With their kingdom in ruins, Dorian and Nyssari Eaglefyre must make a choice.
Remain bound to the kingdom and people that betrayed their family and live their lives in silence, or run and be declared traitors of the realm.
Choosing exile, they'll leave their crowns behind and travel south to fulfill the promises they made to Haerland's true High King and Queen: protect Haerland from the strangers invading their shores.
To do this, they'll have to go their separate ways. Dorian to the Blackhand Mountains, where he must secure aid and shelter from the Blackhands for the war. Nyssa to the Umber, where she must attempt to gather the help of the Honest people and then travel to negotiate peace with the foreign King.
Nyssa must choose to follow her heart or fulfill her duty, for if she cannot, she runs the risk of not only never securing an alliance from the Honest, but also ruining the trust they have in their Commander.
Dorian must face trial in the Blackhand town of Dahrkenhill. Despite their High Elder being a friend, the remainder of the people believes him to be a traitor and the reason for the fall of their King. He must prove his innocence to secure the aid the Blackhands had once promised them.
But Haerland continues to hide secrets. And the cursed race they'd thought they'd defeated has a darker plan for them all.
I would like to thank the author for giving me the honour of an e-arc I’m beyond grateful for this.
Oh my god what a book.. What. A. Book!! I loved every bit of this book from start to finish. This is one rollercoaster of an emotional journey for both the reader and the characters and I couldn’t have asked for anything better. I laughed, cried, smiled, teared up, panted, got hot and sometimes all within the same chapter. This is one phenomenal book and I can’t say enough amazing words for it. This series and these characters have my heart and they aren’t giving it back.. and I’m beyond fine with that.
Let’s start with the twins. The individual journeys Nyssa and Dorian go on is unbelievable and broke my heart so many times but also had me laughing and melting too. I loved watching them turn into the people they’ve become and seeing the true rulers they’re meant to be begin to shine through and watching as people chose to follow them. I love these two, they are beyond amazing. Nyssa being the incredible badass Queen she is and Dorian being the cheeky, unbelievably adorable kick ass King he is. Their wit and banter together and with the people closest to them had me big smiling so much.
Nadir… fuck me Nadir, where to start with this phenomenal, gorgeous, immortal creature. He is EVERYTHING!! I love him so much and the way he is with Nyssa has my heart like *good ow* he loves her and would protect her with his life but he also gives her her space and let’s her be the women she’s turning into with nothing but pride and support coming from him. Ughhhh I love this man. He’s another Cinnamon roll and I’m so glad we got to see more of him.
We got to meet a new character Reverie Asherdoe, the white haired, purple eyed dreamer. God she’s amazing too, we got a fair bit on her but I can’t wait for more and hers, Dorian’s and Corbin’s relationship is phenomenal and I need more of this too.
We get more of Hagen, Lex and Bala too with a few introductions of other characters one such as Katla and I can’t wait for more characters. And the creatures too, ugh the creatures.
The smut in this book is ughhhhhhh!!! So delectable, omg had me squirming and panting in places. Jack does so well with her smut and it’s perfection every time. All’s I’ll say is bubbles.. FUCKING BUBBLES!!!!
Jack Whitney is a Queen and I bow before this woman. Her work is phenomenal and quickly became a fast all time favourite of mine. I can’t wait to see where Jack takes this series and where her characters take her. Absolutely love this book just as much as the first book and the stories and characters will be in my heart evermore.
I would like to thank the author for providing me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I need book 3! What a journey Flames of Promise has been, though it took me a while to get through I loved this book and returning to Haerland to explore more of the world. Seeing how the characters dealt with the events of book one and so much more.
The writing was much stronger than Dead Moons Rising and I loved seeing that improvement from Whitney, I got lost in the pages this time around and was invested in the story until the end. Dorian and Nyssa's character development was amazing, it had me smiling multiple times throughout the book as I rooted for them. The new characters were amazing and I loved them. Flames of Promise definitely ruined my sleep schedule on more than one occasion.
With this book I needed a whole box of tissues, I cried 6 times... 6! It takes a lot to get me to cry at a book, but I sympathised with both Dorian and Nyssa in their grief to the point it reminded me of when I was dealing with that.
My only negative was the super long chapters, but this is a personal preference of mine. Another negative was that a some points the pace slowed right down, it quickly picked back up so I can't complain too much.
