Monet: Qis is everything I have ever desired in a mate. The lovely little snake shifter ticks all my boxes: the ones that make me want to wrap him up in a warm blanket and the ones that make me want to blanket him myself. I’d love to bathe in the ache of his tortured soul. His emotional pain calls to the most basic desires I have. What I want—no, what I need more than anything else is to take care of him. I’m going to connect with him; I’m going to make him feel his pain and learn to love it. I’ll shatter him from the inside out and then put the pieces back together just the way he needs them.
War is coming to Houston, and I’m the man Fate sent to defend the city. Who better than an Ouroboros to stand by my side?
Qis: Meeting Monet forces me to look in the mirror, but all I see is a stranger. Not just the person on the inside; the man on the outside is just as foreign. I don’t know if I trust him as much as he wants me to, but giving him my heart, soul, and body isn’t a choice. The Fates have woven our strings together, and they don’t seem to care how weird that is. He shatters me and feeds my soul, but time is running out on us.
My father is bringing war to Houston, and Monet has to be there. I may not know how I can help, but I’ll stand by his side to the end and devour anyone that gets in my way.
Capture is a continuation of the story begun in Pass: Shattered Pawns Book One. This is not a standalone. Expect to uncover more of the overarching plot centered around a war between the gods, plenty of flaming hot scenes between a Dom and his sub, and find out the reason Qis is the favorite brother. Trigger Warning: Human readers: This book contains fictional scenes of torture, physical and psychological trauma, and actions that humans consider war crimes. It also depicts a loving, healing, consensual, fulltime complete power exchange D/s relationship involving sadomasochism, including things such as knife and blood play and biting. If you are concerned about any of these, please proceed with caution.
Non-human readers: This book contains scenes of war time actions, as well as standard, consensual, primal mating behaviors between an Ouroboros and a Seraph.
Jennifer Cody lives in Small Midwestern Town, USA, aka the sticks of Kansas. She has three kids and a Beardo she loves. Her sleep schedule is weird, so messages sent at midnight usually get answered relatively promptly. She reads all kinds of mm romance and urban fantasy, but her favorites are gay-for-you, small-town romances and over the top urban fantasy romances. Her own writing doesn’t always reflect her reading preferences, but mostly it does. She writes what she wants to read and reads extensively because she’s an addict. To books, obviously. And caffeine because sleep is for other people.
So I’ve been on a binge read of Jennifer Cody’s books, and this one had the same fascinating characters and fast-paced action but with a whole lotta kink that I thought was done really well, even if not all of it was to my personal taste lol. The main characters met each other’s needs so well and clearly communicated their wants and feelings. They were just perfect for each other!
But darn it all, for every question answered I feel like I end up with two more (that epilogue omg). This is definitely not a series I’d get bored of in the middle. I’ll read what’s available and then anxiously wait for more!
Oh my word... this is a first for me experiencing the extreme or what I seem to think is the extreme end of a Dom and his Sub. It was quite 🥵🌶 and everything in-between. Monet was a surprise as well as Qis. The dynamics between these two... I don't even know how to begin to describe it. I can not believe the last 90% of the book. Especially that last chapter 😳. CRAZY 🤪 😜 I'm dying to know how this all works out.
The relationship between Money and Qis while hot, uses fated mates to paper over the cracks. No contract, no safewords, just some perfect Dom meeting his perfect sub and boom, lets get on with pulling out our western mythology minor and showing all the gods off.
Also Fate is a thing, and it’s horrible how it’s both fixed and changeable, if you have the right shills. We’re all puppets dancing on the strings of fate, with no agency because some entity knows how to manipulate predestination. A powerful celestial guardian finds multiple instances where he’s powerless. Wonder if that’s his greatest fear as a Dom.
Interesting things: Qis sold himself into slavery, charmed by his absentee father, which seems like BS victim blaming; what of the millions of others who are forced into servitude without promises?
Violent people don’t turn off violence when they get home.
I wonder how many people are trapped in D/s relationships without a safe word, because petty tyrants can’t respect boundaries, and society supports that.
A running joke in the previous book is that Qis is everyone’s favorite, and after reading his story, I have to agree. Alone, he and Monet are fascinating heroes. Together, they’re a perfect combination on all accounts, and everything about how they come together is sexy AF. (Of course, your mileage may vary – heed the warnings regarding aspects of their relationship.) One of my favorite things about this urban fantasy series is the solid world-building Cody has done to continually reinvent the “fated mates” trope to make it applicable to the unique characters and situations in each book.
