“I will do everything within my meager Powerless power to protect every person that came out of that building with me,”

Unique is a tumultuous ride through a dystopian world, and an epic sequel to Ordinary.

I struggled a little bit to get into the book at first, though it has been some time since I read Ordinary and I think this is likely why. It took me some time to put some of the pieces together of the events, some of the characters and their significance.

However, things really picked up about 1/3 of the way through, and by the half-way mark I was more than hooked and didn't want to put the book down. Davies has a talent for upping the stakes and ensuring that things don't always go the way you'd expect.

If you enjoyed Ordinary, you definitely don't want to miss this pulse-pounding second installment!

I thought the first book was intense, but in Unique the dial is turned to max. :)

The story picks up right where Ordinary left off. His group, well what is left of it, was saved and taken to a safe place. On the surface, it seems like the perfect place for them to, but something just isn't as it should be. The more he digs up, the more shocking truth is revealed, about him, Paragon, Directorate, and what is really going on.

It's non stop action, from the start till the end. I feel like I didn't even blink till the last page. The setting, the storyline, the characters, it's all soo good and brilliantly executed.

Just so awesome & I'm looking forward to binge read the series. :)

What Made Me Read It I was sent a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. The author described the first book of the "Ordinary" duology as a young adult sci-fi dystopian novel, inspired by her love for superheroes like Batman and Spiderman; Starr Davies also mentioned she gained a reputation as the "Character Assassin", while pursuing a degree in creative writing, for her "habit of utterly destroying her characters emotionally and physically". Having greatly enjoyed book #1 of the series, I was curious to see the conclusion of the story and what laid in store for Ugene and the people of Elpis.

The Plot After barely escaping with their lives from Paragon Tower, Ugene and the small group of surviving test subjects are taken in by the Protectorate, a group of freedom fighters whose mission is to rescue and protect those targeted by the Directorate and Paragon, expose their lies and take down the system. But after everything he went through at the hands of Dr. Cass and the betrayals suffered during his confinement, Ugene finds it hard to trust anyone. Something about Willow Barnes, the leader of the Protectorate, doesn't feel right and Ugene is suspicious of her true goals.

But with the looming threat of Proposition 9, he is once again faced with a hard choice. Burdened with the responsibility of keeping his companions safe and haunted by feelings of guilt and sorrow over those he lost - close friends, his long time crush Bianca and his own father - joining the cause and help make a better future for all the people of Elpis might be the only way to protect his friends. All he has to guide him is the book left behind by Celeste with another one of her cryptic prophecies: A man who hides behind The Shield is safe. A man who raises The Shield is the Hero. Ugene has been powerless all his life and doesn't feel he's up to the task... but one doesn't need powers to have brains.

The Good "Unique" is the second and last book of the 'Ordinary' duology, a young adult sci-fi novel set in a futuristic post-apocalyptic world, told in the first person through the eyes of the main character, a powerless teenage boy living in a world of powered people, struggling to protect his friends while making a stand against a corrupted system. In book #1 ("Ordinary") we were introduced to the seemingly utopian society of Elpis, built after a devastating civil war between humans with enhanced abilities and those without which left the planet a barren place incapable of sustaining life. As more people were being born with weaker powers or succumbing to degenerative diseases, Ugene volunteered as a test subject in Dr. Cass' research to stop Regression, in the hopes of gaining powers of his own and help save his father from a fatal condition. When the research turned out to be both a lie and a life-threatening experiment, Ugene and his fellow test subjects joined forces to fight their way out of the facility.

Book #2 ("Unique") takes up where book #1 left off. The story is once again divided in 3 parts: part 1 introduces the rebel group Protectorate, as Ugene and his fellow survivors take refuge in their hidden base; part 2 shows the impact of Proposition 9 in the impoverish neighborhood of Pax; part 3 follows Ugene as he sets out to expose and stop Directorate Chief Seaduss' plans for the people of Elpis.

The plot is fast-paced, with thrilling action sequences where the rebels fight and evade the Directorate's DMA (Department of Military Affairs) militia forces, and an ongoing mystery with plenty of suspense and political intrigue as Ugene tries to unravel both the Directorate's plans and the Protectorate's true goals. The worldbuilding is complex and imaginative: The Shield, an old underground military base built before the Purge repurposed to offer sanctuary for those sentenced to death by the Directorate; the Consumption Tax and Proposition 9, a controversial law that forces regressing citizens with weak powers and debts to join the military forces; recessive genetic allele mutations and PTPD (post-traumatic powerloss depression), a genetic explanation to how powers are developed... all these elements help build the powered society of Elpis and explore the social and class discrimination of its citizens, moving the plot forward.

