Second In Command is book two in the Men of Hidden Justice series by Melanie Moreland. In book one, The Boss, we met the head of Hidden Justice, Matteo, and the woman he fell in love with, Evie. With Matteo now gone, the head position goes to his second in command, Marcus.
Marcus is thirty four years old. He loved working with Matteo whom he considered his friend. He never really wanted to be in his position but that is exactly where he now is. They are currently in pursuit of a man so vile he knows he will never forget the things he has seen. They raid one location after another, saving countless women. But the leader always eludes them. Marcus has always listened to his instincts. And on this day, his instincts are telling him something is not right. Not to blow up the building. That they are missing something. And then he finds her. She is in such terrible shape, it’s a miracle she is alive. But she is.
Melissa (Missy) Evans is twenty four years old. She had pretty much given up when the tall, beautiful man saved her. She just knows somehow that he will not hurt her. As each day passes, Missy regains her strength and confidence. But at night, the terror returns. But Marcus is always there to calm her fears. As she gets stronger, she wants to help to find the man responsible but Marcus only wants to protect her, to keep her hidden. She did not escape one prison to be kept in another.
I loved Missy and Marcus together. Missy is one tough cookie. She and Marcus went toe to toe over and over and even with everything she had been through, she did not back down. Marcus watched his former boss fall in love with Evie. But he never thought it would happen to him. Then this tiny little spitfire falls into his life and has turned everything upside down. She’s suddenly become the center of his world. But can he have both worlds? Is there a future for he and Missy? At the end of this you will get a very brief sneak peak into the third book in the series. That’s all I’m saying about that topic. This is another shining success for Melanie Moreland. I might have just loved these two more than Matteo and Evie. I can’t wait for you to meet them.

"I want everything with you, sweetheart."
I loved The Boss, the first book in this series... But this one gave me even more feelings. I can't explain how I felt once I've read this book. It was both heavy and it felt like all was well with the world when I finished it. Does it make sense? Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't, but I'm addicted to this series.
"I had never belonged to anyone before."
Marcus is just like Matteo from book one, but so much more. He's more protective, more intense, hotter. He's also more passionate, loses his temper a lot more easily, and he's clearly head over heels. He didn't see Missy coming, but he wants her, more than he ever wanted anything or anyone before.
"I hadn't expected her."
I loved Missy. She's strong, fierce, and independent. Yes, she's been hurt, and yes, she needed to be saved by Marcus from a horrible situation. But she knows what she wants, and she's not about to let herself be bossed around. She's not weak or helpless.
"Stop denying me. Stop denying yourself." Her voice dropped. "Make me yours."
A bit like what happened with the couple in the first book, their attraction to each other is sudden. It comes out of nowhere. They seem a lot different, Marcus is 10 years older than Missy, and a lot more experienced. But what brings them together is more than what could ever set them apart, and that's obvious to everyone around them.
Even when they don't see eye to eye, and they fight each other, the tension and their chemistry is palpable. And their angry/make-up sex is pretty much a whole different level.
BTW, Marcus is mine and I'm not sharing!

The feelings between them turn their world upside down until nothing else matters. No one else matters. She wants to be his and he wants to be hers, fully, completely, but before that can happen, they need to catch a very bad man. While Marcus wants to keep her safe, Missy wants to be part of getting the bad guy, and getting some closure.
And let me tell you, she is not backing down!
"Stay. Marry me. Make babies with me. Boss me around. Put me in my place. Anything you want, as long as you stay with me."
This book screamed love. The kind of love that makes you want to throw caution to the wind, just to be there for your person. To protect them, to care for them, to make them happy. To give them all of yourself.
Melanie Moreland hit the nail on the head. Marcus and Missy made me believe that this kind of love is possible, and I have tears in my eyes just writing this review. Because we're all deserving of love.