Cody is also excellent at changing all the rules of her world once we think we know them. What I assumed to be a fluke at the end of the first book in this trilogy is a bigger deal than I previously thought. Cody also plays with the concept of fate itself in this circular storytelling method of repeating time in a way that features plenty of surprises, no matter that we think we already know what happens next. Despite knowing how the final conflict at the end of this story plays out, she raises the stakes once again. The gods still play a large part in this narrative, but the true “big bad” might be on another level entirely.
Because of the aforementioned fated mates bit, Qis and Monet end this book in a good place for their relationship. Until Cody shocked me entirely with one of the ways she changes the rules on us. This book does end on a cliffhanger, with an epic ending that provides more questions than answers. Even though I wasn’t originally looking forward to the relationship featured in the next book, I launched into the next story as soon as possible.
Jennifer Cody does it again with Capture! I could not put this book down, and when I had to it was begrudgingly. If you haven't read any of Jennifer Cody's books, you need to, even if this is not typically a genre you would be drawn to. The world that she creates and the depth and care is evident in Every. Single. Facet. of her books.
Qis and Monet were something else. The dynamic of their relationship works and it's beautiful getting to see how their connection builds and grows. The values and heart within each of the men is captivating and it was part of the reason that Capture was so hard to put down.
I can't wait to see what is in store with in the next installment of the series. I adore this world and these characters and they are definitely books to keep visiting again and again.
While the kink in this book might not do anything for me the whole story and all the characters in it are amazing. It's a trilogy as the last one and the couples from the previous books are part of the plot and all three parts are going on at the same time but from different perspectives. It's the good against evil and the war is unavoidable at this point. The MCs in this book are Monet who's a Seraph and Qis who's an Ouroboros and Tios and Deejays brother and the bad guy is their father Set who's a God.
I really enjoy the mix of suspense and the fighting and the couples and their relationships and even if the D/s relationship isn't my thing I love that Quis find someone to care for him the way he needs.
This series sucked me in from the first novel. The world building is amazing, the stories are intricate with twists and turns that have kept me reading way past my bedtime. Capture is Qis and Monet’s story. The god Set is bringing war to Houston, and Monet is unexpectedly put in charge of keeping Earth safe. The Fates have bound Qis and Monet together as mates, and anyone who thinks they are someone (gods, angels, the void) are shuffling the chess board in an attempt to influence the outcome of the war.
Argh! why did I have to read this before the series was already complete?!
I’m going to trust the author that this will make sense with Ryan and Kim’s book. I have no real clue what just happened, or what is going to happen. Is every inhabitant of both the Firmament and Elysium gone? Are they all in the Void? Have they been captured, or are they permanently gone? What/who is the Nothing Man and are the results of his actions desirable or not?is the fate of D’Aquino to be more than it had ever imagined it could be?
I just can't help but wonder what can possibly happen next. I find myself so fascinated by how these series fit together. Instead of the next chronological part of the story , you get the next pulled back layer. What was happening while the previous story was running around? And oh yes, lots of smexy.
I'm a little shell-shocked right now. I know I need to read the next two books, and I DO trust that everything is going to work out, but...holy CRAP, that didn't end how I expected. I'll probably be reading the next book within the week, if I can find the stamina. Uffda. In the meantime, off to find something fluffy distract me a bit.
Oh, this one was good! It got dark, with a full-on sadist/masochist and Dom/Sub bdsm full-time relationship. Just like the Diviner's Game series, this second book shows nearly the same timeline as book one from another perspective. The twists don't stop and the heat is intense. I'm looking forward to book 3; will definitely pre-order!
My heart and head are beating so fast right I can hardly take in everything I have just read. Jennifer says it will all work out. I hope that is true cause right now I have no idea how it will. I highly recommend this book and series even if it gives me palpitations.
Another great book in this series! I feel like I'm on a crazy ride and can't wait to see how it ends. So worth the price of the ticket! You should definitely read this book but start at the beginning of the series.
This book was incredible so many twist and turns I still really don't know what the hell just happened but I am putting my faith in this author that it is all going to come together.. Off to book 3
I couldn't put the book down. The story just kept getting wilder and wilder. I enjoyed getting to know the MCs better but I hope some supporting characters get their own story, such as Anni.
This book was absolutely amazing as usual of Jennifer Cody's work. The amazing gift she has to Weave a story, suck you into this new universe, and leave you wanting more of it. I also absolutely love how she compose her series.
This series is amazing. Definitely worth reading there is one chapter toward the end mislabeled as Qi’s when it’s definitely Monet pov but I love this whole series!
