Who do you call when you spot a baby hellhorse? Shifter Vets!
Judy desperately needs to find a home for her nineteen rescue horses. Waylon desperately needs to rein in his headstrong teenage daughter's quest to tame a wild hellhorse. And what both of them need most desperately is love...
Waylon, a bear shifter and veterinarian for magical animals, instantly recognizes Judy as his mate. But a few things stand between them and true love, namely...
1. Waylon's secret. 2. Waylon's daughter Raelynn's secret. 3. Judy's "Save the Horses" Instagram campaign's lack of likes. 4. The young hellhorse that starts wildfires every time it gets excited. 5. A dangerous beast shielded by its living armor. 6. A fire-breathing chicken.
Coming together to make a new family isn't easy. But Vets For All Pets -- and the magical animals its shifter vets care for -- has lots of practice at creating love against the odds.
Bear Vet is a sweet, feel-good shifter romance full of love, laughter, and adorable animals, perfect for reading before bedtime.
Zoe Chant loves writing paranormal romance. Over a cup of tea (or something stronger) she whips up sexy tales of hunky heroes and adventurous heroines to tantalize and satisfy her readers. Sizzling hot romance, no cliffhangers!
While series should ideally be read in order, all of Zoe’s books are standalones and can be read in any order. This includes books within series.
This might get kind of spoilery because there is something that really bugs me about this. But first: I really liked this - Waylon and Judy were really cool and Rae is amazing! Their dynamic was off the charts, not counting the one point that bugs me so much. Add that to the hellhorse and the addictive writing style and you have me sold. What really bugged me was that they were all living together and SHE STILL DIDN'T KNOW. I get that he didn't want to betray his daughter's trust and break his promise to her and I respect that. I can even respect him wanting to tell Judy about being mates before anyone else. I kind of get Rae not wanting Judy to know about her. But... It was so frustrating because having her move in and not know and asking everyone else to keep quiet about shifters when magical animals are a given, was kinda dumb (for lack of a better word) and just leaving everyone uneasy. Judy knew something was up and when it was revealed she was totally fine with being left in the dark. The whole situation around this "I'm a shifter, you're my mate" revelation just frustrated me.
I read this one after Unicorn Vet. I enjoyed this one too and I liked getting to see Rae's perspective sometimes. Looking forward to Bryan's book (I hope he gets a book!)
The story we were waiting for. In the previous book in this series we were introduced to the characters in this book, and also, to the hellhorse that causes so many problems. You can enjoy the book even if you haven't read the previous one, but I recommend reading it, it's also a short one. So in this story we have Waylon and his daughter Raelynn that are having problems, because Raelynn claims a hellhorse that got through the portal, but Waylon sees it as a danger, and does everything he can to keep them away from each other. When Judy arrives, she turns out to be Waylon's mate, and also a horse expert, ready to help Raelynn. Things get complicated because of secrets and teenage rebellion, but despite the drama, they are able to stay together and overcome all their problems and become a family. Since the book is short, some things felt a little rushed, and I feel it would have worked so much better if it had been a little longer, but still, just as it is, it's really cool and has every element necessary to make a good story. I really liked it, and I'm looking forward to more of the Shifter Vets.
While short this one packs a lot into it. I really like how Judy is pulled to Waylon and Raelynn by the hellhorse. Raelynn does a great job with the hellhorse and Judy did a great job of explaining to Waylon what she saw. I also loved how both of them were excited for Judy's horses and they did all that they could to help her move to town. I hated that Waylon had to keep his shifter secret due to Raelynn, but that worked out in the end, leaving everyone all happy.
ANOTHER WIN FOR ZOE CHANT ENTHUSIAST A new sister series to the DEFENDERS INC & PROTECTION INC. double series is now a trilogy series I LOVE IT
5 hours outside the big city of REFUGE, is a small country town of La Puerta “the gateway” aptly named as it has a magical secret . A magical portal to a mystical place where strange beautiful magical and sometimes dangerous deadly cryptoids come out. A group of shifter veterinarian friends watch closely to catch them and heal them and send them back if possible.. but not everything always goes according to plan.
Judy is a broke animal rescuer that runs a rescue for the equine variety (16 horses 2 mules & a Shetland pony) her rescue ranch is foreclosing, and she & the equines have no where to go. Then she is witness to a huge squabble between a father & daughter who clearly are not shocked by the site of a colt that can burst into flames and sets fires, Causing Judy to demand answers.