I waited months for this book and then was nervous to start it because well if you read book 1 you know ok...
So, this book was amazing and it was hard to do anything other than read it, and she is THICK and I love her for it.
So we basically start off right at the end or really in the midst of the end of book one. Which was a gut punch and made the beginning heavy, but I get why the author had to hurt like that from the start. We start off with the POV's of Nyssa and Dorian and we follow them throughout their journey in this new world they find themselves starting in. Their journey of growth and development is astounding honestly. The way they process their grief over all that they have lost both together and separately is amazing.
I absolutely LOVE Nyssa and Dorian! I loved each of their journeys that they have separately and then theirs together. Nyssa for me grew the most in this book. I feel like she really came into her own as a FMC. She forced her way to have a seat at the table and showed that you don't have to be the biggest, the loudest, or the most intimidating person in the room to be heard. I love how brave and stubborn she is. I cannot wait to see what it to come with her in the next books. Dorian....I mean I love him too. He really grows up in this book, a lot. He becomes the man and leader that both his sister Aydra and Draven always knew he was. Just like with Nyssa, I cannot wait to see who Dorian really becomes as this saga continues.
I cannot leave out of cast of amazing supporting characters. Lex....I LOVE YOU LEX! Everyone needs a friend like Lex in their lives. Bala....I would support you any time, Venari King. And Nadir, I adore Nadir. I cannot say more about him without giving things away.
I think Jack Whitney just became an auto buy author for me...
Oh me oh my, this book was utterly amazing! As a die hard fan of the first book, I wasn't sure how to feel about reading the second one but I wanted to stick with the series because the world that Jack created and the characters that inhabit this magical realm are to die for. One eARC later and I've absolutely fallen in love with the world and characters all over again.
In the second book we follow Nyssa and Dorian, who are just super awesome characters with so much life and personality you can't help but fall hardcore in love with them. I mean, let's talk about Dorian for a second y'all - what a freaking dream boat! Everything he is and does is just mouthwateringly sexy! And Nyssa, a power in her own right, another badass character that you can't help but fall in love with.
The new characters introduced in FoP add so much life to this book, it's hard to not fall in love with every single person you encounter while reading. Not to be dramatic, but I would die for these characters. Absolutely LOVE them!
If you loved the first book as much as me, picking up the second one is SO WORTH IT. Fall back in love with the world and more in love with Dorian, Nyssa and all the other characters!
Flames of Promise by Jack Whitney (ARC) book 2 in The Honest Scrolls series ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Spoiler-free review: Wow, where do I even begin?! I read Dead Moons Rising in March this year and it absolutely captivated me. I fell in love with the characters and the world that Jack Whitney created. I knew book 2 would be good based on Jack’s aesthetic reels and little snippets that she shared on Instagram, but y’all Flames of Promise exceeded any and all expectations I had! I did not realize how attached I was to these characters and their stories until I was reading. Dorian and Nyssa are two of the best main characters I’ve ever read. Their stories are moving, compelling, and relatable. There are struggles, triumphs, heartache, adventure, and spicy romance- everything I want in an adult fantasy novel. I laughed, I cried, and I held my breath while reading. This book, like the whole series, is very inclusive of people from all walks of life and backgrounds. There is a page of trigger warnings at the front of the book which I appreciated. This is definitely Adult High Fantasy 18+ for sure. Thank you Jack Whitney for creating a character that I could relate to so much, Nyssa! Her journey was so special for me. This book was beautifully well written and I could not put it down! If you like spicy romance, adventure, fantasy, and a story you won’t be able to stop reading, Read Dead Moons Rising and preorder Flames of Promise (October 2021).
This is only Jack Whitney’s second book, and she just became an auto-buy author for me. Her first book, Dead Moons Rising, was amazing, but had a few grammatical errors and whatnot. This book simply blew that book out of the water. It was that good.
Flames of Promise picks up immediately after the ending of Dead Moons Rising. Well, actually, it begins just before the end, but from Dorian and Nyssa’s point of view. So we have to relive that agonizing ending all over again, and yeahhhh, it ripped my heart out once again. The twins end up being separated for most of the book, and this allows for some of the most amazing character development I have read in a long time.
I’m not going to spoil anything, but do yourself a favor and start reading this series.
Just as a heads up, there is A LOT of sex in these books. So much smutty goodness. This race is very open with their sexuality, and there is m/f, m/m, and f/f.
