For twenty years Rob had no memory of that night, but lately things are coming back to him, and Whitney's worried that her brother might, once again, be in danger.

Clifford knows only too well what it's like be haunted by the past, and so he agrees to help. But the deeper he digs, the more secrets he uncovers, and soon he discovers that Rob's not the only one in danger.

Again Poor Seb is less important to this book than Birdie

I LOATH Birdie
1] she never shuts up all we hear is what she ate and why she was late and Blah blah blah
2] apparently she is surrounded by people who are even dumber than she is because she constantly has to explain everything she says
3] People say she's a good copper; she isn't ever she is an idiot who is a loud mouth who wants to do anything but what she's assigned.
4] She's a nutter

Birdie and her birth mother

Trite, pointless and dull

Love this series and this time it merged with Sally Rigby's other series so more bang for your buck !! She does write some really likeable characters and for some reason I always remember hers well, apart from Brian in this one.....I thought he was a new boy but he isn't....I just can't remember much about him. Great to see Birdie back again as well, a favourite of mine. I laughed aloud when she snapped a picture of Twiggy going into a cake-shop to use against him....
I did get a little confused here and there as to who was based or lived in Lenchester and who was in Market Harborough, but I just flicked over to a search on my Kindle to remind me.
I've wanted to know for ages what the story was behind Rob's brain damage so it was good to finally learn the whole back story. I wasn't keen on his girlfriend, Charli...she didn't sound a tremendously nice person at all. I did chuckle a couple of times when people refer to Sebastian remembering something and they're oblivious to his special talent. It always makes me smile. One incident left my jaw on the floor, a real shocker.
I got a kick out of the ending and look forward to the next one in this series with great anticipation !!
I was sent an ARC of this book so will address any more comments directly to the author.

I really like the two main characters - I did from the start; they're not your typical detective duo and I like that. The writing isn't literary, but the stories & character are very enjoyable.

My two favorite series' come together to work on a very personal cold case.

As always, there's lots of banter and . some personal issues come to light that don't stay hidden causing some distress.

But our ever professional team strive to go by the book to solve their cases no matter how infuriating that may be!

I received an ARC of this book from the author and I am giving you my honest review.

A stunning crime novel that looks at a cold case from twenty-five years ago. The characterization is particularly compelling in a plot that involves the attack on Rob Walker that left him brain-damaged.
Seb and Birdie continue to develop into very engaging leads in a story that also involves Whitney Walker. It's all very personal as it was Whitney's brother who was injured.
This series continues to get better and better..

No plot you could get into

I'm enjoying this series less and less. Very disappointing. The author has a lot of potential. The characters and the dialogue seems real to me. There are no jarring hooks so many series have, such as Twiggy needing food. Some police series will take such a "hook" and use it over and over to the point that it breaks reader's concentration. In this book, there was total lack of interest in the plot and side stories. The relationships are superficial and the premise of catching a bigwig whose criminal activity in a small city for 30 yrs should have been obvious at least 25 years before. I'm not sure I can endure a book 4 though the characters could have come to bloom like Lord Lindsey and Barbara. If you are going to imitate, you should strive to be better.

Birdie continues trying to find her birth mother despite the birth mother clearly stating she doesn’t want to be found and despite Birdie having two parents she loves. Twiggy (what’s with all the tree names I hear you ask, what indeed) continues behaving in an embarrassingly childish way toward Sebastian for seemingly no reason. Birdie tells Twiggy to cut it out about 300 times.
Oh yeah and there’s a mystery but we figure out what it is about half way through the book and then nothing interesting happens after that aside from Birdie visiting a medium.
Best character by far is Elsa the Labrador.

Very mixed feelings about this series. I don’t find the characterisation remotely realistic and in some places it is actually irritating. But the books are well plotted and easy reading. And for winter that is perfect. (Well sort of.)

Never Too Late, the third novel in the Detective Sebastian Clifford series, is a nail-biting mystery. The police are pushing try to solve cold cases. DCI Whitney Walker’s own family has a case that needs solving. Her brother Rob was attacked, and left brain damaged twenty-five years ago. While Clifford works on solving the past, a newer case in which Birdie is involved is encroaching on the past. As they join forces, the past will meet the present and several crimes will come to light….much more than anyone could have anticipated. The detailed plot, vivid descriptions, and compelling characters make this crime thriller an exciting read. Another fantastic book from Sally Rigby. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I love this book in the Seb Clifford series. In this one Seb is still waiting to hear if Birdie will join him in his PI business when they each have separate cases. Birdie and Twiggy get assigned to a task force investigating a wealthy philanthropist. Meanwhile, Seb receives a call from Whitney in Lenchester. She asks Seb to investigate the beating that Whitney's brother, Rob, received twenty-five years ago, leaving him brain damaged. Rob recently mentioned a secret and Whitney thinks it's a clue. I really enjoy the Cavendish & Walker series too, so to blend them together was awesome. And then when it becomes clear that Birdie's and Seb's cases are converging, it was fantastic.

