Lyssa’s ill-prepared for life at Krakenvale Academy. The other druids resent her. They’ve been training all their lives for this. She’s behind in all her classes, and now she’s struggling to cast the simplest of spells.
It’s going to be a tough year.
Everyone thinks she’s the only one who can make notorious criminal Raphael undo his curses. Even if it means facing the father who wants her dead.
She can’t even bond with her familiar.
As the year progresses, it’s clear something is wrong. Her magic is failing. Her gryff won’t even look at her. And if she can’t find a way to restore her powers, there’ll be more than her career at stake.
Can Lyssa find a way to fight back before she loses her magic, her future… and her life?
You’ll love this Academy fantasy, because of the twists, turns, and magical surprises.
This is book one of the Druid enforcer Academy series and the main character is Lyssa Eldridge, who is now starting at Krakenvale Academy, where enforcers are trained for their jobs out in the magical world. Lyssa doesn’t know much about their history or laws, having only recently decided on this as her career path and she hasn’t even had to complete the normal entry exams other students had to. Only the best of the best are supposed to get through to study there and some are somewhat put out, that Lyssa has been given a place, due to her infamy. The person greeting her at the academy doors, is supposed to be her guide, but Killian hates her, whether for her father’s true identity or the manner in which she was granted a place in the academy. It was only the massive battle against the black mage Raphael, her real father, not that she ever calls him that having been brought up in the human world with human parents, where she and her gryff Stormclaw somehow managed to stop him, along with many others but he managed to kill and maim many. She was asked to see him in prison after he awoke from his coma, but such visits were extremely unpleasant and unwanted by her. The Councilman and the circle want her help in finding a cure for all those bitten, left with the rage curse effects. She gets the sharp end of the stick with Killian as their Combat Magic Instructor, but does manage to make two friends, Zara who let her stay in her dorm room after an unpleasant surprise was left in Lyssa’s, and Kyle an Earth druid, who is looked down upon as being weak, with earth being his main element. As usual, there is a bully boy, Xavier, the son of High Enforcer Silas Thorton, one of the most famous and powerful! Lyssa soon finds she is behind most of the other first years students, in most of their classes, being at a disadvantage to those who have trained with their druid powers all of their lives. One of the classes involves all the students finding and bonding with a familiar and while she almost gets one showing an interest in her, it soon disappears as all the ghost like creatures suddenly run away. Weeks later she still hasn’t managed to bond with any familiar and also finds even the most basic of magic is almost impossible to perform. She was even having problems with Stormclaw, after she was badly injured in a race against Xavier, where he cheated and caused her injury, or had one of his many minions interfere. Now Stormclaw won’t even allow her near him! Something is seriously wrong and it’s happened after her visits to Raphael. She finds out some shocking news about his imprisonment and the powers of Raphael as opposed to the power of the whole of the circle, which may leave her in immense danger. If Lyssa can’t get her magic back, then she will not be able to pass even the simplest of exams to become an enforcer. There are no second tries at this academy, unlike her previous school. She will need to dig deep and however much she doesn’t want her only friends to put themselves in danger, she shouldn’t have to do this alone. She only really has one option left once she realises what is wrong, but the cost of doing it will completely ruin her life, her chance at this career and may even end in her own death. She has to follow a dangerous path, break many rules and only hope everything turns out right in the end! After all that, I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book and I want to see her and Stormclaw playing again and more about the mysterious familiar. Lots of twists and turns, with magical surprises and danger all the way! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
With the reappearance of Lyssa, Familiar Magic feels somewhere between old, comfortable slippers and fresh and exhilarating. Lyssa finds herself at the exclusive Krackenvale Academy where many already dislike her simply because she was given a place rather than earning the right to be there. Or maybe it is her attitude that they don't like. Even her would be familiars don't like her. And yet, here she is, with all hopes pinned on her, that she can make Rafael undo his curse. How us she to do this when she can't manage even the most basic of spells has yet to be determined. With her characteristic wit and excellent story telling, C S Churton has given us an excellent start to what is sure to be one of her best series yet.

Lyssa is back and has entered Enforcer Academy but things end up going wrong as usual. But this made the story a hoot to read. Lyssa makes a few friends but many enemies and things are going wrong with her magic and the rest of her life at school. I laughed and groaned and was widely entertained. A few scenes were outright a blast and hard to read I was laughing so hard. these scenes were in between other sad scenes were I was rooting for Lyssa and amazed at the trouble she finds. Just a great story and start to a new series.
Familiar Magic (Druid Enforcer Academy Book 1) by C. S. Churton is a fantastic story that I have loved reading. This is book number one in this fantastic start to a brand new series and I can not wait to read the rest. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about magic and everything paranormal.

A great new academy series! Well written, you are pulled into the story of Lyssa right away. Finding herself at an academy she didn't apply for, she learns more about herself and her heritage. Add in humor, magic, mystery and suspense makes the book even better! More YA than sexy, it is a refreshing change in the paranormal academy genre.

In the continuing adventures of Druid Lyssa, we see her start her journey to becoming an enforcer for the Druid community. If she thought Dragondale was hard, Krakenvale is a whole other plane. Daddy issues, hypogryff issues, study issues and people issues, it’s almost like old times. However, darkness is creeping in and she’s been cursed. Read the book to see how it plays out.
I love this book. It deserves 5 stars. There wasn't anything I hated about it. Great writing n the story fantastic. I can't wait for the next in the series. Thank you. Great writing
