In the small mountain town of Piney Grove, Miles Carter’s dreams of Olympic gold are dashed when his entire world comes tumbling down. He has settled comfortably into a life of monotonous routine managing the family sporting goods store, until he’s forced to confront the secret he’s kept buried so long.
Meanwhile in Los Angeles, Penelope Collins struggles to make it as a pastry chef with no support from her overly controlling fiance. When her zany Nana Mabel takes a fall, Penny finds herself back in Piney Grove running her cafe. What was supposed to be a few weeks soon becomes an opportunity of a lifetime, and Penny must choose: the big city career she’s always pictured or the quaint hometown she thought she’d outgrown.
The last thing Miles and Penny are looking for is love, but they can’t deny the strength of their connection. When the dangers of the mountains threaten to repeat history, Miles is faced with the past he can’t seem to escape, and he isn’t the only one in need of rescue.
Rescue is a standalone romance from the Carter Brothers series. It’s packed with steamy encounters, sweet romance, and a Happily Ever After that will leave you smiling. No cheating or cliffhangers!
More like 3.49 (because rounding rules would make 3.5 round up to 4.0). I liked this first in the series by Lois Autry. It has all the charm of a small town romance with a quirky grandma, amazing best friends, and some light angst. I liked the adorability of Miles and Penelope from their first re-meeting after years apart. The book moves along at a pretty good pace being easy to read, though it does mean things get a little glossed over at times. Like rather than pause and break down an event, the story kept moving and made it seem like the author wanted to include events x, y, and z rather than deleting them if they didn't actually fit with the flow of the story. The book has a nicely sweet romance and some steamy scenes. It is a stand-alone and written in dual POV first person. It also leads up to the next book with one of brothers.
Outstanding new author. The Carter brothers are all yummy. Good story with some steamy parts, but just enough to keep it lively. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
Romance trope: contemporary Series: The Carter Brothers Length: 281 pages
Plot: Penny has just broken up with her fiance and come back home to help her grandmother run her cafe. She doesn't know if she's going to stay yet, but there is someone in town who is voting for yes: Miles Carter. She knows Miles, vaguely, from when she was young, but he has some trauma to overcome after losing his girlfriend in a terrible accident. He does know one thing though: he'll make it completely clear to Penny just how much he wants her in his life.
Commentary: I found that there was a lot more telling than showing - so much exposition! I don't mind a little, but it was really the bulk of the book here. It made it a little boring, like I was reading a recap of things people said instead of seeing the actual conversation. There was a lot left out - most of the aftermath of his accident, for one. What actually happened to him? What was his recovery like? What happened in place of his Olympic dreams (I know he's running the business now, but how did that come about?)? What was he like that everyone just left himalone and didn't force him to deal with his issues? Does he even have any issues (because it was difficult to tell)? Why did Penny leave town in the first place? What was her dream? The most conflict we got was the little misunderstanding with the kiss, and that was really the only spark of plot in the book. It wasn't bad, it was just a little plodding and could have been more.
This was an instant attraction, slow burn romance. Both Miles and Penelope had some major baggage to get over in order to move forward together. Miles is still haunted by an accident that took the life of his girlfriend when they were in college. Penelope has moved home to help her Nana with her cafe while she recovers from hip surgery. She had just gotten out of a toxic relationship and didn’t think she was ready for a new relationship. Miles and Penelope meet and have an instant attraction they don’t understand. They can’t stay away from each other, as much as they don’t think they’re ready for a relationship, fate seems to have other ideas. As Miles learns to move on from his past and Penelope realizes that not all relationships will ask her to sacrifice her dreams, they realize they’re falling for each other.
This was an heartwarming, small town romance that was a great start to the Carter Brothers series. There was humor, romance, and a storyline about overcoming grief. I loved that there was a little foreshadowing for the other brothers’ books, especially the epilogue told from Bryant’s point of view.
This story is good for a quick low angst enjoyment. There are angsty scenarios but they are written in a way that doesn’t pull too deeply, maybe because we don’t experience any of the drama and trauma in real time. Personally, I didn’t feel the truth that he was over what happened with his GF when he was “thinking about what our life would have been like” at nearly the end of the story. It hits different when the character has a revelation that things wouldn’t have worked out in the long run when they think on the past but Miles didn’t have that. He truly would have had a wonderful life with her (and the surprise he wasn’t aware of until later) had the tragedy not happened. That makes me cringe a bit at whether he truly can put it behind him and have Penelope be the true love of his life.
Has a bit of everything. Heart break, slowly connecting angst and HEA. YOU'LL LOVE IT!