Y’all. I thought I loved book one. I thought there was No way I’d love book 2 as much. I was WRONG. Flames of promise was INCREDIBLE and I need book 3 like yesterday. If you enjoy: Enemies to lovers Royalty All the spice Creative Magic systems Unique worlds Swoon - worthy characters Dark Fantasy Amazing banter Empowering characters Smutty reads
✨ Than you will NOT be disappointed in 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘀 series! Book 1 AND BOOK 2 available on Kindle Unlimited NOW!
"You and me against the world Brother. From now until the end".
This book destroyed me all over again during the first 4% just after I'd partially recovered from the first book, I cried and laughed throughout Flames of Promise, just as I did the Dead Moons Rising 💜
I honest to God needed to keep notes with this book or I honestly wouldn't have been able to keep up and I feel like I would have ended up missing important information 😕
Character development seemed to be the main focus of this book, with the plot seeming to become a little bit secondary. Nyssa has gone from the Princess full of self doubt and insecurities to a powerful Queen in her own right who is sure of herself and her powers. Nadir has been her perfect counterpart being there for Nyssa when she needed it and also when she didn't, he has challenged and supported her all the way through this book in the most perfect way imaginable 💜
Dorian is a total badass who started as a heartbroken cocky Prince full of grief and became a King in his own right, he's still cocky but has also humbled himself with the support of his friends. The introduction of Reverie has been perfectly executed she balances out Corbin and Dorian perfectly between all the masculinity and shutting Dorian down several times she is a total badass who will put them both in their place.
The spice of this book is just... wow, off the charts and all I can say is bubbles.
Found family is everything. Family isn't always about sharing blood or the bond or brother and sister, it who you choose to be a family through trust and love 💜

Flames of Promise by Jack Whitney has become my new favorite book in the series and it's not just because there is a character dedicated to me (though that is a bonus). If you like her first book, Dead Moons Rising but wanted a little bit more plot and character development then you will love this book. This book still has the [erfect amount of romance and sex, of course, but the journey that the characters take and the differences in their development from the beginning of the book to the end is perfect. When I first read Dead Moons Rising, I loved Dorian and was still on the fence about Nyssa, but after reading Flames of Promise and learning more about Nysa and her story, she has become my girl!! I love her so much. I also just fell more in love with Dorian while reading this book. This book has way more action, plot twists, and gut-wrenching scenes that will keep you on your toes guessing what happens next. Any dark fantasy lover will love this book and if you haven't preordered this book yet, now is the time to do so.
On a side note, I am so proud of Jack and all that she has accomplished within this last year. I know how stressful it has been and I know there has been a lot of setbacks, but it's finally here. We are only a few days away from release. I am so excited for everyone to read this and I hope everyone falls in love with these characters and become just as big a fan of Jacks as I am!
I was sent an ARC of this by @jack.whitney.writer after absolutely loving Dead Moons Rising.
This book had everything for me; an amazingly well thought out magic system, war, fighting, romance, evil, found families, and everything else you could possibly want in an adult fantasy book.
The way Nyssa and Dorian expanded into their characters was perfect! Everytime I think something comes together throughout the plot, something else happens that opens up an entirely new plot so that you are never sure what is about to happen or what to expect.
It is difficult for me to even put into words how much I reccomend these books and I just cannot wait until The Gathering for a continuation of this plot because I dont want to leave this world anytime soon!
Flames of Promise releases on October 6th and Dead Moons Rising is currently on Kindle Unlimited ✨
I need to write you an essay on why I love this so much
But I can't because I'd be giving too much away.
What I will say is wow. Just wow.
If you're here I'm assuming you've read Dead Moons Rising. If you're anything like me you're feeling a bit emotional and not sure you can put yourself through book 2. It took me over a month to pick this one up because the ending of book 1 had floored me, and I wish I hadn't waited that long. I'm not sure I'll ever forgive book 1 but this one was like pouring vodka on the wound, then putting a nice clean bandage on and taking an ibuprofen.
I loved this book, I cried so many times, was left on edge because after book 1 how could I trust that anything would be ok, and broke my heart for Nyssa and Dorien.
This is the part before the war, its the gathering of information, making allies, working out who the enemies are and setting you up for what presumably will be the last book.
But it is so much more. It's a very character driven book, the growth and journey of the two younger siblings. The grief that Dorien and Nyssa are carrying is heartbreaking, I could physically feel it in my gut. It made me like the characters more to not have them bounce back and be the hero, and to have them properly earn their place.
