Leighann was faced with the most trying time of her life by raising her daughter alone. With her self-esteem plummeting and her bank account draining, she never pictured she would catch the eye of a celebrity at the lounge she worked in. The mere thought of him being interested in her was unbelievable to her. Can she get over her own self-doubt to accept the possibility of true love? Evan had his share of one-night stands and fame-bunnies and was no stranger to the tabloid scandals. He has never dealt with a woman who could not only hold her own, but wanted nothing to do with him or the life he was so comfortable with leading. Nothing has been more important to him than protecting her and her daughter from the invasive species of the paparazzi, which leads him to a feeling he has never felt before. America's leading man could finally find love with someone real, unlike the string of women he has been used to. Will he be able to get her to believe in love, or will his team step in and put an end to them before his bachelor antics are gone for good?
Boston Darlin' is a tough book to rate because on one hand, the representation seen in this book is much needed. We have our female main character, Leighann, who is plus-sized and has a disabled daughter named Madison. Both characters are so strong and have gone through so much in their life, and I couldn't help but fall in love with them. I also love how protective Evan was of both of them from the beginning of the book. On the other hand, however, Leighann and Evan's relationship felt very awkward and clumsy, especially with how back and forth their relationship was. Leighann led Even on constantly, almost giving him what he wanted before walking away, sometimes literally leaving him until the next scene. I guess I just didn't get to feel the chemistry between them for very long because as soon as they finally admitted how deep their feelings went, they were split up by the end of the same chapter. There was a bit too much petty drama for me, especially as most of these characters were supposed to be professionals in their careers. Unfortunately, Boston Darlin' wasn't for me, but I love the cover and would be willing to try something else by this author in the future! The foundation is here.
CW for sexual content, assault, loss of parent (in past), alcoholism (in past, parent), divorce, abandonment, violence, fatphobia.
Thanks to Romance me with Books and the author for the opportunity to read and review Boston Darlin'.
Leighann is a single mother raising a disabled daughter. With her self-esteem plummeting & her bank account draining, she never pictured catching the eye of an A-list celebrity. She can’t believe he’d really be interested in her. Can she get over her self-doubt to accept the possibility of true love?
Evan’s had one-night stands & fake PR relationships & was no stranger to tabloid scandals. In Leighann he finds a gorgeous curvy woman who holds her own & wants nothing to do with him or his life. He finds himself wanting to protect her & her daughter from the paparazzi, which leads him to a feeling he’s never felt before. Will he be able to get her to believe in love, or will his team put an end to them before his bachelor antics are gone for good?
What I liked: · sweet romance featuring plus size female lead. · hot celebrity attracted to non-celebrity · steamy scenes · grand romantic gestures · HEA • Great rep of disabilities
What could have been better, but this is just me, you may feel differently: · Too much back and forth with Leighann’s self-doubt & will they/won’t they · Too much use of “wicked” & “darlin’” · Grammatical errors & typos · Too long · Weird cliffhanger ending
I read this Kindle Unlimited book as part of the Romance me with Books book tour. All opinions are my own.
4.5 Stars. Wow what a book. This was the first book I’ve ready by this author and it was so so good. Once I started this book, I couldn’t put it down. I had to find out what was going to happen next.
I loved how relatable the heroine was. I adored Leighann and my heart broke for her. And gahh Evan. I loved how protective he was of Leighann and her daughter. I enjoyed the Passionflix references, being a Passionista myself I thought the references were cool.
I can’t wait to read more about Leighann and Evan, especially after that ending. I need answers!!
This was one of the author’s first books, which surprised me. It flowed very well. I am looking forward to reading more books from this author.
This was a cute, fun & sweet read. I loved the star-meets-normal girl trope and though it’s pretty insta-love, you can see them bonding and really falling hard. I’m not a huge fan of the yes/no, we can’t be together/I have to have you back and forth…but this was handled in a way you did understand it. I was quite taken aback by the very end. I can see where it’s going though. There is a slight cliffhanger & an HEA (for now 😉). There are some very touching moments though & loved the humor. Some sensitive topics with alcoholism and self harm, but nothing too graphic.
