Sonja F. Blanco grew up in New England where she ran barefoot through the woods, chased lightning bugs, tapped maple trees for syrup, and built towering snow castles.

Having an ancestor who was hung as a witch, Sonja is naturally drawn to all things magical and fantastical—trees and cemeteries in particular.

At 5’2” she is often caught climbing tables, chairs, and small children to reach the upper shelves. She likes coffee and tea equally, both of which most certainly contributed to her diminutive stature.

Witty comics easily amuse her, as do heavily jowled Hell Hounds that talk in their sleep.
She writes fantasy as if it were real, because believing makes it so.

4-stars.

This was a good YA book by an author who has a bright future.

The author does a lot of things well and has constructed a very good book here that can be read as a standalone novel. which made it very readable for me.

There were a couple of things that I felt might have been over-used in this story which is the reason why I have given it 4-stars instead of 5.

1) Sara does tend to chew on her lip a lot. Maybe she was just hungry? Lol.
2) "Whishing" seems to be another often used term.

I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more of her work in the future as the author grows in confidence and perfects her craft.

Thank you Sonja F. Blanco for providing me with an ARC of Witch of Ware Woods! I'm so honoured I had the chance to read this book and be able to tell you all about it.

We love watching an MC grow and Sara is the perfect character to follow. She's different than everyone around her and her special abilities mean that she can't be around others often because she might lose control. When her parents finally decide to bring her to Ware Woods, their home growing up, everything goes wrong and Sara is thrust into a world she knew nothing about.

She meets an entire family she never knew existed and makes friends like she never could before including the dark-haired, blue-eyed Thomas with whom she shares a deep connection. But, everything isn't perfect yet. With dark magic trying to penetrate the walls of the forest and an unknown force after her inside the wall, Sara must learn to harness her power to save everyone she's begun to love and care about.

Witch of Ware Woods is the perfect fantasy for all of you witchy lovers. It has wonderful world-building, so Blanco has set the scene for the books to come. Her characters are very well thought out and the friendships and connections felt real.

I can't wait to read more about Sara, Thomas, and the rest of the Ware Woods witches. Her story is only beginning and she definitely has a lot of fight left in her!

Witch of Ware Woods by Sonja F. Blanco

🌟🌟🌟🌟

This book was a solid 4 stars for me. As many of you know I’m a picker reader, and this book has a lot of great things going for it and a few things that irked me.

I won’t go too much into what irked me because one of the majors things was a character issue that is a personal preference for me, where I ended up empathizing too much with a side character and it took away from the story for me. This is not something the average reader will face. The only thing that was hard was around the 20-30% mark it got a bit info heavy and I got a bit bored with it. But I was well rewarded for pushing through that dry bit and ended up really enjoying the story.

So on to the great parts. The characters (and there are a lot of them which I personally LOVE) were so much fun. They felt deep and real and even the side characters had quirks. I can tell you fun facts about all of them and how they fit into the world and each other, which is amazing in a book with this many characters. The magic structure was different and unique compared to most of what you read which was also great to see. I also learned a lot about trees, so I know Sonja really did her research on the specific trees she used in the story and picked them for specific reasons and not just randomly.

So that being said, if you love urban (or modern) fantasy and magic stories with witches and kick ass female leads with chips on their shoulder from dark pasts, pick up Witch of Ware Woods and support an amazing indie author!

Witch of Ware Woods By Sonja Blanco
5/5

Witch of Ware Woods was an unexpected dark delight. This urban paranormal fantasy is full of dark magic, mystery, cemeteries, prophecy, and forbidden romance. Sonja does an incredible job combining dark and light magic, each side having its own force and color. She also excels at describing scenes with vast amounts of details and imagery. I felt like I was in Ware Woods with Sara, feeling all of her guilt, angst, and torturous feelings.

The main character Sara is a total badass in disguise. First, she is NOT a victim and always fights back to the best of her ability. She is constantly filled with guilt and is unsure if darkness truly dwells within her. She is a strong character because she is willing to sacrifice everything for those she loves and push past barriers others wouldn’t dream of nearing.

I also enjoyed Sara and Thomas’s forbidden relationship. Right from the beginning, they have an electrifying connection. Sara feels connected to Thomas in a way that defies reason. He is the “bad boy” of the woods, and Sara is warned away from him. Their relationship is tested right from the beginning and you are rooting for them the entire book.

I also enjoyed the community of families within Ware Woods. Each of the families has its own unique soul tree. The families live separately but often come together for celebrations or the meeting every full moon. Different levels of hierarchy were created depending upon what the abilities within the families are.

