You like action? It’s here. Sport performances? Yes, here. Love story? Here too. And more: character transformation. Lead character, Astra, has entered an arena that “tests not your strength or speed, but yourself.” The surprising thing for me was that I felt myself get stronger and braver along with Astra.

From beginning to end, Headspace is a high-stakes sci-fi thriller with a thoughtful commentary on personal humanity, entertainment, and media-driven narrative while being immensely entertaining in its own right.
The characters not only have depth, but pockets of their personalities surface when circumstances manage to dig them up. The author drives character development through these earned moments, and no character ever develops simply for being "along for the ride". The character development shines brightest in their relationships to each other. The bonds formed make up some of the most rewarding passages, as well as some of the best illustrations on the theme of personal humanity.
The story is exceptionally well planned, from every rise and fall to every reveal. I was especially stunned by the weight of the final climax, which took an unexpected form that is both thought provoking and emotionally rewarding. And the denouement plots a promising course that there is more to come of everything that makes this book great.
I was privileged to be an ARC reader of this book. To my delight, I have a front row seat to the rising of this author, and as such I wish for them all the success in the world.

This book is like the Hunger Games, but less dystopian and more sinister. When a mysterious alien sphere, humans must fight or die in a virtual tournament to save their planet. The twist is, physical ability doesn't matter, it's what you can do in your head that gives you strength to pass through the rounds. A very interesting perspective on assumptions of ability and disability, who gets to be a hero, and how society makes assumptions about what a hero should be.

“The name of the game is Headspace, and the purpose of the game is fun. This is going to be the most fun you ever have.”
I was lucky enough to receive this book as an ARC. Headspace is the kind of page turner that makes you really, truly remember that you LOVE reading. Pre-pandemic, I veered so far into educational non-fiction and Literature-with-a-capital-L that I forgot what it's like to have pure, unadulterated fun with a book. Headspace gave that back to me in spades. For a book full of death, it sure made me feel alive.
The strong writing reads easily, like a YA novel, but the characters are relatable adults with adult perspectives and concerns. The main character, Astra, is spunky, a little chaotic, and copes with the arena in realistic ways; the rest of the very diverse cast is equally compelling and memorable, making this more of an ensemble effort than you might expect. The plot turned me into a bit of a conspiracy theorist as I kept trying to guess how things would shake out--I've rarely been so excited to be wrong so many times. Even my mom, who has trouble focusing on books, couldn't put this wild ride down. If you like Hunger Games, Battle Royale, soft sci-fi, CW shows, or really *anything* that is extremely fandom-able, this book should go on your summer reading list immediately!

Review: Headspace by J. D. Edwin
Headspace by J. D. Edwin is an intense, science-fiction thriller that pulls no punches. Her characters manage to be both flawed and lovable, making even the aliens deeply human. It took me a little while to get into this book, but once I was there I couldn’t put it down. I literally read the last half in one day. I was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for this book and hope I get the opportunity to pre-read Edwin's work again in the future.
Astra is a humble nobody with few family ties and lots of early-twenties angst. She’s more at home in her little library of books than talking with her awkward father. Then the great “orb” arrives and turns the world on its head, offering fame and fortune through unknown means simply by signing up through their website. Astra has no interest but her pregnant best friend, Hannah, who isn’t eligible because of her gravid state, enters her anyway. When the reality of the “Headspace” game is revealed as a deadly maze that’s more abattoir than game show, there’s global panic. The mysterious aliens promise that if no one survives the games, the world will be destroyed. When Astra is pulled into the games and becomes one of the first survivors, her whole life is turned upside down. Now instead of worrying about the end of the world, she’s responsible for helping prevent it with a small but soon close-knit group of contestants. Weaving in themes of loyalty and betrayal, racism, ableism, and celebrity, J. D. Edwin makes this fantastical scenario into a visceral and emotional rollercoaster.
The plot of “Headspace” feels like a combination of Battle Royal and the Hunger Games. With the emotionally detached Cheshire as glorified ringmaster of the games and the complicated politics of celebrity worship, I think both Harry Potter and Katniss Everdeen would feel at home in this fictional universe.
The ‘end of the world’ vibe was so accurate to the experiences of 2020’s COVID epidemic, I actually struggled to get into the story for the first few chapters because it kept triggering that emotional state. Once Astra was into the games, however, I was quickly swept up in the interpersonal conflicts and complexities of her fellow contestants. Once he finally becomes a person instead of an automaton, Eleven quickly steals the show as my favorite character. His humble yet ancient personality hit all the right notes for me.
The only complaint I had was how abruptly some of the romantic subplot came to a head. The scene where Eleven and Astra have their yelling match just didn’t read as convincingly as the rest of the dialogue.
Overall, I really enjoyed this read. J. D. Edwin came up with creative and chilling scenarios for the game rounds and I connected with all of her main characters. The highlight of the book for me was the “bonus round” which was brilliantly existential and reminded me of classic Twilight Zone. I definitely look forward to the next book by this author!