First and foremost, as a native Masshole, I HEARD and felt every word of this book so deeply. It was like talking to my friends and family, hearing our accents and words. It added an extra special layer to the story for me. And damn what a story it was!! I was completely hooked on Leighanne and Evan's love story. It was passionate, fun, sexy, and, at times, frustrating. I get why he did what he did, but it still pissed me off. Then that ending! Wtf!!!!!!
Boston Darlin’ is the first book in Brittany McMahan’s The Boston Series. It follows plus-size single mom Leighann and Hollywood heartthrob Evan as they try to navigate falling in love and the realities of Evan’s lifestyle.
If you go into this book comparing it to ‘real life’ you are going to find flaws. The timeline of Leighann and Evan’s relationship is very quick, she is not only a single mom, but the mother of a special needs child, and some of the supporting characters affect the plot in a way that feels very stereotyped. However, as a romantic fiction it tells a very sweet love story and I enjoyed it from start to finish.
I felt that the writing could have used a little more polish. There are moments where grammatical mistakes and the overuse of Boston vernacular can take you out of the story. Yet it’s still an endearing story, and a great escape from reality.
I really liked the main characters in this book. Leighann is sassy and snarky, and she has many insecurities. As someone who is plus sized, I felt everything she was feeling. There is a moment in the book where she has a conversation with her ex-husband and I felt like he could have easily been my own. The entire scenario and seeing her overcoming and standing up to his gaslighting and cruel use of her lacking self esteem was a moment that had me cheering for Leighann.
Evan is a perfectly written romantic leading man. He is sweet, funny, considerate, and sees the beauty of Leighann even if she doesn’t see it herself. Their chemistry sizzles and they are truly the centerpiece of this book. Their highs and lows will keep you engaged from start to finish.
Overall I gave this book a 4 out of 5. There are flaws, but the characters and sweetness of the plot more than make up for it. I would say it is a level 3 for spice, but nothing got overly graphic. If you like a sweet contemporary romance, I would give Boston Darlin’ a try.
Leighann’s life has been far from easy. Life has thrown curve ball after curve ball at her. She has moved through each as best she can. When she meets charming celebrity Evan she can not believe that he would really be interested in her. She is the opposite of his past girlfriends in looks and celebrity add in her daughter and that makes her think he is playing a trick on her. Evan is enchanted with Leighann from the start. He does all that he can to get to know her and be a part of her and her daughters life. It isn’t easy, Leighann is stubborn. When they finally agree to be together, outside forces conspire against them. Can they find their way to each other?
This was a great take on the celebrity and non celebrity troupe. Leighann is a strong single mother doing what she feels is best for her special needs child. She has heartache in her past, but she does not let it hold her back from what she wants. She uses the past as a learning experience so she does not get hurt the same. Her wariness towards Evan is expected, but also I think she holds on to stubborn ideas too long. I really liked how her daughter is portrayed. She is a very capable kid who is just a little different than others.
Evan is such a determined guy. He knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to grab on to it. He does make mistakes because he wants to protect he two ladies. His heart is always in their right place. He also makes up for his bone headed choices in big ways.
This book left off on an unexpected cliffhanger. It was a twist I didn’t see coming. I am so excited to see what comes next.
Leighann is a single mother to a special needs daughter who works at a lounge. Evan, a famous actor, sees her and asks her out. She fights against him, because she is trying to protect her daughter and doesn't understand why he's interested. Can he convince her to allow herself to fall?
I love these two characters. Leighann is on autopilot. She works so hard to take care of her daughter in every way she can, she hasn't had much time for herself. The author's portrayal of special needs parenting and some of the struggles a special needs child might go through is so eloquently written, it took my breath away. Being a special needs parent myself, I appreciated that more than you will ever know.