The characters are well developed and realistic, with believable motivations and goals, be it survival or pursuit of power at any cost. Ugene in particular shows strong emotional growth throughout the story: from dealing with feelings of guilt over losing so many test subjects during their escape from Paragon Diagnostics, burdened by the responsibility of ensuring the safety of the remaining survivors, overwhelmed by the unwavering trust placed in him and torn between the love of two girls; to his determination to expose the lies told by the Directorate and end a repressive system, to think big and help create a better future for everyone while confronting bullies and ghosts from his past.

All in all, a truly engaging series with a great and satisfying ending.

Final Rating 5 of 5 stars. "Unique" is the second and final book in the 'Ordinary' duology, a young adult sci-fi novel set in a futuristic post-apocalyptic world, fast-paced with thrilling action sequences, an ongoing mystery and plenty of suspense and political intrigue. Just like Ordinary, the first book of the Power Series, Unique by Starr Z. Davies was a fast-paced, page-turning story filled with action and fighting. The fight scenes are not gruesome in any way.

Ugene returns in this book, still battling Paragon because of their immoral and illegal activities as they continue to mislead the people of Epis. Still one of the few without a super power, Ugene shows over and over again that he can be just as formidable an opponent as anyone with a super power.

Ugene connects with each of his friends in a special way, and it was enjoyable to watch as their relationships developed, especially his relationships with Enid and Celeste, the most interesting character and the most unique relationship of all.

The ending of Unique was bittersweet and solid.

One thing I would like to point out is that in Ordinary, Ms. Davies very briefly mentioned that one of the characters had been in a gay relationship. In Unique, these two characters are reunited. However, the relationship is a very minor part of the book and really has very little to do with the storyline, and the only affection exchanged by the two is a hug.

Once again, I received an ebook copy of Unique by Starr Z. Davies for my honest review, and once again, I was not disappointed as I pushed my bedtime to the last possible minute each night because I didn’t want to stop reading. Unique also gets a 5 star rating from me.

Even better than the first book.

I really like the narrator. He brought the story to life. This part of the story was more exciting and attention grabbing than the first. Once Ugene and his remaining friends escape from Paragon they land in the hands of the Protectorate. The Protectorate has some similarities to the Directorate and it's up to Ugene to use his brain power to figure out how to liberate his city from the subjugation imposed by the Directorate while trying to figure out if he can trust the Protectorate to truly help with the liberation effort. The battle for freedom takes it's toll in even more of Ugene's friends. There are still some threads that need to be tied up at the end of this part of the story and will hopefully be addressed in the last installment of the story.

Thank you to Starr for providing me with a copy of Unique to review. All opinions are my own.

Book two picks up right where book one left us, Ugene leaving Paragon and turning up at a new facility. Ugene is set on finding out what the DMA truly is and what they are hiding not only about themselves but what they know about Paragon. Although I don’t think he intends to, he throws the world into chaos. What’s the saying? Curiosity killed the cat? In this case, it applies.

I thoroughly enjoyed book 2! The drama, intentions and plot are heightened, giving the book more action and more intensity. I enjoyed watching the new characters and old characters grow, learn and develop as the plot unfolds. There’s twists and turns you never would’ve expected and this was a joy to read from start to finish! What a great series this is. If you enjoy dystopian novels, I highly recommend checking these out!

Ugene along with the other test subjects escape Paragon but their battles are far from over. The battle for freedom is still on. Ugene and his friends meet up with a group who call themselves the Protectorate. The Protectorate is a group of people who are rising up against the Paragon and the Directorate fighting for freedom. After everything he has been through Ugene is having a hard time trusting anyone. Ugene is determined to save all the people and fight for what is right and if that means fighting alongside the Protectorate then that is what he will do.

Ugene is unique in that he lives in a world where everyone but him has some sort of special power. Ugene has learned to live with knowing that he is different than everyone else and has learned to find other ways to fight his battles and to help his friends without any kind of special powers.

A friend of Ugene’s has his powers taken from him and has a hard time dealing with it. Losing his powers has caused Miller to become very depressed. He is having a hard time dealing with his lost. He thinks he is worthless now and can’t do anything to help them fight against Paragon and the Protectorate but Ugene tells him that he can help out in other ways. Ugene tries to explain to him that he has a special talent he just has to figure out what that may be.

Unique is a fast paced read that will pull you in from the beginning and never let up until you have read the last page. It is a very intense read that will keep you on the edger of your seat as battle after battle is fought. Unique is about power, fighting and standing up for what is right and not letting someone take control and dominating their power over others. Unique is about fighting evil and not letting evil take over and not letting evil in.