I was lucky to be chosen as an ARC reader for Headspace and I learned something pretty quick. Headspace is one of those books you just cant put down. It may have a bit of a slow start for some readers but the story itself has a slow start for the characters in the book. However, once the action starts it never slows down. This was one of the most gripping, edge of your seat, intense books I have read in a long time. Headspace has quickly moved to one of my favorite books that I have ever read. JD Edwin has the ability to hold an audience with mere words. An ability I have seen in other authors such as; R. A. Salvatore, Terry Goodkind, Rick Riordan, Terry Pratchett, and Sarah J. Maas to name a few.
The characters in this book are diverse and unique while being engaging and captivating. Astra is just your everyday person trying to survive the chaos thrust her way and it shows. She goes through all the same emotions and struggles and pains that we would if we were in her shoes. To put it bluntly, she is human. Real and pure and simple and complex and human. The other characters in Headspace are all just as human and just as diverse. They all handle the situation slightly different, some wildly different, and it shows just how different people can be.
If you want to read a book that drags you through the nitty gritty chaos of life in the spotlight while trying to survive unspeakable things, and maybe a side of romance, then Headspace is your next read. It has everything you could want from a book and more. It isn't terribly long but isn't short either. That being said I did finish it in under 2 days, but like I said, I literally couldn't put it down. Enjoy and Happy Reading.

This book was everything I didn’t know I was looking for to immerse myself in a different reality. I absolutely enjoyed every page. The well-defined characters draw you in to their thought process and strategies but still somehow manage to keep a good deal of intention a secret. Very clever!
The author describes each set in such a way that I found myself in the orb alongside the contestants. I was immersed. To say I was obsessed with this book is an understatement. I found myself wishing for more time in the day to devote to each page.
Life and death, love and loss, complicated relationships, terrifying and thrilling action, heroes and villains. This story has it all!

Wow.
Thank you, J.D. Edwin, for the ARC and the opportunity to immerse myself in this new (chilling but mesmerizing?) world.
Such a great read! Once the action starts, it never stops. I couldn't put the book down once I reached the middle.
My emotions were all over the place; I was thrilled to be in the arena with the characters. I finished it a few days ago, and I am still thinking about it and what I would have done if...
Last point: I just love the author's work with the character Eleven: a fantastic job!
Now, I just have to wait and hope the second book won't take too long... ?

I was privileged to get to be an ARC reader for Headspace, and when my husband asked me if what I was reading was more interesting than him, I'm not saying I answered in the affirmative, but I'm not saying I denied it either.
With its Cowboy Bebop, building sense of dread and a pinch of sadistic Willy Wonka vibes, Headspace draws you in immediately, sinks its teeth into your arm and won't let go. Well-paced, well-written and with unexpected twists along the way, this is a book I will always recommend to fans of Sci-fi.

I'm grateful I was offered to the opportunity to read an ARC copy of this book, as a heads up I'd like to just let people know that this isn't normally my type of book, but I'm always happy to try new things
This book cuts through all the fluff and fits as much story as possible into the pages of this book, immediately putting you into the fast lane. The character development and transformation, the engaging personalities written in such a realistic way, the action and entertainment that accompanies this wonderful concept.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fictional story, I hope to read more from this talented author in the future.