I recommend this book to readers who love descriptive scenes, dark themes, challenging characters, witches, and a world you can completely lose yourself in.

A deeply engaging and exciting dive into a fresh magickal world filled with the beauty and power of nature, coupled with an inspiring look at people’s two roles as both part and caretaker of it. A thrilling, energetic, captivating adventure, this story overflows with witty dialogue, powerful magick, and wonderful relationships, all set within a vivid and magnificent land. I loved seeing Sara awakening into her power and herself, finding that she is truly more than she ever expected.

The characters are both relatable and mystical, bringing together the best qualities of both. I was so transported into the world of Ware Woods that I forgot to breathe while I was reading! If you need a break from the mundane, I highly recommend this book as your portal!

This book is full of everything I love. A magical forest, a powerful and assertive female protagonist, family secrets, mysterious dark forces, and a blossoming love (and lust) so intriguing, it made putting this book down near impossible. The plotline unravelled at an even pace, with twists and turns I didn't see coming, and the character dynamics were so charming and real, I wanted nothing more than to hang out with them myself—antics and all. I can't wait to get swept away in this enchanting world again.

This book had so much potential, but unfortunately, it fell flat. The overall idea is really great, but the execution wasn't there. The biggest issue was that there was no emotion in this book. There were horrific things happening, but I didn't feel anything. The MC is supposed to feel all sorts of rage, but it just doesn't come through. The world building also wasn't fleshed out. I still don't understand what is so special about the woods or how the sacred woods interact with each other or the outside world. The hierarchy within the woods and the relationships between the families is also confusing. And the whole book just needed better editing. The entire psych ward subplot should have been cut. It had nothing to do with the rest of the story and the MC didn't even seem effected by it. She never grieved and apparently didn't have PTSD or anything, so what was the point? There was also way too much filler/fluff after the climax/final battle. But what really cemented my rating was that I didn't really care about any of the characters. I just never got a feel for any of them. There was no connection. I won't be reading any future books if this series continues.

Incredible Debut From Sonja Blanco!

Witch of Ware Woods is a fantastic story wrapped in impeccable writing!

I absolutely love everything about Sarah, an awkward introvert and the main character of this story. Blanco does an amazing job showing us why we should love Sarah from jump, then she quickly creates tragedy and conflict with the execution of a pro. The first quarter of this story pulled me in, checking every box a brilliant story must have.

What I loved most about the middle chapters was learning about Ware Woods, magic, and all the new characters introduced throughout, including Sarah’s love interest. Discovering the secrets of Ware Woods along with Sarah made the whole thing flow naturally.

I won’t tell you about the last part of the book as I don’t want to give spoilers, but trust me when I tell you—it’s epic! Once you finish, you’re sure to be as excited for the next book as I am!

Disclaimer: The publisher gave me an advanced reader copy of this book. However, all opinions expressed within this review are mine and mine alone. Plus, I enjoyed the book so much I purchased a copy for my library.

Okay, so I always love starting a new fantasy series, and when I discovered Sonja F. Blanco’s “Witch of Ware Woods,” I was immediately intrigued!

This book had such a unique premise, and I was definitely here for it! I thought that Blanco’s writing style is utterly captivating, and that was huge part of the reason why I loved this book so much.

The world building and complex characters had me hooked from start to finish. This book is told from the POV of an eighteen year old girl named Sara, and I found her to be an interesting and well developed main character.

The setting was also very original, and I was intrigued by the different kinds of magic. This book was also pretty action-packed, which was enjoyable as well. To sum this up, I’m really glad I decided to read this book, and I will definitely be continuing the series.

I’d like to thank Sonja F. Blanco for the opportunity to read an advance review copy of Witch of Ware Woods. The following review is my honest opinion.

Witch of Ware Woods is a paranormal fantasy, filled with dark witches, dangerous magic, soul trees and cemeteries, and forbidden romance. In this coming of age novel, a young woman named Sara is exploring her shadows, finding her community, and learning how to harness her power.

From the start, Blanco pulled me into the story with action-packed scenes and some well-timed twists and turns that kept me guessing. I really enjoyed the cast of characters, from Sara, the fierce protagonist, to one of my favorites, Gran, who melted my heart with her potions and wisdom. Because there are multiple families in this novel, it took a beat to acclimate to all the characters, but each family enriched the story as their unique roles were revealed.

One of Blanco’s greatest strengths is her ability to engage the senses and evoke powerful imagery. One moment I was flying through the treetops and the next I was sinking into the heart of the earth. And oh, how I loved the thrilling romance between Sara and Thomas! As they turned up the heat, I kept turning the pages. I just had to see what was going to happen next!