Judy doesn’t know about shifters and she has just learned about hell horses. Can she handle the rest? will secrets tear this burgeoning family apart before they can be one?
No triggers , family friendly, stand alone, book 2 of a shifter vet series and 3rd series in a of a 3 trilogy of connected series. It can be read in order or not . Old characters from previous series make appearances. Come for the magical creatures stay for the awesome story & tales of shifters their mates and their magical pets.
This is a cute shifter romance novella, the second in the Shifter Vets series. It was very short, so there wasn't time for as much character development as I normally like. It gets 3 stars from me.
I liked both Waylon and Judy, and thought they were good for each other. They both had issues that they helped each other with -- him with his daughter, and her with the funding for her horse rescue center.
I liked how Waylon never broke his promise to his daughter, even though it meant he had to keep secrets from Judy. I also liked how Judy didn't hold that against him when she found out the secret.
I also liked that this book contained several magical animals that came thru a portal in the town where Waylon lived. I hope Zoe Chant writes more books set in this town, as the possibilities for creative creatures could be endless.
My main problem with this novella is that it was just very short. I prefer longer books, so that there is room for more character development. This novella features shifter instalove, and hints at sex (but in a fade-to-black way, there are no sex scenes).
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
Judy is just looking for a ranch to relocate her horse rescue. She does not expect to find a young girl trying to tame a beautiful black colt just outside the empty barn. And she's completely taken aback when that colt runs and bursts into flames with the abrupt appearance of the girl's father. Thus begins Judy's adventure with Waylon (Grizzly Bear shifter and veterinarian) and Raelynn ( his daughter), including hell colts, flying cats, dragonettes and fluffy wolf cubs, among other precious and vicious magical creatures. Judy's introduction to this magical world is fast and amazing. Although she doesn't know yet, she's Waylon's mate. Balancing how to explain his shifter secret to Judy, while respecting his daughter and ex-wife's stories, is tough for the big, beautiful, tender and protective bear shifter. Fortunately for him Judy is not only lovely and thoughtful, she's practical and fierce. Delightful, humorous and loving, this novella is a perfect quick read.
I love the Shifter Vets series. We met them first in Unicorn Vet. Now it is Waylon and Raelynn's turn. Judy is looking at a ranch to buy for her many rescued horses. Raelynn is there trying to tame the hellhorse. Things are going well until Waylon blares in and scares the hellhorse. Then things really heat up in all ways!
The pace is fast and the tone is hopeful with a character oriented storyline that has some action from magical animals and no steamy scenes. The characters are vibrant and engaging. The whole concept of a gate where magical animals come through is fantastic, as well as shifter vets to help them. We also get to see characters from Protection Inc and Protection Inc. Defenders. I love when series connect. The lead-in to the last story in this series is really cool. I can't wait! If this sounds good to you, get both books 1 and 2, sit back and enjoy!
Judy, Waylon, Raelynn, and Black Flame Make Twenty-Six! 3.5***** Spoiler Alert!
Judy looking for a ranch to house her 16 rescued horses, including two mules plus a donkey, found La Puerta and saw the hellcolt turn into flames when spooked by Waylon's, the bear shifter get who was Raelynn's dad and Judy's mate, arrival. Their sparks of lust and love competited with the hellcolt's. Raelynn finally managed her shifting, after managing and raising the GoFundMe monies for Judy's move and ranch purchase. Yes she and Waylon had a HEA, once Raelynn told Judy her shifter secret.
Interesting plot and decent character development. I was surprised Judy did not question how Waylon knew about magical creatures and The Portal. I would have expected her to deduce their secret from Chapter Two. Honesty being the best policy ran swiftly through this novel as a theme. A Good Summer Beach read!
Bears, a flying horse and a human together make a wonderful family..
Judy is a horse rescuer and is trying to find a new place to keep her own animals. So she is looking a a nice ranch in a small town. She is surprised to see a beautiful black horse running around when a young girl, Raelynn, trying to tame the horse. Raelynn's father comes driving up to save her when the horse suddenly flames up and runs away. Waylon and Raelynn are both bear shifters. Waylon is also a vet for many animals, especially magical animals. Waylon knew from the first sight that Judy is his mate. They get along so well that Judy moves in with them even though she didn't know about them being shifters. After an attack by an armored wolf Raelynn and Waylon shifted to protect Judy so she finally found out. This is an amazing story and a great addition to this series. Definitely recommend.
