The story is set in Australia circa 1988. When archaeologist Carolyn Wells returns home to Sydney after several months away at a dig in Tunisia, she expects to be reunited with her lover, Detective Inspector Alex Graham. But she soon learns that Alex has been wounded in a hostage incident and is recuperating at a Royal Flying Doctor Service hospital at a place in the outback of New South Wales called Three Mile Cache. Carolyn decides to fly out there and surprise Alex with her arrival.Surprises abound when she gets there. One of the doctors treating Alex has a rather intimate interpretation of a bedside manner. There are mysterious goings-on at a local homestead and Alex’s injuries haven’t stopped her from probing into the lives of the locals, much to their annoyance. When Carolyn and Alex meet again, things don’t quite work out as either of them would like. Can their relationship recover from the series of events in Three Mile Cache that threaten to keep them apart?

2.50 Stars. I’m disappointed to say that I did not enjoy this one. I knew I would not have time to read/finish a full novel tonight, unless I wanted to stay up until 3 or 4am, and with work still so crazy I knew that was not an option. And because I had a few dollars of credits for Amazon Kindle, I decided to take a chance on this quick little story by Silver. This is a fast read, longer than a short story, but it seems short for a novella so I’ll call this is a novelette.?. Not only did the length appeal to me, but I have also been interested in Silver’s work for a while now. I have her book Changing Perspectives, and Deuce, already on my Kindle and I’ve been looking forward to reading both of them. I think that’s one of the reasons why I was so bummed that I could not connect with this story. I’ve heard that writing shorter stories can be really hard and I know as a reader they can often feel rushed or like they are missing something. I’m going to hope that this is just a case of me not clicking with Silvers short stories, but hopefully I will still love her novels.
The first glaring issue for me was the characters. I lost count but I think there are at least 5 POV’s in this little 65 page story. I don’t even handle 5 POV’s well in a big epic fantasy book. To pack that many POV characters in such a small space just didn’t work. I didn’t get the chance to feel like I knew, connected, or even liked a single character. I would start to get a little interest in one but then it would switch to someone else and all that progress would be wiped out. And what I did know of the characters, I had a lot of trouble finding anything to like. I didn’t think anyone was appealing and I’m almost glad this was a quick story because I didn’t want to spend more time with them.
This paragraph is going to be slightly spoilerish. I’m saying slightly because if you read the blurb it talks about it, but because this is a shorter story I want to be overly cautious and use spoiler tags for this part.
This book also has a little intrigue part. I could not really call it a mystery because it really isn’t. It is just one character telling us that this, and this, and this, is happening because she is a super sleuth and just knows it is. Eventually the intrigue part started to become pretty over the top and it just really lost me.
I really did not want to write a review this long for a novelette, and I hate writing such a negative review on an author that I’m so looking forward to reading and haven’t read a full novel by yet. Like I mentioned earlier, I think this was just a case of an idea not working out with such a limited page length. I’m going to pretend that this almost doesn’t count and really hope that Silver’s full length novels will still be for me.
Carolyn returns to Sydney expecting to find life as she left it, but her lover Alex hasn’t fared well in the time Carolyn has been away. When she discovers Alex is recuperating after being involved in a hostage incident, Carolyn can’t help but go chasing after her. When she arrives in Three Mile Cache, what awaits is nothing like Carolyn expected and she wonders if things can ever be how they were before.
An exciting story, which although only novella length packs in lots of action, drama, heartache and hope. I loved the fast pace and the dips into Alex and Carolyn’s background but not enough to detract from the story. Carolyn was quite naïve in what she expected to find upon her return but I have to say I admired her determination to try and put things right, get back the life she left behind.
Alex was a brilliant character, edgy and daring, even with her injuries. I admired her for not wanting to give up and even though she was supposed to be resting and healing, she was busy getting herself involved in things and pushing herself. Alex isn’t without her vulnerabilities but she did a great job of hiding them from her friends and Carolyn.
A simple, short adventure story to fill a coffee break or if you just want a light read. I really enjoyed the story and wonder if there will be more from Alex and Carolyn in future, as I know there is more of story there.
A too short story with so much drama the pages turn themselves.
Alex and Caro have a connection you can feel. Distance. Caro does archeology digs months at a time and Alex is a detective that is very good at her job. These two need to connect but don't till the end of this too short story. Great characters, some really great intrigue and a love you can feel. Love it, just need more of them.