Blanco’s debut soars with heart, humor, and bite. She certainly knows how to pen a swoon-worthy romance, and I look forward to the next tome in this captivating fantasy series!

Witch of Ware Woods is a coming of age story for Sara Lochtan, who grows up knowing she is different, but never understands why. That is until a tragic accident brings her to Ware Woods, a magical community that, unbeknownst to her, her family has long been a part of.

When the community finds itself under attack, Sara must find a way to break a dark curse and master her powers in order to save her new home.

Witch of Ware Woods is a perfect read for the fall season. Ware Woods itself felt like its own character, a magical forest with both its own secrets and agenda. I enjoyed getting to know members of the 5 families and especially Sara's cousin, Caleb and half brother, Ian. Sonja definitely puts Sara through a lot early on in the book, but her trials help Sara become the champion that Ware Woods needs later in the story.

If you are a looking for a good witchy read this season, definitely pick up Witch of Ware Woods. The ending will definitely leave you wanting to find out what is next in store for these characters.

Witch of Ware Woods was the contemporary urban fantasy I didn't know I needed! Combining elements of New England Gothic with a more classic, if still magical, bildungsroman results in lots of fun! Add in some excellent immersive world-building and a rather steamy romance and you've got a great read for some much-needed escapism. Despite the fantastical setting, I think that any teen will relate to protagonist Sara's struggles with identity, relationships, and finding your place in the world. Great for older fans of Harry Potter or Keeper of the Lost Cities. 5/5

I was so impressed with this book! The characters were fantastic and I was excited to see their depth & the small (and potentially to grow) redemption arcs. This paranormal fantasy provided a fresh take on the genre in that the story was driven by love, but not romance. There was romance, which was great too, but it didn't overpower the story.

The female MC was equal parts unsure of herself & full of inner strength to do what was right and needed to protect those she loved even if it scared the crap out of her. I loved reading about the different types of witches in the Ware Woods and I can't wait to read more from Blanco!

4/5 ⭐️

Reminded me of a witchy New England FernGully with a demonic presence instead of a pollution one. The sensory imagery captured by Blanco really transport you to Ware Woods and make you believe in the magic of the forest.

Sara is an underdog MC with a chip on her shoulder and I love her. The story that unfolds around her is part supernatural horror, part handsome love interest, and an all around magical journey of self discovery, found family, and believing in ones ability to control their own destiny.

I really liked the relationship that Blanco captures between the forest and the characters, not just Sara, but all the residents of Ware Woods. It’s more than just a place, it’s a whole character on its own. I feel the magic and I would *love* to be a witch in these woods!

There were moments I laughed, moments I cried, and moments I was shipping so hard I was sure to build the titanic! (Thomas xoxo) Can’t wait for the next part of Sara’s story!

This is the debut novel for Author Sonja F. Blanco. I was gifted a copy from the author. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated for this review.

First off, I want to say how much I truly enjoyed this book. It did not feel like a debut and I was so engrossed in the story that I lost time while reading. This book weaves a tale of a lost soul and brings her to the surface where she can be seen. I enjoyed the MC who is thrust into a world that she knows nothing about. She makes friends and learns where she truly belongs and I found myself rooting for her. I loved the world build and magic system in this book. All were so intricate but explained in an easy way to comprehend. The mystery in the story had me guessing the entire time and I could not figure it out no matter how hard I tried...LOL. This book was very well written and I enjoyed every page. I look forward to more from this author and can't wait to see where we go in the next book. I give this story 5 very big, magic filled stars.

If you are looking for witch-themed YA urban fantasy THIS is it! With a truly unique magical structure, author Sonja F Blanco will pull you into the wonder and magic of Ware Woods. In a beautiful, mystical forest setting, the power of trees and wisdom from the past is all around, as you follow the tale of protagonist Sara.

The buildup of action, engaging characters, and excellent world building will compel you into this fascinating tale of teen love, be-witching magic, and personal growth. I'm absolutely amazed with how Sonja created such a unique magical system in a modern day setting, inviting you to see the magic and wonder in our everyday world. Excited to read book 2!

Sonja F. Blanco weaves a tapestry of vivid imagery, with beautiful prose that pulls the reader right into the story. This is definitely a character-driven novel set in a beautifully developed world, with well-defined characters that fit their environment. They really come alive! The conflict and emotional turmoil all felt quite real. The magic is believable. The relationships are fantastic. (Ian might be my favorite character, but it's hard to choose!)