I really enjoyed this sweet novella about Waylon and Judy. Judy is 45, never been married and runs a horse rescue. Waylon is a divorced single dad who is a vet and a bear shifter. They meet when Judy is touring a farm in Waylon’s town that she is thinking of moving her horse rescue to. While there, Judy sees Waylon’s daughter trying to befriend a hellhorse and that is her introduction to magical creatures. The book details their journey to navigate their fledging relationship while keeping secrets and trying to fundraise to move the horse rescue. Despite the book being short, there was some character development for both characters. This book has a little bit of everything - sweet moments, real life issues, imperfect characters, laughter, cute animals, and so much love. Another great Zoe Chant book.
These books in this series is what women dreamt of when they were kids!
I am in love with this series! Each book gets better and better, okay it’s really the magical animals that come thru the portal that get better and better! I loved that this story evolved around a single dad, who respected his cub’s desire to keep her baby bear quiet because she couldn’t learn control yet! Seriously how can a gal go wrong with a series dedicated to magically animals (baby dragonettes, Unicorn Shifter, a Hellhorse, Father & daughter bears, wolf shifter, magical gemstone frogs, a seahorse pony, a Pegasus, snow mice, etc). Please read the other books by this author and the other series! They always grab your attention and you feel like you are right there with them! Thank you very much to the author for sharing her incredible books and world with us! Enjoy!
Bear Vet: Shifter Vets #2 was a cute story with a lot of heart. This story focused on family and relationships and how it all worked for them. I enjoyed the dynamics and found them entertaining.
The romance between Judy and Waylon progressed as you would expect with a fated shifter mate, but there was a slow burn due to an existing child in the mix. This was not an overly exotic or sexually explicit paranormal romance story.
The author has a wonderful imagination and let it ride with all the different magical creatures in this book. I found myself intrigued by this new world Zoe Chant created and will be seeking out further books by this author.
Zoe Chant has written another wonderful story of a shifter finding their soul mate and the complications they need to handle before their happy ever after begins. Waylon is divorced, has a horse crazy teen daughter and is part of a 3 vet clinic near a magical portal that takes care of the animals that pop out of it. Judy is looking for a property to buy for her horse rescue, which is her whole life. Being middle aged she believes she has missed her opportunity for a husband and kids, but luckily she meets Waylon and his daughter. The author must have read a wonderful book called “Playing with Fire” by R.J.Blain to get the idea of the special horse named Black Flame. I highly recommend both books.
can I call it a slow burn if I read the book in a day??
Yes we pick up where we left off with the heallhorse, but we also get introduced to the new female MC of the story before we bump into anyone we know.
It feels very teenage centered, but shouldn’t it be concerning we are trying to get with a Dad who had a 13 year old daughter?
There is no sex in this story and I’m a little upset that the blank blank didn’t play a larger part in the story
You are also once again reminded that these people are part of side stories to the Protection Inc stories. They were actually named dropped in this book.
But it was a fun read if not a little tiring with the girl. I understand why, but also proved to me that I don’t want kids.
So things worked out for Waylon and Judy, and Rae is A okay with her Hellhorse. Black Flame sure is a smart horse he defended his owner and the rest of the family too. He even allowed Rae to ride him..big progress. All is well with Waylon and his new found family..but what in the name of all that's holy, Bryan has wings, wings. I shave never really heard about a winged wolf before, but I can't wait to read his story. And it's good to see our old friends from Protection Inc gracing us with their presents, I knew we would see some of them again, always a pleasure to see them, or read about about again..love it...big fan as always Winzie19🤗💞.
Judy is looking for a place to relocate her Horse Rescue, when she sees a beautiful young black colt, and the young girl trying and succeding in gaining it's trust, when fast driven pickup pulls in and the driver jumps out yelling the colt takes off with flames from it's hoofs and body starting little fires. Judy joins the fire fight, while puzzling over the colt and listening to father and daughter fight. Welcome to Bear Vet's. Where not every thing is what it seems to be. A promise, a budding love, danger, and a surprise at the end.
Loved it. Especially his relationship with his daughter and her teenager angst. Was a little confused about her animal rescue and bank situation. Why looking for another property if her home was foreclosed on? How could she afford one before his daughter helped solve money issue. And who was taking care of her group while she was out looking for property? And why did she take more then one day at motel? Takes only few hours to tour property and get back on road home. Should have said that with new property taxes she needed to sell and move to less expensive area.
It's a cute story. I love the magical pets and all the different species that show up from the portals. I love the interaction between Rae and Black Flame. Finding out about Bryan during this story was kind of funny but so sweet. Looking forward to his story. I like seeing the return of moon bow and her family. They are among my favorites. I do think the story could have had more meat to it. Its a nice story and I enjoyed it. Just felt like it needed more. Any fix I get of the magical pets is welcomed.