If you read and loved The Boss, and wondered how Melanie Moreland would top this story. The short of it: she did. No sophomore slump for me. She took the story pacing and action and said "what would happen if I turned up the dial a notch?" What she created is another page-turner with Second-In-Command.
I am going to out myself: When Marcus appeared in The Boss, I was one of the many fangirls who asked - okay scratch that - begged that we get a Marcus story. I didn't care what it was - this man intrigued me. And did he ever break out the alpha-growly ways. He is not interested nor actively looking for his soulmate. Yet this slip of a woman basically slips in under his skin and he cannot let go.
"Matteo would howl in amusement if he saw me now."
Yup Marcus you are done for with Missy.
Let's talk Missy. Strong heroines seem to be a love or hate with romance readers. They need to be soft but not doormats according to some. Then there is this one. By what she suffered, she should be a broken doll. Missy has this underlying strength that she is going to write her own ending. She is badass without being a bitch. I basically have a big ol' girl crush on her that makes her a memorable character when fellow bookworms need a book pushed on them.
This is romantic suspense with page-turning scenes, steams up your glasses from your kindle caught on fire with the chemistry and two unforgettable main characters. I love this side of romantic suspense that Melanie Moreland is bringing to readers.
Definitely a - BUY THIS recommendation from me.

His Plan A was working but there was this feeling inside that they were missing something. Something important, something that he needed to find and that right there folks is the hook, the line and the sinker in Melanie Moreland’s new romantic suspense Second-In-Command.
His “gut feeling” has him finding Melissa Evans where no one would have thought to look. A victim, an innocent and a woman who throws Marcus right off his game! Oh yes, this is one heck of a ride we have embarked on, are you ready for the dark haired man who rescues the auburn haired heroine to find out his plans might be going out the window when it comes to this woman.

Marcus’ life is forever changed when his instincts kick in and help him save a young, entrapped woman. Missy is in rough shape, beaten, starved, broken, caged. Once Marcus sets his eyes on her he is lost. Every protective bone in his body is on alert and he takes her in. Caring for her, helping her heal becomes his number one priority. When the smoke clears, things become clearer and who Missy is, the danger she faced and continues to face, brings them even closer together.
Watching them love on each other made this a read in one sitting romance and seeing them face the danger they are in together, made this an unputdownable, suspense filled romance. I lost myself in their story and was on edge until the very end. Their happily ever after was sweet and perfect for them.

I’m trying to find the words to describe how much I loved this book but no words will do it justice. I devoured this book so fast I didn’t even have time to post a currently reading pic. This book had been an anticipated read for me since I first heard about it so imagine my excitement the minute it landed on my device; I jumped right in and fell hard for Marcus and his love interest Missy. Their journey is so unique; nothing like I’ve ever read before. Melanie Moreland did a phenomenal job keeping the aura and mood of this story similar to The Boss and penning a character just as dominating, cavemanish and alpha as Matteo yet different. Marcus has every quality I love about Matteo and then some. The author makes it impossible to not fall for her characters. Second-In-Command is another brilliant book by Melanie Moreland that shows me why she is no doubt one of my top 1-click authors. I was totally consumed by Marcus and Missy. Take all my stars and then some!
AUDIOBOOK REVIEW:
I am a big fan of John Lane and his narrating. He has a way of taking the character and bringing them to life. Marcus is a larger than life character; John performed him in such a way that had me mesmerized. His deep, rich baritone sent shivers down my spine. It was pure perfection. And Maxine Mitchell… she was just wow. I could feel Missy’s emotions through Maxine’s dulcet voice which is pleasing to the ear. Marcus and Missy’s story is captivating right from the opening pages. Everything about the plot and character development is extraordinary. This series is a must listen to. I highly recommend it!

Venturing a little deeper into the realm of dark romance, Melanie Moreland brings heightened intensity to both her story and characters as she delves deeper into the world of the Men of Hidden Justice with her second book in the series, “Second in Command.” Marcus and Missy’s story has a darker overall feeling than her first book in the series, “The Boss,” employing striking visuals and the characters’ inner dialogue to render a full picture of the horrors both Marcus and Missy are privy to. Marcus is the perfect growly alpha, and he has definitely met his match in Missy; she is no passive victim, and has a beautiful stubborn streak. Moreland creates engaging and complex characters who feed off each other and grow throughout the book, developing into their perfect selves as individuals and as a couple. I love how this novel focuses on creating the story around the characters’ experiences and relationship. Moreland intertwines both subplots seamlessly, creating an emotional connection for the characters, while guiding the readers through the maze of a very sinister underworld, culminating in the ultimate standoff with a villain who’s end you’ll cheer for. Although Second in Command is part of the Men of Hidden Justice series, it can be read as a standalone. But “The Boss” is definitely worth the read, and from all current signs, “The Commander” will be as must read book as well.