This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series!
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story.
Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down.
Can't wait to read more of these.
Recommend reading.

Sally has done it again!
Rob finally gets justice when Sebastian’s case intersects with Birdie’s. Whitney’s team is at their disposal and they all join forces to solve both cases.
Filled with multiple suspects, clues, and mystery this is an absolutely
satisfying book with an intriguing ending. Don’t miss it — highly recommended.

Lacked consistency I felt

Perhaps because this started as two separate stories the main relationship struggled and therefore the storyline did not have the same glue as the previous two. I often found myself confused with jumping between so many storylines: the birth mother, the partners illness to name two of the minor ones. So many things appeared thrown in for no reason. The headscarf presumably was a hint to the slavery but that was too big a leap for me personally, and I felt the guns were enough evil for one man. The ending disappointed me too. It was very Disney. So many hints that Rob was not a nice young man as not were his friends, yet his beating was caused by seeing a shooting that he should not have. He had told his friends but they never even have appeared to have been threatened. How more interesting if he had actually been happily involved with the shooting but spoke about it unwisely or something. This was even hinted at in Seb's unwillingness to have the sister in the viewing area. But rather than a multi-levelled ending, or one with a twist like so many of Stephen King's, we had a saccharine sweet one that made the effort of wading through the convoluted storyline more of a chore without a reward. I had enjoyed the first two but will certainly be taking a break, at least, from this series.

Not a Birdie fan.

The storyline was excellent, two police forces investigating separate incidents. Clifford is consulting on a cold case while Birdie is part of a current investigation into a local business man. When it is discovered that the cases are linked the investigations are joined. I debated on how many stars because after three book I just can’t like Birdie. She is very unprofessional in that she is always late and she bosses everyone like she is the superior officer. Then there is Twiggy who in every book behaves like a teenager. Clifford is great and so are the storylines but both Birdie and Twiggy irritate me.

I have progressively reduced my rating for the 3 books in this series.
What started as a very promising series quickly dwindled on the promised mystery and thrill promised. I even compared seb to a more humanized Jack Reacher, but by end of book 3, I am revoking that anology.
Amongst the many things listed by other reviewers, the two which are nagging me the most are - the main character, almost fades into the sidelines and has no distinctive traits of being a main character.
All of the police force has funny? Silly names - Birdie, Twiggy, Sparkle, Tiny...??? Really... ??

I am going to stop listening to this series at this point. The plot is passable but the characters are just not interesting.

I am also not in love when the author needs to explain how the characters are feeling and why they are feeling what they are feeling. I would rather understand it through their actions and dialogue. So, the writing isn't doing it for me either.

Never too late takes the readers back to a cold case dealing with Walker's brother's attack. You'll learn about it and how Birdie has another case that may be crossing into this investigation. The characters will win you heart as they develope.

I bought an audiobook collecting the first three books in this series. Although Clifford is a PI, no longer a police detective, this series follows the police procedural genre formula of focusing on the investigation and taking it step by step until the case is resolved. In this case, a cold case that Sebastian is asked to take on by an old police colleague runs into a current-day case being worked by his friend Birdie's police detective department.

They join forces, with Birdie's partner Twiggy being most reluctant to do so, since he has always had issues with Clifford, kind of like a man jealous of the other man in his work wife's life. I've never found that aspect of these books interesting or particularly believable, and the revelation of something in Twiggy's life that could account for his bad attitude isn't compelling.

The two cases are only lukewarm interesting. Birdie's personal quest to find her birth mother continues, with some slight but not very interesting progress. At least Clifford's annoying parents are absent in this book, and I'm extremely grateful there wasn't much of Birdie's obnoxious habit of being late for everything, no matter how important.

While I can't give this an enthusiastic thumbs up, and I won't be continuing to read this series, it's an acceptable way to pass the time if you enjoy procedurals and you don't have anything else appealing to you at the moment.

2.5 stars, rounded to 3.

