Join us in searching for clues to solve this mystery. Detective Bear will share his magnifying glass with you. As you read through the pages, you will know what to do. Look for the hidden cake, and you'll be a detective too!
My son is already a big fan of the bear and the moose. I love the way the hidden item is tricky to find on each page, and we don’t have to get frustrated searching endlessly for many items. The story goes perfectly with the search, so my 6yo stays interested throughout. Who doesn’t enjoy a book about cake? I gave it 3 stars instead of 5 because there were a few typos that interrupted the reading. I still recommend this as a great story.
Another cute book by Carmel Greenberg and Randy Jennings. This book takes place on Thanksgiving day and after the dinner everyone is looking forward to the chocolate cake.....but it's missing. Enter Detective Bear and Samuel L. Turk to find the missing cake.
Once again a good story and the beautiful and colorful illustrations will have children enjoying this book. Then there is the hidden cake on every page to find, what else could you ask for. My granddaughter and I enjoyed reading and finding the hidden pictures together so there was the added bonus.
Fans of Where's Waldo will appreciate this book. It offers a similar experience, albeit for much younger reader. It helps to teach a child the importance of tuning into the details when they need to solve a problem. I look forward to seeing more titles in the series.
At first glance I thought the seek and find might be a tad advanced for my two year old daughter. Some pieces of cake were super easy to find and some took a tad longer to find.
Once we got a few pages into it, all she wanted to do was find the pieces of cake and didn’t really care about the story itself. But she is two and if you have slightly older kids I think they would be into either listening to the story or reading it themselves and looking for the pieces of cake. Aside from the cake there are other objects hidden on almost every page. For instance pumpkins are everywhere, leaves or pilgrims and it is Thanksgiving themed. So once your child has memorized all the cakes you can find other objects as well.
This book is definitely good for more than one read since the language isn’t hard it could also be used as a sort of first reader book.

It is Thanksgiving day and family is all together, but when the dessert goes missing, what will they do!? After calling Detective Bear and Samuel L. Turk, they must investigate to find who could have done it.
A silly, cute, adorable tale of a family and their Thanksgiving mishap, and a lesson well learned. My daughter and I read this together, and she had a blast finding all of the hidden pieces of cake on each page. The illustrations were bright and colorful, leaving a lot to catch a child’s attention. The detective characters, a bear and moose, were very fun and my daughter absolutely loved them! We loved the ending as well, leaving everyone with a sweet taste in their mouth! *A complimentary review copy was gifted to me for my opinion.
This is another seek and find book from Greenberg and Jennings. I love that there is a story behind the searching with an actual plot. I think it would be nice to see some different things to find instead of just the one item each page. The illustrations could be better. There is a time when the words say aunts and uncles were tired, but only the aunt looked tired. There is an image of one of the boys in the story shooting a large Nerf-like gun in the house. He looks like a brat, but I am not sure that was the author's intent. I do like the story better than the illustrations in both books by the duo. I am being critical, but I can say from experience in elementary school and raising children--children will like this book a lot.
This was such a good book for kids to read! To me, the targeted audience for this book is 1st-3rd graders. I say this because there is rhyming throughout the story that younger students might not be able to grasp. The basis of this story was good because it used real-life things like moose, houses, detectives, etc. so children are able to make real-world connections. The only issue I had with this book was the length. Although a good book for kids, I feel like it would be too long for them to stay engaged.
I received a review copy of this book in exchange for my opinion, and my opinion is that this book is adorable. It's Thanksgiving Day and all the family is assembled and has had dinner, but alas, the chocolate cake for dessert is missing!! This calls for Detective Bear and his sidekick Moose. As in any good picture book, the mystery is solved and all is set right in the end. The additional fun of this book is that each two-page spread contains a slice of chocolate cake hiding somewhere. A great holiday book.
Bold colorful pictures pair with simple rhyming phrases in this memorable childrens book. Every page has a hidden slice of cake for kids to find. I thought some of them would be too difficult for younger children, but even a two year old quickly spotted it eagerly on each page. Even knowing where the slices were, she still wants to read the story again and again. The story is simple to follow for little minds, and flows easily except for one or two lines.
Thank you to the author and publisher for a copy in exchange for an honest review.
