When Meghan "Meg" Leisler's mother and sister die in a car crash, she has to leave her fast-paced life in New York City to head home to Lobelia Falls to help her father with the funeral arrangements. She ends up dealing with a lot more than just the deaths. In this paranormal cozy mystery, Meg and her trusty sidekick, Pugsley, set out to solve a crime spree in the small town.
I read thew whole book in a couple of hours. I found it to be a page turner and quite fun for a small adventure. I am glad that this book did not have a sappy romance that is rekindled in the small amount of time this book takes place.
However I felt Meg's emotions did not fit the current situation or more as if the story carried Meg rather than Meg leading the story.
I know for a fact that if my mother and sister, who I grew up with, have died I would be super upset and unconsolable; possibly even more upset/angry/confused to find that I did not know them as well as I thought, hiding the fact that they were witches.
Meg's reaction would probably fit more if she was estranged from her family, as in not talking to them at all, yet Meg was not necessarily estranged, she just moved away to set up her life elsewhere.
I say this from experience as I have moved to another country, I may not see my small family as much but I am not estranged would be super upset if any one of them died.
I do recommend reading this book for something fun, different and quick. There is not much witchcraft said about what the witches in this book can actually do but it's not cheesy with magic wands and floating sparkles or glowing auras.
Not your usual cozy witchy murder mystery, when she's called home after her mother and sister are killed in a car accident things are not as they seem. After her collapse in the city and inheriting her mother and sisters witchy powers things in her hometown spiral out of control. A break-in at her late sister's house lead to the discovery of a hidden document proving that the police chief is dirty her lawyer paid someone to take her bar exam and the funeral director is selling body parts. As if that's not enough it appears that her mom and sister were murdered, a great storyline brilliant characters, and a murder mystery that makes sense, recommend read, Baz.
There is really not much witchcraft in this book if you discount the talking dog. The first part of the story moves along pretty well, the second part is more abrupt, I was disappointed by how it played out. I liked Megan's and Lyssa's characters but found some aspects of Lyssa's to be disjointed. There were some grammatical errors which caused me to reread sentences to see if my mind was playing tricks on me, there were also times when descriptions of places changed e.g.,Meg's apartment in the city. Despite all of this, the book was readable and I finished it.
Picked this up on a whim, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The main character, Meghan, is just not having a good day/week. Firstly, she has to deal with the sudden deaths of her mother and sister, and then she discovers that they were hiding something from her... something that is about to turn her life upside down.
A fun, fast paced cosy (despite the tragic circumstances), that I just couldn't put down. I binged this in one session - it's short - and immediately picked up the first book in the series as I just needed to know what happened to Meghan and Mr. Pugsley next. A great book if you want something quick and entertaining to read while on the go, or need so fill time.
When tragedy strikes, a woman discovers a surprising family heritage.
The chance to learn more about her town, her family and herself promises to be pretty intense and drama and action packed.
Town and witchy secrets, some powerful family and friends, and a very bossy pug mentor and guide make for insightful, exciting and often amusing reading.
I really enjoyed visiting Lobelia Falls, and am looking forward to the extended stay there - especially with pug and butt kicking cousin and friends on board.
So many secrets which definitely makes you wonder why the sister was logging...tracking...recording? Wonder if she put together the loss of her sister and Mother coincided with her passing out? I do want to give kudos to a male author including a possible romantic interest .
J.J.Justice has placed an interesting new series before you 🤔 a tale of intrigue, compassion, corruption, death and new beginnings. A well written story of a womans fall into an unexpected witchy world of magical wonder that makes you want see where it will all lead. Acquire " Witch in the City " so you yourself can enjoy it as much as I have 🙂.Kat
Nice cozy mystery to get you hooked on the town and Pugsley Of course. Great entertaining, fantastic characters that a charmingly flawed but somehow are perfect in the storyline.
Enjoyable story although it did need an editor. It did bring up for me a thought about how we face grief. As a counsellor, Meghan understands grief but the character shows very little. As a private griever myself, I would still expect a flood of tears or three when alone.
