How do you persevere when you have no more will to fight?
Jennifer and Chad Taylor had dreamed of opening a coffee and cocoa shop since before they said, “I do.” When Chad is sent to prison for murder despite claiming innocence, that dream—along with their family—is shattered.
After years of fighting for Chad’s release, Jennifer finally breaks free from her shame, anger, and hopelessness, and forges ahead with the dream the two of them once shared. With the help of their college-aged twins, she begins to move forward.
Without Chad.
When their lawyer arrives with news of evidence that may prove Chad’s innocence, a strange mixture of emotions overtakes her. Does she want Chad to return home? He isn’t the same man he once was, and she certainly isn’t the same woman. She’s worked hard to piece the remnants of their family back together, and his coming home could fracture the family once again.
It all comes down to one question. She loves her husband enough to fight for his release from prison, but does she love him enough to fight for their marriage?
Brenda S. Anderson writes authentic and gritty life-affirming fiction that shows God at work in people’s messy lives. She is a founding member of the award-winning, nontraditional publishing company, The Mosaic Collection. When not writing, she enjoys live sports and theater, walking along the shores of Lake Superior, and sharing hot cocoa with friends and family. She lives near Minneapolis with her newly retired husband and their twin mischievous kitties, Mauer and Morneau.
Brenda Anderson delivers another heartfelt, thought-provoking family drama steeped with faith and the hope that comes from welcoming second chances. And this time she's teamed up with her barista extraordinaire daughter to create the kind of coffee/chocolate shop I want in my neighbourhood!
Absolutely loved that angle of the story and the way the shop becomes an important part of the community. There's all kinds of interesting parallels between it's growth and the changing lives of the Taylor family. (This would make a great book club read 'cause there's so many important talking points -- you'd have no end of discussion material!)
And the way the authors deliberately centre Christ through it all -- touching the lives of characters who might be angry or rebellious or even not interested -- well, it's so moving and soul satisfying. They don't shy away from the tough questions or the raw emotions of very real lives gone awry but they also shine light into that darkness.
And what a premise! A loving couple's happily-ever-after preempted by a wrongful conviction! The backlash that has on the their family and friends and the stress of relentlessly fighting to have that conviction overturned. I don't want to give away any spoilers but the plot development, the unexpected twists, the deep characterization...well, it all makes for one compelling unputdownable read!
My thanks to the author for gifting me with a copy of this book.
This isn't the typical 'happily ever after' story where everything magically works out quickly. This story is closer to real life and for that reason it is a harder read. That being said, I completely loved it. There wasn't anything seemingly easy in this story. Jennifer and Chad aren't apart because they chose it, but rather a mix of circumstances. She loves her husband, but with him so completely out of the picture, life has moved on and both of them have changed.
That truly happens in life when people 'grow apart' or 'are no longer the person you married'. In real life, people change and when you aren't right there with that person being involved in the change and changing with them, it can be super hard. Not to mention it wasn't just Jenn and Chad that this affected, they had kids. I love that the author tackled all of this and didn't sugarcoat any of it, but made it like real life. It truly is a touching story and it shows how prison affects both those inside and outside of the walls. it all
5/5
Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book via Celebrate Lit. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
A book worth reading! A sweet beginning to their love story to the harsh realities of life when he becomes falsely imprisoned. They must fight many battles along the way while he is in prison to adjusting to life when he is freed. I related to Jenn and her love for hot chocolate and distaste for coffee. How fun that she would end up owning a coffee/cocoa shop. The battles they faced and their faith in overcoming kept me turning pages. Highly recommend. Can't wait to read more from this author.
Someone mentioned that this author is good for Karen Kingsbury fans, and I think that might be about right - without the KK quirks that make her books sound too much alike. There was a definite faith element that went alongside the pretty realistically-handled, difficult life situation.
OH MY! How do I find the words to review an outstanding, well written book dealing with tough realities of life? “Yet I love how God has taken our broken pieces and bonded them together into his breathtaking mosaic. We are broken together, and that’s something beautiful.” This story touched my heart, a story of second chances, full of mercy, grace, forgiveness, and love. How often do we feel or think that God has not heard our prayers, only to find out that yes, He has answered them? Broken Together was not an easy read, the story was about a family who was broken by several things including a husband and dad who was in jail. The story did not end there, it followed the family through the ups and downs and eventual release. I love how the author tackled a tough subject filled with hope and grace. If I could give the book a 10 I would. I highly recommend Broken Together. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion. All opinions are my own.