I am absolutely loving Melanie Moreland's foray into the dark side. The Men of Hidden Justice are captivating and I love what they stand for. Book 2 in the series takes things to another level.
Marcus finds Missy in the most awful circumstances but although you may expect her to be a broken character she has amazing inner strength, resilience and stubbornness that make her his perfect match. Marcus wants to protect (and feed) her but she has other ideas. I love the partnership between these two, and that Marcus, like Matteo before him finds exactly what he doesn't even know he is looking for.
I'm excited by the glimpse of what is to come too!

5 Star Review Second In Command (Men of Hidden Justice #2) by Melanie Moreland
I’m not a huge fan of Mafia romance stories but as it was written by Melanie Moreland, an author whose writing I admire, I decided to take a chance on the first book in the series, The Boss and absolutely devoured it, I loved it. SO much so that I could not wait to read Marcus and Melissa (Missy) ‘s story.
Second In Command was suspenseful, romantic, riveting and I was hooked from the first to the last chapter. It was extremely well written with characters who you quickly fall for and who will leave an impression on you.
Their journey was rocky and explosive at times I feared they would not get through the darkness to the light. The chemistry and heat that sizzles between Marcus and Missy was intense. My heart broke for Missy and everything that she has endured. Marcus was such a protective man who proves Missy can depend on him to be her strength as she recovers. For me this book was darker than the first one but just as good and I was totally consumed by the story.
I loved this book, perhaps even more than Matteo and Evie’s story and was on the edge of my seat whilst reading this book and anxiously await the next release in the series.
You, Ms. Moreland have changed my mind on darker romances.
I’m not a huge fan of Mafia romance stories but as it was written by Melanie Moreland, an author whose writing I admire, I decided to take a chance on the first book in the series, The Boss and absolutely devoured it, I loved it. SO much so that I could not wait to read Marcus and Melissa (Missy) ‘s story.
Second In Command was suspenseful, romantic, riveting and I was hooked from the first to the last chapter. It was extremely well written with characters who you quickly fall for and who will leave an impression on you.
Their journey was rocky and explosive at times I feared they would not get through the darkness to the light. The chemistry and heat that sizzles between Marcus and Missy was intense. My heart broke for Missy and everything that she has endured. Marcus was such a protective man who proves Missy can depend on him to be her strength as she recovers. For me this book was darker than the first one but just as good and I was totally consumed by the story.
I loved this book, perhaps even more than Matteo and Evie’s story and was on the edge of my seat whilst reading this book and anxiously await the next release in the series.
You, Ms. Moreland have changed my mind on darker romances.

This book delivered all I was expecting and MORE! I've been waiting for the 2nd book in the Men of Hidden Justice series and I can't believe I'm saying this but I think I love this book better than the Boss!
Marcus is the perfect growly AF dominant male who has never been in love. But when he rescues Missy, it is a feeling like nothing he has ever experienced when he cradles her in his arms. Missy has never felt as safe and secure until Marcus held her.
All is not roses and lollipops for our lovers, however. They have to figure out why Missy was kidnapped and by who or she will never be free. She will forever live in fear and be looking over her shoulder!
I love this variant of Melanie's writing and she does a wonderful job with the Mafia vibe! I can't wait for Julian's story next!

I devoured this book in 4 hours, just couldn't put it down. Marcus & Melissa are so compelling and enjoyable. Their burgeoning relationship feels normal as they learn how to be together as a couple in their less than normal world. Marcus is domineering in his needs to protect Melissa. Melissa is no walk over though, she is a tough woman with skills of her own and no intention of sitting back and doing what she is told.
I love the twists and turns in this story, especially the climax.

Loving this new series and was eagerly awaiting this book I wasn't disappointed!
A great storyline leading to their happy ending and had you not able to stop reading.
Marcus the strong, sexy alpha male and Missy vulnerable yet strong and determined make it a great read.

Leave it to Ms. Moreland to give us something unique and outstanding! She has certainly done that with the Men of Hidden Justice Series. I was anticipating this second book but I wanted to take my time and savor it -- well, that didn't happen! Once I dove into it, there was no going back and no stopping. This book moves and never stops. I loved Matteo's character in The Boss but I can honestly say Marcus has replaced him not only in the organization but in my mind and heart as well. He was everything I had anticipated and more. Of course, I always want to be friends with Ms. Moreland's female characters because they're funny, kind, brave and everything I want to be! Missy is no different and she's the perfect counterbalance to Marcus's protective, alpha character. This is a bit different than Ms. Moreland's contemporary romance but she nails it perfectly -- just shows that she can write anything and do it well! Another 5+ star winning read.