Paranormal contemporary fiction isn't my usual fare (I prefer high fantasy as a rule), but I found myself quickly invested in Sara's plight and her struggle to fit in. Her pain is real, her growth believable. There's plenty of friction, love, and mystery to fill every page.

There are a few slow moments, and some stilted dialogue throughout, but nothing that really flung me out of the story.

In short, Witch of Ware Woods is a solid and exciting debut novel, perfect for fans of witches, magical realism, and strong female leads.

Content warning for sensitive readers: There is a fade-to-black sex scene that gets a bit involved before the cut off. There's also a fair amount of swear words, though no F-bombs. Violence isn't constant but does occur, involving several deaths, blood loss, and brief descriptions of charred remains.

**Thank you to the author for providing an ARC of this novel. I'm voluntarily leaving an honest review.**

What I Did Like:
+There’s a sort of dark and mysterious vibe here where you know you aren’t being told everything. That’s always sort of delicious when you’re being introduced to magic and magical woods.
+The magic structure is well thought-out and interesting. I have a feeling you’ll be able to continue exploring it even more in the rest of the series, and I’m excited for that!
+The complex cast adds to the magic of the story. This one has a LARGE cast with a lot of connections. I was afraid it would get overwhelming but, instead, the large cast all lends itself to the story. Most of them seem realistic and add something to the vibe.

Who Should Read This One:
-Fans of dark themes, large casts, magic, and all things witchy will love this one.

My Rating: 3 Stars

I was given this book to review as part of Love Books Tours!
It took a long time to get into and definitely a long time to get to the main point of the book, so I wasn’t sure how it would go. However, once I got into it, the story was interesting and kept me guessing what would happen next.

Witch of Ware Woods is such a clever story. The incorporation of nature is incredibly inventive. The trees are a major part of life in Ware Woods, and not in a normal way. They provide shelter and transportation to the families living there.

Sara is a tough cookie. She progresses from a teen who didn’t fit it to an amazing woman wielding powers that exceed all of the others.

There is a bit of everything in Witch of Ware Woods. Sara has a bit of a romance in the works. There are close-knit families, but also some dislike others. There is drama, evil, and fighting galore. Sara comes into her powers and exceeds everyone’s expectations.

I also think the cover is absolutely stunning!

Ohmygod! I loved it. What an unexpected, magical surprise! I dived into this book not really expecting anything and boy am I glad I did. What an excellent word building by Sonja, I mean I could literally feel myself in that mystical world. Awesome!

Sara, 18 yr old, has unique special abilities which she is not able to control and hence she is isolated from others and her home. However, a devastating circumstance forces her to return back to her home - Ware Woods. A home for witches, shapeshifters and other magical beings including magical trees. There she forms a deep connection with her family who she didn't know existed. She also meets enigmatic Thomas with whom she forms an immediate “electrifying” connection. However she is still not at peace since she is scared of the dark side of her powers. On the other hand there is dark magic out there threatening to destroy the forest and everyone she cares about.

I loved Sara. I loved Ian. I loved Caleb. I loved Thomas. I loved everyone. Honestly I can't find one single issue with this book. It reeled me right in. And I just wanted to live in the Ware Woods with magnificent soul trees, beautiful animals, wondrous nature and of course magic! Omg I loved it. This is easily one of my favorite reads this year.

All fantasy and magic lovers out there. You need to read this. Absolutely recommended!

I loved this book! The world building, the characters, the whole story was just so magical and different for me from other fantasy books.

My favorite part is the Ware Woods forest! The descriptions of this world made me want to be there.

There was a few creepy parts that gave me a nightmare because I was reading late at night before bedtime 😂 so love the vivid description. Love the new found family, the character development, just so so good!

WOWW is a stunning display of imagery. Sonja made me believe I was there in the Ware Woods, experiencing what Sara was experiencing. I never wanted to be a witch so bad! Ware Woods is magical, mysterious, full of people that are close knit and a community that comes together in many ways to help one another out. There is love, action, laughter, and adventure weaved seamlessly into the story and leaves you wanting more at the end. Thankfully, there will be more books to look forward too. :)

Of course, I love romance so the connection between Thomas and Sara is literally electrifying and I'm here for it! Their relationship is tested in many ways and you root for them the whole time!

But where there is light, there is always darkness and Sara must fight it..whether it's from within herself or the outside world. Can she save herself and Ware Woods from deadly forces? Read to find out.

I received an ARC copy of Witch of Ware Woods and am leaving my honest review.