Running a coffee and cocoa place is great but when problems arise, it’s difficult. The book shows you how real life is sometimes. Absolutely a worthwhile read.
This is not an easy book to read as it is about a couple (family) broken by many things including a husband in jail. I appreciated that this book didn't end at his release but travelled with them all through the major adjustments. This is not a sugar-coated story but it is real - which is one of the reasons I read this author's books. As always there is plenty of hope and demonstration of the difference that Jesus makes if we're willing to follow His ways - something we all struggle with.
Broken Together was a marvelous story and a difficult story all wrapped into one. It is hard-hitting and doesn't sugar-coat the difficulties that imprisonment causes - especially for believers - even when the prisoner is innocent. And, yet, despite the difficulties, hope shines through as Chad and Jenn cling tightly to the Savior. And when they falter, others are there to lift them up and point them back to Him.
I'll be honest. I love stories where Christians encounter seemingly insurmountable odds and God miraculously delivers them from them all. And where they handle their trials with grace and aplomb. But I am well aware that God doesn't always deliver us in that way. Sometimes He walks with us through the fire. And often, Christians falter when faced with difficulties and behave, well, in ways that are not like Christ.
Here is a compelling and realistic portrayal of what could happen when an innocent man, Chad, spends years in prison for a murder he didn't commit. And what happens to his family as they struggle to cope in a world suddenly hostile towards them! It is not graphic in any way. Still, Broken Together gives a vivid picture of the horrors faced by those in prison. The gangs. The beatings. The loss of hope. Due to the mere mentions of some of these things, I recommend it only for older readers.
While I often found myself close to tears, sometimes outraged at the injustice, sometimes brokenhearted over the grief Chad and Jenn experienced, I also found myself smiling on occasion at the sweetness of the kids and the kindness of the believers in the little town.
I first met Chad and Jenn in a sweet novella that is part of the Before Summer's End collection. While it is not required reading for fully enjoying Broken Together, it does give additional insight into the events that precede it.
I recommend Broken Together for adult readers able to face the darker things in this world and still prefer a clean read. Prepare to be challenged and grab a copy!
I was given a copy of this book. I was not required to give a favorable review nor was any money received for this review. All comments and opinions are my own.
Life can be quite messy and complicated but with God in the center also doable. I loved these flawed characters and how they reacted to different situations. Realistically I believe, even though I haven’t personally been in their shoes. The writing brought me into their lives and kept me feeling like I was really there. Sometimes we may react quickly and unkindly to a situation not knowing the background and why a person may act like they do. Jenn had been living without her husband for over eight years. Chad was in prison for a murder he didn’t commit. Jenn had been raising their two children, now teenagers, alone and trying her best to do what was right. Living with her judgmental mother had been difficult but her only choice financially. She and her children had been in a prison of their own, though not physically. When Chad is released early on time served they all must make hard adjustments. I liked reading a more true to real life story for a change and how the characters reacted and worked through each problem sometimes praying and sometimes not. How do they bring broken people back together, or do they? You’ll have to read to find out. I recommend this book! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through Celebrate Lit but was not required to write a review positive or otherwise.
I like to learn something in the books I read even of a fiction story. This story took that goal to a whole new level in that it personally impacted my life perspective, and the lenses through which o look at the world and for that 5 stars doesn’t seem enough.
“That was the way her life was defined, it seemed. Before prison, and during prison.” This quote is regarding Jenn, one of the protagonist for this story as she seeks to stand by her man after he is sent to prison for a crime he says he didn’t commit.
This story will change your perspective forever on how prison affects both the prisoner and the family of the prisoner, whether guilty or not. . In fact, I now feel burdened to minister to in some way to the families of prisoners or ex-cons. I never really thought before about fact that the family is considered guilty by association. This story so beautifully revealed that both the prisoner and the family by association are treated differently, carry the shackles of guilt and loneliness, and suffer from lack of human touch due to being abandoned by old friends and avoiding attachment with new ones.