I highly recommend Unique to all science fiction/dystopia fans who are into futuristic worlds. But I do suggest that you read the first book Ordinary in the series before reading Unique.

The troubles were not over after the escape from Paragon. The uprising of the Protectorate is beginning, but can they be trusted either?

Starr Z. Davies kept the action and emotions running at full tilt in this second book in the Powers series. A fantastic story that I didn’t want to put down.

I also enjoyed Nathaniel Asher’s performance. His timing and pacing were great, and he certainly kept me engaged in everything that was going on.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

‘Remember the stars’

This book touches upon adaptation to a non-inclusive and therefore intolerant world. For those of us who do not “fit in” are seen as non-compliant (among other things). Some are able to mask their differences and others figure out ways to circumvent the system. The vast majority do not have the support like Ugene did, whether due to ignorance or apathy or even shame. We all have gifts and various ways of applying them. Don’t lose out by ignoring people who differ from what society calls the norm.
I appreciate how the author addressed Post-Traumatic Powerloss Depression since we do have something similar IRL.

How does one fight against systematic indoctrination when the government doesn’t allow free speech and peaceful gatherings? Is it truly a crime to stand up to criminal activities that aren’t defined as such?

It’s a moral duty to share our wisdom, especially when it can save lives. Be ‘the voice of the people, the face of their fight’ whenever the opportunity arises. May humanity use its intelligence and talents only for repairing the world.

Next in this series is ‘(Extra)ordinary’ then the Powers Legacy series with ‘Desolation’, ‘Infiltration’, and ‘Insurrection’.

As good as "Ordinary"

Davies pens a grand story in Unique, which is the sequel to "Ordinary." I recommend reading both books in order. This author brings the stories to life. The pace of the story fit the story, that was filled with struggles, battles, and oppression. There is a great chemistry between the characters, and a depth that makes them realistic and flawed. The story brings in the believable, even if almost impossible. A very well-written story, and I enjoyed it. The story revolves around the test subjects that escaped from Paragon. The quest for freedom becomes a battle for survival, for all groups involved. Unique is an enjoyable reading journey. I look forward to reading many more stories by this author. This book is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews.

Received as an audio review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest review. Narrated once again by Nathaniel Ascher, whose masterful performance truly captures the darker and harrowing path Ugene and his fellow survivors may have escaped the clutches of Paragon and have found a temporary sanctuary with the Protectorate... but that doesn't mean they are not still trapped in a web of destructive lies. For Ugene... freeing those being oppressed by the Directorate take him not only down a personal journey of discovering his place in society but confronting the cruel and abusive man determined to rule no matter the cost of innocent lives that may come because of it. Beautiful, intense, thought provoking and wonderfully memorable, Unique is a can't miss sequel to read. Highly recommended.

The power within.

And once again the author Starr Z. Davies is using his amazing imagination in this trilogy for continuation of this amazing series.

As great as Ordinary was, Unique is so so much better in the continuation of this amazing trilogy which makes you wonder how good the ending with Extra Ordinary will be ?

One thing for sure, the author Starr Z. Davies penmanship style is absolutely fantastic like no others.

Beautiful narration by Nathaniel Ascher for each of the characters in this creation.

My absolute recommendations !!!

My son and I have really been enjoying this series together! This is the second book in the series and picks up where the first left off. The characters are still fighting to secure their freedom and this book kept us gripping our seats until the end. It was easy to follow the story, even for my 11 year old, he loved it and it really got his brain thinking about alternate worlds and inspired a lot of questions.

I couldn’t stop listening to the storyline. I had to know what was happening next. I was so intrigued with more of the story and more immersed in it than the first one. I was sort of having a hard time keeping the non-main characters straight, but that didn’t matter to me. Great story, great ending. Loved it.

This series keeps getting better and better. I really enjoyed listening to the sequel of Ordinary. This book picked up off right after the events of Ordinary, which I loved.

The plot development was fantastically done. The author made it so much better and it got thicker each chapter. There were more plot twists and shocks as this book went on. I loved how the author kept world-building throughout this book and making it more complex. It really helped with the plot. The story-line did lose its path one or two chapters, but overall I enjoyed it.

The character development was well done. I would have loved to see some development in some minor characters. They did feel one dimensionally, but overall most characters did have much depth.

I am still in love with the dystopian setting of this book. It was great to see how this book kept to it and didn't lose the genre's feel.

The narrator was once again brilliant in narrating this book. I loved how the different voices stayed the same for each character. The narrator also didn't make this book feel boring.

Overall, I loved listening to this book. The narrator made sure never to make you bored in listening to this book. The author wrote an incredible that kept you wanting more.