This love story is so beautiful and it brought tears to my eyes. I will definitely be reading more from this author! I highly recommend this book!
I love books that show real life within characters , whether it be a physical or mental disability. It makes the story more real and relatable
Lots of cute and romantic moments and of course ... spicy moments that are well written. It’s hard not to fall for the main male character , Evan is so lovable and as the author had Chris Evans in mind when writing ... it’s very clear he is my type 😏
The main female character is a strong woman who can look after herself and her daughter. She has some great one liners that just show she can handle herself just fine.
Great ending and I cannot wait for next instalment
The story was fun, cute and super sweet but it was just hard grabbing my attention and keeping it. I felt like I was forcing myself to finished it so I finally put it down. Also the Boston lingo was hard to keep up with even with me going back and looking it up lol
I truly enjoyed the wmc being plus and the showing the struggles of being a single mom especially with a disabled child 😭 The overall plot does have potential. I really wished I would’ve enjoyed it but hey you win some you some lol
But here the book wasn’t for ME but it might be for anyone else ! Give the book a try and see if you like it !
As a Georgia girl with a very close friend from Boston, I was very excited to know the Boston lingo in this book! I wanted to wack Evan sometimes and shake him for what he did but I loved how he made it right. Leighann was such a strong female lead and I loved her strength with all she had to deal with. I really can't wait for book 2!!
This was a sweet read. I loved the characters and the much needed plus-size representation. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the back and forth or the insta-love and there were times it was hard to get into the book, I will say though the cliffhanger while unexpected did leave me wanting more.
Insta-love ✔️ Single mom romance ✔️ Star meets normal girl trope ✔️ This was a very sweet and funny story, it reminded me of Hallmark movies. Kind of cheesy but you can't help but enjoy it. There's also plus size representation💜
I really enjoyed this book and thought it was written very well. I loved the characters and I like to see authors incorporate plus size characters in their books. I am a big fan of the single parent tropes also and this one did not disappoint. I can't wait to read book 2 in this series!!
So many fun and exciting tropes in this novel! Star crossed instant love, celebrity x single mom, and a forbidden love aspect made for a page turning read! If you are looking for a romance novel that will keep you hooked, this is for you.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love seeing a plus size woman be the main character in a romance novel, but I felt like there wasn’t really authenticity about her. It felt very rushed and the quick back and forth was more annoying than anything.
This was such a cute sweet love story! I love the addition of the kids in the sorry and how good Evan was whit them! I hate giving anything away in my reviews! I ready this is one evening it was a great book and I loved learning all the Boston Slang!!
I love that this featured a plus size MFC cause those are rare but getting more popular. Also that she is a single mother, that right there had me hooked.
3.5 Basic plot but still a fun read with a slightly different take on the small town/celebrity troupe. The daughter of the FMC in this was adorable and so sweet. Love that she represents a different criteria for kids in books with her having a learning disability but still being a kid in everyway that counts it was nice to see the good with that. Overall it was a fun quick read, even though it ends on a cliffhanger with no news on if the next one will be out.
⭐️: 4 🌶️: 6 What a ride Leighann and Evan had. And it’s not over yet! I loved reading about these two falling in love. Leighann is a tough chick and Evan just couldn’t help but fall for her. The Boston slang was a learning curve for me but it was easy enough to follow. And i swear Leighann went back and forth with her feelings like a ping pong ball but overall this was a sweet story. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
Review: 3/5🌟 At first I was questioning whether I will like this book or not ,but I truly enjoy reading it. Leighann & Evan are like any couple or relationship that had their moments but you learn from them. You get to see the good, the ugly and bad from the beginning to then end. I am a sucker for dual POV’s and this book being a dual pov book this made it even better. Also Leighann’s daughter is just the cutest & I love her! But the ending of this book has me want more. I am exited to see where Brittany McMahan take this series in the next book! There are a few trigger warnings you should be aware about before reading this book.