Magical animals, a vet, his daughter, and the mate who has just fallen down a rabbit hole into a new world. What could be next?
Bear shifter Waylon just meet his mate, but his and his daughter, Raelynn's, shifter secret is now a huge stumbling block. Raelynn soes not want Judy to know the shifter secret, but she is wanting help taming the young hellhorse she is desperate to keep. And Judy's horse reauce may be the key.
Read this story to see how it goes. Another great book from Zoe Chant
Enjoyable for a short read but left me with questions. Due to the shortness of the story, a few things are glossed over or ignored. (Waylon has been married/divorced and has a 13-year-old daughter, so obviously was too impatient to wait for his True Mate). WHY? Give us a reason. Don’t really feel that this was a romance as that felt lacking but the overall story was entertaining if a bit dragged out due to not telling Judy about being shifters. Wasn’t keen on the one big happy family scenario at the end, especially as the ex-wife is a shifter too. Read through Kindle Unlimited.
Another feel-good romance from Zoe Chant. Judy is a horse rescuer without a home. Waylon a bear shifter vet with a hell-horse problem. It takes just one look for Waylon to recognize his mate, but there are still a lot of problems to overcome!
This is a quick, cosy read, perfect for when you don’t have a lot of time to read. It’s part of an enjoyable world, and features a quick cameo from some Protection Inc. characters. The magical creatures are fun, and add a hint of fairytale to this entertaining series.
Recommended for those who enjoy paranormal romance.
I really liked this series [only 2 books] and hope that there will be more. The premise of a magic Portal that opens and releases various magical beasts into La Puerta, opens into an endless variety of beasts and stories.
Not too deep of a story, but still interesting and fun to read. You never know what is going to show up and how it needs to be handled. A Unicorn that can't heal but can calm, and a wolf that has its own surprises, shifters are interesting and variable.
Judy has 16 horses, 2 donkeys and a mule and is looking for a new place for Horse Hope Rescue when she sees a beautiful black colt appears. She doesn't recognize the breed of the colt the she sees a young girl holding a carrot out for the colt. The truck engine scares the colt who bursts into flames setting the area on fire and runs away. Raelynn , Judy and Waylon put the fires out. Raelynn wants to keep the hellhorse, she and her father are bear shifters. Good story and characters.
Bear Vet (Shifter Vets) by Zoe Chant. Judy runs a horse rescue ranch but she’s run out of money and ranch is being taken back by the bank. She goes to view a ranch in La Puerta and sees a young girl trying to coax a young horse to her. The arrival of the girls father frightens the horse which bursts into flames and sets fire to the field. The girls father, Waylon is a bear shifter and vet takes one look at Judy and finds she is his fated mate. Judy feels the attraction as well.
These are not only quick reads but GREAT reads. Clean romance of fated mates…my favorite…and shifters. I especially loved how we got Raelynn’s point of view here. Her unique perspective made the story so much more. You really got the feeling of family then. Full of great feels with the horses and father daughter struggles but also new love. Very excited to see where book 3 goes.
I love the story How two people find love and unexpected adventure and a teen daughter. I've read all your books I love how you bought it all around. I can't wait to read more and see if defenders on east coast and west coast come together with the vet pets and all magical pets and their mates to fight the unknown. I'm looking forward to ride the rollercoaster ride.
It was a good romance but whole chunks of explanations seemed missing. Judy left her herd of horses for days. Who was taking care of them? Surely the ranch had a house on the property. What about that and how could she live elsewhere with her boyfriend with that many animals? I felt at one point I had skipped a whole lot of story. They meet? His daughter puts out media pleas for donations and a week later she is moving in. How?
A sweet and different kind of shifter story! I enjoyed this book because of the varied shifters in it. I liked the way the romance progressed at a normal pace. I even liked the way the character's personalities developed. I thought some things got stretched out too far, like the whole reveal thing, but it still worked with the story. I'm looking forward to seeing if Bryan has a story coming up because I really want to know why he's so grumpy all the time.
Shifter vets is a somewhat different take on a way to have shifter romances. Shifters are popular, especially alphas with empathy and vets must have empathy to do their mob. Also vets are popular romance heroes. So 2 tropes for the price of one. Gentle humour and imagination let loose with magical animals who can look like anything as you have the ideal excuse. Fun, light and a quick read.