One of my favorite quotes is in chapter 8 where Jenn gets some advice “Bumps in the road mean you’re normal. It’s how you navigate those roadblocks that make you unique.”
Brenda and Sarah Anderson are "new to me authors". I was very intrigued by the synopsis of the book and that the book was written by a Mother and Daughter.
Jennifer and Chad Taylor had dreams of opening a Coffee Shop together. Chad is in prison on charges he is innocent of. Jennifer decides to go ahead and open the Coffee Shop with her older children, while Chad is in prison. Jennifer has always hoped Chad would be released from Prison on these charges. As the day draws near that he might be released, Jennifer is unsure of where she wants her relationship to be with Chad. Will Jennifer have Chad come back home and their marriage be safe? Will Chad be OK that the Coffee Shop was opened during this absence?
WOW, what a powerful storyline. I was hooked onto the storyline from the very first chapter. I couldn't put the book down until I finished the book. I really like how the Authors really connected the storyline to what could be real life events. Though the book is fiction is reads like real life. This is a book about Redemption, leaning on God during Life Challenges, and finding hope. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone looking for a book on Life's Encouragement. WONDERFUL BOOK!
I’ve grown to expect outstanding quality whenever I read Brenda S. Anderson’s books, and Broken Together is no exception. This time, she’s teamed up with her daughter Sarah Anderson to tell a story that moved me deeply.
It's about a woman whose husband was sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Jenn, left alone to raise their twins, has faced several years of struggle as her friends and church family turned their backs on her and her children.
But now fresh evidence has turned up and there’s a chance that her husband Chad might be exonerated. Jenn never gave up hope that Chad’s innocence would be proved. But the events of the past eight years have shown that not all prisons are surrounded with gray walls. Chad’s release will be only the first step on a long road of healing.
This book kept getting better and better with every page I turned. I had no idea of all the things prisoners and their families go through, even when the prison term has ended. This a story that will stay with me for a long time.
Brenda writes the best kind of romance: a tale of love within the context of a wider story of God’s power to heal and restore the broken places inside each of us.
This novel is hard to pin down. It's a romance, and yet not. It's family drama, with all members working through things in their own unique stories, yet it's also centrally about husband and wife. It's a Christian story, but also a no-holds-barred, gritty look at prison life and what years in prison can do to a person. I wasn't expecting the twists and turns involved in telling this story, but that was the price of telling a real story, not a Pollyanna story. There's pain and sin and setbacks, falling out of love and back into it. There's doubt and faith. The story deals honestly and sensitively with the powerful effects a prison sentence has beyond the convicted individual to the entire family and even community. My only (mild) beef was the seeming uncritical acceptance of the Innocence Project's assertion that there are many innocent people incarcerated. This is contested and not all of IP's causes have turned out for true justice. But beyond that, this novel is recommended for anyone wanting to know, understand, and help/walk alongside post-prison friends and family.
Wow this book was sensational. It is not your warm fuzzy story but a very real story with a message of forgiveness, redemption and grace. The story really follows this family through all the ups and downs and the emotions that you feel are definitely those that you want to feel when you are reading a book. It is amazing that through a fiction book God can speak to someone and this book will definitely touch those that are looking for God when everything seems hopeless. When you feel that God is not listening or answering your prayers when in fact He has just perhaps not in the way we want to.
This is a new to me author but I will definitely be looking more from her. I definitely recommend this one.
I received a copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
This is one of those stories that stays with the reader long after the last page was turned. It was over two weeks ago and yet I’m still thinking about Chad and Jennifer and their children. Wow – Broken Together was the perfect title and yet, with God as the center of both of their lives, there was hope. I loved how the author didn’t sugarcoat the issues the characters faced, and brought to light things I wouldn’t have even thought about. Wonderful story … so much redemption, love, and hope throughout.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit but was not under any obligation to write a review. All opinions are strictly mine.
This book touched my heart in ways I can't put into words. The story was captivating and enlightening.
Chad and Jenn's story was just simply life changing. At some point their story was heart-wrenching but I love how the story ended with the amazing grace of God displayed.
I love second chance story and this was one of them. The author did not shy away from issues but handled them with so much grace.
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.