Loved it. Wish we would of had more interaction with the brothers and the families but it was still amazing. The author did an amazing job on the characters and story telling and bring all the feels to it. I really loved Pen and Miles. I have a feeling that one of the twins Brody (a firefighter) there is a story there with Amy. Mason I'm really wanting to know his story. I love the quiet grumpy sexy Teddy bear types. But for now I'm going with the next brother one of the twins Bryant mister lady's man, playboy, and also a firefighter. Let's see what life brings him and does his dream come true.
Story 🌟🌟🌟🌟very good plot, not dragged out, good pacing. A little predictable but not in a bad way. I could have used a little more action or tension between the characters. Characters 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Main characters were likable and easy to get to know. Secondary characters were a good balance and added to the story. Spice 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I like it when an author introduces us to the characters and lets us and them get to know each other before they get spicy. This author did an excellent job with this. Overall an enjoyable read.
I think I picked this book up from a Facebook ad. What an unexpected pleasure! Characters felt authentic and conflict was organic and not easily resolved. I’m a little in love with the Carter brothers now, and I’m excited to move on to the next book in the series.
I really like the story line. I love that there is some actual time even if just a few weeks before they declare their love. My only issue with the book really is that it moves very quickly. We're skipping time frames without realizing how far we moved. I wish more time would have been spent developing the characters and town vs just trying to get to the end.

I’m a little over book series - seems like there’s no substance. Just drag it out; how many brothers can we make into more books. The description talked about missed chances as an Olympian - but that’s where it ended…no character development. Could’ve been a fun story but seems like it just needed to get written quick and then off to the next brother…Bummer.
I loved Penny & Miles story. Just the right amount of drama from Penny's ex, appropriate sexiness cause I'm glad the story unfolded before they jumped in bed together and some heart wrenching scenes when Miles spoke about how his ex died and Penny's accident. So glad I discovered this series and can't wait to read the other books.
I loved this story of Miles and Penelope. I cried for Miles and I felt the degradation that Penelope felt from her former fiance'e. Heartache, some anger and mother nature acting up. So glad they had their happily ever after. I would recommend this book. Thank you Lois Autry for a great book.
Oh my heart. This was such a sweet book. I loved it. Miles, bless his heart needed to move on from his tragic past. Penelope just needed to find a new life away from Spencer. Healing each other they have to fight their demons to make a go. Loved it.
I just wish it was longer....and sometimes the author put too much emphasis on the past and talking about the death of his last girlfriend. I want to see more of the moments in the present with Penelope
Penelope and Miles’ story is sweet. I liked seeing him move forward after the accident. It did take me a little while to get into the story. At first I didn’t feel like they had good chemistry. Glad I kept reading.
I think this is my first book by this author, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has a little bit of everything with a Wonderful HEA. I'm looking forward to reading the next Carter brother book.
A solid read. I give it a 3⭐️ just because I think a lot was missing. There was a lot of internal dialogue and not enough conversations for me. Otherwise, it was a solid read and I will check out the next in series as well.
Yes! From the woman standing up and fighting for herself and her dreams to the man fighting a mountain of guilt this book is full of warmth and forgiveness.
I enjoyed book 1 in this series watching Miles and Penelope find their HEA. I’ll looking forward to book 2 in this series and will recommend it to everyone.
Penny and Miles are great. Penny returns to her hometown after her Nana get's hurt and needs to help run her coffee shop. Nana Mabel is the best. I love her crude sense of humor. Miles' backstory is heartbreaking, and so was the healing journey he went on. The extra stab in the heart he revealed toward the end??? Ugh! There were tears. The Carter family is fun and I am looking forward to reading about the other brothers
This is my first book by this author & I enjoyed this small town, second chance romance. There wasn't anything overdone in this book, which was pleasantly unexpected. The main characters, along with the side characters were all well written.
I liked the way the story flowed. Miles & Penelope's relationship was well developed, and it kept me interested from beginning to end.
My heart broke for all that Miles went through & all that he carried for so many years. He deserved happiness, and Penelope seemed to be the perfect girl for him.
Great book, with great writing. I will definitely be recommending this book.
I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
Seemingly surprised by her talents, she is just putting the finishing touches on one of those frozen whipped coffee concoctions when she turns to me. “Hi,” she says in a casual voice, “what can I get you this morning?” She grabs the can of homemade whipped cream off the counter behind her, clearly comfortable multitasking. “I’d like a large Bold and Busty Bean Flicker,” I say just as she’s tipping the can of whipped cream into the cup. She startles at the drink name and presses a little too hard on the nozzle of the can. Whipped cream sprays out in front of her, covering me, the counter, and the floor in sweet, whipped milk.