Oh My Goodness!!! I thought Matteo and Evie’s story was the epitome of suspense and romance. Now enter Marcus and Missy. I never really knew what would happen from one page to the next. The heat is off the charts and the characters blend so beautifully together.
Melanie has done it again (I know I say that every time, but she just keeps surpassing herself) with a series that makes you ache for more. I can’t wait for The Commander. The sneak peek has me on edge and itching for more.

Just wow! The Men of Hidden Justice are such a wonderful, powerful and obviously sexy as sin men. This book, Second-In-Command is amazing, same or more than the first one. Marcus has a lonely life that is totally changed with his encounter with Missy. Both fall in love with each other and their romance leads to making decisions in their lives in order to protect each other. I love how Melanie writes this style of novels a little darker but just as romantic and fascinating. 5 stars are mandatory for this book.

Tortured souls, wounded hearts and a danger that just won't quit. Second in Command is like an open wound that refuses to heal. Marcus and Missy are love as it's most haunting. An intriguing blend of broken hearts, thrilling hunger and unfathomable twists. Moreland wants to make sure our hearts feel the burn of love at it's most heartrending. I just can't get enough of the complex men and women of the Men of Hidden Justice series.

Although this may be the second book in the series - I think it was even better than the first. From the very instant Marcus took hold of Missy the connection was made and the two were placed on a roller coaster of a journey. Filled with the perfect combination of love and mayhem this has quickly become one of my favorite couples. Melanie Moreland is known for her sweet romance but seriously she has gone far beyond her norm but has established herself as an epic storyteller of thrilling drama. 5 stars are not enough!! And I cannot wait for Julian's story.

I am enjoying this suspenseful side of Melanie Moreland and this series is getting better and better.
This is the second book of the series is about Marcus and Melissa (Missy), they meet in an unfortunate circumstances and quickly develop a strong connection.
This is pure romance with a touch of thriller and just like the previous book is a delightful read with a lot of good scenes and stories.

Melanie Moreland you managed to capture my attention and heart with Second in Command. I stayed up reading because One more chapter wasn't going to cut it. Marcus and Missy are amazing characters.
I thought the storyline and the way they managed to get their HEA was just fabulous. I need February to hurry to
for read the 3rd book In The Men of Hidden Justice this is a fabulous series.

Marcus is now in charge of the unit and thanks to his gut he finds the wonderful Missy. Since the beginning you can feel their chemistry and it was very fun to read their “fights”

We saw our boy Marcus in the last book and now it's his turn! Picking up and finding these woman from trafficking and making sure they don't find the spot or files. At the last job he finds Melissa who was locked in the wall inside a cage beaten and started. She's his now to take care of since he has a feeling someone wanted her since she was locked away. Their relationship was slow at first since she was getting her strength back.. but we learn more about Melissa and how she was a undercover cop and why this man wanted her. Between that mystery we get Marcus and Mel falling in love it was tension and steamy.. few times Marcus lost his mind and I love it who doesn't love a alpha man!!! It was so good I couldn't get enough I do wish Matteo showed up or like had a phone call to give more advice to Marcus.

Don't let the "middle child" of books fool you she might of topped the first!
Another great story with lots of twists and turns, not a typical Melanie book but a nice change of pace from what she has written to a new series and a new suspense romance.
I'm so glad she gave Marcus a book and I have to say Missy is one my new favorite heroines she has written, strong but silent will stand up to you when she needs too and doesn't back down! HEA of course, I really don't want to speak about the book or give a general summary, just read it you wont be sorry!

Like The Boss, Second in Command is more like sweet, short and vanilla. The story is short. So it is more novella. Not much drama. Like Miss Moreland's signature books, the writing is oozing with sweetness.
The characters are typical brooding protective hero and the heroine is typical damsel in distress. They just fell in love so quickly without any real connection. Anyway, I do not know what to write more for this book. Because it is so short.
I enjoy it OK.

Marcus is a combination of hard-assed alpha male and loving, tender partner. Missy is a combination of sassy, defiant, vulnerable heroine.. The book itself is the perfect combination of romance and mystery, of detailed intimate scenes and fade to black. Melanie is such a good author. 5 stars, as usual