I really liked the juxtaposition of their journeys, Dorien's struggle to live up to everyone's expectations against Nyssa's battle to break free of them whilst both dealing with the same trauma and loss. And both of them find it really hard and make mistakes or the best decisions they can at the time, things which might come back to haunt them - I liked that they weren't always doing the right thing.
I don't usually like it when characters are separated for lengthy periods of time, but in this instance because the two main characters are siblings not love interests it worked really well and allowed you to get to know other characters better as the focus was on them interacting with new people not one another.
This book was stressful, particularly Nyssa's story. I think think the author has set it up in such a way that you know even main characters aren't safe from harm, that it really leaves you on the edge of your seat. The beauty of that being that when things do go right it's all the sweeter for it.
There is a lot of spice in this book. A lot. You may think that's a + or a - depending on your tastes. For me, I think if it was less character driven that it may have slowed things down, but because it was always done in the context of where the character was in their head at that point I felt it enhanced rather than detracted from anything.
I need to go and sit in a dark room and feel all my feelings now.
I fell in love with the world that the Honest Scrolls is set in from Dead Moons Rising and was eager to jump into Flames of Promise! I loved so many things from DMR - getting to know Haerland, Aydra and Draven's relationship, the unpredictable storyline, and the introduction of many interesting characters. FOP did a great job with diving back into Haerland and even takes it further by the shift in POV to Dorian/Nyssa and the introduction of new characters. We were also able to explore more of Haerland's lands that we had yet to see in DMR.
FOP takes place during the ending events of DMR and completely pulled me back within the first page of the book. I felt like I was hit with a ton of bricks from just the opening, throwing me back to all the emotions I felt at the end of DMR. This book is written from Dorian/Nyssa's POV and does an incredible job of connecting the reader to their character though their emotional journey. Even though I didn't relate as closely to Dorian/Nyssa as I did with Aydra/Draven, I grew to really love them and root for their development throughout the story.
Another thing I loved was how the storyline seamlessly continued while our focus was on the personal growth of our MCs. The beginning of the book was a little slower but gradually picked up by the mid way point and even became suspenseful towards the end. There were even a few unpredictable developments from the plot that I enjoyed being surprised by. Most of all, I was very impressed with how much Nyssa and Dorian grew by the end of FOP.
This book was also great with the steamy scenes! Despite all that was going on for both Nyssa and Dorian, I liked how the spice was integrated into the story and even fit into their personal growth journeys.
If you enjoyed DMR and miss everything about Haerland, I would definitely recommend giving FOP a shot! I might not have been able to connect as closely with Nyssa/Dorian as I did with Aydra/Draven, but I still enjoyed reading about them and definitely wanted to know how this story would end. We are still left with a lot to be answered and more plot to be developed by the end of FOP but I know that this series will continue and has lots of potential to become addictive.
This book is an emotional rollercoaster. Every single character is struggling through grief from page one, and the author starts us back at the end of Dead Moons Rising (book 1) and puts us through THAT emotional wrecking ball again, so the reader also starts grieving again too. Jack literally had me tearing up only SEVEN pages in, and then full on crying by page 43. The flashbacks were beautiful and I loved getting little new snippets of Aydra and Draven, and its made me so much more frustrated (and excited) at the teasing we get later in the book.
I honestly never expected to love Nyssa and Dorian as much as I loved Aydra and Draven, but Jack did such a perfect job I fell right in love immediately. Nyssa and Dorian both got their crowns, but not the ones we expected, and they worked their asses off - they deserve every minute of happiness.
This book did not go in the direction I expected, we focused on the invasion of Man, and didn’t really get to Raif until the very end(kind of). It could be a bit slow in some parts, but honestly I wouldn’t sacrifice a single page, because even when there’s no -action- we are delving deep into the characters emotional journey, and not a single moment lacks meaning. I LOVED Dead Moons Rising, and reading Flames of Promise I saw so much growth from Jack and can’t wait to see what she comes up with next. Jack did a fantastic job of giving the characters a strong emotional journey without losing any of the plot. This book did a lot of world building that I’m guessing will set up the next book well.