DCI Whitney Walker of the Cavendish & Walker series appears in this 3rd book in the Detective Sebastian Clifford series. If you are familiar with the first series you know that Whitney's brother was attacked as a teenager and left with irreversible brain damage. That case was never solved. Now due to something Rob said, Whitney asks Sebastian Clifford, whom she worked with briefly when he was a cop, to investigate. We also see Birdie, who still hasn't accepted Sebastian's offer to become his partner, and Twiggy investigating a case of their own. This sounds like a lot of overlap but all these connections are explained well and make this book a stand-alone, although you really shouldn't miss to miss these two great series. Both series are full of detailed police and investigative work aided by keen observation and intuition. I love these characters and feel like they are friends of mine. They are far from perfect but are totally believable and relatable. Seb is the son of a viscount and well off while Birdie is struggling to earn enough to move out of her parent's home. Seb is straightlaced, rarely showing much emotion and ALWAYS on time. Birdie is all emotion and ALWAYS late. Yet these two different personalities get along and compliment the work of the other. I received a copy of this book from the author. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to many more.

Third and not surprisingly, super story, in the Sebastian Clifford Series.

Once again, Whitney asks Sebastian (an ex. Met Detective) for his help with a cold case that is very close to her heart as it involves her older Brother, Rob, who was brutally attacked some years ago leaving him with severe brain damage. His attackers were never found and now the cold case has been re-opened.

However, before the case is handed over to another team in the Lenchester Force - when her family’s past will then become common knowledge - Whitney has been given just two weeks, by her superior officer, to solve the case.

Meanwhile, Sebastian is still waiting for an answer from Birdie as to whether or not she will leave her current position as a DC in the Market Harborough police force and join him in his new business as a private investigator.

Two weeks is a very short time but, as Sebastian has previously worked with Whitney on another case, she has faith in his ability to .

Read as a stand alone or as part of the series, it is a gripping tale.

The link between the Sebastian Clifford Series and Cavendish and Walker Series is a seamless and subtle one and both Series are very entertaining.

Highly Recommended.

This book is very exciting! I lived reading it because it kept my interest right from the beginning! I love the character that the author has created with Birdie, she is such a smart young woman but lol she certainly has some bad habits! I would love to tell you what they are but I don't want to ruin any of the book for you. I also like Sebastian Clifford, son to a Viscount, but not wanting to live that life. He was a police officer but circumstances arose that were out of his control so he has decided on a new career. This book has a cameo appearance from George a main character in Ms. Rigby's, Cavendish and Walker series. A main part is also given to Whitney Walker and we get to have a case solved from the other series by Birdie and Seb that readers of the other series have been looking forward to for a long time. This book is another great story with lots of action and suspense that I really enjoyed! Congratulations to the author for bringing the two series together brilliantly!
I received a free download of this book from the publisher. This review is totally my own honest opinion of a wonderful book!

It was great finding out what happened to Whitney's brother, Rob. Hints had been coming throughout the years in several of the books. Now, we know the rest of the story.

Seb Clifford is an enjoyable character. Seeing him interact with Whitney and crew and with Birdie and crew makes for an enjoyable read. I had the feeling that the two investigations would end up crossing over into each other. Once I read who Rob's girlfriend's father was, it was a given that Whitney's group and Birdie's group would be a help to each other.

Birdie loves working with Seb and has a decision to make because he's offered her a position working with him. Birdie loves her job with the police department and is not sure she'll have as many good criminal cases while working with Seb Clifford. So far, he's had some great cases and his talents, especially his incredible perfect memory, make him a valuable asset for any police department that wishes to use him.

Birdie also has great loyalty for her partner Twiggy. Twiggy has been difficult to work with during this case. He seems to be jealous of Birdie's working relationship with Seb and is acting out of character. When Birdie discovers the reason why Twiggy is behaving the way he is, it makes it even harder for Birdie to make her career decision.

Old friends from Whitney's brother Rob's background are found and interviewed. Finally, the mystery of that night comes to light. Not only that but a new criminal activity is discovered that is stopped before the lives of many vulnerable young women are destroyed.

Of course, Rob's brain damage cannot be reversed. At least those responsible will never be able to do that to anyone else and maybe Rob will have a little less stress in his life and be able to let go of some of his fears.