I can't get enough of these series I really can't. As each book is read Questions are answered and asked. Characters become fuller and more are added. Love it. Would recommend.
First some positives...how do authours come up with stuff like this? The paranormal world Jennifer Cody's books are set it is so cool!
I'm so impressed at the originality and detail in the world-building of a debut series. The writing isn't perfect, maybe a bit clunky and some plot points seem to go too fast, but you can see improvement as the series progresses, and it's not enough to pull you out of the story, and there are some amazing lines in there that I loved, from beautiful to hilarious. "So black they trick the eye into disbelieving in their existence." and "Until I wanted to behead my uncle. That's a problem."
I read a ton of urban fantasy, but the setup of the Houston Hub and all it's non-human residents is unique. I love all the different creatures/races as well as getting to know the diversely quirky personalities of her characters. This book is about Qis (his twin Tio is one of my absolute favourites) and Monet. They're not my favourite couple so far, but I still really liked their romance. I'm a sucker for insecure boys falling in love and finding their happy. Qis knew what would happen if he saved Tigre, but he did it anyway! *crying face*
Some things that I loved: the way Monet talks about Kim's monotone, acknowledging that he has depth of emotion even if he can't express it made me feel so heard, Qis' sweetness and love for his family, his journey to loving himself again and the way Monet helps him.
Some things I had a problem with: some of the BDSM stuff between Monet and Qis felt like it happened too fast, and there where other bits that just felt kind of disrespectful of Qis' trauma. Not going to go into any more detail because spoilers!
I love the plot (so many twists) and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book. What's up with the crazy Nothing man? Why hasn't Den told anyone about him? Where are the gods powers going to go? Where is everyone, and is the war over? What happened when they went through the portal? I want so badly to read about Ani and Charon's love story!
I am loving this series just as much as The Diviner's Game series which is set in the same universe with many of the same characters. Capture, the second book in the Shattered Pawns series was brilliant, I really don't know how Jennifer Cody manages to come up with the storylines, theme and plot, so amazingly twisted and intricately orchestrated, each story though happening at the same time frame, building on to the previous one, giving us more information without rehashing everything that happened with the other characters.
I adored Qis and Monet, these two were definitely made for each other and though I don't understand the whole pain/pleasure/comfort kink, I know there's a kink out there for everyone, and Monet was made for showing Qis what it was he needed. There are some very hot and interesting and kinky sex scenes that had me wondering whether they were actually possible, I'm assured they definitely are and I have a fabulous imagination so I didn't need to check it out for myself.
I love the whole Aquino family and enjoy my time with them every novel. You do need to have read Pass (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...) before reading Capture for maximum enjoyment as they each build on to the story. There are gods, fighting, intrigue and danger for everyone and these guys are going to learn who they really are and what they are capable of when it all hits the fan.
I can't wait for book 3 when we find out how it all ends and we get to see how Kim and Ryan get together.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC in return for an honest review.
I have to say, this book exceeded all my expectations in every way. Jennifer really outdid herself with this one. It’s a big longer than her books typically run, but the content is just spectacular. I really don’t know how she keeps track of the overarching plot, and all its details, in multiple books from different perspectives, and keeps track of little elements and even connects those in the other books. Needless to say, this book continues the very complex and chaotic plot from book one, from the angle of Monet, the Seraph, and Qis, the Ouroboros.
But but BUT… this book is so much more than an extension of the plot reveals. The Monet/Qis relationship is sexy, steamy, kinky, and so intimate and romantic, you can easily ignore everything else going on and just let those two entertain you through the entire book. If you liked the Gage/Loki dynamic in the first series, this one blows them away. Monet is a possessive, controlling, absolutely loving sadist dominant that connects perfectly, in every way, with the “atypical” way Qis processes pain and dominance. Exploring these two guys is beautiful and hot.
Back to the overarching story. This book reveals a LOT, and we see the war of the gods on page. But, we definitely don’t know everything. There’s a big character reveal, a twist no one saw coming, and we still need to know WHY it’s all happening.
One more time, this book was phenomenal and was, easily, Jennifer’s best book so far. The detail, the relationship, the complexity, the continued world building are out of this world.