The spice was just perfect. I mean…. bubbles… is all I have to say. Nyssa’s epic romance with Nadir really helps balance the semi-slow burn and emotional turmoil we get on Dorian’s half. I did feel a little robbed of one scene in particular, but hopefully once Dorian figures his shit out we’ll get that one in the next book ;)
Colour me impressed. JW has done it again and delivered on another wonderfully powerful and immersive book full of angst and strength and development.
SPOILERS.
I'd like to start by thanking the author for gifting me an earc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Ok, starting with my issue (which is very small). The plot lacked a little luster for me. It was very character driven (which i love because damn was there development)- the plot didn't seem to move as much, and almost came to a standstill to better digest and control character development. Aside from finding out that Man has a huge settlement and the king is coming and that Infi have fully infiltrated a town, not much happened in regards to the surrounding plot. However everything else was beautiful.
My favourite parts: • Nyssa becoming a queen in her own right • Dorian falling in love and proving himself as King in his own right • Corbin is such a darling 🥺 • Nadir being the softest and most delicious man. • Reverie being so fricking badass. I'm loving her character development atm and I'd love to see more of it. • Ofc Bala and Lex are superior. I want more of them please. • Aydra and Draven in the stars • Bala proving herself to be the Venaria king - when they all bowed to the three of them 😭😭 • The Sun coming to Nyssa which I still find very interesting • The water dragon and all of the creatures heeding Nyssa's call • The smut 👀🥵🥵🥵 bubbles... •Hagen ofc 🤤
The torture at times seemed unnecessary and a little extreme (there seemed to be no concrete reason for the lady being a utter b*tch) but it strengthened Nyssa's resolve and tenacity as well as allowing her to face all of her fears and condemn those who try to tear her down. It was quite emotional really, heart wrenching, especially in her moments with Nadir. I thought the flashbacks were a lovely touch, as though Aydra and Draven weren't really gone but lived well in the memories of those who loved them. Seeing a little more of Dorian and Draven's friendship unfold was nice to see as Dorian discovered more about himself as a fighter and a King. I thought his moments of clarity, especially with Hagen and Corbin helping him, were rather beautiful. Speaking of... there's something very special about throuples and I adore this one with my entire heart.
Honestly, I was very overwhelmed with this book. All the emotions came at once and I thought the engineering of it, particularly with the characters and their relationships, was very well executed. Now that Nyssa and Dorian have reunited, I can't wait to see what JW has in store for them - they are a force to be reckoned with and really, I don't think Man stand a chance against them. It was rather sublime to see both siblings come to terms with themselves and the loss of their family on their own. They needed that self discovery, and even though it was really sad that they'd spent so much time apart and hadn't witnessed these amazing stepping stones in their recovery (well, Dorian's, because Nyssa was just basically tortured), they are stronger now and are not so reliant on one another. They are strong in their own right and that was rather beautiful to witness. I can't wait for book 3 and see how well they all (Bala included) step into the shoes of Kings and Queen!
Jack is the type of Author who’s words have impact.
Every word and sentence is so well planned that you become glued to the pages.
Flames of Promise is the second book in the Honest Scrolls series and I knew that I had to give myself some rules. I didn’t want to read the whole book without talking a breath. I wanted to have time to process the emotions. Because believe me. They’re a rollercoaster.
The growth of Nyssa is the best character growth and progression I’ve ever read. You feel like you’re going through it as her not just with her. She is such a relatable character but also holds the air of fantasy.
Dorian is cool and badass. His scars run deeper and aren’t visible on the surface.
Seeing the contrast of the same heartache dealt in different ways was so well done!
There’s so much to say about this book. I could go on forever.
The whole world Jack had built is absolutely stunning and so well thought out. The characters are so real that my heart literally skips when a plan goes awry.
The spice in this book is also on point! 5/5🌶 I love that it’s not just spice thrown into random spots in the book. Each moment has a purpose or a perfect placement that it flows with the storyline.
✅high fantasy ✅amazing characters ✅edge of your seat story ✅🔥🌶 ✅fast paced
Like I said I could go on and on about this book and I haven’t even scratched the surface.
I am so proud of Jack for following her dream and bringing this story to life. This series is top tier fantasy reading.
If you haven’t read The Honest Scrolls series yet, what are you even doing??
Flames of promise is available for preorder now. Release date is October 6th 2021. 🔥🔥🔥 “Watch me, then” 🔥🔥🔥
I have cut out a lot of my Nyssa love for this review 😂😂
I received and arc for my honest review of this book.
