As the Magnum Group unravels a mystery regarding the purpose of Russian spies that secretly entered the U.S., Brady Hawk finds himself in the den of one of the most ruthless Russian military leaders during the Cold War. As his role in the infiltration of spies into the U.S. becomes clear, the Russian General makes a bold move that sets off a dangerous chain of events, threatening the safety of the U.S. military and the entire city of Washington.
In a race against the clock, Hawk and Alex work with the rest of the Magnum team to hunt down the Russian spies before it’s too late … both for them and the country’s fragile intelligence community.

THE FIRST SIGNS that I might like writing -- and that I might be slightly competitive -- appeared when my year two (or first grade) teacher, Mrs. Holland, asked my class to write and illustrate our day. Mine read like this: “The Red team beat the Blue team, 1 to nil. And I won.” The next 47 entries covered my exploits on the soccer pitch while growing up in Ipswich, England.
In South Carolina as a teenager, my dad told me that I could get paid to watch sports provided I could write about it. Sounded easy enough and by the time I was 16, I landed a job at my town’s daily newspaper and had a column on Major League Baseball players from our area. I also covered my first riot there at a sporting event -- and it’s safe to say I was smitten with journalism.
After graduating from one of the best journalism schools in the country, I took a job as a sports editor in South Georgia and learned firsthand about the passion of high school sports in rural America. I thought I knew before, but I didn’t. This was another world.
I also had the opportunity to cover major sporting events like the Olympic Games, the World Series, the Super Bowl, and the Final Four. It was a thrill!
But nothing was as thrilling to me as uncovering the truth in investigative assignments. I once broke a story about a prominent southern football team’s NCAA violation -- and found out the violating coach had committed suicide only a few months earlier. The story won a national writing award and stoked my desire to write about these issues. It made me realize that the sports world was just another fantastic backdrop for drama.
After writing non-fiction books with athletes, for athletes, and ghost writing for many others, I decided to enter the world of fiction writing. It had been something I wanted to do but never found the time. So, I made the time--and had a blast in the process.
I’m not out to become the next Faulkner or Hemingway -- I’m just out to tell a good story. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them!
There is so much going on in this story! Hawk, with the help of Alex, is trying to extract a prisoner from a Russian prison who has information about an impending operation. As usual he gets in lots of trouble. Morgan May, who is now head of the Magnum Group, is working to find a mole in their organization. President Norris has discovered some hacked videos on the White House servers that the President is very worried about. Robert (Bobby) Besserman’s job as CIA Director could be in jeopardy. Meanwhile, there is a sleeper cell operating all over the U.S.causing explosions on trains and buses and there is a major threat to the Pentagon. This was such a great story! I could not put it down. I think this is one of the best books I have read. And there is more to come. Read and enjoy!
Brady and Alex are on the hunt again as Magnum Group hunts down a list of spies. Once again R.J. Patterson starts the story off with a bang and keeps the action at a high level throughout the story. As is the case with the previous Phoenix Chronicles there are multiple story lines going on throughout the story which tie the current story to the previous. In Covert Invasion, a question is answered regarding the underlying story line, but once answered it opens up a potential for future problems in Magnum Group operations. This series keeps getting better with each new book, hopefully #4 is right around the corner. I received an advance Reader Copy and chose to provide this review.
An extraction of a man, now a shell of what he was Pleading to leave him outside, sunlight after three years Blunt’s niece Morgan, surprising him, he’s spending days fishing Telling her fishing is no different then catching a mole. Informing enemies of their plans, jeopardizing lives. Then using blackmail, wanting to expose person as a fraud. Great op mission with Hawk and Alex The loving comments between them to keep their perspective A thriller to the end, will the agency figure it out. Great series Given Arc For my voluntary review and my honest opinion
Sometimes its very difficult to put into words how mesmerizing a book is to read. This is one of those times. From the first chapter till the last, Patterson keeps the reader entranced with the plot and the fast moving action pulls you into the story itself. If you don't read this book, you will be missing g out of one of the best rides you've ever been taken on.
Brady Hawk and his wife Alex are trying to stop a a covert group called Alliance. Their tentacles are entrenched in government and prominent members of society. A sleeper cell for Russian terrorist have started their bombing attacks in America and the clock is ticking. As usual non stop action, intrigue and suspense on every page. Another excellent read in this series!! Enjoyed immensely!!
Another excellent Brady Hawk story. Numerous things start happening and the whole team starts investigating what is going on. As things start to unfold the team has to develop plans to resolve the situations even when the President impedes their progress. I can't wait for the next book, ill be one of the first to read it.
Let’s just say that I won’t venture any further. The plot is sophomoric, and forced. The dialogue is stilted and a wierd imitation of life. The characters never became familiar and believable. I only got through about half of the third or fourth chapter and gave up. Sorry, maybe it’s just me.
The Alliance is eliminating their own moles. An ex Russian General and his university student granddaughter are bent on revenge for the murder of a family member. They are three steps ahead of our heroes with time running out for the safety of the American public. A side problem, why is President Norris in a video with a Chinese general?
Another Brady Hawk thriller with a well written plot and excellent realistic characters. Contains plenty of non stop action and suspense. A very enjoyable spy thriller that I highly recommend. The Phoenix Chronicle Series just keeps getting better.
If you’re a fan of Brady Hawk you’ll enjoy this one, and if you haven’t discovered him yet this one just might get you hooked. He and Alex make a great team, and the Russians don’t stand a chance.
Once again Brady is on the job to keep us intrigued. Russians amongst us and with it , plenty of danger. How will Brady solve this one. This is a series not to be missed.
Patterson struggles with his characters or I’m not paying attention. How does Dr Z go from a young energetic technology nurd to an old neared man after 2 novels?
Read all three looking forward to next one. An enjoyable read that moves quickly with current themes a great balance of characters, location, technology
Hawk, Alex, and the Magnum Group are again fighting the enemy to keep America safe. I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the rest of the Phoenix Chronicles.