Never too Late by Sally Rigby 6/10/2022 Kindle

I keep picking up copies of this series although I didn't much like the first couple. I guess it's growing on me. This is the third installment in the series that moves ex-policeman Sebastian Clifford into private practice. His first project is to discover details of the decades old attack that left DCI Whitney’s brother the victim of life-long brain damage. As details seem to emerge, there is a fear danger may follow. I’m not familiar with Whitney but assume she is highlighted in another series.

Joining Seb with his detecting is Birdie, still employed on the police force, but more than willing to run down the clues. Unfortunately, I continued to be annoyed by space-filling repetition of known happenings and the overdone nonsense of Birdie being habitually late.

Aside from that, this is an amusing series that doesn’t take much concentration. While it is quite predictable, I’ll continue to follow this pairs exploits between more serious and better written reading.

Another very good story in this series! I do enjoy reading about the interactions between Sebastian and Birdie, he was taught to show very little emotion and she is all emotion, their upbringing also is rather different in a way that they almost see the world in complementary ways. Whilst working on a cold case related to Whitney's brother Rob, Seb sees his path cross with that of Birdie and Twig on an up-to-date case of smuggling guns and people, and, again they are able to work together. There's a lot happening with Birdie, will she be able to give an answer to Sebastian regarding the proposed business partnership? How will she continue to hunt for details regarding her birth mother? Will Seb's PI agency business prosper? I'm looking forward to reading the next book to have these answers!

This is the 3rd Clifford book this one is marginally better than the last. This time he works for DCI Witney Walker who asks him to look into the affray that left her brother brain damaged, and her boss was paying for 2 weeks' work so he had to get a move on. He on occasions bought in Birdie who is a police constable but Seb as offered her a job with him as a partner in his Private Detective business which she is thinking about. She is known for her bad time-keeping which does not seem to improve thus making me think that for an institution like the police would just turn a blind eye, hmm but according to everybody she is always late and that's ok. and sometimes Clifford comes over like a wet blanket as he is the son of a peer, which he is trying to play Whitney was working on. I have always enjoyed the Whitney Walker series but this series does not grab my attention.

This may be the latest in the Sebastian Clifford series but it could be part of the awesome Cavendish and Walker series as it features many of the great characters from both series. Sebastian Clifford takes on the case of an attack on Whitney Walker’s brother that happened many years before and left him severely brain damaged. Sally Rigby does her usual superb job weaving a story that holds the reader all the way. For fans of the author, and therefore her other series, this is a great book as we finally get to discover what exactly happened to Whitney’s brother. It’s also a great story in its own right, and rightly had me hooked, and features an investigation by the police, most notably by Clifford's friend Birdie. It’s everything I’ve come to expect and love from Sally Rigby: well written, well paced, great characters and an utterly engrossing story line.

"You make a good team ."

Whilst Clifford is employed as a consultant for two weeks trying to discover the person who assaulted the young bother of an old CID friend from some 25 years ago, the police woman Birdie, with her ever hungry partner, are looking into suggestions that the wealthy and generous benefactor of the area was not quite as squeaky clean as was thought, instead being part of a gun running scheme. And all the time, the big question was, would Birdie leave the force to join Web in his newly formed detective agency?

Interesting characters come alive with the performance of the excellent Jonathan Keeble where everyone has a voice of their own, and the story line, whilst not overly fast paced, has a sense of possibility and enough detail to keep the reader interested.

A pleasant, easy read.

Never Too Late by Sally Rigby is book 3 in the Sebastian Clifford series. It was such a good read. Seb is contracted by DCI Whitney Walker to investigate the assault on her brother Rob, 25 years ago which left him brain-damaged. Whitney is the main character from Sally’s other series of books (Cavendish & Walker) which are also excellent reads. All the characters are quite different and it was good to have them all in the one book. Birdie and Twiggy are very quirky characters too. It is like meeting up with friends. The case is tricky as it all happened so long ago but Seb is determined to find out what happened. It is a complicated plot but the story flows really well and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Never Too Late - a review by Rosemary Kenny.

A cold case from 25 years ago poses tough questions for PI Seb Clifford, when Detective Chief Inspector Whitney Walker from a neighbouring force, hires Seb to reinvestigate the unsolved mystery of what happened to her brother as new clues are uncovered.
Seb's friend, Detective Inspector Clarice 'Birdie' Bird is on stakeout with her sidekick 'Twiggy', but is also on a personal quest simultaneously. How do her and Seb's separate investigations overlap?
Intense and dangerous situations, murder, drugs and even sex-trafficking are just some of the crimes linked and connected in a riveting, police-procedural which involves a life-changing decision for one MC.