I started this book after being completely devastated about Aydra and Draven ending in Dark moon rising. I didn't really connect with Nyssari or Dorian in the last book but I was curious about them. I really enjoyed the sibling connection and how close they are to each other. Dorian and Nyssari relationship is so nice compared to Aydra relationship with her brother Raif.
This story starts with Dorian and Nyssari exiled from their kingdom. They choose to become traitors and go off south into other parts of the realm to keep their promises to the true High King and Queen. The other kingdoms do not trust them and look down or blame them for the events that have occurred.
Due to their distain and distrust they must separate to ensure their survival and to complete their promises. Dorian to the Blackhand Mountains and Nyssa to the Umber. They both have a lot to prove and overcome to become the leaders they are destined to become. I didn't realize how much I would enjoy seeing Nyssa and Nadir become close. I also really enjoyed seeing Dorian grow as well. All the characters are great and I really enjoyed meeting new characters and seeing others find love and growth as well. I definitely recommend this book and can't wait for more books from this author. She does a great job with building her worlds and characters.
Be sure to read the trigger warnings ⚠️ for this book
Okie dokes, so all in all, I really enjoyed this book. Jack Whitney created an amazing, immersive fantasy realm unlike any other I have ever read. Book One broke me in so many ways, but Book Two built me back up. I love Nyssa and Dorian's relationship. Twins who would do anything to protect one another. Just how siblings should act. While this book may not be as action-packed as the first book it instead goes through the emotional turmoil and growth of the twins on their separate journeys. I can not get enough of Nyssa and Nadir. They're such an adorable couple. They're such hopeless romantics. Nadir trusts Nyssa wholeheartedly to do what she needs to do, even if it pains his heart to do so. It also gave me the warm and fuzzies that he allowed her time and space to heal and find herself after the trauma she endured. I always get excited when authors incorporate LGBTQIA couples into their books. So, boy, was I ecstatic to see Dorian in a budding poly relationship with Corbin and Rev. It hasn't quite taken off yet, but they're so cute together.
I do have a few cons that contain spoilers. I should note, however, that these do not influence the story overall. These are simply my personal opinions.
I feel as though the part where Dorian, Corbin, and Rev go to the Bryn was glossed over a bit. I had to question what emotions Dorian was going through when he received his Infi crown. I also wish there were a few chapters explaining what Rev went through with the Infi both in her childhood and in trying to get the scrolls. What was going through her head as Dorian made the deal? It's hard to believe that after everything she went through at the hands of the Infi that she would just be fine with the deal without question.
A 2.5 really. Overall I liked the story, but I did prefer the first one (though grammar is a huge improvement in FoP!). I do really like the concept of this world, it's different and original and imperfect.
One thing that drove me crazy and made me literally roll my eyes is the excessive use of the word "banter". We are told almost every page she bantered, he bantered, sexual banter. Some of it is not even banter! You could turn the amount of the word “banter” in this book into a drinking game. It's mentioned so much it makes me think they do not, in fact, have banter.
The author at times does not trust the reader to read between the lines and likes to make sure she points out everything just in case you might have missed it. It gets tiring to constantly be told things that are simply implied.
I do like that this series doesn't shy away from heavy themes mentioned in the TW. It's definitely adult, and it fits with the world they've created.
Flames of Promise is the aftermath of book 1. It's the grieving, the rage and the screaming. It's the "what the fux do we do now" moments. It's the lengths you didn't know you would go to to protect your family and the limits you find yourself stopping at. FoP is a rollercoaster of emotions including action, rage and desire. Both Dorian and Nyssa try to find and earn their true place in the world instead of demanding it through their birthright. They've chosen to leave their crowns behind and live as traitors to their own people and fight for what’s right and equal.
Things to know sex with one or more persons, public sex, grief, death, battle scenes, violence, abuse, drug abuse, torture, mental manipulation, and mentions of sexual assault, eating disorders, and suicide, dark high fantasy, LGBTQIA+ rep
After sobbing through the ending of the first book,I was reluctant to read this o e as how could you top the first one? And at 900 pages it seemed a daunting task. However, those 900 pages flew by in 3 short days and every single page was needed to flesh out the story of Nyssa and Dorian. The maturing that the two of them go through as well as their individual journey through grieving was well thought out and flowed well. Sometimes the flow of how the author switched between the two story lines was a bit clunky but that would be a very tiny flaw in this fabulous book. It is also so refreshing to see the strong sibling bond that they continue to have. Cannot wait for the next book!