Okay, normally I’m more of a YA Fantasy reader, but when I had the opportunity to receive Headspace (full of mysterious Aliens, a battle royale to the death, etc.) as an ARC I jumped at the chance. Best decision I have made regarding books this year! We all know this past year has been a struggle for everyone. Reading took a backseat for a while, or nothing seemed to capture my attention long enough to be finished, and for a Librarian- that’s torture. Headspace has become my new favorite and a great reminder of why I love to read.
This sci-fi thriller kept me glued to the page for hours. It’s non-stop action, relatable characters, and a splash of love was the perfect blend to keep any reader entertained. J.D. Edwin knows how to weave an engaging and thought-provoking story.
To break down our story just a little bit, it starts with a mysterious orb appearing. There are no entrances, no windows, no nothing. Just a plain old orb. The world is baffled. Next comes the mysterious videos asking the all-important question of “Are you ready for the spotlight to shine on you?” From there the mystery only thickens, for now you can enter your name for a chance at said fame. Would you have dared entered your name to become famous without knowing what was in store? Personally, I would not. The same goes for our main character, Astra! She wanted no part, but due to circumstances she had no control over, she is still thrown headfirst into this brutal arena of blood, bone, sinew, and death. (I am leaving out so much, I don’t want to risk spoiling anything- You have to read this book!)
I related so much to our main character and fellow bookworm/ homebody, Astra, so much. I could see myself in her shoes. Astra is a normal yet spunky, independent woman who reacts so realistically to everything that is happening to her. She’s a real human who just wants to not only survive, but also must save Earth from entertainment deprived Aliens! That’s a lot for a person to take on. Joining Astra on her journey, and meeting the other characters, seeing & experiencing what they do with only words is a magic only J.D. Edwin (and a select few other writers) has.
This book is so real and raw. You’re thrown into a world (much like our characters) where anything is fair game. Gritty violence, with brilliant problem solving, character development and a mystery you can’t wait to uncover makes for sitting on the edge of your chair an Olympic sport! It’s a decent length for what the book is. If you are a fan of Hunger Games, but want a more adult approach, here is your new favorite book.
Now I just bide my time and wait for the next book in the series to be written. But in the meantime, I will be re-reading this incredible book until I have it memorized! Pick up a copy ASAP and be prepared for a wild & intense ride.

First of all, I will be up-front with readers. Headspace usually isn't the kind of book I read, but I was given an opportunity to be an advance reader, so I decided to expand my literary horizons.
This is a fast-paced, well-written fantasy novel that's a unique version of something similar to the reality television show, American Ninja Warrior with a dark, futuristic alien twist. Astra Ching, the protagonist, is smart, resilient, and believable as she overcomes almost insurmountable odds in an attempt to win a contest where her only weapon is her intellect and the winning prize is survival, not just her own, but that of the entire world. The other characters are also relatable, and all too human - even the aliens, which was confusing for me at first since I read largely non-fiction, but in the end, it all came together very well. Fantasy genre at its best.
Don't miss this one. J.D. Edwin is an imaginative writer who kept me engaged throughout the entire story. If you're a fan of this genre, or even if you're not, you need to read this one. You will not be disappointed!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I first signed up to be an ARC reader of Headspace, but this book sucked me in on the very first line and never let me go!
Astra is a young woman who prefers reading to people and doesn't like to take risks. She's an unlikely (and unwilling) contestant in an alien game show taking the world and media by storm. Now, she's fighting for her life with the odds stacked against her - surrounded by people whose motives might not be as straightforward as they seem.
There are SO many elements in this story that make it feel frighteningly realistic: the social media hype, the fickle infatuation of the masses for their latest celebrities, and the motives and involvement of the government.
The fear and uncertainty are so tangible that they will keep you hanging on to the very end! I felt so involved and emotionally invested with these characters that I sat down after finishing this book and took several deep breaths to try processing What. On. Earth. had just happened.
J. D. Edwin is a phenomenal writer. I believed that in the first chapter, and I finished the last one absolutely sure of it. I used to be a voracious reader but fell out of the habit with the busyness of life post-graduation. As I've started to get back into reading, I've realized that there are some books, some writing styles, that have that extra something. It's hard to put my finger on it to describe it, but these books flow so smoothly - so thoroughly draw you in - that you won't realize you're reading words on paper anymore. Instead, they play before your mind's eye like a movie tailor-made for you.
Headspace is one of those books. It makes reading effortless, and I read the last 23 chapters in one night.
Was there anything I didn't like?
There are so many great things to love about this book that it makes me pause before mentioning anything I didn't like. But, there were a few things that I found a bit off-putting. Number 1 would be a romantic element in this book that I wasn't expecting. And no, this doesn't mean that I didn't appreciate this couple. They are cute, and I love them. It just moved really fast, and there's an "almost" scene that I didn't appreciate (but I also went into this book with zero romantic expectations, so that's on me).
Number 2 would be the language. There's more swearing than I appreciate, with terms like f*ck, d*ck, and wh*re being used frequently in the last two-thirds of this book. I tend to avoid books with this much (though it isn't inundated with them - so it's not as bad as I'm probably making this sound), but I kept reading, and in the end, I still loved this book.
I will still buy myself both a paperback and an audio copy once it's available on July 13th. Why? Because the swearing still made sense. It didn't detract enough from this book to make me not want to reread it or get my hands on the sequel as soon as possible - because I will. Most. Definitely. Be reading this again (and I need that sequel! 😅).

