Devil in the Details

Lydia
I learned the hard way that alcohol and bad decisions don't mix. After a crazy night in Vegas, I married—and promptly divorced—Army Ranger Xander McLean. I told myself it was for the best when we went our separate ways. Except fate had other plans. With no way to contact him overseas, our daughter is a secret I've carried for nearly the past two years. I've resigned myself to being a single mother—until Xander shows up one night out of the blue and stirs all those old feelings to life…

Xander
My feet have barely touched America soil when an unexpected letter from my lawyer delivers shocking news; due to a technicality, Lydia and I are still married. But that's not the only surprise—I have a little girl who looks just like me. The fact that Lydia kept my daughter a secret makes me want to throttle her. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to do a hell of a lot more to her, too. The spark I felt two years ago is still there, burning bright as ever, and I'll be damned if I let her get away a second time. When danger hits close to home, I'll do everything in my power to keep my family safe—and win Lydia's heart in the process.

New author for me

And a good one at that. Liked the story but hated that they were apart for so long. They met in Vegas and got married. He had to go back the service and she couldn't get a hold of him. There was drama at first over the secret baby and why she didn't tell him but she did try. He has left the service and is starting a security company and He wants to get to know the baby. There are some strange occurrences happening at her Bridal shop and the baby gets kidnapped. I was surprised at the villain though. Actually a very good book and I will read more by this author. His celibacy is unclear but she was definitely celibate. She went out on a date but it was awful. He crashed it. He really was a great guy. Loved the ending.

I’m pretty sure I picked this up as a freebie at some point… I hope… I tried to hang in there, but I wasn’t feeling it for two reasons. I lack patience for mc’s that whine for something, then either reject or get angry when they get what they whined for... And… I’m not a fan of the harpy h.

In a nutshell, Lydia met Xander in Vegas at a wedding. She’d recently been dumped, and was down for some fun. The two spend a drunken night declaring affection and end up hitched. The next morning, Lydia is FURIOUS that Xander tricked her into marriage (even though she suggested it) and tries to sneak off after asking for some space. Xander is smitten (no idea why) and pretty much begs her to give them a chance to get to know each other. He’s returning to service soon, but she’s not interested, and asks for a divorce. While on tour Xander receives the divorce/annulment papers which he signs and ships back. Meanwhile Lydia realizes she’s preggers (how this took longer than filing for divorce 🤷‍♀️) and tries to reach out with an email to talk. Xander is pretty heartbroken, and already having signed the papers, ignores the email. FFWD 20 months later, where we find Lydia with a baby daughter feeling lonely thinking on Xander with regret… until he returns then she avoids him and tries to blow him off.🙄

So to recap… She said she wanted nothing to do with him, and pretty coldly rejected him. Then missed him and cried when she received the annulment papers back (that she filed) but, acts hostile AGAIN when she’s told they’re still married, and doesn’t tell him he has a kid. He discovers this by accident. (which is weird because she sent an email intent on telling him) Xander is flat, and Lydia is just too much for me.

I’d been an emotional mess the past two days, snapping at everyone and ready to cry at the drop of a hat. (after she blew him off)

Nothing. Nada. Not a phone call, no emails, not a visit to my house or the salon. Brenda had asked about him once but promptly dropped the subject when I practically bit her head off. (again after nastily blowing him off)

Oh, God. Just the thought of Xander and Alexia—the daughter he knew nothing about—in the same building was almost enough to make me hyperventilate.

Bottom Line- Not for me, but if you like a “spirited” h and a second-chance, secret baby romance, it might be for you. It takes almost halfway to get here, and I wasn’t even interested enough to skip to the end.

I’d been hoping to win her over again, but knowing I had a little girl changed things. If Lydia still wanted an annulment, I would grant it to her. No matter what happened between us, the only truly important thing now was our daughter. I wanted to make sure she grew up knowing that she was loved and cherished, and I planned to start right now.

Xander is going to be your favorite in this series! He's mines just so you know! You know the Vegas nights the go from drinking to all of a sudden you wake up with a ring on your finger... well this one starts that way and then you are blown through a series of emotions that grip you from start to finish. Xander and Lydia are the perfect match in all ways! I love this series and cant wait for more!!

I really enjoyed this book! Normally I am not a fan of military/ex-military books but this one was just so different. This was also the first book I can have ready by this author and I can say nothing but great things. I will definitely be reading more from her! Also, single parent books are one of my faves.

Xander and Lydia met one night in Vegas while both were there for bachelor/bachelorette parties. The two were having such a good time that they decided to get married that night. But waking up, they realized it may have been a mistake and then get a divorce. After about 2 years, Xander comes back from overseas and learns that his divorce is not final and that he has a daughter. Lydia has been running her bridal shop and taking care of her daughter when she finds out her husband is back and that he is not her ex-husband. After spending time together for their daughter, both Lydia and Xander decided to actually give their marriage a try.

An amazing story where what happened in Vegas definitely didn't stay in Vegas! The kind of hit he took when he returned from overseas to find out they were still married was predictable and yet still the depth of emotional response came as a surprise. I loved her current lifestyle, from her shop to the living arrangements, and I loved it even more when he came crashing through her life like a wrecking ball. The way he took care of both Lydia and their daughter really moved me, I didn't see that kind of tender parental instinct in him at first. The twist was amazing, too!