By walking with the protagonists along their challenging journey, I gained insight into incarceration issues I’d never considered before. Jenn and Chad love each other deeply, but after eight difficult years apart due to Chad’s prison sentence (he’s innocent), his release creates new difficulties. The well-drawn characters are forced to adjust to different versions of themselves—versions shaped by the experiences of those eight years—as they struggle to become a family once again.
The authors have crafted a realistic portrayal of how imprisonment affects individuals and their families, the painful process of reintegrating into society, and the need for God’s strength, mercy, and grace for healing.
If you are looking for a good read, please try Broken Together, by Brenda Anderson. I just finished it and it was a real page turner. It was about a couple with 2 kids that want to open a coffee/hot chocolate shop. The husband was accused of a murder he didn't commit and ended up in jail. Heartbroken, his wife and kids try to prove that he did not commit the murder. It has been 7 years and he is still in prison. The family at this time find a little place in a small town to try and make a go of a coffee/hot chocolate shop. Please read this and see what happens and how it happens. I don't want to spoil it for you. It is a great read!
This is a subject I had never read about before. I think it was well researched and well-written. Praise God that hard times come but then they go. They can impact us in awful ways. However, by God’s grace, He can make all things new. Very well done!
"Today was the perfect day to plot her prison break." From the first line, I was hooked!
There are so many relatable truths wrapped up in a topic I never before considered. From steps of faith into the unknown, to the challenges of parenting and marriage, this book cut straight to my heart!
The coffee/cocoa connection is a great bonus too! I can almost smell it in the air.
This is a moving story about a couple working to save their marriage in a most difficult circumstance. Chad serves time in prison for a crime he didn't commit. When he is released, freedom isn't as easy as one would think. This novel looks at the difficulties families impacted by prison face. I learned a lot. It's a beautiful story of what happens when you persevere through a tough situation with the help of God.
A lovely book about a broken family healed by His love. I have always enjoyed Brenda's books! Keep up the good work! I received this ARC book from the author for my honest review
I like how they shared life's struggles. Bringing love & forgiveness together to demonstrate God's purpose for our lives. And in this story you never know what's coming next!
I loved Jenn and Chad’s story in Broken Together. Jenn was such an special character. She loved Chad so much. Chad was in prison for something he did not do. So hard on a marriage with him in prison. Jenn opens an coffee shop which was their dream before Chad going to prison. I loved their twins, Chloe and Jason, they added so much to the story with them being grown. I loved how they helped Jenn but had their own lives.
Broken together kept my attention from start to finish. This would have been a hard book to write. I would a lot of research when into the story. I recommend reading this book.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. This book review is my own opinion.
Jenn and Chad's story wasn't easy to read, but it felt so real. Jenn was forced to raise her twins alone when Her husband was sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit. I was cheering Jenn on to start her coffee and hot chocolate business. Then prayed along with the family that Chase would be released and his record removed. I fussed at the overbearing Mother and then was shocked to discover how prison life had changed Chad. All my emotions surfaced just as the characters did. To me, that's what makes a great book. I highly recommend 'Broken Together', to everyone. I received this book from the publisher. The thoughts and comments are my own.
A powerful story! And a story different than any I’ve ever read. This is probably one of the best books I’ve read this year! Those who enjoy stories of original contemporary romance will love this book. I received a copy of this book from the author, but all opinions are my own.
Wow! What an amazing story!! I really liked this story because it gives a real life look into the life of someone who has been sentenced to prison and how that affects them and their family as well. I recommend this story to anyone and everyone! I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book and the review is my honest opinion.
Broken Together has became my favorite fiction book. Brenda and her daughter Sarah have went above and beyond. This book feels like a roller coaster ride when you read it with all of its ups and downs. This book had me hooked in the beginning and wanting more when I finished.
I really liked "Broken Together" by Brenda S. Anderson & Sarah S Anderson. The book is about a husband going to prison for something that he didn't do. This is a story that happens too much and yes it made me cry but the ending was so great. This book touches so many emotions that I have added it as my number 1 book read this year so far. This is a book that really shows that even when things go wrong in life, we can and must still trust God. This book is about forgiveness and "real love". This is a story that shows life can be hard but we can overcome.
My favorite quote from this book is Exodus 14:14 "The Lord will fight for you, and you only have to be silent. "
I was given a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
