse inspired fantasy world, as well as elements of progression fantasy and Gamelit. It is perfect for those who enjoy stories by Anthea Sharp, Ramy Vance, or Michael Chatfield.
A teen-aged girl and her friend discovers the land in her favorite RPG really exists when they suddenly find themselves living in it!
The title and cover of this book first caught my attention but it really grabbed me when I discovered the premise of the story. My favorite genre to read is Epic Fantasy especially Sword and Sorcery but these days too many of them just don’t seem to live up to the stories of Tolkien, Williams, Jordan, Brooks to name a few of the authors who have been my mainstay reads over the years. Therefore, I have found myself turning more toward Thrillers, Suspense, and Mysteries except when one of my favorites publish a new book. Alas we have lost too many of the best of them over the years so my selection of Fantasy authors have been diminishing.
I am also a big fan of Fantasy RPGs so this book seemed to be a perfect selection for me. It contained all the things I enjoy about an RPG. A good storyline which to me is as important as the quest, the quest, terrific characters trying to figure out how to do what they need to do in order to complete their objectives. This book allowed me to vicariously experience all of it without having to do it myself.
I very much look forward to reading the rest of the series. So if you enjoy Epic Fantasy stories and/ or RPGs you are going to want to give this a read. Fair warning this series appears to be going forward as a single book per each major objective but that just reminds me of using each main objective as a good stopping point in an RPG game so doesn't bother me at all as each story is complete within itself. I do not yet know how many books will be in the series but I believe there are currently four available.
I did receive a Review copy of this book which in no way influenced my opinion of it. My opinion is given voluntarily.
If you have been through a sexual assault this book may trigger you. This book was really excellent. It would have been a 5 star if it had just taken out a possible trigger for people. Even for me the amount of time spent on that subject was unnecessary, which is really sad as the book otherwise is one of the best I’ve read.
The author certainly has a wonderful way with words. The book sucks you in and you’re in the adventure along side Ina. The main characters are well thought out and extremely likeable. They all have wonderful qualities but are also not perfect which makes them more relatable. I love the basic moral of the story (I won’t spoil). The story itself is mind blowing with all of its twists and turns. There is a lot of really cool backstory and lore but it’s not overdone and you don’t get it all at once. You get small bits here and there which make it awesome. It was clearly well thought out and a lot of time was spent on making it perfect. (Minus that trigger warning part). I love the creatures in it and their abilities. The fighting scenes are all exciting and described well/created perfectly.
So to sum it up a fantastic book, if you have that trigger warning just skip through the pages, they are not necessary for the story line. Also if you read the prequel Visions of Lohikarra and didn’t love it, don’t worry read this book anyway. The prequel was okay, I read it and wasn’t sure if I wanted to read this book. This book is wayyyy better than that one. So definitely give this one a go! I do intend on buying the rest of the books in the series and will be recommending it to my friends/book group.
Ina lives in Fargo, North Dakota, with her best friend, abusive mother and her mother's boyfriend. She can't wait for her 18th birthday when she can leave home. Video games have been a good escape and when she is pressured by her mother's boyfriend all sorts of weird happens when she and her friend are portaled to the game world. Only it's real! Adventure and danger ensue. I like the action, humor, and slow burn romance. I look forward to the next book.
Heir of Svartan(The Lohikarran Chronicles #1) by L.L. Nelson is a great book and I definitely recommend. In this book a Lohikarra video game was an escape from her abusive mother where she could be strong and confident. When a freak accident transports her and her best friend Mattie to the real Lohikarra it is no longer a game and she is the rightful heir of Svartan. Unfortunately she is not the only one claiming the title. If she fails she risks losing everything.
Love this start to the series! Ina was relatable and lovable, as was Haldrek! I loved the depth of the lore and the new, refreshing twist on dragons! Great storyline and satisfying ending. Can’t wait for the next in the series. The prequel novella was great too!
This was super good. The beginning reminded me of Skyrim and it had me hooked. Ina is a character that you just want to succeed, she’s sweet and kind and unfortunately raised by monsters masquerading as “parents”. When she finally finds her place and strength is glorious. I received a free copy to review.
Slow start, and story dragged a bit. There are several grammar mistakes, but not a bad plot line.
For my clean readers: language, but no f-bomb. Violence-attempted murder, fighting, war battles, and abusive relationship with parent. Mom's boyfriend is also guilty of unwanted advances, lying, and being lecherous. Romance-kissing.
The young main character starts without much confidence, but she has a dear friend, meets more good and helpful people, and this turns into a great adventure. A wise dragon adds to the story. Fun and clever book!
An adventure with a bit of mystery. Twists and turns made it exciting. Ina Svanunge is a very likeable character and so is Haldrek. A wonderful story that is well written and worth the read.
One measure of story quality is how well the author pulls the reader into the characters, intrigues, really the entire story setting. In this story the author pulls the protagonist into the story from her difficult life in Fargo. She is more than surprised, but Lohikärra is familiar from video games with her friends.
Her upbringing disadvantages her, but she adapts because she has to. It’s truly life or death. She lets her resolve to be the best for the people who are now her people.
This is a heart warming story with serious action, resilience and care for humanity.