Holy cow.

Morgan can write a good suspenseful love story. One night stands, break in’s, theft, kidnapping, it’s all here and keeps you turning these pages. Great book.

James gives us yet another fantastic addition to the Quentin Security Series with a mix of romance and suspense. Can I call dibs on Xander right now because he is perfection! Devil in the Details is a fun, fast, hot, wonderful read full of "will they or won't they". This story takes love at first sight to a whole other level! We get to learn all about new QSG addition, Xander, plus get to see old favorites Blake and Victoria. While there is some character overlap the story overlap is minimal so you could read this as a standalone, even though it is technically book two in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed this read and look forward to the next book in the series, Devil in Disguise.

Family Politics or is it Politics of a Different Nature?

I would like to think that it is a combination!
I have to make a confession!
For the most part of my life I have lived with a "Jolene" for a parent!
I have not ever had a family without a lot of strife, so I can relate to Liddy, I don't know how Xander's mother felt when he joined the military.
I do know that after 32 years of marriage I married the wrong person!
I have been with him for 35 years, a son who joined the military before he graduated from high school.
I am a grandmother to a grandson who joined the Marines.
I am proud of the men and women who serve our country and I do always pray for their safety.
I love Alxeia who brings back memories of my kids as they made tracks through their lives!
This is a story of laughter, hope, smiles, tears, stupid mistakes we as humans make in our lives.
The question is this: are man or woman enough to own up to you part of the moment you screwed up?
I loved it!
I think it is "Family drama and politics"!

This was my first book by Morgan James and I enjoyed it a lot! I love secret baby and second chance romance books and this was very well done. The storyline was compelling, the characters were very likable. The editing was well done. I highly recommend this book and I will look to read more by Morgan.

Wonderful book. I truly enjoyed this book with its Vegas beginning. The ending seemed rush, but it worked out. I wished Alexia would have said DaDa. This seemed to have had a different sort of storylines.

Zander and Lydia's story

Zander never knew he was a father until he finished his last tour of duty and went to find the person he married on a drunk night. The roller coaster of the story was exciting and and interesting to read. I read it in a day. Hats off to the Morgan James!

This story started-out so promising but it fizzled pretty fast. The relationship between Xander and Lydia was okay, however the rest of the story just didn't hold my interest.

I didn't know this was a series when I started, but I don't think it totally necessary to read the first book, I got the idea of what was going on.

First, it was an enjoyable read. However, it sort of felt like multiple books rolled into one. I would have loved to get more background and more story with them actually together. Otherwise, its a fun, quick read.

OMG

This has to be the slowest book I've ever read! I had to skim several pages at a time throughout the book just to get through it! It was extremely boring, but I hate not finishing a book. So I forced myself to do it.
The was to much inner dialog to get through. The female character was to insecure, and actually rude at times to her employees. I didn't like how she treated the male character at all! He was so sweet to her, especially after he found out about their baby. She was never going to tell him about her. If it had been for the divorce papers not being signed, he never would have known. That's just ridiculous! Of That's not mentioned in the book. I hated her attitude of being superior to him because she was the mother to their baby. No he wasn't perfect, but he tried really hard to be for her!

3.5 stars.

This book sucked me in and I read it in one evening, but it left me wanting. While I loved the plot and thought the twists, turns and mysteries were great, there were a few things I didn't like.

1) I didn't like who the villain was and why they did what they did. Honestly, it was way too far-fetched to me. It would've made sense if it happened after the reconnection, but it was set into motion before and that just didn't make a whole lot of sense.

2) I didn't feel enough love, romance or connection between Lydia and Xander. I really wanted to love them together, but one quick night drunk in Vegas does not love make. Then after almost two years separated, you're still in love? I wanted to see the connection fostered, grown and nurtured, and instead got a heavy dose of insta-love, some push-pull that made little sense and some sex. I didn't get the romantic relationship at all.

Overall, this was a good story. It didn't do enough to make me want to read the rest in the series, but I enjoyed it. As always, YMMV.

Xavier and Lydia are such a great couple. The chemistry and passion is something that sets a relationship goal.
They meet, drink too much and make decision that when sober seems to hard to comprehend for basic strangers. But when they both don’t sign a document is this a sign? Can they be a family?
Morgan has written such a great book you would be crazy not to give it a go.
Quentin security series looks like a series where you need a fan and a bottle of wine.

HEA twisty security romance

Morgan James is a new to me author. Devil in Disguise is book 2 in her Quentin Security Series. This story ticks all the boxes, angst, steamy, twisty, HEA. While this book is part of a series, I didn’t feel like I missed anything reading it out of sequence.

The story was engaging and kept me up way past bedtime to read more. Well crafted and just enough difference between the usual romance to keep me wondering how it was going to end.

However, the version I read in Hoopla read more like a rough draft than a finished copy at about the halfway mark. One chapter started with notes as to what was to happen in it and spoiled the surprise of who the villain was in the book. Another chapter ended with how Lydia was supposed to be feeling, which was not portrayed in the actual text. Names were misspelled, he/her was mixed up, and several other mistakes that should have been caught in the proofing process. I'm hgiving the author four stars, guessing that the wrong copy was uploaded to Hoopla and we got a draft version instead of the final copy because this was a really good story line that I truly enjoyed reading.