J. D. Edwin is a phenomenal writer. I believed that in the first chapter, and I finished the last one absolutely sure of it. I used to be a voracious reader but fell out of the habit with the busyness of life post-graduation. As I've started to get back into reading, I've realized that there are some books, some writing styles, that have that extra something. It's hard to put my finger on it to describe it, but these books flow so smoothly - so thoroughly draw you in - that you won't realize you're reading words on paper anymore. Instead, they play before your mind's eye like a movie tailor-made for you.
Headspace is one of those books. It makes reading effortless, and I read the last 23 chapters in one night.
Was there anything I didn't like?
There are so many great things to love about this book that it makes me pause before mentioning anything I didn't like. But, there were a few things that I found a bit off-putting. Number 1 would be a romantic element in this book that I wasn't expecting. And no, this doesn't mean that I didn't appreciate this couple. They are cute, and I love them. It just moved really fast, and there's an "almost" scene that I didn't appreciate (but I also went into this book with zero romantic expectations, so that's on me).
Number 2 would be the language. There's more swearing than I appreciate, with terms like f*ck, d*ck, and wh*re being used frequently in the last two-thirds of this book. I tend to avoid books with this much (though it isn't inundated with them - so it's not as bad as I'm probably making this sound), but I kept reading, and in the end, I still loved this book.
I will still buy myself both a paperback and an audio copy once it's available on July 13th. Why? Because the swearing still made sense. It didn't detract enough from this book to make me not want to reread it or get my hands on the sequel as soon as possible - because I will. Most. Definitely. Be reading this again (and I need that sequel! 😅).

I've been on the audiobook train for the past couple years, and I was admittedly uncertain on whether I'd be able to commit to sitting down and actually reading a book. I was offered an opportunity to be an ARC reader for Headspace and took it as a personal challenge for myself, diving right in. Headspace made it easy for me to stay engaged right from the start. There's something very alluring about this story; the author writes in such a way that kept me turning pages, eager to find out what happened next.
Another ARC reader had completed Headspace before me, and it was a riot messaging her with my revelations as I got deeper into the story ("He did WHAT?" with their response usually resembling, "I KNOW, right?!" and "No spoilers!"). I even mentioned the core concept to my fiancé when I first started reading, and he was badgering me the next day to find out what happened next (sorry, love, you'll need to read it for yourself!). Astra is a relatable, believable character, and I really found myself rooting for her.
The clever, biting wit found in Headspace kept me coming back over and over in the three or four days it took me to devour it. I also found myself creating internal alliances with certain characters, while simultaneously mistrusting others, and then being delighted when the book turned everything I had previously thought onto its head. Give it a read, I promise you won't be disappointed. I really enjoyed it and I hope to read more from this very talented author in the future.

For the past few years, I've been on the audiobook train mostly for time management reasons. When I was asked to be an ARC reader I was hesitant about committing the time to sit and read. No worries! I finished Headspace in two days! I will say that I enjoy sci-fi books and movies so this was right up my alley. Headspace kept my attention from the beginning and I really enjoyed the plot. Overall I got the vibes of an alien Hunger Games mixed with an epic gameshow.
As the parent of a disabled child, I appreciated the way that characters with disabilities were included throughout the book in a way that was respectful and second nature to their personality and purpose. There was one instance of the "R" word being used that I could have lived without, but overall there wasn't a pity party or instance of disability porn to be seen. I felt that the author's ability to connect to these characters was deliberate and well done.
Headspace is a quick fun read that will keep you up way too late at night!

I was fortunate to be picked to be an ARC reader for Headspace. I love to read all books, but sci-fi and fantasy are my favorite genres. J.D. Edwin is an author to follow! She has such a strong and beautiful voice that many readers can connect to.
The beginning was slow, but the details are necessary. However, it was far from boring. Astra was an entertaining and relatable character (that's a big decision on if I continue a book or not). You could feel the anticipation building through the descriptions and word choices. They helped set up the rest of the book beautifully to create a vivid picture.
I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to read a sci-fi book with thriller elements or a looking for that good summer read. J.D. Edwin, you have a new fan! Please write more books!