Capture is the 2nd installment of the Captured Pawns series and is the story of Qis and Monet, but so much more that it is hard to give a brief summary of the story and events without giving too much away or writing a extremely long review. WARNING: this story has MANY triggers and subjects that some people will find disturbing - this is NOT a story for the faint of heart. Also, the story is complicated and the plot intricate and involves events and characters from the first installment Pass and the The Diviners series - I have read all those books, and I found that I had go over the passages more than once and refer back to The Diviners series. The story at times gets bogged downs by all the details and while more light is shed on the events, more questions pop up. At the heart of the story is the relationship between Qis and Monet. Theirs is a complicated and INTENSE relationship and Qis' past trauma is EXCRUITATING. But characters overcoming their painful pasts and traumas are what, in my opinion, the author, Jennifer Cody does best. There are no easy solutions or "fixes" for Qis, just learning to live with what has happened and to accept who he is. and if you thought Gage's feelings and actions towards Loki were intense - Monet's towards Qis is EVEN MORE SO. The author's re-occurring theme of broken is beautiful and strong is evident in this book. Very well written and thought out plot and "real" characters make for a very satisfying, intense read - will have "book hangover" with this one for quite some time.
This is definitely my favorite so far. I have to admit that I was a little apprehensive about Qis and Monet - their dynamic seemed a little cold to me in the first book when we got a quick glimpse of them. But they are definitely HOT - like on-fire-smoking hot. Not only that, but the love is palpable between them. There’s definitely strong D/s elements here, but there’s nothing too crazy if that isn’t your thing, and the love and devotion are equally as strong between the characters. Qis is a wounded soul and Monet helps him heal and embrace who he is. I love it when you see not only the development of a relationship, but also the growth of a character, and we have that here.
The plot is, as always, action-packed. I think there’s more non-stop action here than in book one, and I couldn’t stop reading to see what was going to happen next. We have a definite HEA for our main characters, but with another book on the way there’s obviously some loose ends for other characters. There is an author’s note at the end where we are asked to trust our author, and I’m confident everyone good will get their HEA by the end of the series.
This is NOT a standalone, and the series is definitely worth the read. It has unresolved conflicts, but it is not a cliffhanger, and our author has these books come out pretty close together, so I don’t think we’ll be waiting too long to find out about other characters. This one gave me a total book hangover, and I highly recommend it.
Ok..... I'm officially broken! I had to take time to process everything before I could write this review.
This book was amazing! I loved everything about it! There is so much going on I'm not sure where to begin. But, I'll try.
The world building is mind blowing. It's truly amazing how each book builds on the others, including previous series. I sometimes worry I will get lost in the chaos, but I never do. It is all stitched together seamlessly to make it easy for the reader to follow along.
The romance, heat, and various kinks are so well done. Monet and Qis are everything together. Watching their relationship unfold made me feel ALL the feelings!
But..... It's not only the main characters relationships that are special. The cast of supporting characters are just as intriguing. The love, acceptance, and sense of family woven throughout is magical. I want to know every single characters story!
So many questions were answered from the last book. Yet so many more questions have arisen. I honestly have a bit of a book hangover..... Especially knowing I have to wait for the next one!
Qis is an Ouroboros. He's comfortable in his shifted snake until he meets Monet. Monet slowly gets Qis to trust him and then Qis shifts to his human body. Qis has been tortured and forced to enjoy it. Monet enjoys hurting people for their sexual pleasure. It's a match made in Heaven. When Qis in his human form meets Monet, the mate bond does something to Monet and he goes to the HUB to get species tested. Everyone in the know is surprised by the results. Soon Qis and Monet are doing their part for the war with the Gods.
This book has too many different fetishes IMO. It was like Qis and Monet have their thing, so others around them are showing their kinks as well. So that plus the over abundance of sex was a distraction from the storyline. I had trouble following along and became bored in a couple spots, which led to skimming pages. I liked the overall story arch and the parts that paralleled book one but yeah too much fetish/kinks. Looking forward to book three, as well as Anni and Charon's story and Denver's story. If you like lots of kinks, this is the story for you.
Whatever you do, DO NOT try and read this without at the very least having read Pass. Honestly, you need to read the Diviner's Series first to really get the most of it. The author's mind is a wonderful, mysterious nebula of Gods and Goddesses of more pantheons than I knew existed. Her world building is genuinely some of the best I have ever read, and I've been reading Sci-fi and fantasy for more than 30 years, so that's saying a lot. Much of the timeline coincides with Pass, and it is interesting to know what's happening in the background of this particular story. While I had a bit of a tough time keeping track of the characters, and who they are actually and also familiarly related to, the author manages to keep it all straight, and it does flow well. Definitely not a story to read when you're in a fluffy, no angst sort of mood. There are some darker themes, but they make the relationship between Monet and Qis so...authentic. Looking forward to Kim and Ryan's story even more now. Another amazing job by Ms Cody.