Holy cow. I thought I loved the first book and I was devastated and angry at the author for killing off The literal main characters. When reading this book though it was absolutely necessary because this second book is just a whole different breed compadres the the first. The character building along with the works building go far more in depth and I fell in love with Nyssa and Dorian my heart is aching for more. The amount of spice in this book is delicious and I still want more. I appreciate how this world had such open fluid minds about pleasures and just the way each character interacted with each other made the book so fascinating to read. I am counting the days until there is a third book to this series!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The first book was so good. I was worried I wouldn’t like Nyssa and I was right. She wallows and cries that no one wants to treat her like a queen but she just hides out and does as she pleases, trains at her leisure. After the 5th hissy fit she throughs she gets kidnapped (like everyone was warning her about). Then she’s basically ready to die talking about how she has no heart and is ready to give in after a mere month as a captive. But as soon as she sees Nadir it’s a 180 about how she’s needs to be trusted and she can do this. Like what? That’s not where you were 1 chapter ago. I ended up DNFing at 95% I couldn’t do it any longer. All the banter is cringey, dull and boring.
This book is perfection and is now my favorite book of 2021 (and an all-time fave).
It picks up where DMR left off and instantly grips you back into the story. I love that we got to explore more of Haerland in this book, the world-building is spectacular as to be expected.
With the different POVs, I felt every single emotion while following Dorian and Nyssa on their journeys, you really get to know these characters so well that they feel like they’re friends, which is something I really love about Jack’s writing.
FOP is packed with adventure, growth, romance, and lots of spice, and it does it all so well. I can’t recommend this book enough.
Jack as always has outdone herself! Flames of Promise starts right where we left off in Dead Moons Rising.
I have to admit that through the first 10 chapters I couldn’t stop crying. We find our Promised Princess and Prince dealing with their grief and being thrown into a war. The growth that these two go through is INSANE and it keeps you completely immersed in the world of Haerland.
Just like with DMR I didn’t want to put it down, but didn’t want it to end either.
Jack I’m sorry if my reaction messages were a bit much at times, but I had to share my love. 💜
Can’t wait to see what the rest of the Honest Scrolls have in store for us!
I can't believe I finished!!! This book was everything I could ever ask for. Nyssa has now become my new favorite character of ALL TIME! She grew so much in this book. As did Dorian, with all his strength, power, and love. Reverie is a true warrior goddess that I can't wait to see more of. Nadir is my hopeless romantic book boyfriend forever! There are too many characters to fall in love with within this book. The story kept me at every chapter and page. I continue to love Jack Whitney's stories and she will now be an automatic buy for me whenever new books of hers come out. Can't wait for the Gathering novella and the next book in this series!!!
I originally wasn’t going to read the 2nd installment of this series, but when the author started dropping teasers on IG I knew I had to!
Honestly, I loved this more than the first book. Characters had much more depth and intrigue - especially Nyssa’s evolving relationships with Lex, Nadir and Honest people.
Not sure how I feel about Dorian yet. Three is a crowd and feel like his romance is headed for sure heartbreak for one.
Only looking forward to the third book to see Nyssa make them all crawl.
So… this book… is everything! The writing, the character development, the plot, the issues the characters deal with… and the spice!!!!! Everything is just *chef’s kiss*!!! I can’t wait to read what happens next in Haerland, what trouble Dorian will get into, and what Nyssa, that powerful FMC will accomplish!!! All the characters go through trauma and struggle with it but come back up so much stronger!! I am here for it!!!!! Jack, congrats on this amazing book!!! Now please hurry to give us the next one in the series!!!
One less star than the first book in this series from me because I felt there were a few stretches of this installment that just dragged on. However, Jack Whitney continues to deliver dynamic, well-rounded characters. I loved seeing so much more of Nyssa and Dorian in this book and their growth. Also, the contrast of their relationship to that of Aydra/Draven. I loved that we get to journey to other corners of Haerland here and learn more about some of the other races. This is still a stellar sequel and I can’t wait for the next!
The spicy in this series is the hottest stuff I've ever read! These characters love their partners and show it in the sexist ways possible! The other amazing side of this book is the politics in place Before a war breaks out. You want to be these characters by the end of the book. So strong and so brave! Highly recommend if you love feeling ALL the feels!