You ever stay up reading a book until 3am on a Monday when you've got to be up by 8 for a meeting? This is that kind of book. Every chapter is tantalising, seeming to offer you a reprieve, a place you can put it down and breathe - then it sucks you back into the action and the uncertainty. If you want a story about a struggle against insurmountable odds, about love in a time of adversity, or just some hardcore splatter and gore action, here's one for you. It's a breezy, comfy read that you can get through in a few afternoons, but with an ending that'll leave you speculating for more of what's to come.

This story sucked me right in. I can tell it was well edited, it was an easy writing style to read. I also enjoyed that unlike so many dystopian science fiction stories this one had such a hopeful tone.
From the beginning, the premise sounds pretty wild, What with an alien orb coming down to test humanity. But the author does well with character reactions and motivations. Makes it seem relatable and believable to the point I just accepted things and enjoyed the story.
Not my typical type of sci-fi but glad I read this. It was a fun ride all the way through.

I was an ARC reader for Headspace, and I must say, I've never really read Science Fiction, since I haven't really had any interest for that type of genre. But Headspace is different. It has the Sci-Fi vibes, while containing action and almost fantasy-like parts. The overall plot is awesome, and the action sections are really well written to give you chills. The mystery is also stunning. The characters are well defined, and I really enjoyed this book.
If you like some action and adventurous science fiction books, then this is the book for you.

This book left me with a book hangover from staying up far too late reading! When it ended I was left bereft because it was just SO good that I wanted more, but I was also satisfied because it wrapped up completely. Everything about this book is appealing and engaging. Such great characters, a fast-moving and captivating plot, great dialogue and overall outstanding writing made this book a winner in all categories.

I’m an ARC reader for this book and all I can say is that this book is absolutely thrilling. The characters are diverse and engaging. I found myself unable to put the book down because I just had to find out what happened next. I would highly recommend this book and I cannot wait to see more from this author.

Soft sci-fi where alien invasion meets The Hunger Games. Easy to read, fun and imperfect characters, an interesting premise, and a few twists along the way. Reading Headspace was a great way to round out my days for a few weeks.

Hot new Sci-Fi author JD EDWIN has written a fast reading, complex (yes, I said both of those things) about an alien attack of a weird and sinister sort: "Play our game show! Win or die! And if you lose, the Whole Earth pays the price!"

It was amazing! A steady beginning that perfectly set up the rest of the book. I appreciated the nuances and how it touched on humanity as a whole, I'm one to adore the psychology of human nature and this sci-fi thriller packed it all within the chapters while also not getting lost in trying to be the next big thing.
You can tell the author put in heart and soul into this piece, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new read!
The characters were more then likeable and the main protagonist felt natural, like they were a real human instead of some cookie-cutter template some other stories use. There's heart and talent in this book, and you won't regret reading it! I can't wait to read any future books by this author!

This was my first time as an ARC reader, and what a privilege it was! Headspace captivates you unwittingly! The action builds and soon you find yourself engrossed in the life of Astra, turning page after page in quick succession. You find yourself rooting for this unlikely protagonist amidst threats to herself and the world, and enchanted by the exotic 'Eleven'. How will their story end? What is in store for humanity? Definitely an exciting read!

I offered to be an ARC reader for this book. I had trouble discerning who the MC was at first, but this has probably been fixed in the final version.
A sphere appears over the ocean and before long contestants are playing for their own survival and the survival of Earth. Ms. Edwin made each challenge different and interesting while getting the reader engaged with the main characters, one of whom is a surprise.
Because I was working on other projects, I started to read only a few chapters a day to balance my projects with being able to finish the ARC in the required time. I hadn't gotten very far when the book pulled me in and I was reading as much as i could each day until the finish.
It is an enjoyable read with a satisfying ending that leaves room for further books in the series.

Blessed enough to have been given an opportunity to read an ARC copy of this book, and honestly its the first book I've actually finished (that wasn't for school) in a very long time.
The characters were so varied, complex, and real. I felt almost as if I was in the world that this complex, high-stakes reality gameshow took place it. Slice of life meets sci-fi world-ending chaos, with the world's most relatable main character ever. Astra was so real, so deep, so understandably human that I couldn't help but love her from the start.

Omg. At first I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy this book. But boy was I wrong! I was addicted by the first chapter!! I love that the way it was written takes you along the journey as well. So many twists and turns that I did not expect either. If you are into sci-thrillers go ahead and give this one a read. I definitely hope for more from this author.
Jam packed with emotions all over the place. Happy, sad, terrified, I went through them all while reading this book.
